Subject: USS Capricorn: Part 2

<Time: At Chili-palooza>

Avi had spent the two hours before his little soirée preparing the
ingredients for his chili. Rarely was he ever able to find good
cayenne
powder, but the Vulcan kind was close enough. Usually, he could
substitute
some habenero powder instead, but he wasn't quite sure he wanted to
this
time. It was his first time making it, since he'd come on board the
ship.
He was almost nervous. What if people didn't like it? What if they
thought
it was terrible?

Nah, they were going to love it. He always made great chili! At
least, his
grandmother used to tell him that...

"Welcome Miaren." Avi said, shaking her hand, as she approached.

„Tis good to see you as well Captain.‰ She replied.

"Avi, call me Avi," he replied. "This is a social gathering. Relax
Doctor.
You are too tense!‰ He turned and surprised her with a hot steaming
bowl of
chili. She took it and smiled back at him.

Although, as he watched her try some, he felt a little bit of the
color
drain from his face. He was CONVINCED she was going to hate it.
"Why, this
actually smells pretty good!‰ she exclaimed. She blushed deeply when
the
words she spoke hit her ear.

Avi laughed. Her smile was infectious. It was hysterical. She just
couldn't catch a break. If someone were to tape the discussion, he'd
just
laugh and laugh, because there was literally nothing she could say
that
wouldn't get her in trouble, somehow. As the laughter died down, he
noticed
a bottle in her hand.

Miaren juggled the bowl of steaming hot chili with the spicy aroma
filling
the air and managed to get the bottle loose so she could hand it to
him.

„I brought ya a gift, as is proper.‰ Miaren began. She smiled as she
exhaled her breath and handed him the bottle of his beloved ketchup.

He looked between her and the ketchup shocked. He truly had no idea
what to
say. Nice? Yes. Surprising? Definitely. With chili? DEFINITELY
NOT!

„Was I in error to gift ya with something?‰ She asked in all
sincerity.
Perhaps there were different social manners for events such as these.

Avi stood holding the bottle of ketchup and looked around at the faces
watching him. Harry? He DEFINITELY was playing a piece in this.
He'd been
playing tricks on him since Academy. In fact, he could remember one
time
that he spiked Avi's sangria mix when Maria was coming over, just to
see if
she, someone with notoriously bad tolerance for liquor, would pass out
mid-way through dinner. Well, not only did she pass out, but she
knocked
her food on her face in the process of falling off her chair. Two
stitches
and a new uniform later, she blamed Avi, and shortly thereafter
started
dating Harry.

Wiping the corners of his mouth with a napkin, he started to speak.
"No, I
am most honored." He began. "Such a thoughtful gift." He finished his
statement, trying not to laugh too hard. He REALLY didn't know what
to say
at that point. Nice as she was, this was too over the top. She'd
never
have any idea that he liked ketchup, and CERTAINLY not with chili.

„Well, I‚m glad.‰ She replied and moved to step away. Avi reached out
and
placed his hand on her shoulder, partly to keep her from slipping
away.

"How did you know that I liked ketchup?" he asked nicely. He did not
mind
ketchup, but somehow she had been told or led to believe he liked it a
lot.
Clearly, he was going to have to get this out of her. She was bright,
and
must know that she's now being used as a pawn, and where there were
pawns,
Kings and Queens weren't far behind.

„Well, it was mentioned to me that you∑well∑you have quite
a fondness for
it.‰ She finished. She was not going to say a word about how poor his
cooking skills were.

„Ahh,‰ he replied with a soft chuckle. „I do remember not mentioning
needing to bring anything to this chili palooza.‰ He replied softly.
He
kept his voice low and cajoling so as not to startle her and have her
clam
up.

„No, that be true, you did not mention it once, but tis the proper
way, and
Maria did mention that everyone brings you some to cover the
hor∑‰ she
stopped and blanched when she almost let the secret out.

