Subject: [DL-C] JP - Ain't That Slick?

Day 6
Morning

<Snip>
(Put it in the urn?) Ale'bela sniffed at the urn and scenting only
water, so as instructed, she stuck her tongue into the urn as far as
she
could. (But the trees don't need salt water. They like fresh water. Uh
oh...)

<What's wrong?> Bohoc asked as he sensed some distress from the little
queen.

(I'm stuck.) Ale'bela cried, (My tongue is stuck!)
<end snip>

Bohoc glared at Trissana, <Now what are we going to do?>

[We need to get her out,] Trissana pointed out, then realized that
Bohoc
was expecting a better idea. [Um, well...suppose I take hold of the
urn, and you take hold of the queen, and we both pull?]

Bohoc looked at the little queen and the urn. <And just how are you
going to hold onto the urn?>

Trissana reached out a claw and tried grasping the urn, but found that
because of its small size this was harder than it looked. Finally,
she
decided on a new tactic...she gently clamped her teeth onto the end of
the urn, which put her nose only a matter of inches from Ale'bela's.
[Okay, this should work.] Hopefully, she wouldn't need to bite down
too
hard on it, since she didn't want to have to spit out pottery shards.

Bohoc hooked his claws around the little silver and green queen's tail
and gave a sharp yank.

Ale'bela cried out in pain as the two older dragons pulled her apart.

{OWW ow ow ow ow}

Bohoc dropped his end, <Oh, sorry!>

Trissana let her end drop as well, and cocked her head. [Hm, she's
really stuck. How about if we rub oil all over her to make her nice
and
slippery?]

{I don't think rubbing oil *all* over her is going to do anything when
all that is stuck is her tongue.}

Bohoc sidled up to Moondancer, <You wouldn't happen to know where we
can
get some oil?>

Moondancer nuzzled Bohoc. {Anything for my favorite cuddle partner}
Moon
took off for the stores to find some oil.

When Moondancer returned a few moments later, it was with a jar of
amber
liquid clutched gingerly in her paws. [This is grease,] she told
them.
[The humans get this out of meat...it's pretty slippery, hopefully it
will do the trick.]

Triss took the jar from her, and called for Bohoc to come and help
her.
The small hunter-green dragon carefully took the lid in his teeth and
began to pull. [It's a bit tight,] he said, and once again Triss
realized that she couldn't maintain her grip. As Moondancer looked
over
Bohoc's shoulder, Triss and Bohoc each took an end of the jar in their
teeth and pulled. The jar came open unexpectedly, and its contents
went
everywhere. Now, all four dragons found themselves coated in the
slippery - but wonderful-smelling - grease. [This was not what I
expected,] Triss admitted.

<Well, we got the oil on Ale'bela, guess we should try pulling again?>
Triss agreed, and they tried to take hold of the little silver and
green
dragon. Bohoc wrapped his claws around the little queen's tail, and
looked over his shoulder at Moondancer. <Maybe if you hold on to me,
too?>

Moondancer happily wrapped her front legs around Bohoc's torso. She
didn't think much about if it was going to help the little queen or
not,
but just that she got to snuggle with Bohoc.

The dragons lined up again as before and started to pull..... and
promptly slipped apart from one another.

Trissana landed on her back on the grass, then snorted in frustration.
[This stuff is *very* slick,] she agreed, righting herself with some
difficulty. She tried to pick up the little queen in her forepaws,
but
both they and Ale'bela's sides were slick with the grease, and she
couldn't get any sort of grip. [Well, this is no good,] she said.
[We
need to get the grease off.] She gave her paw a lick, nodding in
approval at the taste. [We could wash it off in the lake, but that
would be a waste of good-tasting grease. How about if we lick it off
one another....all except for you, Ale'bela, because you have to keep
your tongue nice and greasy so we can get it out of that urn!]

Bohoc licked his snout, <MMM, yes, it's quite good.> So, since he was
already on top of Moondancer and since her face was so close to his
own,
he simply rolled over and began to lick the grease off of her snout.

Moondancer giggled and began licking at Bohoc.  {Mmm you taste yummy}

Triss' eyes widened as Bohoc started licking Moondancer. She
*assumed*
that he would start with her. [Bohoc, hurry up!] she said, stamping a
foot on the now-slippery grass. [I'm standing here all greasy!]

