[DL-D] They Are Not Just Stories
<Daere Warren>
<Day 100>
<Early Morning>
Alex frowned as he read the re****t. Things were going badly on the
front, and there was nothing he could do about it. Both his damned
commanders refused to let him in on the conflict, and while combat
against the dark creatures was fulfilling some of his desires for
revenge, his thirst was not even close to being sated. The young
knight crumpled up the re****t and threw it into his fireplace. He
stood up from the soft plush couch he recently retrieved from his
grandfather's estate and walked to his apartment's exit. The night
was on its way out, the darkness giving way to the light. The woods
surrounding the warren were slowly awakening with sounds of life,
and he could smell that the cooks were all ready busily preparing
breakfast. A yawn caught his attention and turned around to see his
roommate slowly waking.
"Good morning, Talafal," Alex said with a smile.
The blue dragon, not quite awake yet, blinked a few times and yawned
again before `saying' hello.
*Feels warm this morning. Its going to be a good day.* Talafal
commented as he stretched and tested his wings. Alex was forced to
grab onto a near-by railing to prevent himself from being blown out
of the cave as powerful gusts whipped around him.
*Be careful you silly dragon!* he said.
Talfal `grinned' *I'm sorry Alex.*, and he stopped flapping. *It's
just so nice to be back in the company of dragons. It makes me feel
all tingly inside. With the egg laying coming soon and with today's
patrol. Its just so . . . so . . . exciting.*
Alex couldn't be cross at his friend, but he also couldn't share his
enthusiasm, either. Unless he was aloud to help with the liberation
of Triylar, he would never regain his station as a Knight. And if he
wasn't a Knight, what good was he?
"Let me change, and we'll go get some breakfast, ok?" he said as he
walked into his side the apartment. As he did he continued to dwell
on his situation.
Sure, he thought, he was fighting the dark creatures, and that was
helping with the liberation, but his Uncle would not see it that
way. The only way he could regain his title would be to give up
being a dragon rider, and that wasn't going to happen anytime soon.
*You shouldn't bother yourself with your Uncle so much, Alex.*
Talafal interrupted. *Remember Sir Dunkle was also condemned by his
Landbound Lord, but in the end, he proved himself to be the greatest
Knight in all of Ralengarde.*
*Those are just stories, Talafal.* Alex replied as he pulled on his
stockings. *Stories . . . *
*They are not just stories!* the dragon interrupted. *Ever since I
was a hatchling, you told me that the legend of Sir Dunkle was more
than a story. It was a way of life. It was a code of behavior that
all Landbound nobility should follow, and we are both nobles. You,
are noble by birth, and I am noble because all dragons are by their
very nature. And I am not going to allow my best friend to dishonor
himself just because he had his feeling hurt by some pompous
drunkard who calls himself the Lord of Triylar. You're better than
that Alex. You're much better than that.*
There was silence between the two that continued until they touched
down near the dining hall. Alex dismounted and then spoke.
*You know that you're showing your maturity again my azure
companion. Thank you.*
Talafal did not reply right away but instead happily launched
himself into the sky.
*Thank you, Alexander, my noble Knight.*
<Later that day>
<In the Infirmary>
<SNIP: FROM THE SECRETS OUT>
Pu****ng the door of the med center open with his foot Alex looked
around. The place was mostly empty with everyone having gone to
watch the hatching. There were a few helpers watching over the
patients. One of them stopped as Alex entered the center with Lyin.
"This woman needs a healer," said Alex firmly. The woman bobbed her
head and zipped out of the med center towards the hatching cavern.
Alex found an empty bed and laid Lyin on it. He held her small hand
in his and looked over her worried.
"Do you know what's wrong Lyin?"
Lyin blinked and a few tears ran from the corners of her eyes and
down her cheeks. She felt another tight pain rising and her breath
caught in her throat.
"I'm pregnant," she whispered before darkness consumed her.
<END SNIP>
"Lyin!" Alex cried as the young lady lapsed into unconsciousness. He
ran towards the exit of the Infirmary and yelled for help.
<TAG: Anyone who would like to help out.>
SUMMARY:
Alex regrets that he is missing the fighting going on to liberate
Triylar and wonders how he is every going to regain his station as a
Knight. Talafal reminds him that being a Knight is more than just
having a title given to him by his Lord.