„The horrible what?‰ he asked seriously, altho he tried hard to hide
the
smile and laughter in his voice. He had to admit this was a good one.
He
knew a few things he would have to work into place to pay them back of
course. But then that was half of the fun.

„OH Sir!‰ she exclaimed in distress. „I am sure it is not as bad as
they
made out, well, this recipe at least. It smells rather good, and
definitely
like chili!‰ she gushed in her attempt to smooth over and sooth his
possible
hurt feelings.

„And no hard feelings Sir, but if ya wish to douse your chili in
ketchup,
then who am I to say anything? Everyone to his own I say.‰ She added
in a
stronger tone.

Avi threw his head back and howled in laughter. This was by far the
funniest thing they'd done yet! All the strange little things that
had
happened through out the day and his CMO showing up with a bottle of
ketchup
made sense. The audacity of it all just struck his funny bone. Now,
it was
just a question of who else was involved. Harry? Definitely. Maria?
Probably. Montana? That was a tough one. He looked around at her,
while
Miaren looked shocked. Quickly, realizing that she'd been duped,
however,
she blushed. Avi knew now there was no question she just wanted to
make for
the exit. She was going to be a fun naif to have around.

Avi turned to his special pot of chili and dished up the huge scooping
and
turned back to Miaren. „Shall we partake?‰ he said with a wink.
„Damn I
have waited all day for this!‰ He took a large mouthful, knowing that
he'd
kept the remainder of the habanero out of it, there was no way it
would be
too hot for him. Feeling the flavors come over him, he quickly went
from
humor to horror. GODDAMN THIS IS HOT!!!

"BE ya alright Captain?‰ she asked as she wondered if it really did
taste
that bad or perhaps he was choking on his large mouthful. She watched
as he
managed to swallow and his eyes watered and the funny sound that he
managed
to make was a pathetic whine.

„Perhaps some of that ketchup WILL help this.‰ He retorted and reached
for
the bottle of ketchup.‰

„WHO eats Chili with Ketchup?‰ the voice of Harry could be heard
coming
closer. Avi looked up and saw Harry approaching innocently as a lamb
holding another bottle of. . . something. As Harry stood next to his
friend
he place down on the table a jar of hot peppers in some strange
looking
sauce.

„Drake got me these, said they were the hottest peppers 4 galaxies
around.‰
Harry offered. „I‚m sure they would taste so much better than plain
old
ketchup.‰

Avi laughed and patted the back of his old friend. He was not
surprised
that somehow Harry had managed to add a few of those peppers in his
chili.
The two old friends laughed and slapped each other on their backs.
Those
were by far the hottest peppers he'd ever tasted in his life! Yet
another
drake special. ‘Note to self: must get drake back when he gets back.'

"So, where were you and Maria hiding while I was talking to Miaren?"

"Hiding?" Maria asked walking up beside him. "What makes you think
we were
hiding?"

"Well?" He asked, completely ignoring her question.

"Sadly, our unwitting accomplice here," and he pointed to the doctor,
"kept
you busy just long enough for us to drop them in. Clearly they work
quickly."

"OOOOOOOH YES!" Avi said, and as Montana walked up, he only just then
felt
the heat start to drain from his face. Guess he wouldn't be enjoying
his
chili tonight. Hell...he could barely feel his tongue at this point.

"So, did he like the peppers?" she said, sticking a spoonful of his
chili
in her face. "These are fantastic, Harry!"

"Thanks, chief!" He said, almost instinctively. "I thought they
added a
nice touch. Its a good thing you know how to season this dish!" he
said
pointing around to the other crewmen who were enjoying some of the
chili
just then, as the line grew to the water jug and the replicators.

Avi looked around, and as his face nearly exploded in embarrassment,
he just
opened up into laughter. Raucous laughter. He left his friends for
the
time being, and put his hand on the shoulders of the some of the
"recovered"
crewmembers who just got water to satiate their pain. He felt bad
that they
didn't enjoy it...well, come to think of it, nor did he, for that
matter.
Although, quite a few people were going back for seconds, so that was
something, right?

