Day 99
Sharees had been ready to smack him, but Lexi's wide, innocent grin
totally unnerved her. "Oh, damn, Lexi, you big dope! Akety's dragon
wasn't flying!"
Sharees stared at the shaken girl and saw the confused twin faced
beyond
her. She nodded to the boys, Alton and Alden and asked them to see
Akety safely home.
"I'll take care of this one," Sharees muttered nodding her head toward
Lexi who was only now trying blurrily to sit up from where she'd
thrown
him to the ground after kissing Akety. "Go on home, Akety. I promise
I
won't kill him, though come morning, with the headache he's going to
have, he might wish otherwise." Sharees smiled ruefully.
Akety sighed and nodded, "I was only trying to help."
"I'm sure he appreciates your friend****p, and probably will even more
tomorrow," Sharees smiled and she watched the two searchlings and
younger rider go off on their way.
Turning back, she saw Lexi heave himself up and stand there swaying
slightly. He leered down at the small, ebony haired woman, "So,
whatcha
doin' shweetheart?"
"I was heading into the Lusty Dutchess for a drink, but..."
She got no further when his long arm s****d around her grabbing her by
the butt and pulling her against him. Leering down at her he grinned
rakishly "Great idea! Gorgeous. Let's me an' you go have a drink.
Unless
you got something else in mind."
"Lexi, I think you've had enough..." She couldn't fight the man's
strength, even if he were drunk, but pressed against him as it were,
she
could tell exactly what the something else might be that he had in
mind,
and not wanting to indulge him, she answered, "Sure... a drink!
What's
one more drink, eh?" She figured she'd let him pass out and let the
tavern keeper worry about him in the morning.
With a lusty chuckle he whisked her back inside yelling to the barkeep
for a round as he returned to his favorite table. The tavern wench
grinned when she saw the big man enter but her smile drooped at the
sight of the woman on his arm. But no matter, one was not much
different
then the other, besides it was well known the leathercrafter had
designs
elsewhere.
The table had been cleared of the stack of tankards that Lexi had
emptied earlier, but a fresh full one appeared immediately in front of
him, and the serving wench leaned across him to plunk down another in
front of Sharees, slopping it almost into the rider's lap. Sharees
glared at her, especially when she saw Lexi's glazed eyes fastened to
the voluptuous bosom. Sharees was a bit more formidable than the
other
mousy girl that Lexi had with him before, and the wench backed off.
Lexi gave the wench a lopsided grin, his eyes riveted to the ample
mounds that filled his line of vision. Licking his lips he made a
crude
smacking sound before grabbing the full tankard. Slapping Leela on the
backside brought a playful squeal from the woman as she walked away.
The blacksmith laughed and raised his glass to the room. "Here's to
the
winner!" His voice boomed over the usual din of the tavern. Loud
guffaws
and whistles sounded as the men in the room joined in.
Sharees chuckled and tipped her own glass to the toast, taking a long
swallow. Her anger at Lexi's crude display was barely held in check as
she rejoined with, "Yeah, he is most definitely worthy and could ride
my
dragon anytime!"
The blacksmith choked on his ale at Sharees's comment which,
unfortunately, caught the attention of the entire room. The couple had
been the center of much entertaining gossip for the last several
months
and seeing them together had everyone suddenly speculating.
Looking at the dark haired woman over the rim of his mug and seeing
the
smug smile on her face brought a spark of anger. Lexi's empty tankard
hit the table the roguish smile on his face not meeting his eyes.
"Really darlin' I thought you saved that privilege for my friends. Or
are you branching out now!"
The curvy brunette appeared at his shoulder with a fresh ale for Lexi
and hearing the angry exchange her eyes glittered with gleeful
satisfaction. Yes, there was hope for this night yet. Leaning closely
Leela fairly purred in Lexi's ear bru****ng her breasts against his
shoulder as she gracefully set the full brew in front of him. Not one
to
ignore the invitation the blacksmith's hand slid sensuously up her leg
then across her backside before giving her waist a squeeze. "Anytime
handsome," the barwench answered moving to give the blacksmith another
view of her feminine assets. With a catty grin at Sharees she
retreated
to the bar her backside swaying seductively.
Sharees straightened her shoulders, which pulled her blouse tightly
across her chest, and definitely caught Lexi's attention and just
smiled
at him; her blue eyes opened wide in mock innocence. "Whatever do you
mean? Weren't you just praising the winner of the mating flight?