Later in the day, Alex helps Lyin to the infirmary, where he
discovers that she is pregnant. He yells for help when she p*****
out.
NRPG:
Sorry for the VERY LONG delays between posts. I've had some very
serious writer's block.

Subject: [DL-J] Out to Sea
Day 20
Early Evening
Corwin felt proud of his small wing as the phalanx of dragons swam out
of the cove. They had been practicing this maneuver and it was
gratifying, that with the warrenlady and junior queenriders watching,
they performed it to perfection.
As they reached the open water, Syngnath sank below the waves,
followed
by Kethriss and Khamorray behind him, then the two beside them, until
all of the wing had submerged. The wing swung out to deeper water
following the wingleader along the ****pping lanes toward the windward
islands and beyond. It was already getting dark by the time they
reached the small island where Corwin had earlier cached supplies.
Corwin planned on dividing the wing in half for some practice in
detecting moving and stationary parties in the dark ocean. The
practice
maneuvers, however, were not a game. Neither group would know the
whereabouts of the other. One group was assigned the area between two
islands as their "home base", while the other was out just beyond the
corral reefs that led to the open ocean.
They were then further divided at the discretion of their leader into
scouts, assault force and defenders -- though any rider could be any
one
or all three if need arose. Each side was to find the other's home
base
or detect the movement of scouts/assault forces, and Corwin would
monitor their progress through the sendings of individual dragons and
the two leaders.
Ansel on Khamorray led Dakhrau on Rrone, Dylan on Dru, and Kaliana on
Ryba to the spot between the islands.
Tanami on Kethriss led Raven on Lir Llyr, Summer on Loralei, Clowie on
Faragone, and Keer on Adas. They selected a coral reef that was
easily
distinguished due to a sunken ****p that was slowly being encrusted by
barnacles.
Familiar landmarks were obscured by darkness, at least to the riders,
but the dragons seemed to have an extra sense that kept them from
running into anything. Syngnath had tried to explain it to Corwin,
but
the best the sailor could figure was that the strips on the sides of
the
dragons, which the seadragons used to produce electrical shocks, also
provided the "sixth" sense that the seadragons had for avoiding
underwater objects and sensing when they were approaching or being
approached by things.
Corwin, for his part, took up residence on one of the small islands,
building a roaring fire and preparing for the midnight meal that he'd
planned on serving his tired riders when their training maneuvers came
to their conclusion.
As soon as the riders had gotten into position Syngnath told Kethriss
and Khamorray to begin. Ansel's group seemed the more timid, but it
was
only natural as they were one rider short due to Eliase's condition
and
her being left back at the warren. Corwin had debated whether he
should
join Ansel's group, but realized that he could not possibly monitor
both
sides if he were part of one.
Ansel split his group into two, with Dylan and Kaliana scouting out
the
location of the opposing stationary force. Dakhrau and Ansel remained
behind, hiding themselves as best they could among the seagr*****
between the islands.
Tanami's group split between the defenders, Summer and Raven, and the
assault force, Clowie, Keer and Tanami, who went out in search of the
other team's base.
The first re****ts seemed odd. The dragons re****ted sensing movement
in
the water. Syngnath attributed it to schools of fish or perhaps
dolphins. The defenders between the islands were sure that the
opposing
team's assault force had passed nearby, but when Syngnath checked with
Tanami they were no where near their vicinity.
[TAG: all maritime wing characters. Corwin is getting strange re****ts
of his riders seeing things out in the dark... have some fun with
this!]
---
<This is also odd,> Syngnath re****ted.
Corwin shook his head, wondering if perhaps seadragons just didn't
maneuver well in the dark, <*What else have they found?*>
<This is from Ryianne,> Syngnath stood with his head cocked to the
side, looking like a very big puppy trying to catch the sound of
something that he wasn't quite sure he'd heard.
<*Ryianne is at Jasra with Eliase.*> Corwin reminded the sea-green
dragon.
Syngnath snorted a bit of steam, <You think I don't know that? That
is
why this is so odd. She's talking about an assault force coming.>
<*Perhaps she's dreaming? Or she's in communication with the others
and
warning them? You had better tell her she cannot help her
clutch-mates
in this, and if she does I'll view it as cheating.*>
Syngnath passed that on to the young dragon, but he wasn't exactly
sure
it was what she had been doing.
