Subject: [USS Capricorn] Things that go bump.......
MD 3:2000
Greenish-yellow eyes glowed in the darkness as they scanned the area
around the shuttlecraft. The black nose sniffed the night air taking in
each distinct scent some bringing memories of a different time and
place. There were more beings in the foliage then those in the uniforms
realized, and they watched the newcomers from the shadowy undergrowth
with expectant anticipation. Even though the perimeter guards seemed to
sense they weren't alone, they could find nothing to substantiate their
feelings. They would discover as others had in the past that their
fancy devices had little use here.
The night was filled with an array of strong scents, apprehension,
curiosity, fear, and even skepticism. Yet the one that was the most
powerful of all, was the raw hunger emanating from 'The One' and his
people. It hung over the area like a heavy shroud.
It surprised her somewhat when the Federations split up, she thought
Red had more brains then that. But then the search team was mostly
human and they were an unpredictable species at best. Perched on her
limb the black cat continued to clean her sleek coat seemly unconcerned
with the goings on below. But in truth she was keenly aware of every
word spoken, every movement, and every subtle nuance.
Finally the feline yawned and stretched, lazily digging her claws into
the thick bark of the branch to test their sharpness. After a moment
she nimbly descended from her lofty perch landing quietly on the forest
floor below. Blending in with the night the guards did not see nor hear
her as she made her way around the area. Sensing the sudden retreat of
the hidden ones the cat sniffed the air, her hackles rising for a brief
moment. There were things that lived on this planet that defied reason
and there were places even the Master and his people feared to tread.
One could never be too cautious. Ever alert the cat trotted along
checking the perimeter then sensing no immediate danger boldly made her
way to the open door of the shuttle.

A'kora told her Chief. "I want the transporter room to keep a positive
lock
on their comm badges at all times. The radiation put out by the local
sun
might only be lethal after threshold accumulation is reached, but I do
not
want to take any chances with personnel caught without cover if dawn
comes
upon them unexpectedly."
"Aye Ma'am. Anything else?"
"No, that will be sufficient. Cheng out."
A'kora let out a short, small, snort of annoyance and turned away from
the
viewport to again monitor the diagnostic program in progress.
<End Snip>
The little black cat comfortably ensconced itself unseen on one of the
chairs towards the back of the shuttle and eyed the woman curiously.
She didn't know this officer; the woman must be new. Had it been that
long? There was something about this being though that fascinated her.
The woman wore the colors of engineering and the gold circles on her
collar denoted her rank. What was it they were called? Pips, that's
right. A rather silly name for a small circular spot, but then the
humans were not known for being overly intelligent on some things, yet
they did come in rather useful at times.
But this one wasn't human, or what she appeared to be. Even though she
looked Vulcan the woman certainly didn't smell like one. She had a
unique scent, familiar, yet different somehow from the others she'd
come across. Also, there was a turbulent power within the woman,
something not common to the Vulcan species. It sprang from every pore
and was easily detected by one with heightened senses. Vulcan's exuded
a calm, non-emotional confidence, yet this one only pretended at it.
Growing bored watching the woman take meticulous readings the cat
jumped down and without a sound crossed the space and leapt onto the
control panel surprising the woman. Hopefully she wasn't a cat hater,
because it could get real ugly if she was.
The brunette arched a brow at the black cat. "I guess the Marquis was
mistaken about the animals on the planet!" A'Kora scowled immediately
raising her tricorder to scan the furry intruder.
The cat's purr rumbled loudly, sounding almost like a laugh as it began
to rub against the panels. "Felis catus," the engineer said to herself.
<<Common house cat! In your dreams!!!>> The insulted feline meowed
loudly. Walking across the console to deliberately get in the woman's
way, the cat purposely began swatting tools off the panel.
"Stop that!" A'Kora commanded reaching for the cat.
"Lt. Commander, did I just hear a ..." The Security Chief asked
entering the shuttle, "...cat?"
The feline froze when she saw the redhead gaping at her, his eyes
dropping to the amulet hanging from her neck. Ury gasped in recognition
but before he could say anything the cat's ears flattened against her
head and a loud hiss tore from her throat her eyes fastened to the door
behind him.
They were here! She'd sensed them too late and a terrified scream split
the night air. Leaping from the panel she sprinted for the open door.
Red eyes reflected in the foliage from the perimeter lights around the
shuttle and there was no doubt the creatures were here to feed. A
putrid stench filled the air and the primal urgings of ancient
ancestors began to take over and the little black cat's growls grew
more vicious with each step.
That's why the hidden ones had left so suddenly. She'd thought it was
to follow their Master, but they knew..they knew the crew would be a
perfect target for the grotesque ones. Vile disgusting creatures they
were too, inhabiting the very bowels of the castle itself, scurrying
about in the catacombs and other dank places that lived only in
nightmares to feed mindlessly on anything that moved, including their
own.