Chamelle thought he was quite a splendid male and at least his rider
wasn't so drunk that his dragon was flying cock-eyed."
Lexi's eyes dropped to her chest his sharp intake of breath was barely
audible over the noise of the rowdy customers, some of whom had also
suddenly taken an interest in Sharees's luscious breasts. "Very
funny!"
He answered sharply his tankard hitting the table slopping out most of
the amber liquid.
Sharees's smile widened, knowing she'd hit her mark. Samson would
surely remind Lexi how his intoxicated state had cost him a
pleasurable
evening. "Oh, don't tell me that you were in such a condition? Poor
Samson." She sighed dramatically, heaving her breast as she did so,
and
then leaning in toward Lexi as if to console him. "I'm sure he tried
his best."
The lust of the chase had disappeared and even though her nearness
wrecked havoc with his senses Lexi suddenly felt quite clear headed
despite the amount of alcohol he'd consumed but that could be due to
his
rising anger. He wanted her desperately but he also wanted to hurt
her,
the way she'd hurt him! "Don't be a ***** Sharees it doesn't become
you!"
She laughed, but it wasn't the pretty laughter that he had often heard
from her in the past. This laugh was hard and had little to do with
humor. "Really, Lexi? I didn't think you cared."
The huge fist hit the table with a resounding crack making Sharees
jump.
"Woman, I'm sick and tired of you treating me like your lapdog!" The
azure eyes glittered dangerously, "I don't know what ever gave you the
idea I didn't! But you've made it very clear where I stand!"
"Me? You seem to forget yourself! It wasn't me who thrust a blanket
between us when I came to your bed!" She snapped, her rage and
frustration making her forget just where she was and who was
listening.
Lexi's head snapped back as if she'd slapped him, "Why did you come
Sharees, other then to tease! I told you I want my women to come
willing....." his gaze drifted to Leela who along with others watched
the exchange with keen interest. "not cringing at my touch! BRING ME
ANOTHER DRINK!" Lexi bellowed angrily. "But it's pretty obvious you
weren't cringing when you willingly dragged Jason to your bed!"
Sharees glared at the serving wench who had started to move toward
them,
but cringed back when she met the look in the leathercrafter's eyes.
Sharees turned that steely gaze on Lexi and he found himself shrinking
back despite his much larger size. "How... dare... you! When I was
going through hell, and needed you... you stayed away! And that whole
time, you couldn't keep your hands off of other women! You think I
didn't see you? I came to you to show you that I was still committed
to
US, to our relation****p! You... you thrust me away. You didn't show
me
the kindest bit of understanding after what I had been through! I
came
to YOU which is a hell of a lot more than you ever did for me! You
want
willing bed warmers? Fine! But where will they be in the morning? I
saved your ass when the Wyverns would have had it for lunch. I was
there
for YOU Lexi. I have always been here for you."
The room fell silent at the look on the big man's face before he
erupted
from his chair. "STAYED AWAY! WHERE THE HELL DID YOU GET THAT DUMB
IDEA!? AND DON'T FORGET WHO WAS SAVING WHOS PRETTY BUTT OUT AT THE
FARM!" Oblivious to everything around him but the startled sapphire
eyes
Lexi took a deep breath his massive chest heaving from anger. Managing
to calm himself a little he continued, "As for the other women
darling,
I know when they tremble it's because they are enjoying it not because
they're scared of me. Face it Sharees you came to service your little
pet to keep him happy not because you wanted to be there and we both
know it!" Spinning to leave the big man almost fell down as he
half-staggered to the door.
Sharees threw the half-full tankard after him. The tankard hit the
wall
next to the door spraying him with ale. Lexi glared over his shoulder
at the beautiful leathercrafter, "Now you're being a *****!"
Yanking the door almost off it's hinges the blacksmith disappeared
from
the room as a subtle wave of relief rolled through the customers. The
cool blast of night air brought a wave of nausea but Lexi fought it
down
feeling his anger slowly wane. "Damned woman! Who does she think she
is!" He muttered under his breath the alcohol affecting his walking
now
that he was calming down.
"Don't you dare walk away from me Lexi Kaltos!" Sharees commanded
appearing in front of him. For a second he saw two of her before they
faded together.
"When are you going to start acting like a man instead of a hurt
little
boy? You've done nothing but pout since Osran! When are you going to
get
over it? I have!"