<Well, come over here,> Bohoc called. <I'll clean you while Moondancer
cleans me and then we can all clean each other and...>

A moment later a soft whimpering started coming from the urn. Ale'bela
slumped to the ground as big tears began to roll from her eyes and
down
her cheeks.

{I thought you guys were gonna get me out} the little queen cried.
{I'm
gonna be stuck in here forever and Caly is gonna be mad and I am not
going to be able to be the proper queen....} suddenly a thought
occurred
to her and Ale'bela began to cry harder. {And how am I gonna eat?!?!
Someone please HELP ME!}

The little queen's cries went out to the warren and were answered at
once with concern from other dragons.

Warton, recognizing the small queen's voice, and winged his way over
to
where the trio stood looking guiltily at the still stuck queen. (What
is going on here?) The large red dragon asked.

Triss turned her head as the big red dragon landed. [We seem to be
having a problem with our new queen...we're trying to get her out of
that urn, you see, but she got all greasy and so did we!] She held
out
a glistening forearm to show Warton the problem, and then used her
head
to indicate the spot where Bohoc was still atop Moondancer and was
attempting to lick her clean. [See what I mean?]

Warton walked over to the little queen and saw her nose pushed up
against a large jug. (You're stuck to the jug?)

Ale'bela turned to the newest dragon there. {I got my tongue stuck in
this stupid jug. Now I am never going to be able to see where I am
going, or eat, or drink. I am going to wither away and die...} She
began
crying again, sobs shaking her small dragon form.

(Well, it seems like there is a simple solution. Break the jug!)
Warton stepped forward to do just that.

[Um, just a moment,] Trissana told him, extending her neck to block
his
way over to the whimpering queen. [I need to return the urn when I'm
done with it. I will get into trouble if I return it broken.]

Warton look down at the little queen as Ale'bela began to whimper
again
in distress. It was obvious she wanted it off no matter what, but
Trissana needed the jug. He looked at the two other dragons and knew
they'd be no use at all, as they were rolling in fits and giggles as
they licked each other silly. (Fine, you hold her head, here.) The
large maroon dragon placed Trissana's paws on either side of
Ale'bela's
head and then he grasped the urn firmly between his teeth, making sure
to keep his jaw open enough that he wouldn't bite Ale'bela's tongue.

He snapped his head back with one swift yank, but unfortunately
Triss's
paws were still greasy, as was the little queen's head, and what he
managed to do was to yank the poor silver queen up into the air.
However, the grease had leaked down to her tongue and the little queen
was flung away, as if from a sling-shot. The only good news was that
the unbroken urn remained clenched in Warton's teeth.

Ale'bela landed a few feet from Warton with a thud. She was dazed for
a
moment, shaking her head a bit.

{I'm free!! I'm free free free} She danced around and then ran
headlong
into Warton who was just setting himself upright. She buried her head
between his front paws.

{Thank you thank you thank you thank you}

Warton looked startled, and he carefully scooted Ale'bela away with
the
back of his paw. (You are very welcome, little one.)

Ale'bela didn't notice. She happily turned and bound away, going to
find Caly and tell her what happened.

<Awww, isn't she cute!> Bohoc murmured to Moondancer and Trissana.

Triss sighed and rolled her eyes, noting that Bohoc hadn't stopped his
furious licking on Moondancer even while casting a furtive glance over
at the little queen. [Aren't you done YET?] she demanded, beginning
to
definitely feel that Moondancer was getting all the attention.

<No, umm.... yes, of course!> Bohoc sat up, looking a bit sheepish.
He
looked at Moondancer, <Are we done?>

Moondancer grinned at Bohoc {For now}

Warton sighed and looked at the three dragons, (Now would someone like
to explain how our little queen got her tongue stuck in your...) He
spat out the urn and rolled it toward Trissana, (jug?)

Triss stopped the urn's rolling with her nose and looked up at Warton.
[Well, you see, we were watering my palm tree and to do that the
little
queen had to put her tongue into that urn, and then stuck it in too
far.
Because of that, we all ended up smearing ourselves with grease - with
which *I* am still covered, by the way - and that's when you arrived.
Does that explain it well enough?]