<Now Keeza is also talking about assault forces,> Syngnath told his
rider.
<*Ah, perhaps they are also doing a practice drill in the warren. I
wouldn't worry too much about it, in that case.*> Corwin felt a sense
of relief as he imagined Hsina commanding the dragons and Cabral
infantry on maneuvers.
<If you say so...> Syngnath again wasn't completely convinced.
<Kataani! Corwin they've run into a group of Kataani!>
<*What? Who?*>
<Dru and Ryba.>
<*Are they sure?*>
<Yes, the Kataani soldiers have formed up into a triangle with sharp
spears facing out on all three sides. The seadragons don't dare go
too
close.>
<*No, tell them to stay back. Can you get a fix on their location?*>
<Yes, and they aren't too far away from Kethriss, Adas and Fara.>
<*Good! Let Dru and Ryba know that we are on our way! Then tell
Tanami
that the game is over and that there is a real situation on hand and
to
bring Keer and Clowie with her to aid Dylan and Kali!... And Ansel!
Let
him know, too.*>
Corwin was already clambering onto his dragon's back as he gave the
orders for all of the wing members to merge and meet up near where
Dylan
and Kaliana had cornered the Kataani soldiers.
[TAG: all maritime wing members -- again! This is a small group of
Kataani rearguard. What do they do with them?]
---
Summary:
Day 20
Early Evening
Corwin leads the maritime wing on night maneuvers.
Evening
Arriving at the chosen location, the maritime wing is divided into two
teams while Corwin monitors from an island. The maneuvers are fraught
with confusion as the dragons keep re****ting strange and unexplained
underwater movements. This is compounded by unusual messages from the
warren. While scouting for the opposing team's base camp, Dylan and
Kaliana come upon a rearguard of Kataani soldiers, who immediately
form
up into a protective triangle, with deadly spears at the ready.

Day 5 morning
Dargis surveyed the potted plants and trees laid out in
front of him. He had managed to keep them all alive through the
winter months with lots and lots of care. With the spring
conditions looking like they were going to stay, now was the time to
get them planted outside and in the ground where they could flourish
properly.
It also provided the potential searchlings a chance to do
something with themselves besides wondering if the eggs were going
to survive. With all the doom and gloom surrounding the warren as
of late, something had to be done to take their minds off of it, if
only for awhile.
Looking at each of the potential candidates, he realized
that he wasn't much older than any of them and he realized that he
had only really been at this for a couple years. It amazed him how
time passed so quickly at times, "Okay, we're going to be planting
these trees and flowers in designated areas. With the winter having
destroyed most of the plants outside, this is going to take lots of
work. So grab your gardening implements and let's go!"
Most of the searchlings weren't too thrilled with the idea
of doing the work, but since the higher ups had told them, too, they
were choiceless in the matter. Dargis chuckled to himself as he
knew that once they were bonded, they might welcome this work after
being put through having to train with their newborn dragons.
**Are you saying that I was a burden** came the telepathic jab from
D'lion, who was lumbering beside him.
<No, you weren't a burden D'lion, but it was lots of work to take
care of you initially. Feeding you, oiling you, and all of that
training learning to ride you and stuff like that.>
The two continued to banter silently back and forth until
they reached the first planting ground. Dargis stripped off his
****rt, knowing that this work was going to be hard. Asking for
everyone's attention, he demonstrated how to dig proper holes for
both trees and flowers, and how to place the flora in the holes
properly.
After demonstrating, he both helped and observed the
searchlings as they went to work, digging and planting away. It did
Dargis' heart good to see the plants finally get placed outside and
with his assistance and others, they would flourish again.
The planting continued for awhile when Cherry came running
up, "Um, Dargis?"
Dargis nodded, "Yes, is there a problem?"
"Well, I think you'd better come see this," Cherry replied,
her voice a smidge shaken.
Following the girl over to a hole, he saw a skeletal hand
rising up out of it. He walked over and examined it, "Dug it up?"
She nodded, pulling something out of her pocket, "It was
holding this."
He took it from her, a leather necklace with polished
stones, "Well, I guess we should dig the rest of the body up. And
we need somebody to get a healer here, see if they can tell us more
about this body."

Day 4 at an unknown time.