Lexi looked down into the angry sapphire eyes. Running his fingers
through his shoulder length hair he sighed, "No Sharees I don't think
you are! You accused me of that before but that has never been an
issue
with me. I know you did what you had to do to survive and I never once
thought you went willingly. Not once! It was sheer torture not knowing
where you were and not being able to protect you! Honey, Osran's not
the
problem. But your and everyone else's lack of faith in me is."
Pressing
his lips tightly together Lexi sadly turned away stumbling over some
loose clods of dirt. "****!" He exclaimed almost falling.
Sharees instinctively reached a hand out to steady the big man, but
then
quickly pulled it back as he spun toward her, swaying. "What are you
talking about, Lexi? I never lost faith in you! I kept believing you
would come to rescue me... it was all that kept me going sometimes.
Who
told you they'd lost their faith in you? I never did, Lexi! But...
you
never came to talk to me, after... after I got back! Why didn't you
come? Why is it every time I saw you, some wench was sitting on your
lap? Then you'd look at me like... like a little boy looks at a toy
that's been broken and could never be fixed!"
He was just inebriated enough that he no longer cared, plus the
churning
in his stomach wasn't helping his mood either. "I stayed away because
I
was told to Sharees! 'Give her time Lexi! Let her heal Lexi!!'" He
quipped in a snotty tone. "Yeah right! So much for being the good guy!
Ask your friends Sharees! ASK ANYBODY!" He yelled loudly. "And as for
losing faith, you couldn't wait to jump to Jason the first chance you
go........" Lexi burped and his face turned a decidedly shade of
green.
Waving his arm wildly, "Aw piss on it. Go away and let me enjoy my
drunk!" Staggering away he stepped in a hole and fell face first into
the ground with a loud whump. The dampness of the grass was the last
thing he remembered before everything went black.

Subject: [DL-N] Getting it together
Day 5 Early Morning
After leaving the Med Center Breezy was waylaid by some of the local
vendors on various problems and after settling a few minor disputes,
then okaying various projects she was headed towards the office when
Coo broke into her thoughts, "Pearl's rider wants you to come."
[..] Several minutes later
Breezy stood with the trainees and a few others that had gathered and
watched solemnly as a skeleton was unearthed. She listened to Jale's
*****sment and sighed inwardly. This was the last thing they needed
especially with Fairlight's Mayor and a Judge in the warren.
Thankfully Dev had been keeping them busy for her while Jeneve
recuperated. The Wingleader had been adamant about the Warrenlady
being present for any proceedings regarding Ranker, which had
thankfully given her more time to hopefully get things together. While
Cat snooped around for Galen and M'lent or at least that's what they
thought she was doing, even though Breezy was sure the Rat Catcher had
her own agenda in that matter, Selena had taken over the investigation
completely. Stretch wasn't too happy about it as her dislike of Ranker
was barely veiled, but Breezy could count the Homeguard Captain to do
her job fairly or at least she hoped she could. Ranker had definitely
stirred things up since his arrival.
***
"Firstly the body is a female, secondly not sure how she died but it
would have happened before the snow because it is all bone and if it
had died after the cold would have preserved much of the body."
***
As the furor died down Breezy faded away with the others sending a
message through the dragons for Jale to re****t his finds as soon as he
had completely *****sed the situation.
If the situation hadn't been so grim Breezy might have smiled at the
warm affection pass between the Huntress and the Healer as he'd
examined the bones. Love was in the air but then it was that time of
year and it was showing up all over the warren now that the snow was
gone. Spring had a way of affecting people that way, especially after
such a long hard winter and she didn't doubt that before long Jale
would have his hands full with 'blossoming' females that would soon be
adding to the warren population.
Noticing the girl that had been brought in from the village standing
in the back of the group Breezy stopped and wiggled her finger at her
and the young woman approached.
Hesitantly Cherry glanced at the med-center when she said,. "I hope I
haven't done anything wrong?"
"No, not at all. I'm Breezy, Senior Wingleader here and I'm to
understand your name is Cherry I think Freya told me?"
The brunette nodded but before she could say anything Breezy added,
"I'm a little surprised to see you up and about so soon though? When I
was in the Med center earlier I was told you and your sister were
resting?" Arching a brow a hint of a smile came to the small woman's
face. "If you're feeling up to why don't you come by my office in an
hour. We can talk and maybe you can shed a little more light on what
happened yesterday." Noticing the gardner watching them Breezy's smile
widened, "I think Dargis is waiting for you, I'll see you later."