Bohoc jumped over quickly to Trissana's side and began licking her all
over, <Here, let me!>

Warton just couldn't understand how a dragon like Bohoc could be
joined
with a man like Andahar and he sighed deeply. Then he turned his
attention to Trissana but realized that with Bohoc licking her he
wasn't
about to get a clearer answer than she'd already given. She looked
like
she was enjoying it much too much. He swung his head over and glanced
at Moondancer, (Would you care to explain?)

{They were trying to mix salt and water to water the tree.} She swings
her gaze to the little palm tree. {Bohoc said it needed salt water so
they were using the jug to hold the salt to mix with the water. They
dipped their tongues in the salt and then the water to mix the two.
Ale'bela came by and stuck her tongue in the jug and it got stuck.}

(Oh,) Warton stared at the little tree which obviously did need
water,
(But you don't water a tree with salt water.)

Moondancer smirked. {We know that *now*}

[So, we still have the problem of needing to water my tree,] Trissana
said. [Hm, you know, I would go fill the urn with water, but my paws
are still slick from this grease...] She looked back and forth from
Bohoc to Warton.

Bohoc looked up with his tongue still sticking out, and Warton heaved
another big sigh, (Fine, hand me that jug!)

Warton snatched the jug from the slippery Trissana and took off with
it
toward the river. When he returned he saw the three dragons below him
rolling about trying to lick the grease off each other. He turned the
urn over and dumped the cold water across the three and then the tree,
dropped the jug and flew back to where his rider would be waiting.

Subject: [DL-W] JP - To Everything There is a Season

Day 11
Pre-Dawn

Echoes of loss and pain played through the emotions of the riders as
their dragons mourned the loss of the eggs. The sadness penetrated
the
dreams of those that had been asleep.

Merissa woke to heart-wrenching sobs as her scattered memory filled in
the missing details of her own personal losses. Her little family was
falling to pieces and there was nothing she could do to hold it
together. The baby that Th'rin had wanted so badly was gone. The
baby
that Xanthia had carried was gone. Their family was being torn apart
from pressures from the outside and pain from the inside.

She had heard some voices and then the door to Xanthia's bedroom slam
closed. Soft sobs could be heard. Merissa's throat had tightened in
shared grief as she had imagined Xanthia crying over her baby that
would
never be.

Merissa tried to sleep, but she tossed and turned, until finally,
unable
to stand her lonely bed a second longer, she had risen and pulled on a
blouse and skirt.

She tiptoed out of the apartment and down onto the hatching sands.
She
approached the sleeping lavender queen and gently leaned her cheek
against Chrysthal's neck. Nestled in the warm sand between the large
queen's forelegs were two smallish eggs.

Her eyes searched the dimly lit sands for the dark shapes of what had
been the rest of the wilder's clutch and tears sprung forth again.
She
stumbled across the sands to the shattered eggs and collapsed beside
them. So much loss, she sobbed, so much loss.

---
Ari had worked fervently on the wilder called WindFree. She had, with
the help of J'red and Gob and others got the others to step back to
give
them the space they needed. The Wilder had been agitated when so many
of the dreaded humans began to gather. If not for the promises from
Gob, and her insistent pleas to let her help him, Ari was sure he
would
have bolted.

J'red had not been pleased to find her and Gob in such close contact
with the unknown wilder. And she felt the only reason he had not
taken
the action he wished to, was in fact Gob refused to leave his side
until
she could bind his wounds.

Ari was glad things had worked out, and now he was in the grazing
pasture resting, with Azhy to sit with him. With J'red and Pav'lo
busy
with Gob, to learn all he knew, she headed back to the resting female
to
check on her and see how the eggs fared.

She was surprised to see the warrenlady sitting among the broken
shards
of the clutch weeping. At first Ari feared that there was more bad
news, and rushed to her.

"My Lady, what be wrong? Do ya need my help?" She asked worriedly as
her mind went in various directions all leading to the same
conclusion,
something was horribly wrong.

Merissa raised her tear-streaked face to look in surprise at the young
healer. "Ari? What are you doing here?"

