Subject: [USS CAPRICORN] - The Hazards of the Job
MD2

Medical Center
Miaren stood leaning against the door and looked over the mess before
her.
Not only had those beasts tore and chewed on everything, they had also
left
behind some not so pleasant droppings and other a sundry offerings.
She collected as best she could for further testing and then called
for a
clean up crew. She had not quite gotten everything settled that she
wanted
out of the room when a familiar knock came.
"Doctor Hywell? Everything alright?" Miaren moaned softly to herself.
Why
did it have to be him? She shook her head and opened the door.
"Aye everything is fine." She replied to a pair of worried eyes and a
few
more behind him.
"Well, the call came in for hazardous clean up I was.." He let his
sentence
end in silence.
"He was worried!" another spoke up laughing and nudged Andrew who felt
his
face growing warm.
Miaren watched the 4 men standing in front of her. Two looked
similar, and
the laughing one, she remembered him from surgery the other day with
the
injured one.
"Ya be Jack." She replied louder than she meant to. He beamed and
nudged
his buddy again. "See, she remembers me." He winked at her and pushed
past
her to see the damage.
He stopped just inside the room. "You called US for this?" he
retorted
turning to face her. "YOU called for clean up for Lizard Poop!"
"Aye I did." She replied sternly and matter or fact. "This entire
room was
compromised by creatures that were not quarantined, and not tested to
make
sure they did not carry any bacteria or contaminates with them, or
their
droppings." She added as she saw him step in a soft mushy greenish
pile of
ooze.
Andrew and another who looked a lot like him laughed and nudged the
other
quiet man behind them.
"Have NO worries Doctor." Andrew spoke up quickly. "Me and the boys
will
get this taken care of immediately, and make sure that it is
sterilized and
ready to go for tomorrow."
Miaren smiled her thanks at his understanding of the situation and
turned to
gather the specimens she collected so she could leave them to their
job.
"I shall add your quick response to my request in my report." She
added with
a slight glare to Jack and left. She heard some chortling as she
walked
down the hall to her office.
"Ok boys, let get this done." Andrew said and soon they were busily
cleaning
and sanitizing and making sure everything was sterile and ready for
use for
a new patient.
They happy chatted, joked and jested with each other and Andrew was
glad the
young doctor was not in hearing range. He did not want to make a bad
impression on her, and he could sense her reluctance and her wariness,
and
he just had to bide his time and just always be there to help and soon
she
would relax enough to let her guard down.
Meanwhile Miaren went to her office and began to fill out the numerous
reports necessary for this little incident. She filled out the
reports in
opposite of how they occurred and happened. She left the last one so
she
could use the conclusions of her testing to be included in her reports
and
her recommendations.
Her pager went off, and she went to the lab to check on the findings.
They
appeared to be within healthy limits, from what she could glean from
the
files and other tests the other medical person wrote down.
She did notice a few things that appeared to be some form of parasite,
and
not knowing enough to whether this was normal or not, she marked them,
and
set them aside, to figure out who to send them too. She went down the
list
and marked everything she could, her feelings and her recommendations
to
what should be done with them.
Once she had completed her tests and examined the whole of it, she
then
wrote up her last report, which was to the Captain.
She carefully noted all facts and gave both sides credence as best she
could. She was not foolish to realize that he would side with his
first
officer.
She found a few used StarFleet rules, regulations, mainly in the
health
section and sited them as well. She went over the report and made
sure it
was simple concise and every part of her behavior, her reaction was
also
backed with a matching ruling of such.
She then added a personal note to explain she was not trying to be
difficult, but she was not capable, not did she feel it was right to
ask her
to care for exotics. She was not trained, and it could not only
compromise
the creatures health and well being, it was a costly clean up needed
to
prevent the spread of unknown bacteria that both sets of patients
could pick
up from each other.
She added that her recommendation that perhaps the First Officer
should find
a more suitable home for them, or perhaps they could request a
veterinary to
join the team so everyone would be happier.