Breezy has left, the guards have left, and Ranker is sitting alone in
this dark cell. The only light is the light coming in through the bars
from the lanterns in the corridor.
sitting on the bed thinking to himself. "Gosh, if Father was alive I
would get beat for sure for what I've been doing. Even at my age, and
build Father would still beat me. That man shows no fear, and always
thinks before he acts. Why can't I?"
Just then Ranker hears a voice in his head. Although firmiliar, he
does not reconize it. It is stern, and serious.
"Valor.......Valor......A knight is sworn to Valor."
It is not his father's voice, but the voice is familiar to him, but it
is usually more playful. It is Kautivrad, and he repeats the saying
again.
Ranker gets off the bed, and kneels down in front of it. Puts his
palms together in front of his chest, and says out loud in a stern,
deep, serious voice for he truly believes what he says.
"A knight is sworn to valor!"
"His heart only knows virtue!"
"His blade defends the helpless!"
"His might upholds the weak!"
"His word speaks only truth!"
"His wrath undoes the wicked!"
He repeats this three times before he sits back onto the bed.
[Thank you Kautiv. I almost forgot the code.]
{Good thing I remembered then huh?}
they both laugh in their heads.

Day 4 late afternoon
In a hot, damp, dark, place.
"Hello, is any one there?" A small young voice of an unborn dragon
lets out to all in the hatching area.
"What is it now Semaj?" His mother answers.
"Why is no one talking to me? I'm so lonely here, and I don't feel
good. Mama please talk to me."
"It is okay my son." Malani said her warm voice like a soft carress to
the young dragonette. "The others are resting." She cooned gentally.
"They don't feel good either, and you should be resting to, not
bothering your clutchmates."
"But there's so few voices left talking now. Why have the others
stopped talking? Are they dead too?" The young dragon said with a
wimper of sadness, and curiosity.
"Some are yes." The golden queen replied sadly. "The others are just
in a very long sleep. The ones that are able to talk should be trying
to sleep, but you keep talking to them, and waking them up. Now try to
get some rest, and leave the others to rest, okay?"
"Okay Mama. I'll try. Good night all."
simultaneously all the other dragonettes in a scolding voice yell.
"Good night Semaj!"

Subject: [DL-N] What a strange meeting.
Day 5 Early Evening in the jail
Delilah followed the guard along the barely light path between the
cells. It seemed to go on forever and the dank musty odors invaded her
nostrils, her nose twitching in remembrance of her confinement at
Osran. A stabbing pain began at the base of her skull and the walls
closed in around her as they drew deeper into the bowels of the
cavern. The faint scurrying sounds of other types of residents had her
skin crawling and it took everything she had to keep from dropping the
try and retreating the way they had come. With each step the burning
in her chest grew and she silently fought for air almost stumbling at
one point.
"You okay?" the young guard asked, noticing her hesitation.
Her hands were shaking now and she felt the tray tip but managed to
right it. Unwilling to meet his gaze Delilah nodded trying to take a
breath that didn't make her gag.
After what seemed like forever the came to a more well light area and
she noticed they were almost at the end of the long tunnel. A cell
larger then most sat off by itself with a small outer area that
contained a table and chair and she couldn't help wonder how many and
who had been locked up here. In the cell Ranker lay on the bunk his
large size dwarfing the pallet, and he appeared to be asleep.
The guard used the bludgeon he carried to drum the bars, "Get your
butt up! Dinner's here!"
Silently Delilah set the tray on the small table apprehension swelling
up in her throat almost choking her as the mountain of a man flipped
his legs around to the floor then slowly sat up. Ranker's hooded gazed
scanned the room settling on her, cocking his head he eyed her
curiously.
"So, are you the main course or the dessert?" he chuckled.
The stick hit the bars making a metallic ringing sound that echoed
through the cavern. "Shut your face and mind your manners!" The guard
snapped.
Keeping her head bowed Delilah took the towel covering the food on the
tray then watched as the guard took it and slid it through a small
slot in the bars against the floor of the cell.
She wanted so badly to run, to hide, to still the tremors that crept
up her spine but her feet refused to move then as if some unseen force
pulled her the next thing she knew she was sitting in the chair
silently watching the imprisoned man.
Tearing off a chunk of bread from the small loaf on the tray Ranker
scooped it through the food appearing to relish each bite. The guard
stood looking at the man and then the woman not quite sure what to do.
