Subject: [DL-W] In the still of the night (JP)
**Day 11, Some time after midnight**
<Gob is back, with a wild dragon who is injured,> Shyla informed her
rider.
Faylen sat up in her bed, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. <Another
one?>
<This one says he's been held captive and beaten.>
Faylen sighed shaking her head, <Who is tending to him?>
<The healer Ari.>
<Ari??? Does that woman ever sleep?> Faylen asked with raised eyebrow.
Already she was pulling on a pair of trousers and a tunic. She then
slipped
on socks and boots and tied her hair back in a hasty ponytail.
<I had best see what I can do to help.>
***
"He's scared," Faylen said, watching as the redheaded dragon healer
worked
on the warren's newest arrival.
"And I suppose he told ya that himself?" Ari replied, pushing a lock
of
hair off her face.
"Not in so many words, I could just sense it." Faylen explained.
"And I suppose ya can sense where he be hurtin' as well?" Ari
responded.
"Actually, yes, I can. Need any help here?" Faylen asked.
<TAG Carys!>
***
Xanthia awoke and found herself again in her room. Time had lost all
meaning. The last thing she remembered doing was feeding and bathing
Alina
and then reading her a story. Life does go on, she reminded herself,
looking at the child sleeping in the crib across from her bed.
<What time is it?> Xanthia asked Maxima.
<After midnight. You should be asleep.> the black and red sent back.
<I was thinking of a walk through the garden.>
<There's a new wild one here,> Maxima cautioned, <Ursa's rider would
be upset.>
<Perhaps you are right. How did he get here?>
<Nightwind's rider brought him here.>
<Gob's back? But how? What happened.>
<I'm not sure yet.> Maxima responded.
***
Xanthia padded out in bare feet to the kitchen. She searched the
cabinets
to see what she could find to eat at this late hour and found some
cookies.
"Coffee and cookies... sounds good," Xanthia decided.
"Warm milk is better for you, and will help you sleep."
Xanthia's spine stiffened at the voice. She turned around reluctantly.
"Th'rin... I... I'm sorry."
"For what? For avoiding me?" He walked toward Xanthia, and the look in
his
face scared her. She took a step back but she found her back against
the
cabinets as he continued to approach.
"For not telling me about the baby? For not calling me so I could do
something?" he finished, taking her arms in his hands.
"For disappointing you," Xanthia replied.
She looked at him with fear. This was not the same man she fell in
love
with, and there was no love in his eyes, it was not the same look he
had
for Merissa when she'd lost her baby. This was different.
He released her and sat down with a sigh, "You didn't disappoint
me..."
There was no way he could express what he was feeling. Not to her.
Not
now. He couldn't tell her how he felt life falling down around him. He
couldn't tell her how he just wanted to get away .. away from all the
hard
stuff .. all the pain. He forced bland eyes back on her. "Besides, I
know
you're well taken care of. You don't need me."
"I don't???" The petite redhead's brow furrowed. She looked into his
face,
searching for answers .
"What am I, Th'rin?" she finally asked.
"I don't understand?" he said.
"What am I to *you*, Th'rin?" Xanthia asked more pointedly.
"You're the mother of my children... child," he corrected, "you're my
best
friend."
Xanthia's lip trembled with fear as she asked the question which
pressed
most in her mind, "You're mate?"
"Merissa's my mate, you know that."
"But I'm not," Xanthia stated more than asked, tears stinging her
crystal
blue eyes as she searched his face for validation, some sign of hope.
"No, Xanthia, you're not. I thought you knew."
"Evidently not," Xanthia answered stiffly. "Well, at least now I do."
She looked between him and the plate of cookies, torn and not even
sure she
wanted to eat them at this point. Deciding to leave with her pride
intact,
Xanthia picked up a single cookie off of the plate and with her head
held
high she left the kitchen and went to her bedroom.

<My rider, I have news,> Caradoc woke Latnem.
<What? My friend, it's a little late for dragon gossip.> the mind
healer
yawned.
<Not gossip, news,> the dragon retorted.
<What news then?>
<Nightwind's rider is back. He escaped with a wild dragon. He's
talking
with Firefly's rider now.>
Latnem sat bolt upright on his bed, suddenly wide awake. He reached
for his
pants and boots. <I'll be right there. Is there more?>
<It's Xanthia.> Caradoc began, causing Latnem to stop as he started to
pull
on the first boot. <She's crying.>
<Where is she? What's the matter? Is it about the miscarriage?> he
asked,
trying to be calm and reasonable.
<She's in her room, and she keeps saying, 'I'm not his mate.' She's
thinking about Areena's rider.>
<Shell shards!> Latnem cursed. There were times he hated being proven
right, and this was one of those times. <Is she thinking of hurting
herself?>
<No, my heart, she's just crying. Are you going to her?>
<Not this time, Doc. She knows who she can go to for help, and Dru'Kar
is
right next door. Let's see how this plays out,> he replied, pulling on
his
first boot at last, and then the second one. He went to the ledge and
mounted the blue. <Take me to the green. Gob's a child, he'll need me
more.
Just... Keep an ear out for her, let me know if anything changes.>
<<TAG Eddie... Does Gob need to talk with the mind healer???>>

**Day 11, Early Morning**
Xanthia awoke with her daughter, and uncertain what else to do she ran
a
brush through her hair and Alina's, then dressed first herself and
then her
child.
"Mamma?" the little girl asked, putting a chubby hand to her mother's
face.
"Want to see Dru'Kar?" Xanthia chirped as happily as she could as she
buckled the little girl's shoes. She didn't want to be alone in the
apartment, or her garden, or anywhere else for that matter. She spent
enough time alone and crying during the night.
"Dru'Kar!" the little girl cheered in response, dimples forming in her
cheeks as she grinned gleefully.
<Well, come on! Let's go!> Xanthia sent mentally to the child, taking
her
by the hand.
<<NRPG: Tag Keeper! Arlene, I'm sure that Xanthia and Merissa will run
into
each other somewhere along the line? Not sure how that would go
though,
whether Xanthia would seek her out, or perhaps she and Th'rin talked
and
Merissa seeks out Xanthia?>>