"Excuse me!" He spoke up a bit looking to get people's attention. He
gestured that the people who were "dying" in the corner by the
replicator
continue trying to save their tired tongues. "For those of you with 4
alarm
fires going on, I apologize on behalf of the perpetrators, but on my
own
behalf, I'm glad those of you who made it were able to. And, I hope
that
you enjoy the rest of the evening. Many thanks to those officers that
brought some of their own specialties. Obviously, I'd be negligent if
I
didn't mention that shift change is in 4 hours, and enjoy the rest of
the
night, everyone!"

Avi shook a few hands before walking back over to the Fountaines and
his
lovely girlfriend. "I thought you did a good job, 9.8, at least, but
the
Klingon judge only gave you a 9.5. Better luck next time, sport."
Harry
said. Avi just chuckled as he took another spoonful, just so other
people
would see him, and not think it was totally terrible. Quickly sucking
down
a glass of milk provided by the doctor, he felt some relief wash over
him.

Link arrived as soon as he could. The name brought up feelings that he

Subject: [USS CAPRICORN] - Pass or Fail - An Exam in 3 parts

MD 1 1100
Medical Center

[SNIP from Joshs Post The Big Chili]

And over here is the new surgery area. Miaren brought him to the
newest
area in the Medical Center. We reconfigured some of the empty,
neighboring
bio-med tables so we could have more room. She said as they walked
past the
bio-med tables. This is where Im experimenting Avis eyes opened wide
as day when she started that sentence. with my research techniques.
I
never thought Id have the chance, but I like that there are a few
patients
with some similar circumstances to what I was working on.

[END Snip]

Avi stood for a moment taking in what she had said. When Miaren
stopped for
a moment and looked at his face the confusion was still apparent. She
smiled and tried her thoughts again. She knew she probably spoke too
fast
and rushed all the information out, forgetting that this was all-new
to him,
and she had lived it for that past 5 years.

Part of the reason I was chosen, to come here, was to test our
research.
We have been working hard these past 5 years to perfect the cell
regeneration that would aid the burn victims. As you know the healing
process can be long and very painful, and even with all our advanced
technology many walk away with serious scars. She paused so she could
make
sure he was on the same page. He nodded for her to continue.

Well, AndrOne of the head bio physicists on our team, he was a genius
with
genetics, he figured out a way to split the gene in just the right
degree
and angle, kinda like one would split and create a diamond Miaren
paused
and saw the look of interest on his face and continued. Well, with
this
new technique we can improve the quality of healing tissue that the
body
generates. We can speed up and lessen the painful re-growth that
occurs
with the new skin having to adapt to its new shape. Even with our
advanced
technology and knowledge there is still a lot of time and pain
involved.

Avi nodded listening with interest and although he was fascinated and
had
many questions, and would love to sit and debate with her all the
possibilities and ramble down each path, he knew she needed to get
back to
her patients, and he did have a ship to run. Well, and Chili to make.

And that is why you were so upset when I informed you there were no
patients aboard. He volunteered remembering the shock and almost hurt
look
on her face.

Aye. She answered sadly. It is a strange dichotomy that I walk. She
tried to explain. As a researcher I long to have specimens and
subjects in
which to work with and work out the problems that are set before me.
So
that in the long run, many will be helped and perhaps saved from what
I have
struggled to bring forth. On the other hand, being a healer, well, my
heart
goes out to those who suffer. I understand both sides of the issue.
The
fact that there were patients with severe injuries and burns, patients
who
could have been helped, aided and perhaps even cured with our new
research
made the decision to take this assignment easy.

And now? he asked interested in her answer. Not that she could change
anything about her situation for the time being. But, still, he was
interested.

Well, she shrugged. Now I have many patients, and the time to work on
my
research. Sadly I am sure that I will get my chance to use my
techniques on
someone. She looked up into his face and saw he was studying her. She
smiled.