Ari took her hands and held them and looked into her face as saw her
deep anguish and squeezed her hands to try to show some sort of
understanding of her grief.

"WindFree be restin, and I know that Dalmar rests, so I came ta sit
with
the eggs for a time, and ta also check on the female." Ari answered
softly. I did not expect ta have company." She smiled gently.

"And, what may I ask be the reason ya be here at this time in the
mornin? Ya know ya be needin thy rest, tis not been that long since
ya
..."Ari's sentence stopped when she realized what she had almost said.
She closed her eyes for a moment, to hide the tears she knew were
there,
ready to spill and Ari feared the flood that would follow, and so with
inner strength she pulled from, she forced them back down.

Merissa sighed, "Since I lost the baby? Say it Ari. I'm so tired of
everyone walking on eggshells around me.... And eggshells are why I'm
here. What happened, Ari? What happened to the female to have caused
her to lose almost all of her eggs? The poor little things. So many
lost babies...." Her voice caught and she swallowed a sob.

Ari sighed and nodded as Merissa pointed to the scattered pieces of
shell on the ground around them. Ari looked over to where the female
rested and back to Merissa.

"I do not know." She confessed. "Tis not natural, that be all I be
sayin on that.until I can test them, I can only guess." She picked up
a
small shard and it crumbled in her fingers.

"Somethin caused this." Ari showed Merissa how easily the shell
crumbled
and turned to a powdery dust.

"Twas the breakin shells that be the cause of her pain, not the
attack."

Ari smiled wistfully at Merissa and shrugged. "I promise ta tell ya
first, I can trust ya." Ari mumbled softly as her mind pondered on who
and what could have caused this.

"Thank you. Do you still have the arrow that you took out of the
female?" Merissa asked unexpectedly.

Ari nodded. "Aye I do, I have it at the campsite where WindFree and
Az
are." Ari answered and looked at her. "Why?"

"Just a hunch... but test it for poisons," Merissa said softly. "And
the scat of the female, test that, too."

Ari nodded. "Sheldon did say the arrow twas one that be used for
fightin. Not for huntin." Ari offered. "I had not thought to test the
arrow." Ari replied. "Aye I was gonna test everythin, just like I
tested...Xanthia."

Merissa nodded sadly. She knew that Xanthia's baby loss hadn't been
due
to poison, but Merissa still held those that had poisoned her with
that
loss as well, for if there hadn't been so much stress in their home,
then Xanthia might not have lost the baby. "Perhaps you should check
with your parents and see if they have seen any other ruined
clutches."

Ari nodded and tucked that little bit of information away for later,
when she had the chance to test and go through the findings. She
would
find out who did this. She would also find out who had captured and
harmed WindFree. She vowed not to let this incident slip away, like
the
dead wilder queen who died leaving behind only 3 eggs.

With that thought suddenly in her mind, she began to ponder if this
was
a systematic elimination of the wilders, to slowly kill them off, to
make it appear natural, so no one would notice until too late.

Merissa's idea for checking with her parents was a good one. She
would
also ask Azhy, had his clutch mate noticed anything different,
strange?
Had the dragons noticed dead and dying dragons?

As Ari sat with Merissa quietly surrounded with the broken shards
around
them Ari felt an overwhelming sense of deep loss and grief. She found
that the tears from earlier would not stay in check. She glanced over
to
Merissa and saw that she still silently wept.

Ari felt the tightening of her throat, the burning in her chest and
the
difficulty to breathe, and the stinging of her eyes. She felt a soft
gentle caress of love fill her and the tears fell.

Though still aching at her own grief, Merissa couldn't help but be
moved
by the sorrow of the young healer. She moved to her, putting her arms
around the young woman as they rocked together in shared anguish.

Ari feeling herself in an embrace of sisterhood let her tears mingle
with Merissa's and even though Ari thought her heart would break, felt
herself comforted in this rite of grieving together as women down the
ages had in times of difficulties and strife.

Ari allowed herself to be swallowed up and carried away with the flood
of tears as they rocked together.

Such a loss, was all her heart seemed to scream out to the night. How
can we bear such a loss?

