Subject: [WEB] Mind Games of the Wicked
Scene: Hau-hra's lair, late night, Day 22
He walked with an awkward grace, one that took a moment to realize what
was
wrong with it. Though he walked towards her, his body moved backwards.
Only
his face was directed towards her.
He stopped before her, an evil smile on his withered lips that seeming
threatened to break his wrinkled and weathered face. Only his eyes
danced
with life and vitality, and they pierced into her soul. She sat
kneeling on
the cold cement floor, a metal collar bound tightly about her neck. A
thick
metal chain connected her to the wall, and had so far resisted all
efforts
to remove it.
"Soon." He whispered, though his voice cut into her like a knife. "Soon
I
shall have all that I need." He reached out to stroke her cheek.
Immediately
she flinched, her eyes openly revealing a confused horror mingled with
disgust. "Soon." He repeated, his mouth twisting into a satisfied
smile.
Natasha was aware of the fear emanating from her and it bothered her.
She
was never one to allow others to instil such a weak emotion in her.
Lowering
herself to what she considered such a common level was sickening.
But...this
was different. And her ability to reason was abandoning her. She
cringed and
shut her eyes as an icy shudder travelled up from her cold and aching
legs.
Hau-hra chuckled as he pulled back, savouring the drawn-out fear that
came
from the girl. It always proved so much more satisfying to break down
the
walls of one with a strong will.
His body moved forward, disappearing into the darkness. "But first, my
lovely, lovely child, a test." The whisper reached her ears from the
encompassing shadows. A muffled whimper came to her, followed by the
sound
of a heavy object being dragged across the floor, growing louder and
louder.
Natasha slid herself backward as the sound grew nearer, but the thick
chain
that stayed her had only given a few inches from the wall to begin
with. She
knelt against the cold, damp wall now, huddled and ****vering, trying
desperately to focus in the immense pitch that surrounded her. And as
the
distorted figure of her captor slowly emerged, what she saw made her
eyes
grow wide with terror and confusion. She involuntarily let out a small
cry
and buried her head in her arms, wi****ng silently that she had never
come to
America.
Hau-hra let the body fall to the ground before her. It seemed to be a
man,
but he had no skin. Pinky-red muscle glared back angrily at her.
Suddenly,
the body shook, and the man's head turned to stare at Natasha, no
eyelids
with which to close them.
"Please." The man croaked, lifting a shaking arm to her. "Help me."
With an offhand motion, Hau-hra tossed an object towards her. It
skittered
across the floor and came to a stop against her knee. Peering down,
Natasha
saw that it was a gun, a black metal pistol.
"The choice is yours, little one. Can you end this man's life?" Hau-hra
laughed quietly to himself.
The stench was dreadful. Gasping for a clean breath, Natasha quivered
as she
eyed the body. He continued to stare at her, his eyes glazed over as
his
body convulsed and shook. When his outstretched hand finally dropped,
with a
dull thud, to the floor, her head began to spin. She acknowledged the
gun
beside her.
"You," she breathed out, "you want me to kill him?" Her stomach churned
and
she could feel the icy sting of bile rising up into her throat. Her
mind
reeled with a thousand different thoughts all at once. Erratic flashes
of
both long ago and recent events danced eerily in her mind's eye - the
school
- Ms. Miller - she heard mocking whispers and someone shouted "*****!"
-
Nicole Harding - she saw a van - her head was aching and a vision of
her
grandmother gave her pause. Evil, all contorted and backward - a
heartbeat -
a man with no skin - a werewolf. Her pulse quickened and she heard
herself
sob outwardly as she was pulled back to awareness. She let her hand
drop so
that her fingers touched the revolver.
Hau-hra looked on in anticipation, watching as she tentatively reached
out
for the gun. He drank in her horror over the situation, her repulsion
of the
stripped body that lay between them, her terror at not being able to
run
away from it all.
It took a long moment for the girl pick up the weapon and an even
longer
moment for her to curl one slender finger around the trigger. When she
did,
though, audible gurglings and moans could be heard from the would-be
corpse
that lay before her. She couldn't tell whether it was despair or
anticipated
relief that the body was expressing. She could hear her captor drawl
out in
a near whisper, "yeesss", and quickly tried to shut him out. Natasha
closed
her eyes and imagined to herself that she would be doing him a favour,
doing
the 'humane' thing, if she'd shoot him like a dying animal.
But she wouldn't. Not yet. She kept her eyes downcast for a moment,
lifting
the gun into her other hand so that she had the strength of both to
steady
it. Recognizing what seemed like op****tunity, she allowed herself a
small
sliver of hope. And then, with a silent oath she turned and levered her
shaking arms upward, aiming the pistol directly at Hau-hra. "Let me
go...".