And, we are going to a new place, a place I have never been before,
think
of ALL we can learn from this place? Maybe something new to help us
as a
race or species even more!

Avi smiled at her answer. It was a good one. She would do fine here.
It
might take her some time to settle in, but she was adventurous enough
to
enjoy the journey.

Well, Lt. I thank you for the tour, and hope to spend more time at a
later
date, discussing your research and other fun medical facts. He
nodded to
her and exited the room.

Miaren stayed behind to take a quick breath and pull herself back to
what
was at the top of her list and agenda. The crews medical issues and
to get
everyone compliant to StarFleet Regulations.

{SNIP from Robs Post-Meeting Miaren in Medical]

MD 1
1300
Medical Center

Lieutenant Commander AKora Reporting for medical checkup as ordered by
the
Ships Captain. She gave Miaren a salute.

My medical records. AKora held out a data crystal after the Doctor had
returned her greeting. My recent arrival may have prevented your
systems
from containing the latest updates of my records.

[END SNIP]

Miaren smiled at the dark beauty before her and nodded taking the
crystal
and taking the information from the crystal she scanned through them
on her
PADD.

Very Impressive Lt. Commander. Miaren spoke up. I see that everything
is
indeed in order. I am sorry that you have been inconvenienced by
this.
Miaren said softly. She finished scanning through the information in
the
file and noted several interesting points. She looked back to the Lt.
Commander standing erect before her. She studied her for a moment and
smiled again.

I will download this file into the main computer and note on it that
you
have complied with the order and all your files are current. Miaren
glanced at her again, and mused at how serious her countenance was.

I thank thee for taking care of this so quickly, and taking time from
your
busy schedule.

Miaren stood there for an awkward moment. How did one dismiss a senior
officer? She did not need to keep her from her duties any further,
and she
looked SO StarFleet. Miaren knew enough of plain manners not to just
turn
and walk away. She blushed softly and decided to take a risk.

Im a wee bit embarrassed to say this Lt. Commander, but being new to
this,
how does one go aboutuh ending this conference? she asked.

AKora nodded drew herself sharply at attention and saluted Miaren.

Miaren responded and held her salute while AKora snapped around and
left.

MD 1
1700
Lounge

Miaren waited for the perfect time and slipped from the notice of the
Captain. She made it out the door of the lounge and then stopped
herself.
She made her way to the kitchen area and returned to the lounge. She
could
hear his boisterous laugh and many others as they laughed and joked.
She
for one was not too sure what was so funny, but she was here to watch
over
the health and well being of the crew. And THAT included the Captain
and
his strange habits. She slipped the glass of milk next to his chili
and
hoped it would help with the burning.

As she made her way down the hallway, and could still hear the
laughter of
the officers she plotted her next move. If the chili was THAT hot,
and
people sampled it and partook of it, then they were going to need
treatment
for their entire GI system.

She chuckled to herself at the silly bravo of men in general, who had
to
best each other in contests of bravery and daring. Eating hot chili
peppers
seemed to be a popular one.

Miaren rounded the corner and walked into the very quiet SickBay. She
looked around and did not see nor hear anyone. As she went to the
main
information center she saw Tre-Hani sitting quietly, humming to
herself and
reading the monitor scene.

Evenin Tre-Hani! Miaren exclaimed with a happy smile. She was greeted
with a smile in return. Im glad you are here. Miaren began.

Im sure we will have visitors soon. The Captain just unleashed what
they
call 9-alarm chili. Tre-Hani smiled and giggled and nodded.

Care to help me set up? Miaren asked again, feeling relaxed and not as
stressed as she had been earlier.

[TAG Carina- Will Tre-Hani help Miaren get ready for those who cant
stomach
the killer chili?]

[SUMMARY]

MD 1

1100 Miaren completes her tour of the medical center with Captain Avi
and
speaks a bit on her research.

1300 - Miaren is greeted by Lt.Commander AKora and handed her medical
files. She notes that all is in order and apologizes to her for
dragging
her away from her duties. Not sure how to end the interview she asks
and
AKora salutes and leaves.

