Day 11 after midnight
[Snip]
J'red felt some distress. He thought while this could be isolated, he
didn't believe that it was. He glanced up as he saw Latnem coming
purposefully toward them. He greeted the mind-healer.
"Just wanted to offer my assistance?" Latnem nodded toward Gob.
Pav'lo indicated a chair and Latnem joined them. "How are you Gob?"
The
mind-healer asked.
[End Snip]
Gob looked up and into the deep brown eyes of the healer. "I would be
better
if people didn't need to make such a fuss over me. I'm fine." Some of
the
resentment of being treated like a young kid crept into his voice.
"I see," said Latnem. "Why don't you tell me a bit about it? I've
always
enjoyed hearing the tales of Gob."
The young man looked sternly at the healer for a moment. True he
thought to
himself most people were telling him how great his stories were and
they
would love to hear more if they could find the time. Which sadly never
seemed to happen, yet here was Latnem who honestly wanted to hear his
latest
adventure. "Very well, there isn't much to explain.." Gob began.
The others looked on as the Gob repeated his tale. Latnem however
watched
Gob as he listened to his tale. Latnem would prompt the young rider at
spots
where his story grew confusing or glossed over. The kid was a wind of
contradictions, which made him all the more hard to read but with
great
patience the healer drove to the core. While the others got a more
detailed
explanation of the events and the burnt man that had captured him.
Gob was sent off feeling tired and full from his meal. Latnem turned
to the
others. "He is one brave kid. Though his captor still haunts him and I
imagine he will for some time. If it had been any other young man I
don't
know if they could have held up to it as well. I'm not sure who to
pity more
the captor for having to deal with Gob or Gob having to grow up just a
little more." Latnem got up to leave then turned back, "you may have
noticed
but if not Gob appears to be starting that rebellious stage of life
that all
young men and woman get too. Well I guess that is about it night all."
Day 12
[Snip]
"Oh, wow, so you're HIM... the monster everyone's been
talking...about...er,
um, I mean..."
Pav'lo glared at Gob, "This is Ash'chenon, rider of Wyndamenth, and
you will
be respectful, young man!"
Gob nodded and then grinned, "So... what's it like living in the
wastes? I
bet you got to see all sorts of weird things!"
"Gobaith!" Pav'lo growled in warning
"It's a fair question," Ash said. He paused a moment. "It's
wilderness," he
started. "You're alone, and there's nothing but space and free sky and
all
the flora and fauna that magic has touched. No one to rely on but
yourself
and your dragon. It's dangerous. But, if you risk it, there are sights
that
you won't see anywhere else."
[End Snip]
Images danced in Gobs head as he thought of the possibilities. "Wow, I
wonder if I'll ever see such sights. Thanks Ash.." Gob stumbled a bit.
"Mind
if I just call you Ash, and you can call me Gob. I'm not real good
with all
them formal like names."
[Snip]
Ash'chenon simply stood and watched both of them leave. As Merissa
caught up
with Tatiana and began their conversation, he turned and walked to
where the
trainer had spitted the small lamp. Kneeling, he began to pick up the
broken
pieces.
"Let us hope," he said dryly, "that I never resemble a lamp anytime
soon."
"Why didn't you defend yourself?" Gob said. "Why didn't you draw your
sword?"
"Not necessary," Ash said.
"She almost had a sword at your throat!"
"But was unwilling to kill a dragon, don't you see? Wyn will suicide
if I
die, joined or no... We've had that argument before. The price of
fighting
was too high. She was trying to scare me off. No honor was lost on
either
side." He tried to smile. "Someday she may truly challenge me, and
I'll have
to decide what to do. I don't want her blood, or her dragon's, on my
hands."
He stood, brought the remains of the lamp to Pav'lo.
"Someday, we may have to fight. Chances are we'll both be killed... I
would
have thought we were beyond such foolishness."
[End Snip]
Gob couldn't help but admire his new friend and hoped that it would
never
come to blows. Tatiana meant a great deal to him even though she would
never
spare a moment for Gob other then to tell him if he was doing
something
incorrectly which was often enough as it was. Gob hurried off to
replace the
lamp.
[Snip]
>"I thought the Bear Nomads were wiped out?" Ash'chenon asked.
>"Very nearly so. The four of us are all that are left." Dru'Kar
explained.
>"Soon there will be five!" Gob added, then noted the vial which hung
as a
pendant from Xanthia's neck. "What's that?"
