Subject: USS Calypso: seeing some more people, getting ready for the
next mission
<snip from ³Who Counsels the Counsellor²>
Lorn waited a few seconds patiently as he finished his conversation.
"Are
you finished, Ensign?" he asked.
"Uh, yes sir!" Louie said, snapping around to attention.
"Walk with me, if you would." Lorn said, walking out of the Cave.
Louie quickly followed, saying a quick farewell to Casey, and caught
up with
the First Officer.
"So, Ensign," Lorn asked as they walked down the corridor. "What do
you
think of your time so far aboard the Calypso?"
<end snip>
³Well, sir.² Louie said, feeling a bit relieved that he was asking him
about
work. He wasnıt quite sure he knew where he stood with the FO, so him
asking about his personal life might have made him quite a bit
uncomfortable. ³Things seem to be moving along well. I just got to
meet
another one of my crewmen.²
³Yes, Casey.² Commander Lorn started, ³yes, sheıs quite good. Use
her.
She gets things done.²
³Yes, sir. I will.²
³well, Ensign, I just wanted to check on you, and make sure you were
alright.² He said, stepping into the turbolift. ³We didnıt really
have much
chance to talk before everything.²
³No sir.²
³Well, if youıre not coming up, Iıll see you at staff tomorrow.²
³Right,² Louie said. Still standing there, however.
³So, would you like to come up?² Lorn said after a VERY uncomfortable
moment.
³Oh, er,...um...no, thank you sir!² Louie finally spat out.
³Okay then. See you tomorrow.²
Later that night...
Louie walked up to the Holodeck doors. For the most part, he hadnıt
seen
Chief Johnson since their initial meeting. As the department chief in
charge of the computers, he expected heıd probably be getting ready to
kill
himself considering what happened. As Louie tapped the door chime, he
looked at the program running and smirked. It seemed Mr. Johnson had
been
holding back on him.
The doors opened into a casinoıs game pit. To his left, tables where
animatronic beings were playing a game that involved two six sided
cubes
being thrust from one end of a table to another. Louie stood behind
one of
the smaller female ³players,² and when she seemed to throw a seven or
an
eleven, people ³tsk-ed² or ³sighed² in an upset sort of way. To his
right
were more games involving small rectangular playing pieces. On one
side was
an opaque color, while on the other side, or rather, the side facing
the
players, were items. One rectangle or two hearts. Both games
confused
Louie, and so he continued walking through the pit. He walked down a
series
of steps, and as he reached the first landing, he heard a familiar
voice and
song. ³Missed the Saturday dance. Might have gone, but what for?²
Louie quickly walked down the remaining stairs. He loved this song,
and
almost unconsciously, he found himself humming the song. A young
lady, with
a flat surface on her left hand, and her very long wavy hair in a band
atop
her head, walked over to him, ³what can I get faw ya, good lookinı?²
³Oh, um...² Louie said, finally looking at the woman, realizing she
was
wearing what could only charitably be known as a french maidıs outfit.
³nothing for me. How often does he sing here?² Louie asked the
holographic
woman.
³He comes in from time to time.² she said, chewing gum with loud
cracks and
her mouth wide open. ³Mostly he sings stuff like this. I tıink
dereıs
probıems Otween him anı his olı lady.²
³Yes, I imagine you would think that.² Louie said, thanking her for
her
time, and sitting down at a table. As she walked back past him, he
asked
her -- fumbling it, of course < if she could ask the singer to join
him at
his table. She mentioned that heıd need to buy something, so he asked
for
the house specialty. She winked, and shook her posterior as she
walked off.
After a few minutes, and a few more song < and quite a few ³house
specials²
-- Louie was more than pleased to see Chief Johnson sit down beside
him when
the next ³act² came on. ³How did you find me, Ensign? I disabled my
locator.²
³Yes, you did, Chief,² Louie said, smirking a bit at the officerıs
desire to
hide for a few hours. ³But you didnıt make yourself invisible. One
of the
engineers saw you walk in here a few minutes before the locks were
engaged.²
³No, I didnıt. I will endeavor to work on that.² the Chief commented
sipping at his water.
³Though, I must commend you, with your voice, that was an incredible
performance.² Louie said, holding up his drink, toasting his
department
chief.