Hau-hra paused a moment, then grinned a horribly pleased smile. "How
intelligent of you, child, and selfish. An exquisite combination. To
save
yourself over your fellow man." He moved towards her, stepping over the
body. "You shall be freed when you are ready, not before." A hand
reached
out for the gun.
The shaking intensified as Natasha struggled to keep her aim. She
pulled her
hands closer to her chest as he approached until he was directly before
her
and the weapon was clutched firmly at her bosom. Her brows furrowed and
she
shook her head. *N..no* she thought, both inwardly and outwardly
horrified.
Hau-hra reached out further, and a loud bang rang out. Natasha yelped
in
surprise, almost dropping the gun into her lap. Hau-hra took two steps
back,
and looked down to his belly. A wisp of smoke rose from where the
bullet had
pierced through the robe he wore.
It took a few moments for Natasha to realize that he did not appear
hurt,
nor did blood flow from the wound. Instead, he grinned again. "Most
excellent. Few can act on their instincts, to truly do what their
nature
tells them to do. A killing wound for most, I should imagine, though a
particularly long and painful one. Most heartless indeed."
With a sudden flash, he snatched the gun from her hands, raising
another
yelp from her. "So, as your reward, you shall see how beautifully
horrific
such a wound can be."
Another shot rang out, and the body convulsed on the floor. The man
reached
weakly to his stomach, and placed a hand over the bleeding wound,
gasping
and choking.
Grinning, Hau-hra faded back into the shadows of the room.
How perfectly poetic a plan it was for him to leave her bound before
the
dying man. She would not be able to bring herself to turn away, nor
could
she easily witness his slow, agonizing death. How sadly gut-wrenching.
Natasha, tears streaking down her cheeks, watched through squinted eyes
as
the body quivered and convulsed on the floor, her own trembling nearly
matching that of the dying man. His fate was sure. Hers was unknown.
For a
brief moment she considered the awful irony of it, that the tortured
soul
writhing slowly to his death would, at least, soon be free.
What had her captor meant when he'd called this her reward? She could
never
relish in such a thing! She'd meant to somehow escape and help the man,
somehow. Her mind spun now. She had pulled the trigger. She was able to
pull
the trigger.
Lifting her hands to her ears, Natasha tried to shut out the sound of
life
emptying itself from the fleshless body. It was agony! What began as
sympathy for the man, turned to anger. And from the anger stemmed hope.
But,
Natasha was not immune to the mind games being played. Thoughts tossed
about
in her mind as she began to question her own morals. The sounds grew
louder
and blood seeped closer to her knees as the man bled. The scent of raw
meat
hung thickly in the already dank air. She could hardly breathe and her
throat grew reflexively tight. But, her stomach gave no warning before
she
heaved, lurching forward as much as the chain would allow, spewing out
the
bitter, yellowed remnants of things nearly digested.
She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand, her breathing harsh.
Tears
stung her eyes and clung to her lashes. Turning her head slowly, she
looked
at the body on the floor. Still not dead. The hope she'd felt only a
moment
before was twisting into impatience, and all she wanted was for the
noise to
stop, for the bleeding to stop, for the odor to go away!
Hau-hra's words rung in her head, "Most heartless indeed....and
selfish".
She uttered an inaudible plea before slumping against the wall and into
dark
oblivion.

[DL-D] Be Careful What You Wish For!
T'rell
Day 104, Morning
/snip from Tree's post "And the Spoils Go To...?"/
Slowly rising to her feet Almantha languidly stretched her wings
letting
loose with a huge bored yawn. The hazy sunlight reflecting on the
golden flecks in
the copper scales created a lovely ****mmering halo around the young
queen and
Pandora smiled, marveling at how beautiful her queen really was. It was
too
bad the female dragon didn't have a personality to match. Almantha
dramatically
rolled her neck this way and that until her snout dropped coming back
level
with the Wingleader's face <Wellll, I'm waiting!>
Standing his ground T'rell's head rose to meet the goldish gaze, **I
was
thinking that maybe...**
The large eyes narrowed, <Forget you Human, I'll tell ya what!> The
queen
interrupted. <You get my rider to go flying with me and I will be
*cough gag*
nice, at least until Lady G's eggs hatch!>
The blonde man's eyes widened in surprise as he automatically glanced
over at
the anxious woman, then back to her queen. **But...**
Emitting a huge sigh Almantha drew circles in the ground with her claw,
innocently batting her scaly eyelids the copper tail began to twitch
menacingly, <
Oh welllll. if you don't think you can do it...> The queen crooned with
a mock
sweetness then starting to turn away.
/end snip/
T'rell cursed under his breath. Having more-or-less accepted her
challenge just by the fact that he had made the offer, he was pretty
much committed
now. *Okay, wait,* he said. *I can do it....somehow. But only IF you
really mean it about being nice.*
[Until the eggs hatch,] Almantha repeated. [After that, we'll see.]
