[DL-N] Last Things!

by treedr@[EMAIL PROTECTED] Dec 20, 2004 at 09:02 AM

Day 6 Evening

After finishing the final farewell to his fallen friend Breezy held her
breath as she watched Galen slowly leave the small. The gray pallor on
his face was plainly evident and she tried hard not to let it show how
much it concerned her. Vasklar was right he didn't need to be
mothered and deep down she understand his need to do this, despite the
painful effort it was causing him. If the situation were reversed wild
dragons couldn't have kept her away either. The whoosh of the pyre
being lit caught her attention, a small frown marred her face as she
watched the orange flames dance skyward. There had been too much death
to much suffering, would it never cease. After a moment her gaze moved
back to the man that had become her best friend, her lover, and even
her mentor on some things. Without realizing it, Galen had become her
anchor, the center of her crazed world. It was a new concept for her to
be sure, she'd had a few serious relationships before but the trainer
made her feel safe, protected and..........

[Loved.] came Coo's soft whisper.

*Yes and even that.* Breezy answered pensively feeling an embracing
warmth flowing through the tight bond she and the sea-green dragon
shared. In the dying light the stars began to appear twinkling randomly
against the purplish sky of the coming night. The smell of smoke filled
the air and burning embers floated lazily about, glowing brightly then
turning to ash as they fell to the ground. For Breezy they represented
the final breath of life of those that had been lost. Norwall had been
good to her, yet so terribly bad, but it had become her home in a way
she'd never had before. Her loyalty to this place and it's people
was complete, if the DragonLady were to call her away now Breezy
wasn't sure if she would be able to go.

Feeling someone's gaze she turned to find that M'lent had appeared
next to Galen and the retired Searcher was watching her intently.
Seeing her questioning stare he nodded encouragingly before turning
back to the fire the sadness he felt reflected in his eyes.

She looked at them standing side by side doing there best to keep up a
brave front. As seasoned soldiers of fortune the trio had become
extremely good friends and created their own little niche. It was not
often that you found one without at least one of the others nearby.
M'lent and Galen would never be the same, and T'rell would be
missed far more then many realized. It wasn't supposed to be like
this and the ramifications of that night would be with them for a long
time to come, of that she was sure. Guilt was a terrible thing and it
had a way of eating at the soul in ways other emotions couldn't.
Folding her arms in defeat the little wingleader sighed inwardly.

As the flames rose higher the haunting refrain of the flute began again
and Breezy's lips moved silently with the verses floating in her
head. Glancing over at the trainer her gaze grew warm and filled with
compassion but Galen did not see as his head was bent. She could see
the hard twitch in his jaw, the pained expression of sorrow and her
heart ached for him with each passing moment. The blue eyes turned away
to scan the crowd coming to rest on the tall willowy blonde who wore
much the same expression.

And Jeneve, Breezy had no idea how to help the young woman through this
time. The Warrenlady was so riddled with guilt talking to her was
almost impossible. But it was a odd detached kind of guilt that the
Wingleader couldn't quite put her finger on.. She had the strangest
feeling that losing the baby had affected her far more then it had the
mother. Jeneve almost seemed embarrassed to talk about the infant
almost as if it didn't really exist for her. The death of Cyrus had
only compounded Jeneve's withdrawal into herself. One thing Breezy
knew for sure was that her young charge needed to face her feelings and
move on, or she would never truly heal.

>From across the spanse hazel eyes met hers and Breezy suddenly realized
that Dev was trying to catch her eye. Just then Coo's voice popped
into her head. "Deeva's rider says not to worry, he will look after
Malani's rider, that you must see to your mate!]

Thoughtfully, the redhead nodded to the tall queenrider, *Tell him
thank you!* Turning back to Galen she noted the faint tremble in his
hands. *Sister, tell Pearl to let his rider know that I will be taking
Galen home with me tonight! I'll make sure that he comes to the
Med-Center tomorrow.*

Seeing Jale's nod in her direction Breezy walked slowly over to the
two men.

[..] Later in the Dining Hall

"Jeneve, are you sure you feel up to this?" Devereaux asked
compassionately of the tall queenrider, guiding her to the table
reserved for the warrenlady. "I'm sure your people will understand if
you wish to return to your apartment.

He had to give the beautiful blonde credit, the loss of a child was a
terrible thing but to have it compounded by such a terrible tragedy, he
didn't know if he could've shown the kind of elegant courage Jeneve
was showing right now.

Deliliah sighed and looked Amy in the eye." Amy I know I don't have the
best reputation around here. And I've been knowen to breakup a few
homes at one time or an other. But you found a truly wonderful man. A
man who truly loves you more than anything. You've got lots of people
that care for you. Your even a mother." Deliliah looked down at David
and gentaly ran her fingers over his head again," You've found your
happiness. I envy you." And as she stated this a tear started to fall
down her cheek.