>Xanthia's eyes suddenly turned sad again. "No, Gob," she answered
softly,
"there won't."
>"You lost the baby?"
>Xanthia nodded in answer to the boy's question. "But this vial you
asked
about contains the baby's ashes, so I can carry them close to my heart
the
rest of my life."
Ash bowed. "I grieve for you," he said. "I hope that someday, things
will be
different." His expression did not soften, but he said, "I lost a
child,
once. I know that there are few other things to compare to such a
blow. I am
sorry."
[End Snip]
Gob was speechless for a moment and could only nod during the
conversation.
After they were away from the others, "What's going on, this can't be
happening."
"What can't be happening?" Ash inquired and looked at the young rider.
"Well not long ago I bought a gift for Xanthia and Merissa upon my
first
visit to the city to celebrate their pregnancy. Now both children have
died
and will no longer be born." Gob pulled out his sling shot and toyed
with
the elastic band for a moment. "Come to think of it there haven't been
any
births for some time."
"Your not thinking there is some conspiracy, are you?" Ash asked.
"Not really more of just a random thought I guess." Gob put his sling
shot
away. "Come let me introduce you to the rest of the warren."
-------
Dinner
After showing Ash around the warren, Gob spent the rest of the time
with
Nightwind, Windfree and the other wild dragons. Wilders seemed
grateful for
the young humans help and allowed him to touch them. He heard the
Prince
had arrived and he wanted to go say hello, but it seemed Pav'lo
suddenly had
a great list of things he needed to do.
So when Gob arrived he was late, though he put on his good riding
leathers
he noticed everyone else was wearing fine clothing. Not wanting to
interrupt
anything Gob found a table away from most of the crowd. It was mostly
made
up of staff members who were off duty now. As he set down he felt
something
move and realized he had forgotten about Tethers.
Taking some food from the table and trying to not be noticed he opened
his
leathers so he could feed the squirrel. After Faylen had gifted him
with the
little creature he had do his best to take care of it. In his absence
though
there was no one to feed it and so he decided to bring it to the
dinner with
him and let it get a bite to eat.
Gob noticed Ari was not up front with all the im****tant people which
he
found confusing because from what he heard from the rumors the prince
had
come to see her specifically. The front table was being severed first,
but
other then an occasional bard song or poem it was pretty boring to
young
man. After awhile he forgot about the dinner being served in honor of
the
prince and he let Tethers out on the table.
The desserts were being served, great cakes and sweets of all kinds.
Gob's
eyes got huge when he saw the sweets and his tummy rumbled. Suddenly
Gob
notices that he no longer knew where Tethers had gone. It didn't take
him
long to notice the squirrel had leaped over to the next table.
"Tethers get back here." He whistled softly afterwards.
The squirrel looked back at Gob but didn't move back toward him. Not
wanting
anyone else to know Gob quietly slipped down under the table and move
quietly as he could. "Excuse me pardon me. Sorry about that." He would
say
as he moved around the others.
Gob made his way to the Squirrel and reached up to gather him in his
hands
when she leaped to another table and looked to be getting ready to
jump to
the next. "Tethers NO!" Gob yelled as several eyes looked his way.
Gob gave up the need to be quiet now and raced forward. But Tethers
was too
quick and leaped to the next table. Gob leaped up on the one table
then
leaped after Tethers. Neither boy nor Squirrel took much notice to the
wake
they left behind, as cups and bowls were knocked over spilling their
contents upon the guest.
It was a race now over the table tops as boy tried to catch the
squirrel who
seemed to be heading to the main table a bowl of nuts had been placed
on the
table in front of the prince. Gob knew where the squirrel was heading
and
knew he only had one more chance to capture the squirrel. Running
across the
table deaf to the protest of others trying to eat the young man leaped
to
the main table his body stretched out to catch the Squirrel to keep it
from
eating the princes' bowl of nuts.
The jump was a little short and he crashed into the great cake shaped
like a
dragon and slid across the table the contents finding themselves in
the laps
of the im****tant guest. Gob caught Tethers just before the squirrel
could
take any nuts. "Gotcha!"
The young man set on the table with his feet crossed calming Tethers
down
when he realized everyone in the room was looking at him and the
realization
of what just happened sinking in. "Now see what you done and did
Tethers."

Day 12
Evening
Everyone stared in shock at the squirrel, and the boy who had just
slid,
belly-side down across the table. They watched as he picked up the
squirrel and petted it.