{Tag: Bianca - wasn't horning in on your tag Chris just trying to get
to Cherry, so go for it}
Walking away the little redhead's mind instantly went to her mental
list but an overwhelming wave of sadness intruded. *Coo?*
[Sister, I'm worried about Malani. Her little ones are so ill and
my..]
*Don't even think it!*
Suddenly Breezy stopped and looked towards the cliffs and she couldn't
stop the small gasp that escaped. The dragons were hovering on their
ledges their gazes riveted to the entrance to the hatching cavern. It
was a strange vigil to be sure, a death watch by human standards.
Letting out a small sigh she continued towards her office. How many
more clutchlings would die before they had a chance to live? Then a
thought struck her, was Jeneve's melancholy tied in with Malani's so
much that the Warrenlady was making herself ill? Losing her own baby
was devastating enough, but to have it compounded by her dragon's
grief...
Day 5 Evening
<Snip>
"Breezy, please, you got to excuse me from outside work. At least
during the day. I would be more then willing to work at night."
<End Snip>
"Wood you really have to get through what ever is bothering you! I
know you are a night person and that's no but deal and I'm sure you
have your reasons for slinking about in the dark like you do. But you
will be standing on the sands when the time comes and that means you
must train with the other searchlings. It wouldn't look right if you
didn't for one and it simply wouldn't be fair to ask someone to take
special time/ Besides, with Galen laid up we are down a trainer at the
moment,." The little redhead answered sweetly.
The young man sighed and bowed his head. "I was really hoping that.."
{Tag: Jim - she'll stick to her guns on him training with the others}
[..] a few minutes later
Watching the door close behind the Fletcher Breezy's lips pursed into
a frown. Wood's visit was a strange coincidence as shortly before his
arrival she had been leafing through some old papers and had come
across the last testament left by Wood's father. She was glad that the
young man had returned to the Warren, but sadly to late. It had been a
terrible blow for him to find his parents gone. They had been some of
the first ones to suc***b to the poison that had almost destroyed the
warren and with their son's whereabouts unknown at the time she and
Jeneve had no choice but to open the shop up for auction. Thankfully
Conard, or Wood as he was now known returned in time to reclaim it
before it was lost to him forever. Vendor space was at a premium
especially those with living quarters attached and if one became
available the Hawkers circled immediately.
He had returned in secrecy shortly before the winter set in
introducing himself and explaining to Jeneve his situation and she
with Breezy's hesitant approval had helped the bowman create a new
life. Of course Wood didn't know that Breezy knew his secret, but then
that was her job to know. Well at least as much as humanely possible.
It definitely helped dealing with situations when they arose and
hoping they didn't come around to kick her in the butt at the worst
possible moment.
Sliding the papers in the pile to be filed away the little redhead
took a sip of cold coffee and grimaced at the bitterness. It was best
to let sleeping dogs lie for know and leave Woodlenn to his secrets.
Actually, when he'd first arrived Jeneve had privately sought her
counsel on the matter and the only reason Breezy had approved because
after some discreet inquiries Wick had vouched for the young man
without even realizing it. Even though the Candlemaker was a
cantankerous old coot she trusted his judgment implicitly, of course
the fact that Wick had been around the warren longer then anybody she
knew of also helped.
Breezy liked Wood, he was always polite, very personable, a gifted
craftsman and quite the flirt when he wanted to be. He was handsome by
any standard but whatever demons drove him to hide like he did was his
own business.
{NRPG: Carina and Jim hope this ties it together okay}
Day 6 Noonish
With sandwich in hand Breezy headed back to her office and was almost
tackled by a cloud of black. The coaltender's engaging smile was the
only thing that belied there was even a human under all the coal dust.
The redhead couldn't help but laugh, "And just what are you up to
M'rel?"
The young man fell into step with the little Wingleader and he kept
glancing at her slyly as they strolled along until Breezy finally
stopped and gazed at him quizzically.
Hiss grin broadened, "I was hoping there was a chance that you might
take the time to introduce me to your gorgeous friend?"
A blank expression filled her face for a moment then her lips spread
into a huge grin and she batted her eyes innocently, "And just what
friend would that be? I have so many gorgeous friends of course!"
Clicking his tongue at her the coal tender chuckled, "Why that
absolutely da****ng Lord of course!"