<End Snip>

Using the damp rag in her hand Delilah covertly wiped her cheek then
began to furiously clean the next table. What the heck was wrong with
her, talking as if love really mattered! How could she even think such
a thing let alone actually admit it! Even though she and Amy had, had
their go rounds about the tall courier, the blonde did not seem to
judge her like so many of the other women did. With a soft smile to the
new mother and a gentle caress to the baby boys cheek, "Take care of
your Momma!" she cooed at David before walking away.

Despite the somberness of the room Delilah could feel the eyes on her
as she walked towards the kitchen. Even now the rumors were still there
when she appeared and she wondered if they would ever truly go away.
The Ratcatcher was the worst of the lot. She would often catch Cat
covertly glaring at her whenever she even got close to Kaymann. Even
Daisy and Erin kept an eye on their new beau's when she was around.
It was almost laughable, like she really wanted to have a man around
her. Maybe her Uncle was right, maybe she did need to talk about it,
get it out of her system. But she doubted anyone could truly understand
and she'd much prefer their loathing looks then looks of pity. It was
too bad that fellow from Daere hadn't hung around longer. For some
reason he seemed to understand.

Something brushed her hand jerking her from her reverie and Delilah
jumped inhaling sharply. Glancing around she looked into the warm eyes
of the Gardener. "Hello Delilah."

Instinctively sucking in her bottom lip a small smile came to her face.
"Dargis.......how are you? Can I get you something?" She asked politely
nodding to the young man and the woman seated at the table with him.

Dargis turned with his usual sweet smile, "Cherry, what would you
like?"

[..] A little later

The door to the kitchen swung shut behind Delilah and she hesitated
when she heard her giving instructions on the dinner tray for the
prisoner. "I'll take it!" She said quickly stepping forward.

Jeryn eyed his niece thoughtfully, "I don't like you going there.
That Ranker fellow is not ......"

"Don't worry Uncle, the guards will be there." The dark-haired woman
answered with a look that brooked no argument.

The Head Cook sighed rubbing his chin thoughtfully. He didn't know
what to think about Delilah, the change in his niece since her return
was a drastic one and he was still not sure how to deal with it, let
alone his own fears concerning the situation. He'd thought he'd
lost her, then to have her return a broken shell of her former self
worried him to know end. What he would give to see her spirit return,
her gay laughter, the snapping fire in her brilliant emerald eyes when
she was up to some mischief. Anything to bring her back as she was
before. But all that was gone now and as much as he wanted it to be
right he doubted their relationship would ever be the same again.

[..] Mid Evening

Delilah silently entered the jail and the leering look she received
from the head guard on duty had her frowning at the man. "I have
Ranker's meal! Is there a problem?"

"Not at all." He answered in a suggestive sneer and moved towards the
dark corridor that lead back through the cells..

The green eyes turned to ice and Delilah finger's itched to reach out
and rake the disgusting look from his face. Digging her nails into the
bottom of the tray to keep control she followed the guard quietly,
avoiding his backward glances.

Entering the small alcove outside the cell the man snorted at the
prisoner laying sprawled on the cot, "Get up! You're in luck Ranker,
they decided to feed you again!"

Delilah placed the tray as she had before then moved to sit in the
chair.

"You don't have to wait in here Lady, you can always keep us company
up front!" The guard grinned moving to take her arm.

"No......thank you! I'll remain here!" The flash of anger in her eyes
made the man step back. Glaring at her for a moment he shrugged. "Suit
yourself!" Ignoring his Captain's orders the guard disappeared
leaving the woman and the prisoner alone.

{Tag: Jim - She's backkkkk! So what they gonna chat about this
time? :D}

[..] Late Evening in Galen's apartment

"Are you sure you don't want to lay down!" Breezy asked as she handed
the trainer a cup of coffee laced with brandy.

"I'm fine." Galen answered quietly staring into the fire.

Stoking the fire the little redhead took her own cup and sat on the
couch leaving a small space between them. Watching the flames made her
think of the funeral and a sad sigh escaped without her realizing it.

The trainer reached over to brush a burnished curl off her shoulder,
"Thanks for busting me out for the night! I think one more night in
there would have made me go stir crazy."

Despite her concern Breezy couldn't help but smile over the rim of
her cup, "We'll talk to Jale tomorrow and see what he says about you
staying out." Curling her foot up beneath her, her toe began to tap
against her leg, a sign that she was nervous, actually worried was more
like it. Galen had insisted that they put in an appearance at the
dining hall and now he was totally exhausted and the trembling in his
hands was even more evident then before. "I think we should call it a
night. You need to rest." she added trying to keep her voice even.

The trainer turned his gaze back to the fire. For several long minutes
they sat each deep in their own thoughts until Galen finally broke the
silence of the room. "I don't think I could sleep." He answered his
voice edged with tortured emotion.

Breezy moved closer and reached out to touch his cheek. "Galen," she
whispered feeling tears pricking at the back of her eyes. "Please
don't do this to yourself."

[..]

Galen was still plainly hurting and knew it was compounded by the grief
he felt. Breezy knew she couldn't take away the pain of losing his
friend but she could ease the pain of his wounds somewhat. While he
readied for the night in the bathroom she turned back the bed covers in
a way to make it as easy for him as possible. Quickly undressing she
slipped into one of his nightshirts then sat on the edge of the bed and
waited.