They had no fear of 'The One' and his followers and had even managed to
lessen his numbers on more then one occasion despite the Marquis's
precautions. Lately though it had taken on the tone of a war between
the two species, one bent on the others destruction at any cost.
But, they 'were' afraid of her, and she was out the door of the shuttle
running after several of the crewmen who hurried to investigate the
screams.
Never breaking stride the cat's body began to distort and change,
powerful muscle and sinew replacing the small frame as it grew in size.
At a full charge now, it's deep horrifying snarls filled the night,
sending shivers through those that heard it. The security team barely
had time to regroup when a large orange blur streaked past them into
the dark foliage. Hideous snarling and inhuman screams of agonizing
pain accompanied the primal sounds of death as it crashed through the
underbrush as the creatures scrambling frantically to flee from the
savage predator.
Two grosslings were not so willing to give up their chosen meal as they
bent over the mortally wounded officer. They swiftly learned the folly
of this action when without mercy the tiger's razor sharp claws and
fangs tore into their hairy hide easily striping flesh from bone.
Crimson streaks marred the orange striped coat as powerful jaws bit
into the head of the closest creature killing it instantly, the other
quickly making a hasty retreat. The warm taste of chicory filled her
maw and the ancient urgings of her kind filled the massive tiger. She
hungered just as they did and proceeded to drag her kill away. These
were nasty creatures to be sure but they had been a good food source
since her abandonment. She didn't doubt if these stupid creatures ever
shared a cohesive thought amongst them they might actually be able to
overwhelm her, but they lived only to breed and feed and nothing more
so made easy pickings.
Hearing sounds of the approaching humans the big cat left her kill
close to a rotting log to help cover the smell. They would be more
concerned with their fallen crewman for the present, so with a quick
flip of it's tail the tiger melted into the darkness to make sure there
were no more of the creatures lurking about.

[=2E.] At the castle
<Snip>
Miaren stepped up behind the First Officer. "Commander." Miaren
whispered
and nudged her. "We might have a problem; my com link went dead the
moment
we stepped over the threshold."
<End Snip>
Montana felt the poke in her side her head slowly turning to glare down
at the shorter woman. The Doctor's eyes widened, "Just thought ya
should know." She added in a whisper talking a small step back.
"Thank you Doctor." The First Officer answered flatly, "But next time
words alone will be sufficient." Tapping her own badge, Phillips to the
away team] not receiving the familiar chirp she tried it again.
One of the security officers walked over to the pair, "Commander, there
seems to be some sort of a dampening field around the structure."
Montana nodded flipping open her own tricorder to take readings,
"Retrace our steps out of the gate until you can contact the other
team. Let Lieutenant Rogan know and as soon as they finished to join us
here. Contact the ship so they are aware of the situation."
"Yes Ma'am!" He answered quickly turning to leave.
"Take Ensign Haley with you I don't want anyone wandering around
alone."
"Is something wrong Commander? I've seen to refreshments and we can
retire to my drawing room while we wait for your people to finish." The
Marquis asked seemingly to appear out of nowhere, "We need to get out
you of this rain you are soaked." His silky tone rolled over her in
such a way it sent a shiver down the tall redhead's spine.
"It appears you have a dampening field around the castle and it's
interfering with our equipment, but nothing to be alarmed about
Marquis."
"Ah yes the dampening field, it helps with the radiation." He answered
in a non-committal tone sweeping his arm graciously towards the door.
Montana's eyes narrowed, "No doubt!" she answered giving the man a curt
nod before moving to follow him. There was something that was just not
quite right about this whole situation and then to have a medieval
castle appear of all things. Of course the dampening field would shield
it from the ship's sensors so she couldn't help wonder what else might
be hidden around.
Glancing back to the CMO she noticed the nervousness in the Doctor's
eyes. She really shouldn't be so hard on the woman after all this was
her first shipboard duty and away mission, and Montana well remembered
her first time. Pursing her lips the tall officer gave Miaren a shadow
of a smile nodding for her to follow. Her team knew their jobs well and
the security officers stayed close as they took up the rear of the
small procession.
The distinguished Marquis was intensely charming and of course the
perfect host as he led them down an ornately decorated hallway
explaining various parts of the d=E9cor. Despite her hesitation the
First Officer felt compelled to do his bidding without question, and
couldn't quite put her finger on as to why.
"Ladies," he said giving Montana and Miaren an elegant bow then turning
to the security team as an afterthought, "and Gentleman of course. You
really must get out of those wet uniforms, it is not good for you. We
do have an array of finery that you can use temporarily while your
uniforms are being cleaned of any traces of our atmosphere. Sybil can
show you to a changing room and then you can join me."
"That's really not necess.." Montana started to protest but the Marquis
waved his hand in an odd way and she blinked in confusion. "Why that's
very kind of you Marquis. It is rather chilly in these wet uniforms."
Now why the hell had she said that?
Motioning the others to follow the redhead obediently started after the
tiny woman that had suddenly appeared at the Marquis' side. Like a lamb
led to slaughter Montana muttered uncannily under her breath.