"Ma'am?"
Delilah glanced over at him her emerald green eyes taking on a
luminous glow in the lamplight. Silently she gazed at the young man
until he shrugged and went over to lean on the far wall to wait.
Looking back at the man in the cell, she watched his every movement
with feline intensity. Even though she appeared outwardly calm inside
a terrible anger was growing. It was men like him that had taken her
very soul from her and she despised him for it, detested everything he
represented. Yet, she didn't even know him. Was it always to be this
way now?
"Not very talkative are ya?" Ranker asked licking gravy from his
fingers.
"I heard what you did to Breezy." Delilah spoke softly. "That wasn't
very smart."
"She'll come around!" Ranker chuckled.
"You're lucky she didn't kill you!" She whispered in answer.
The big man laughed, "She's a feisty one that's for sure! Hey, where'd
you get the scar?"
Delilah's hand flew to her collared throat, her fingers creeping
upward to pull her hair further down on her cheek. "It's none of your
business!"
"Hey don't mind me." In a whisper so the guard don't hear him. "I
didn't mean any thing by that comment about being dessert. I just have
to keep these guards on their toes, so they don't think that they can
push me around. Any ways, don't hide your scars, wear them with
pride." He said the last sentence in a normal tone of voice. "Pride
that you survived. That scar looks like a war scar. Are you a
warrior?"
The girl just shook her head no.
"Hmmm. Ah, I have a scar too. You can't see it. It's a scar on my
soul. I lost every thing, my friends, my family, and the girl that I
was betrothed to. All from some warrens dragons. Yet I still wear that
scar with pride, and I don't hide from my past. As a matter of fact I
even ride a dragon." His face brightened as he spoke of his dragon.
"You would think that I would hate dragons for what happened to my
village, but Kautivrad, that's my dragons name. Some times I call him
Kautiv. Ohh! Kautiv did not destroy my village, or my family, and he
needs me. So I put my hatred away, and I help him in the same way he
helps me. See I have a relation****p with a dragon, a very loving
relation****p with him, even though dragons destroyed my village.
That's what I mean by wear your scar with pride, but you do what you
want, I guess."
Ranker stops talking, and looks to his food to continue eating as he
noticed that she was still sitting there in the chair with him. "Why
are you sitting with me?" He asks mildly. "None of the other girls sit
and watch me eat. So why are you?
Delilah just stared silently at the man her feline-like eyes taking in
every movement of the large man. The walls pressed in on her making it
hard to breathe, but she wouldn't give into the fears that tore at
her. She could see him occasionally glancing up at her while he ate
and it wasn't long before he grew uncomfortable under her silent gaze.
"What?!" Ranker said sternly. "Stop staring at me! If you want to talk
then talk! If you want to just stare at then please leave!"
He stared back at her with anger in his eyes.
She visibly cringed and it took all her strength not to look away.
Months of pent up emotions were reflected in Delilah's eyes and they
began to take on an eerie glow, her beautiful face becoming twisted
with hatred. "You're just like them!" She said softly. Oblivious to
the pain of her fingernails digging into her palms Delilah's lips
curled into a sneer as the man before her melted away and the image of
her most fervent tormentor took his place. Suddenly the dark-haired
woman jumped to her feet. "You sick and twisted bastard! I hope you
die for what you've done!"
Blindly Delilah raced from the room, his calls to her only fueling her
desire to escape. The guards hearing the angry exchange were already
hurrying down the corridor into the small chamber.
"Miss?" one, said hesitantly as the she brushed passed him.
Ignoring everything around her Delilah didn't stop running until she
was outside. The evening air was cool on her flushed face and she
leaned against the rock wall gasping for each breath as the raging
emotions within threatened to engulf her.
"Delilah, what's wrong? Are you ok?" Breezy asked gently touching the
server's arm. Delilah recoiled from the touch as if she'd been struck
and the little redhead quickly pulled her hand back. "Are you ok?
Ranker didn't do anything stupid did..."
Her sentence fell away as Delilah shook her head rapidly. Glancing
over to the small woman. "No," taking a deep breath she straightened
and lifted her chin, "I'm fine!"
Breezy eyed Jeryn's niece critically, "I very much doubt that! But
your uncle was a bit worried so I told him I would check on you! If
you're done I'll walk you back?"