The redhead didn't see struggle that waged within the man as he
stared at his reflection in the bathroom mirror, nor did she see the
pill he took to help blot out the pain. The glassy look in his eyes as
he eased himself carefully into the bed she attributed to the
exhaustion he felt and nothing more. As Breezy gently curled up next to
him pulling the soft down comforter over them she did her best to
remain positive. It just took time is all, as they said, time heals all
wounds. Galen would heal, and things would be back to normal, it was
just a matter of time. At least she hoped it would be.

Day 7

Early Morning in the Warren Offices

Jack smiled at the little Wingleader and Breezy scowled at the handsome
accountant. 'Don't look so....so chipper!" She snapped over the rim
of the steaming mug of coffee.

"Long night 'eh? You really need to get more sleep Breezy!"

The Sr. Wingleader puffed her lips in irritation, "Yeah well despite
that cute grin of yours you don't really look all that hot yourself!"

"I'm just worried about Jeneve!" He answered quietly laying a large
stack of reports on her desk.

"Good then give her these reports!" the redhead answered with a
chuckled yawn. "It'll make her feel real wanted!"

The accountant chuckled, "Well, I think she is otherwise occupied. Your
queenrider friend is keeping her busy. Brought her breakfast and
everything!"

"Dev!!! Oh yeah, he's such a suck up! But a cute one! Don't ya
think?"" Breezy giggled arching a brow in amusement. "Wow, imagine that
bringing the Warrenlady breakfast! You know Jack you could really learn
something from him!

Jack snorted knowing the full connotations of the man's queenrider
status, "Sorry not my type! And you don't eat breakfast, remember."

Breezy grinned batting her eyelashes in exaggeration, "Can't blame a
girl for trying!" She and Jack had developed a good working
relationship and their lighthearted banter was part of it and always
managed to break the tension of an otherwise dismal day.

"Anyway, just wanted to make sure you knew that Jocko fellow was asking
questions about the things that had already been brought out of the
cave. Wasn't sure what you wanted him to know?"

Breezy leaned back in her chair, folding her arms she scratched her
chin trying unsuccessfully to stifle another yawn. "You can show him
what we have so far, just stay with him and any questions he has, have
him come to me."

{Tag: Carina and Katie - I'll leave this for you to play with
however you want.}

[..] a short while later

"Cherry, once again welcome to Norwall. I'm sorry your arrival had to
be under such circumstances." Breezy said graciously to the young woman
sitting across the desk from her. "I want you to know I am very
concerned about this attack on your village and we will do what we can
to help in anyway we can. I'm hoping you might be able to think of
anything that might give us a clue to help shed some light on this?"

{Tag: Bianca}

After the young woman left Breezy sifted through the reports, the one
from Dargis catching her attention. How is it that someone could have
been buried in the middle of the warren without anyone seeing or
discovering the grave was definitely a mystery. She would have to check
with Jale later and see what progress he'd made if any, on whom it
might be. Checking the old reports from what she could tell no one was
missing or unaccounted for. Sending word to Dargis through Coo, she
asked that if the Gardener discovered anything else like this to please
notify her immediately. Digging up bodies in the middle of the warren
was the last thing they needed. But then it seemed like they had a lot
of those *last things* lately.

{Tag: Eddie - So had Jale found out anything yet?}

[..] Mid Morning

The door to her office burst open and a tiny hurricane named Dizzi blew
into Breezy's office. The little girl climbed up onto the plush chair
in front of the desk and the Wingleader had to lean forward to see her.
Arching a brow at the child. "Is there something I can do for you
Little Miss?"

Crossing her arms Dizzi gazed up at her with a very serious childlike
expression, "Miss Breezy, when are you going to let Mr. Ranker out?
He's not as mean as you think!"

{Tag: Max - Wanna jp a meeting of the minds? :D}

[..] Late Morning

Breezy leaned back in her chair and stretched. It had been a long busy
morning and her lack of sleep was showing. Rubbing her temples she rose
and stretched some more before wandering over to the window. Gazing out
across the green the blue eyes scanned the warren, suddenly a ripple
seemed to run through the dragons lined up in formation then others
began appearing in the air space over the warren and Coo's excited
voice popped into her head. [We've got company! He's coming to see
our eggs I'm sure of it! Real royalty! Deeva can stuff that up her
queenly nose!]]

"*Huh!*" Breezy said and thought in confusion.

[The watch says it's a royal caravan!]

"*WHAT?*" The redhead exclaimed her her eyes squenching in irritation.
It was bad enough they had the Mayor and a Judge roaming around poking
into things and now someone else.

"Oh no!" Damn! In all the excitement she'd forgotten.......

[It's the Duke's hatchling!]

"Lord Tallon!" Breezy whispered under her breath. On man how could she
forget? Clasping her cheeks in her hands the little woman groaned,
"Awww crap! That's just what we need!" The blue eyes widened and the
redhead hesitated, then again, maybe a visit from Tallon might be just
the thing to raise Jeneve's spirits.