1700 Miaren slips from the chili palooza and makes her way back down
to
sickbay to ready it for those who can not handle the 9 alarm chili.

Day 6
Morning

In the morning, one of the first things that Trissana did upon
awakening
was to fly down to the lower green and check on her little palm tree.
She had watched her rider plant it early on the previous morning, but
then he had told her that it was her responsibility to take care of
it.
She hoped it grew quickly to full size so that it wouldn't need
'tending,' as her rider put it. She figured that dragons didn't need
as
much tending when they got big - well, other than an occasional oiling
-
and she hoped that palm trees were like that too.

However, when she inspected the little tree, she began to get
concerned.
The leaves, which had been a deep and lush green the day before, now
looked a bit brown. Worse, they looked a little wilted at the edges.
Quickly she called her rider and explained the problem to him.

*Well, did you water it?* Trevor asked.

[Well, no...] she replied.

*I told you to do that or it wouldn't make it,* he reminded her.

[How do I do that?] she asked. [Couldn't you just...]

*No, Triss, it was your idea to bring it and now you have some
responsibility too! I'm not going to do everything for you. The
water
jug is over on the green, you just need to fill it water the tree with
it.*

Triss sighed. She walked over and tried using a fore claw to pick up
the jug, but her claws were too big to fit through the handles.

[Bohoc,] she called, [Are you there? I have a problem.]

Bohoc heard Trissana's call and immediately left Andahar practicing
his
swords on the upper green to find her, <Yes, Triss! Where are you?>

[Down here on the green,] Trissana said worriedly. She waited a
moment
for the small, hunter-green dragon to land. [Look at my palm tree!]
she
said.

Bohoc had circled, not seeing her on the upper green, but then
realized
she was on the lower green. He saw the beautiful pearlescent dragon
sitting near the big stick, which he realized belatedly when he
skidded
to a stop, barely avoiding flattening it, was her palm tree. <Your
palm
tree?> Bohoc looked at the plant quizzically.

[Yes, my souvenir from Jasra Warren!] she told him urgently. [When it
gets big, you and I will be able to snuggle underneath its shade -
remember how nice those palm trees were at Jasra Warren for keeping
cool
under? But if we don't figure how to get water to it, it won't get
big...!]

<We?> Bohoc cocked his head and examined the little plant. <I'm not
sure what type of water it would need. Didn't those palm trees grow
near to that Sea? Do you remember how terrible that water tasted?
We've nothing like that around here!>

Trissana nodded. [No, we don't,] she agreed. [Wait a minute,
though...
don't they have some of that 'salt' stuff in the stores? What if we
got
some regular water, put some of the salt in it, and then poured it on
the tree?]

Bohoc nodded, <Oh, but last time we took something from the stores
Moondancer's rider was not very happy.>

Triss cocked her head. [Well, you spend a lot of time with
Moondancer,]
she said. [If you call her and ask her to help us, she can get the
salt
for us.]

Bohoc could sense that Triss wasn't too happy about that first part,
and
he swallowed, feeling guilty for spending so much time with Moondancer
and not with Trissana. <Sure, I suppose it couldn't hurt to ask.> He
searched for her familiar presence and inquired if she weren't too
busy.
Upon hearing that she was only napping in the sun, Bohoc asked, <I
would
like to *requisition* some sea-salt from the stores. Do you think you
might be able to get some for us... me?>

{What do you need the sea-salt for?} Moondancer inquired.

<For a tree that... Trevor... brought back from Jasra. It needs to be
*watered* and we don't have that type of water here in Cleft.>

{I'll see what I can do,} Moondancer answered him.

Now they only had to wait. A few minutes later and Moondancer joined
Bohoc and Trissana on the upper green. She had a small bag of the
sea-salt hooked to her claw.

[Now what?] Triss wondered. [I suppose we will have to get some
water.
Um, Bohoc, I don't suppose you could...]