Dragons picked up the pain and they began to keen for the losses.
Chrysthal raised her head as she felt the grief flowing through her
warren. Her bell-like mindvoice gentled the distress as she rose
slowly
and made her way over to her rider. A warm, soft breath flowed over
the
two women as she sent out comfort to them.

Ari, feeling the love, the comfort and the calming effect of the
solace
that spread over her, was reminded of Azhy; his love and concern for
her. Ari was then reminded of the love the dam had shown her through
the
years; she had been given the gift of all that she shared.

Ari clung to Merissa as they wept in each other's arms.

The gentle love of the queen eased the sorrow in their hearts as the
women's grief ebbed and exhaustion overtook them. Silence covered
them
and Merissa felt the familiar ache lower itself into the emptiness of
her heart, but her weeping was over. It was time to pull herself
together and be the warrenlady that was expected of her.

---
Noting that it was near to dawn, Merissa whispered to Ari, "How about
some tea?" Merissa smiled, "Come on inside."

Ari nodded and realized how exhausted she suddenly was. Tea sounded
so
wonderful. Ari loved tea, and the memories of the warmth and comfort
it
brought along with it. She took a deep breath, more like a heavy
sigh,
but it helped with the heaviness of her heart.

Ari slowly rose, stiff in every joint and muscle and extended her hand
to help her warrenlady to her feet.

"Let me escort ya, My lady." Ari spoke softly. "And, I be pleasured
ta
share a cup of tea with ya."

They entered through the stairs that led up from the hatching sands,
directly into the kitchen of warrenlady's apartment. Merissa put the
kettle on and took out a few of her special blends. She sniffed them
before selecting one, with a slight smile.

Ari watched her little ritual and smiled, for she too had such a one,
certain blends for certain times. Ari looked around the room and
remembered the last time she had been here, and wondered if this
circle
of anguish would ever be broken.

When had life gotten so complicated? When had it changed, so that now
the lessons hurt and left real scars?

Ari turned her thoughts back to those that she needed to be thinking
of,
her wounded patients and those two precious eggs, the only survivors.
She looked up and saw Merissa watching her.

Ari was suddenly very aware of how she looked. She was covered from
head to foot with dirty bloody clothes. She wondered if her face
showed
the tracks of her tears along with the debris from such a busy day.

Merissa's dark eyes sparkled with compassion and understanding. For
now, Ari's internal pain needed tending to. There would be time to
clean up later. The kettle's whistle broke her thoughts and she
turned
to warm the tea pot, add the leaves, and pour the water. She brought
the pot and cups over to the table. Then she brought over a basket of
muffins, before joining Ari at the table.

Ari sat and waited for the tea to be poured and she placed both hands
around the cup as if she could warm her soul with it. Ari took the
time
to inhale the fragrance of the tea and let it wash over her, one more
step in the calming of her soul.

She tentatively tried the tea, finding it perfect and took a small
sip,
held it in her mouth, and then released it and felt it slide down her
throat, warming her as it cascaded to her stomach.

"Tis a sweet blend, My Lady" Ari whispered with a faint smile.

"Thank you." Merissa inhaled deeply before she took a sip of her own
tea. Sighing deeply she murmured, "Odd how something as simple as tea
can be so comforting?" She opened her eyes and looked at Ari with
concern. "You need to rest, Ari. You will do none of them any good
if
you collapse, and you are the only one that the wilders really trust."

Ari looked up into the warm dark eyes of the warrenlady and saw the
concern within them.

"Aye." She replied softly. "I need ta rest, it be true, but I canna
leave them, I will rest for a time with Az." She answered.

"I also need ta run the tests, and check on Windfree, and the female
should be wakin up and I know that she needs Dalmar there, and so I
need
ta be there as well." She offered sharing with her part of her mental
list of all that needed to be done.

"I promise ta get rest, My Lady." Ari promised

"Such dedication," Merissa smiled, "You should have bonded to a queen
dragon."

Ari looked at her in surprise. "Nay, My Lady. My heart, my soul, it
be
part of Az's." she offered hoping that explained it all. Ari shook
the
notion away from her thoughts as one did a pesky fly.