³Thank you, sir. But, if possible, Iıd prefer it didnıt get out.²
Martin
said, sitting ramrod straight, sipping his water.
³Iım sorry, Chief. Why not? You were incredible!² Louie said,
slightly
confused. While he himself had a passable voice, he was much more
proficient at the saxophone. ³I would love to play beside you, one
day.²
³I would enjoy that, sir, but please, Iım a small bit embarrassed by
my
voice.² Later, Louie would look back at this conversation and laugh.
Martin (aka Marty) had one of the smoothest voices that Louie had ever
heard, and heıd played plenty of times with his dadıs band.
³Iım sorry to hear that. I was really quite impressed by it.² Louie
said,
tapping the table to the beat of one of the songs. ³What was that
first one
I heard? ODonıt get around much any more?ı²
³Yes, that was my dadıs favorite song.² He said, rather wistfully.
³He
was a Jazz musician.²
³Mr. Johnson, it appears youıve been holding out on me.² Louie said,
standing up. ³So was my dad.² He said revealingly. Shaking the
computer
chiefıs hand, ³you did a good job. And your dad would be proud.²
Louie
said, in a truly shocking reversal of roles. He was 27 years old,
while the
chief was more than 40 years old.
³Thank you, sir.² Martin and Louie started to leave the ³casino.² As
they
started walking out, the ³French Maid² told them to come back any
time.
³So, sir, what brought you down to my little place here? Did you need
anything?²
³No, chief, I just wanted to say hi. I thought you might be having a
tough
time over the last few days.²
³well, sir, truth be told, I was. Iım getting better. Music can be
very
helpful at times.²
³Yes, chief. Yes, it can.² Louie said, as they walked out, the door
closing behind them.

MD 4:0700
Louie walked into the briefing room just a few moments before the
Captain
did. He was a bit more nervous than before. Maybe it was that
everyone
seemed a bit more on edge. Maybe it was his little tet-a-tet with
Chief
Johnson last night. Either way, when heıd awoken this morning, he
immediately tensed up. So, when the captain "Is there anything new to
re****t?" He almost instantly spoke up.
³Yes, Captain. Since our...incident resolved itself, computer
efficiency is
up over 17%, a marketable increase. Computer core teams are still
looking
at the system, but I think we have probably plateau-ed out.²
³Good, ensign. Let department heads know when your team is finished.
Make
sure that you also let Commander Lorn know anything you find.²
Captain
Brant said rather sullenly. After listening to a few more senior
staff
members re****t, he continued on with the next briefing. Louie
listened
carefully. Heıd studied the neutral zone at the Academy. Not the
kind of
place you really wanted to be caught with your pants down. He was
surprised, though, that a science station wasnıt better armed. A team
of
Marines really could get smacked down pretty quickly, especially
now-a-days.
<snip>
Turning to the Ops Officer, "Barring anymore 'incidents, we should be
there
in less then two hours. Louie, I want you to make sure that everything
is up
to snuff. The last message Starfleet received from them was quite
garbled.
We as yet ,have been unable to raise the base from here, either. We
have no
idea what we are going into. But with Romulan's only a few light years
across the neutral zone, I want to be sure we're ready for anything!"
"Yessir!" Coltrane snapped off instantly tapping on his padd.
<end snip>
Louie tapped his PADD quickly, sending out an ³all hands² to his
team. He
was certain that by the time he went downstairs to the Ops office,
theyıd
all be standing in front of him. That having been said, he quickly
took a
snapshot of the situation, and sent it down to the PADDs of all of his
five.
They were going to be ready for this. Everything from soup to nuts,
as the
saying went. Torpedos, phaser arrays, sensor arrays, engine and
computer
cores were going to have be checked. With no chief engineer, he
wasnıt
quite sure who he was supposed to be interfacing with. Chief Petty
Officer
Kendrell was fine. Probably good, but not a Chief Engineer.
As the meeting broke up, he quickly walked out and tapped his badge.
³Coltraine to all Operations staff. Please meet in main engineering.
Coltraine out.²
Louie said, entering the turbolift. ³Main Engineering,² he said as he
felt
the lift snap into motion. OThis was going to be a big one. Just
like that
time with the producer...ı
****
Respectfully submitted,
Ensign Louie Coltraine
Operations Manager
USS Calypso