<Could... what?> the green dragon asked. <Get water? Where am I
going
to get water from?>

[Well, there's the river right over there,] Triss suggested. [Look,
just like this...] She picked up the stoneware urn gently in her
teeth,
and then proceeded to walk over to the river's edge. She dipped her
head in, and a moment later withdrew it with an urn full of water.
[That's how you do it!] she told them.

Bohoc glanced at Moondancer and then back at Triss, <I see. So, now
that you have the water... how much of the sea-salt should we add?>

Trissana shrugged her shoulders with a rustling of wings. [I don't
know, actually.] She looked over at Moondancer and then back to
Bohoc.
[All of it, maybe? There was a lot of salt in that water there!

Moondancer put down the bag and looked at the rope that served to tie
the sack closed. {Do you have an idea on how to get it opened?}

Bohoc tugged at the rope with his claw and replied, <Get a human with
a
knife? Or... my human has his swords with him, maybe he could cut it
open?>

[Hm, or maybe you could sort of *borrow* one of your rider's swords?]
Triss suggested.

Bohoc wasn't sure why she thought borrowing was better, but he told
her
he would, and took off to find Andahar. He had finished practicing
and
was puzzling over a bundle of what appeared to be clothes. His swords
were placed up against a stone. Bohoc slipped up and gingerly took
the
larger one in his teeth, and then flew off.

Andahar turned to see his dragon flying away again and sent to him,
<*I
am almost done here... just need to cool off.*>

<I'll be with Triss and Moondancer. Let me know when you are ready
for
me,> Bohoc sent back, careful not to think too hard about the sword.
He hoped he'd be back before Andahar noticed it was missing.

As soon as Bohoc landed, he gingerly transferred the sword over to
Triss. Positioning it so that the hilt was held securely in her
teeth,
she tried to spear the bag with the sword. She missed, and only
managed
to dig the tip of the sword into the ground. Her second attempt only
managed a glancing slice at the bag, but didn't cut it open. [This is
harder than it looks,] she remarked. [Your rider makes it look so
easy!]

Moondancer and Bohoc watched as Triss tried a third time, and third
time
must have been the charm, because she Trissana managed to catch the
bag
just right and split it wide open, spilling the sparkly salt onto the
ground.

<Uh oh. Now, how are you going to get it into the water?> Bohoc
asked
as he saw the bag spill its contents.

[Well, maybe like this,] Triss ventured, sticking the tip of her
tongue
onto the small pile of salt. Making a face, she dipped her
salt-encrusted tongue into the top of the water urn. [Yuck, it
doesn't
taste any better here than it did at the sea!] She stepped back and
motioned for one of the others to take a turn.

Bohoc gamely took his turn, and shuddered as he tasted the salt.
Moondancer shook her head and declined.

{Perhaps that is enough salt for the strange, little tree?} Moondancer
ventured.

The tiny queen came bounding up to examine what the three bigger
dragons
were doing. She remembered Bohoc and Trissana from Jasra.

(Hello!) Ale'bela called as she skidded to a stop in front of the pile
of salt, (What is that? Can I have some?) She stuck her tongue into
the pile as she'd seen the large pearlescent and smaller green dragons
do. (Ewww. That's salt! What are you doing tasting salt?)

[We are trying to water the little tree,] Trissana told her patiently.
[But, like all the trees from that warren where you came from, we need
to give it salt in its water because that is what it must be
accustomed
to drinking. As long as you have your tongue in the salt, perhaps you
can help out...just put your tongue in the top of the urn.]

(Put it in the urn?) Ale'bela sniffed at the urn and scenting only
water, so as instructed, she stuck her tongue into the urn as far as
she
could. (But the trees don't need salt water. They like fresh water.
Uh oh...)

<What's wrong?> Bohoc asked as he sensed some distress from the
little
queen.

(I'm stuck.) Ale'bela cried, (My tongue is stuck!)