She also gently reminded him against the keeping of such "pets" in the
StarFleet Regulations.
Feeling that everything was now in order. Miaren submitted her
reports to
the Captain, a copy of the medical findings for the First Officer and
filed
hers. She then put the strange specimens in cold storage until she
could
find the one she needed to send it to.
[TAG- Josh, just what does dear Captain Avi feel about this detailed
report?
TREE- so what does Montana feel about her report?]
With everything done, she then hurried to her quarters to begin the
search
she had promised Istria. She was also curious if her father had
returned a
response to her inquires.
She relaxed as soon as the door to her quarters shut behind her. She
went
to make some tea and find a few nibbles to keep her going. It was
going to
be a long night, but she was up to the intrigue and she looked forward
to
finding something that would help the Lt.
[SUMMARY]
Miaren left with the destroyed room calls for clean up and to have it
sanitized and made ready for the next day. Andrew and his group show
up and
after a rough start of just what she deemed as hazardous she leaves
and they
clean things up.
Miaren went to her office, wrote up her reports including StarFleet
regulations, codes and the test results and why she recommended what
she
did. She submits them and returns to her quarters to finish up what
she had
promised Istria.

Subject: USS Capricorn: We've arrived...
Avi sat at the desk in his quarters silently, his thoughts a million
miles
away. His mind was racing. It was an anniversary of sorts,
unfortunately
not the kind you want. It was the anniversary of the day he found out
that
his sisters had been killed. Heıd been thinking about them less and
less of
late, once a week or whenever he passed their photos on the shelf.
What he
was looking at now was from when heıd graduated medical school nearly
10
years ago. Normally he only looked at these photos nostalgically on
his
rapidly-approaching birthday. This year, his 30th, it also would have
been
their 25th birthdays. Not that that mattered much any longer.
The door chimed, as he closed the image viewer. ³Come.² He beckoned.
³ıTis me, Captain.² Avi smiled as he heard the doctor respond, yet
not open
the door.
³Dr., you can come in.²
³Sir, I wanted to give you a moment, in case you needed it.²
³Thank you for your concern and respect, but I am decent.²
³Yes, sir. Iım coming in now.²
³Iıll alert the media.² Avi said under his breath.
³Excuse me, sir?² She asked as he waved her off. Handing him a new
PADD,
she started, ³here is the final list of officers who have not come for
their
physicals.²
³Great.² Avi said dryly.
³Sir, if you donıt mind me asking, are you alright?² She asked, after
pausing for a moment of him not looking at the list she gave him.
³Yes, Iım fine, Dr.² Avi said, standing up. He could see the doctor
cringe
for a slight moment, nearly imperceptible to the eye. Once she saw he
was
fully clothed, however, she relaxed ever so slightly. ³Iıd recommend
you
prepare a potential away team. When commander Phillips goes down to
the
planet, she may need at least one medical officer.²
³Of course, sir.²
³Good.²
³Thank you, sir.² she said, leaving his room. Clearly, it was time
for him
to get moving.

Later:
Avi walked onto the bridge. Montana rose from his seat, while he
smiled as
she did. On one side, he wanted to tell the pilot to come to a full
stop so
he could have one more day just the two of them alone. Sadly, sheıd
have no
idea what had come over him, thus he went with the other side...
³Where are we?² Avi asked as he got close.
³About 15 minutes out. Its going to be close to dusk when we arrive,
according to our estimates.²
³Any word on the distress beacon?²
³Nothing yet. Its still going off, as far as we can tell.²
³Hmm...okay. Youıll take an away team down, as soon as itıs safe. We
donıt
know what weıll find, so take the doctor, Aıkora, and Ury.²
³Yes sir,² Montana said before asking, ³weapons?²
³Hand phasers. Nothing else. First contact standards.²
³Good,² she said standing up. ³Weıll check in as soon as weıre down.²
³Be careful.² he cautioned.