[SNIP]
The young man set on the table with his feet crossed calming Tethers
down when he realized everyone in the room was looking at him and the
realization of what just happened sinking in. "Now see what you done
and
did Tethers."
[END SNIP]
Faylen managed a small squeak, "Is that... my squirrel?"
"Well, he was your squirrel, but you gave him to me but no one
remembered to feed him, so ...." Gob began to explain and then
faltered
as he saw Pav'lo's face. Then, squaring his shoulders he said, "This
is
dinner and Tethers was hungry!"
"Yes, right... so it was." Merissa looked down at the food in her lap
and a small giggle bubbled up.
Pav'lo, however, was not amused. He marched over to his charge "Get
off
of there!"
Gob scrambled off the table and Pav'lo grabbed the boy by the ear and
began to march them away from the table. This startled the squirrel,
which began to squirm. So Pav'lo let go of Gob to grab hold of the
squirrel by the tail so that it wouldn't get loose again.
"Hey! Stop! You can't hold the squirrel by his tail!" Faylen
protested.
Pav'lo turned and stared at the young junior queenrider in
consternation. "What? You want me to let it loose again?"
"Well, no, but..." Faylen looked to Merissa for assistance.
But as Merissa was trying to formulate an answer, Tethers decided he'd
had enough manhandling and curled up on himself, taking Pav'lo's thumb
in his paws and bit... very hard.
Pav'lo's reaction was what could have been expected by anyone being
bitten. He tossed the squirrel into the air.
"Tethers!" Gob yelled and, since Pav'lo had already released his hold
on Gob's ear, went bounding after the flying squirrel.
The fuzzy little animal arched through the air and landed on Analise's
head, where it hung on for dear life. The bard's vocal chords were
tested to their fullest volume as Merissa's mother screeched out a
string of colorful epithets. No one could help her as she danced
about
knocking people and chairs and dishes aside while desperately trying
to
rid her hair of the little creature, which hung on tenaciously.
It was Mahti's unfortunate luck to come in at that moment, summoned as
he had been by Cedric to attend the Prince. He tried to avoid the
woman, but it was also just his luck that he was directly in her path.
The only thing he could do was to grab her and wrestle her into a
chair,
pinning her flailing arms to her side.
Barsel, seeing Faylen's distress at the torment of the squirrel,
sprang
forward and snatched the small animal from Analise's head,
unfortunately
taking with it a small fistful of hair. He quickly turned and
presented
the small bundle to Faylen, who snatched it away and fled from the
dining hall, throwing a withering look at Gob as she hurried out.
Th'rin hurried to Pav'lo's aid and quickly bandaged the wounded thumb.
Analise sat there stunned, as did the entire hall.
Reolden chuckled softly and spoke into the silence, "Why my dear,
Analise, I'd never realized you had quite that great a ... range."
[TAG: Eddie and everyone.]
---
Late Evening
After such an entertaining dinner, Prince Reolden and his retinue were
ready to retire for the evening. As they walked out of the dining
hall
into the night, Merissa assured him that word would be sent out
immediately to the Lords of the Land that he had arrived in Whiteriver
and they would be expected to be in attendance.
"There is, however, one person that I must speak with, privately,"
Reolden told Merissa. "Do you know where Lady... where Ari... has
taken
herself? Can word be sent to her that I wish to have an audience with
her?"
Merissa smiled and said gently, "I'm sure she is with the injured
wilders, and you've already forgotten... not only is she joined to a
dragon, she is also telepathic. Why not have Trendal bespeak her?"
Reolden laughed, "Yes, of course. How did I forget that." His eyes
took on that far away look and when they cleared he smiled at Merissa.
"And you were, of course, correct. She is with the wilder, WindFree."
Merissa expected him to leave her then, but he lingered a moment; his
staff moving away, out of earshot.
"Thank you for a very... entertaining evening," his smile was kind but
his eyes danced with something more. He took her hands in his, "I have
been looking forward to seeing you again, Merissa. I hope we can make
some time to spend together... away from all of this."
Merissa stifled a laugh, and smiled warmly in return, "I promise,
Reolden. We will have some time... alone. But for now, you have to
meet with your cousin, and I have a busy day tomorrow! So,
goodnight."
"Goodnight, dear lady," Reolden stepped back, their fingers slowly
parting as he backed away, and when they had parted, he turned crisply
and walked off, following his staff which led the way to his suite.