Summary:
Day 6
Morning
Trissana observes that her palm tree is looking a bit wilted. Trevor
reminds her that it may need watering. Triss asks Bohoc for help. He
observes that it might need salt water like the sea water in Jasra.
They ask Moondancer to bring them a sack of sea-salt. Needing to cut
it
open, Bohoc borrows Andahar's sword, (Andahar is unaware as he is
distracted by a pile of clothing). Finally getting the sack open they
use their tongues to transfer the salt to the urn of water. The
little
queen Ale'bela appears to find out what they are doing, and after
informing Triss that the tree doesn't need salt water, gets her tongue
stuck in the urn.

Subject: [DL-N]Who's Tears are these Anyway

[Day 4]
[Med Center]

Jale dropped his chin to his chest a moment not wishing to have Freya
see him this way. But a warm finger soft finger lifted his face back
up
to look into his friends eyes. He found them welcoming and concerned
something he couldn't ever remember seeing before. "It is more then
that
Freya, sure people will likely forget it about it at the next drama
that
hits Norwall which by my calculations is about every few moments. But
damn it I'm not likely to forget. I don't know what it is about this
place, but the loss of children is far more frequent then it ought to
be. Perhaps the dragons were right that when I arrived and the sky was
lit up in so many colors only meant ill omen. I just don't know any
more."

Freya nodded as though knowing Jale needed to talk. For a moment
though
Jale stopped not sure he wanted to burden his friend with his baggage
of
problems. Yet, somehow he knew that she wasn't likely to walk away
unless he got it all out.

"Life is such a precious thing, old man Cross use to say to me. He
would
demonstrate by showing me how the body worked and how it went about
protecting itself. He found such delight in my ability to learn from
him. But he also showed me the bad side of life, how disease could eat
the body up, or how a wound from battle could fester, even though
you've
done your best to bandage the person up." Jale watched Freya a moment
wondering if he was telling her to much or not making any sense but
she
smiled and waited him out.

"When he felt I understood these things he began to teach me other
things, like what a healer needs in order to battle off disease and
festering. He talked as though herbs where my arrows and salves my
shield. Believe it or not he also was the one that taught me to sew.
But
even though I understood all these things, along with the fact that we
were outfitted to fight the worst, death would come, and remind us how
little we really knew." Jale fidgeted a moment as thoughts of when he
was the problem, more then the solution. But he pushed that aside for
now wasn't the time to dwell on such things. Then he remembered what
troubled him most.

"But what Cross never prepared me for were the eyes of the people."
The
healer said in almost a whisper.

"The eyes, Jale what do you mean?" Freya asked looking bewildered.

"It's the eyes that tell you the unspoken; from the eyes you see their
hope or disappointment. You see the anger or fear, people can make
their
bodies lie and can convince themselves everything is ok like Jeneve is
doing now, but the eyes will always tell you the truth." Jale trembled
as he uttered these last words. "The eyes of a child are even more
telling and ever more unforgiving." A stream of tears flowed freely
from his eyes as he shook with the anguish.

"Please Jale, don't be so hard on yourself I was there with you
remember. There wasn't anything you could have done differently." She
griped his strong callused hands.

"No, but I can cry for a child that will never again cry whose eyes
will
always be there in the back of my head asking why me, why couldn't you
save me." The words seemed to echo across the room as heads turned
their
way and as quickly looked away.

The words seemed to have upset Freya and Jale gripped her hands.
"Cross
told me one more thing. I never really understood it until now. 'Lad,'
he said. Life and death are not mortal enemies; they are the closest
of
friends and teachers to us mortal men. Remember that lad for when
death
comes the lessons you learned from life will carry with you unto your
death. A healer is but the teacher's aid.'"

Jale hadn't realized everyone in the med center had gone quiet
listening
to his words. "Well enough of that," Jale picked up a wash clothe and
wiped his eyes and took the offered drink from Freya. "Thank you so
much
for lending me your ear a truer friend I don't think I could ever
find."
The healer said in a whisper for only her to hear. "We've got work to
do I've rested long enough"