³Yes, sir,² she said with a twinkle in her beautiful green eyes.
³Lt.,
youıre with me.²
Avi sat watching the viewscreen. ³Lt. Talara, I want anything you can
find
on this planet. I donıt like the idea that we can only work at
night.²
³Yes, sir.²
³Also, its been a few years, letıs see what else this system has to
offer.
Resources, food, minerals, etc.²
³Yes, sir.²
³Transporter Chief,² Avi then asked tapping his badge.
<Hodges here, sir.>
³Please keep a lock on them. I want to be able to pull them back at a
momentıs notice.²
<Yes, Captain.>
³Thank you, chief.² Avi got up and started pacing. He hated the
starts of
missions when he had nothing to do.
<Commander Phillips to the Capricorn>
³Reckage here. Are you there?²
<Yes, sir. Weıre outside a lost shuttle craft. It has very little
power
flowing through it. It is the distress beacon, however, that we are
detecting.>
³Is there any sign of who set it off? Maybe a crew?²
<No sir. We will keep looking, however.>
³Keep your comm line open.²
<Yes, sir...Aıkora here, sir. The craft does not appear to be
damaged,
except for that which was caused from the crash.>
³Any survivors?²
<This is Lt. Rogan, there are no bodies in here, sir, but there are
footprints around the craft.>
³Secure the area, and we will send more people down to work with you.²
<Aye sir.> Montanaıs disembodied voice said. Avi turned around to
look at
the science station. Istria wasnıt looking directly at him, nor were
her
fingers moving either. She was obviously listening to what was going
on.
*****
Shortly before then...
Marquis left the castle where he and his people were living followed
by 4 or
5 others. They were one step below his inner circle. He had enormous
affection for every one of his people. While they didnıt always agree
with
him, he could feel their strength, their love.
He had only lacked their support once, and even then, it came back
quickly.
Unlike some leaders, he was able to admit his own limitations. That
was
what true leaders did. So, when they said that someone had come to
the
planet, he dove for the stairs to leave the safeguards of their home.
He
wasnıt going to waste even one more second. He owed them that much.
They walked towards the landing area. They had been able to walk
virtually
without being heard for the better part of the 1/4 mile trip. As they
approached they could hear the report that was being given. The
visitors
had found their tracks and the craft. Heıd activated the beacon in
the
hopes that it would bring people. He needed off this rock. His
people
needed new sources of food. New ways to live. They had lived here
too
long. It was time to move on. For those who chose to follow him, he
would
show them paradise. For those who didnıt, that was their option.
Just as
it had been ³hers² all those years ago.
<Secure the area, and we will send more people down to work with you.>
Marquis heard through the bushes. OGood, they were going to send more
people down.ı They would wait for those to arrive, and then they
would
announce themselves.
He sent the others back a few feet, so he would have the chance to
contemplate his wording. These were clearly foreigners. It had been
sometime since heıd seen other people who looked as they did. The
tall male
with red hair was not the leader. He appeared to be in charge of
looking at
things on the ground. The tall darker skinned female was clearly in
charge
of the vessel. The others didnıt seem to have specific roles. He
watched
as they all walked around, talking, conferring, and then going back
about
their business.
After a few minutes, others appeared from around the other side of the
ship.
It did not concern him that there were more of them, just so long as
they
didnıt know he was there. Talking, they began to set up tall lights
that
the new ones had brought. That was fine, there was plenty of time
before
sun up, and his daily hell began. After a moment of them setting down
to
work, Marquis decided it was time. Time for him to make his entrance.
Standing up, he adjusted his coat and walked between the trees, barely
moving the leaves. He stood at the edge of the treeline.
³Hello, and welcome to my planet. My name is Marquis. Please allow
me to
be your host for while you are here.² He said, allowing what heıd said
to
sink in. He would seem gracious, especially since he would probably
be the
last face they would ever see.