Breezy eyed the man from head to toe until he grew uncomfortable under
her scrutiny. She was obviously enjoying the game and pressed her lips
together to hold back a grin, "I do believe that coal dust is not the
normal manner of dress when being presented to royalty."
M'rel snorted in a foppish manner, "Woman, what are you thinking? Of
course I would wash first!"
Breezy couldn't help but laugh and started to clap him on the shoulder
but quickly pulled her hand back before touching the dusty worker.
"Uncle is preparing a mourning feast tonight for after the funeral
I'll introduce you then, ok?"
He looked like he was about to hug her and the little redhead quickly
sidestepped the man waggling a finger at him. "Ah-ah don't dare you
touch me, at least until you're clean."
Giving her a huge grin and a thumbs up M'rel happily trotted off.
Day 6 Early Evening.
Amazingly everything was going smoothly and the funeral began on time
and according to plan, which was a pleasant surprise for the tired
redhead who felt like she'd been running around like a chicken with
its head cut off trying to get everything ready. There were some
whispers about the fact that the innocent and the damned would be up
there together. Somehow it seemed fitting though with T'rell between
the two as the bridge between the past and the future. The soldier was
a good man. He'd fought his demons and won and died bravely, as it
should be. Breezy felt Cyrus was still one of their own no matter what
people said and despite his failings which possibly caused the death
of Jeneve's baby. Shaking that awful thought from her mind she fell
back on that old adage. "What will be, will be!"
The pyre was situated on a large outcropping about half way up the
cliff, the men had created three wooden altars that were adorned them
with an attractive array of wildflowers that Dargis had provided.
Mostly white they glowed softly in the lengthening shadows of the
coming night.
The dragons were colorful sentinels as they lined the crater rim
thoughtfully watching the proceedings below. The scaly behemoths had
taken care of the gentle Ahzdeen in their own way. Coo had said how
and she hadn't asked, not sure if she really wanted to know. Some
questions were best left unanswered. All the humans knew was that his
large body was gone come the following morning.
Solemly and with her back ramrod straight she walked alongside K'tarr
as they made there way through the crowd and the riders lined up in
formation. Stopping near a small podium that had been erected the two
Wingleaders waited.
Earlier the bodies had been prepared and Breezy had supervised them
being placed on the special litters that were placed on the waiting
wagons. The litters had been fa****oned in such a way that one dragon
would lift it from the wagon and make a short fly over the warren
before setting it down on the wooden pyre above.
Her eyes roamed over the crowd and in the distance she could see Galen
sitting on one of the benches, next to him stood M'lent. A little stab
of concern filled the woman at the lack of Nash's wheeled chair as
Galen had promised. But the trainer was as stubborn as she was on some
things and mothering him was the last thing he needed right now. His
closed expression tore at her heart. The guilt he felt was already
showing up in his pensive mood and she wasn't sure how to help him
through this. Even though he was feeling better thanks to Jale's
powerful pain killers and his wounds healing, the inner pain would
take much longer to heal and no amount of Jale's potions could fix
that. Galen needed her strength now more then ever.
Then the faint notes from a flute started drifting across the warren
with a haunting sound. It's song one of sadness and loss yet...
Breezy recognized the tune immediately as a very old sonnet and
wondered how many in the crowd knew or understood the words. She loved
the melody, her eyes drifting upward to the sky. The last bit of blue
sky was fast disappearing into the purplish color of night and stars
began to twinkle more brightly. The moon had risen enough that the
pale I was a sone of pain, fear, life and freedom and she found
herself mouthing the words to herself.
Night-time sharpens,
heightens each sensation
Darkness stirs and wakes imagination
Silently the senses abandon their defences ...
Slowly, gently night unfurls its splendour
Grasp it, sense it - tremulous and tender
Turn your face away
from the garish light of day,
turn your thoughts away
from cold, unfeeling light -
and listen to the music of the night ...
Close your eyes and surrender to your
darkest dreams!
Purge your thoughts of the life
you knew before!
Close your eyes,
let your spirit start to soar!
And you'll live
as you've never lived before ..
As the music faded away the only sound that could be here was the
light wind whistling through the cliffs. Several minutes ticked by as
the group waited for the signal to start. If Jeneve didn't appear soon
they would have to begin without her. Glancing up at the taller
redhead the little Wingleader let out a small sigh and the air itself
seemed to hold its breath as if waiting.