Delilah nodded and fell in step with the little redhead as they made
the trip back to the dining hall in silence.
[..] Meanwhile back in the jail
*What in hell was her problem?* Ranker thought to himself. *Does she
know that man that died? Well after this dumb trial everyone will know
the truth. Even me. Maybe I did murder him without thinking, my mind
has been a little mixed up lately. Oh well...*
"Guard!" Ranker yells, then he hears footsteps after repeting it a
couple of times.
"What do you want?" The guard asked sternly.
"Why was that girl allowed in here if she knew the victim?" He asks
calmly.
"You just sit there, and rot. You don't know anything." The youngest
of the guards slammed his club into the bars forcing Ranker back, "I
don't know what you did to her, but.."
A faint snicker from the other guard, "Ain't ever seen that one run
from any man before! I heard tell she could..."
"Enough!" The Homeguard Captain snapped, Selena's sudden presence
filling the chamber with silence. Looking around she scowled at each
of the men including the prisoner. "Back to your posts!" She ordered
firmly and without a backward glance followed the men out.
"Hey I want to see Breezy on this matter! Anyone listening?!" Ranker
yells down the corridor.
Then he sits back in the chair, and throws the dishes to the floor.
*Damn why did they let her in here? I have enough to think about. Well
with this case coming up, and that Lawrence character running around.
I don't need some wench that knows the victim coming here to harass
me.*

Subject: [Changeling-WW] Hunting for the Hunter
<snip>
The creature reared back. "Creature?!" It intoned in surprise. "I am
more
than some scurrying animal. I am Tsocolanth, Wyrm of the Great Forest,
Keeper of Lore from the Time Before Time." He snorted. "Creature
indeed."
"I misspoke, good Tsocolanth, but you have surprised and threatened
us."
"I am in need of sustenance. If not from you, then where am I to
obtain it?"
<end snip>
Emily thought quickly. Then she moved closer to the wyrm, waving Calyn
off
as he reached for her. She knelt on one knee and looked to the wyrm
with her
most calm and respectful look. "Allow me the honor of hunting for your
dinner then, great Tsocolanth. I will bring you back something to
satisfy
your appetite." She then lowered her head.
The wyrm rumbled and put it's nose right up to Emily's face. She could
feel
it's hot breath on her skin, causing her to flush. Then she felt a
rush of
cool air as the wyrm stepped back.
"Very well. I will allow you to hunt for me, huntress. What you bring
back
to me will determine if I then need to add your friend here to my
meal."
A huge clawed paw came cra****ng down around Miv, trapping her in a
cage of
dragon claw. The wyrm swung it's gaze to Kenisha. "You will entertain
me."
Then it sung to Calyn. "You will go help the huntress find my meal."
With orders given the wyrm settled down, staring at Kenisha.
<tag Kenisha and Miv if she cares to input being trapped>
Emily turned and caught Calyn's gaze and then left the clearing,
assuming he
would follow her.
"What were you thinking?" Calyn hissed in a guarded voice as the two
left
the clearing.
"Hmm?" Emily replied innocently.
"That wyrm could have as much eaten you as talked to you, and there
would
have been precious little you could have done. You may have a way with
the
dagger, but those you have are not even long enough to pierce through
the
wyrm's skin." He chided.
Emily shrugged as she walked, searching for something that would
satisfy a
wyrm's appetite. "I had to do something." She glanced sidelong at
Calyn with
a smirk. "I just found you again. I'd rather keep you for a while."
That caused Calyn to pause in his tracks. "Keep me?" He murmured to
himself.
His confusion came from the fact that he had been thinking the exact
same
thing. With a few long strides, he caught up to her again.
"I apologize from my hasty words. It has been a long while since it
was not
I who was doing the looking after."
Emily paused and turned to him. "We have to look after each other
now." She
smiled and leaned up, pressing a gentle kiss to his lips. "And Miv. So
we
had better find something to satisfy this wyrm."
"Which leads me to my second question. Just what are we to hunt, and
how? I
have no bow or spear, and I do not think that berries and roots will
satisfy
Tsocolanth much."
"Well I have my daggers, and you have a sword at least?"
"Mm." Calyn replied non-commitally as they walked. "Your daggers you
can at
least throw, I suppose. But a sword is only good if your opponent
stands and
fights. I doubt we can convince some creature to face us in combat."