No, Ari was happy with who she was, and what she was. Ari never
wanted
anything to change. She liked being the dragonhealer of Whiteriver,
she
loved being bonded and joined to Azhy, and she loved being J'red's....
Her mind stopped. He had told her of his love, and he did seem to
want
to be with her, but.... Ari pushed that secret hope away and back
where
it was kept safe.

"I enjoy who I be, My Lady." Ari replied again after a moment of
quiet.
"I wish to be the dragonhealer, and part of Whiteriver."

"Merissa, Ari. Please call me Merissa!" She said it gently, but
firmly. "If you insist on calling me 'My Lady' I'll have to start
calling you 'Princess'." She winked.

Ari blushed and fought the tears that suddenly came up. Ari took a
deep
breath and tried to smile and nod her head. She took a sip of tea and
sighed heavily.

"I don't want ta be a princess." She admitted. "I just want ta be a
dragonhealer, and live here in Whiteriver and be... me."

"And I want you to be happy, Ari. For all you give to others, you
deserve that." Merissa reached across the table and put her hand over
Ari's blood encrusted hand. "And I'm a bit selfish, as I want you to
stay here at Whiteriver, too."

Ari smiled and nodded and tried to say something, anything, but she
could not. Her body rebelled and she did not have the strength to
fight
it. She blinked back the tears and squeezed Merissa's hand to let her
know she thanked her for her kind words.

As her hand held Merissa's she thought this was the number of people
who
wanted her to stay, to live among them. She could count them on one
hand. She suddenly thought of Miss Meriwen and all she promised her.
Ari would rather live at Whiteriver and have just the few like her and
want her here, than to live with all she was promised.

Ari was suddenly tired and knew she needed to make it to Azhy, so she
could rest, or she would sleep where she fell. Ari slowly let go of
her
hand and smiled and pushed the chair back and slowly rose, using the
table to steady herself.

"Tis time to rest My... Merissa." Ari corrected herself. "For both of
us. I bid thee a good day and I shall tell thee as soon as I know
what
I find."

"Promise me, Ari, you will go get some rest before you go to the lab.
If I find you didn't, I'll send Miss Meri after you!" Merissa
threatened in a good natured manner.

Ari nodded and chuckled good naturedly. "Aye, I promise, I will rest
before I attempt ta run the tests that I need ta." She promised. "I
don't be thinkin Miss Meri will be happy with me as it tis, seein as I
have missed my lessons with her ta watch over the dragons. I don't be
thinkin she understands."

Ari smiled and then leaned in and hugged Merissa for good measure and
began to make her way to the door that led back to the sands.

Merissa's heart was eased by the gentle company of the dragonhealer,
though the underlying sadness remained. The sun was rising and she
knew
that it was time to start the day.

Chrysthal was waiting for Ari as she came out of the apartment. She
watched her make her way over to check on the female and then came her
way to look at the eggs. <My rider said you are to go rest.>

*Aye, she did* Ari replied. *I shall sleep here for a time, Az is busy
with WindFree, and I can't ask him ta leave, he be needed there,* Ari
tried to explain. *I just need a few moments, and shall be fine*

Chrysthal's large lavender eyes stared at Ari, unblinking, <You cannot
rest here.> Chrysthal stated firmly, then she reached out for a
familiar crimson dragon.

A moment later a young man and his dragon strode onto the sands. He
bowed to Chrysthal and then turned sharply on the young woman who was
straightening up from examining the two eggs.

Ari picked up the pieces she needed to collect for testing later. She
fought the weariness that racked her body. She had to keep going.
She
knew the Queen was going to be difficult, and she did not want a
fight.
She just wanted... well she would not think about that right now, but
she did need just a few winks to tide her over. If she could make it
to
the lab, there was a bench there she could curl up on, maybe that is
where she would go. She smiled at her decision and turned to find
J'red
standing there.

"J'red!" she exclaimed, so happy to see him. Her heart skipped a beat
when she gazed on him. He looked so tired, and she was sure he too had
stayed awake all night. Always so diligent, duty first, she softly
sighed and smiled at him.

Ari was not sure what his look meant but she feared it would not bode
well with her.

The morning light was not kind, "You look..." His voice caught in his
throat as he saw that she was standing by pure will, her body
exhausted.
"Like you need a bath."