Emily smiled at Calyn and flipped a dagger in her hand. "Perhaps I can
convince them." She then paused and kneeled to check some tracks that
had
caught her eye. A moment later she stood and motioned to Calyn to
follow
her.
Calyn had little doubt that Emily could convince the stars to drop
from the
sky if she put her mind to it, and followed silently, sword at the
ready.
Not sure what she had found, he was prepared to defend her and himself
should whatever creature she followed turned out to be more vicious
than
anticipated.
A loud rustling ahead caused both to pause and tense. A moment later,
the
brush turned aside as a beast exploded from the woods, charging
towards
them.
Emily took a step back before she threw a dagger at the beast. The
dagger
buried itself deep in the flesh of the beast's chest, but didn't slow
the
charging animal. "Umm Calyn..."
The boar was huge, near four foot at the shoulder, and obviously
enraged.
Older wounds along its back suggested that it had been injured, and
made
aggressive by the pain. Emily's dagger seemed only to enrage the
animal even
more. "Go!" Calyn shouted, pu****ng her to one side as he surged
forward to
meet the beast's charge. In fighting, Calyn was in his element, and
moved
with fluid grace, sidestepping the boar's horrific tusks at the last
second,
and sweeping a long cut along its flank.
The boar squealed in rage as it thundered past, then turned to make
another
pass.
Emily moved back, but did not flee. She watched as Calyn slashed at
the
boar. As the beast turned to take another pass at Calyn she let lose
another
dagger. This one buried itself in the neck of the beast. She pulled
another
dagger from her belt as the beast charged Calyn.
The beast was staggered by Emily's second knife, and though it slowed
in its
charge, the momentum carried it forward. Calyn spoke a couple of words
and
spun a full 360 degrees. Taking three quick steps, he launched himself
spinning into the air, passing over the charging boar. His sword
flashed in
the morning sun, and cleaved deep through the boar's neck. The boar
tumbled
and thudding into the ground as Calyn landed in a crouch. He turned
quickly,
and plunged the sword into the boar's chest, giving it a swift death.
Calyn paused to catch his breath, then bent to retrieve Emily's
daggers.
"Remind me to call on you should I ever need to convince someone to do
something."
Emily smiled as Calyn turns and jumped, landing in front of her. He
offered
her the daggers and she reached, pulling him to her as she slipped her
daggers from his hands. "Somehow I think it works easier on you then
the
others." She smirked and leaned up to kiss him.
Calyn stuck his sword in the ground and wrapped his arms around her.
Though
the fight was short, it had made his blood hot. Adrenaline still ran
through
his veins, and he poured it into his embrace, holding her tightly to
him.
There was that primal part of him that feared for her injury or death,
no
matter how unlikely, and to have her so threatened and survive made
him want
her all the more.
He kissed her deeply, his senses focussed upon her; the feel of the
curves
of her body, the smell of her skin and hair, the taste of her lips. A
long
moment passed before his mind came back to him, and he released her
slowly.
He looked into her violet eyes, trying to gauge the woman behind them,
and
the feelings she held.
Emily was caught breathless as Calyn pulled back and looked down at
her. She
was amazed that she could face and fight the huge animal they just had
without a trace of doubt or fear, but looking up at Calyn at that
moment
caused her legs to go weak. The desire in his eyes was mirrored in her
own.
She wanted nothing more than to pull him to the ground with her and
let that
desire sweep them away.
"Maybe after we go feed the wyrm and get camp settled we can slip away
for a
bit..." she offered to him.
Calyn nodded, letting go a breath that he was holding. Pulling his
sword
free, he went over to survey the boar. It was too large to carry, so
it
would have to be dragged back to camp. Thoughts of Miv and Kenisha
came back
to him, and he chided himself for delaying when their lives hung in
the
balance. He cleaned the blade of his sword quickly and sheathed it,
then set
about tying the legs of the boar. As he worked, he glanced over at
Emily as
she cleaned her own weapons.
Emily was slipping her last dagger into her boot then made her way
over to
Calyn. She glanced to him as he picked up the rope, ready to drag the
boar
back. She reached to grab the rope and shrugged of his look. "Don't go
getting all knightly on me now," she grinned at him.
Together they pulled the boar back to the camp, both hoping that the
great
wyrm would be content with the kill.