T'rell chuckled. *And you have to be nice to Flerrion, too.*
[Hey, I didn't say I'd do that!] Almantha snarled.
*Well, okay, I guess you weren't really serious about wanting your
rider
to go flying with you...* he said, and now it was his turn to begin
walking
away.
[AAARGH! Okay, I will *try* to be nice with the big dummy!] the queen
responded, steam puffing from her nostrils as she stamped a clawed foot
in
frustration.
*And if he wants to cuddle with you...?*
[You're pu****ng, it buddy!] the copper queen snorted.
*Okay, forget that part,* T'rell said. *Look, I'll get you what you
want, but I may have to resort to something...unconventional. Will you
trust
me?*
[MISTER, I WOULDN'T TRUST YOU ANY FARTHER THAN I COULD THROW...] She
stopped and a thoughtful look came over her face as she calculated just
how far
she could throw T'rell....
*Okay, forget that too,* said T'rell. *Will you go along with whatever
stupid idea I come up with? If it gets your rider to fly with you, that
is?*
[Deal!] Almantha snorted smugly. [But if you flop and mess this one
up, you're soooo gonna wish you were transferred someplace else!] She
cocked
her head and thought that one over too, and it didn't seem like such a
bad
outcome...
Panda, meanwhile, looked worried as she could only stand and wonder at
the silent conversation that was going on between the two. T'rell's
dark
looks and Almantha's snorting and stomping didn't reassure her. But
finally,
when T'rell turned away and the queen settled back down on the green,
the look on
his face was one of satisfaction.
"So, how did it go?" Panda asked nervously. "Is she willing to be
nice?"
T'rell chuckled. "Why don't you ask her?"
"I did, and she's being evasive," Panda answered. "That's not a good
sign. T'rell, she may be up to something, I'd better ask her some more
questions..."
T'rell shook his head. "No, she'll be fine. Even Almantha has her
good side. Granted, no one has ever seen it, but it must be there..."
Panda grimaced and slapped him on the shoulder. "Well, now that you
have agreed to make peace, maybe we can go over to the dining hall for
a nice,
*peaceful* cup of coffee?"
"Their coffee's not the best, but I like the company," he said, putting
his arm around her. As they walked toward the dining hall, he became
aware of
a pair of yellow-gold eyes whose glare seemed to be boring into his
back.
After they'd gone, Flerrion sauntered up and plunked himself down
alongside Almantha. [Hi!] he said brightly.
[What are YOU doing here??] she growled.
[Well, my rider said that you would...]
[That's AFTER he does what he promised, buddy boy!] she snarled, [And
it
does NOT include cuddling! Now SCRAM!]
With a sigh, Flerrion decided to make himself scarce.
*But don't go to far!* T'rell told him. *I have a feeling I may need
you for this.*
* * * * * *
Early Afternoon
T'rell had conceived the plan while sitting down with Panda for coffee
at
the dining hall. It was a rather simple plan, as things turned out -
the
only materials he needed were a length of good, stout rope, and several
buckets
of soot from the kitchens. The rope was on hand at the training
barracks,
but Realee had given him a very strange look when he came in and
appropriated
the last several days' ac***ulation of soot which - fortunately for him
- hadn't
yet been taken out for disposal.
The difficult part had been to convince Almantha to let him make the
preparations without telling her exactly why he was doing what he was
doing -
because she'd never have agreed had she known, and that would have put
him back
to square one. Fortunately for his purposes, there was an unused
ground-level
queenrider apartment that was, because it sat around a corner from the
others, was out of sight from the green. It also helped that a couple
buildings
had been erected to either side of the entrance, making it a very
secluded spot
and also giving T'rell places - once he had hammered in a pair of hooks
in the
walls that fronted the entrance to the queenrider quarters on either
side - a
place to anchor the ropes.
He told Flerrion to go into the vacant queen's apartment and wait, then
had Almantha lie down so that she was half-in and half-out of the
apartment.
He then proceeded to get her saddled.
[Hmph, I hope for your sake this works, buddy-boy!] Almantha snorted.
[If I have to go to all the trouble to get saddled and then get
UN-saddled all
for nothing, you're never going to hear the end of this!]
*Oh, quit grumping,* T'rell told her. *I'm the one doing all the work,
you're just laying here grousing!*
[Can I come out of here now?] Flerrion asked.
*Not yet, you still have a job to do in there!* T'rell told him.
Now he proceeded with the next part of his plan, stringing the ropes
that had already been secured to the walls on either side through
Almantha's
saddle straps and pulling them tight. He tied them together so that the
knot
holding the whole thing together was right atop the saddle itself.
*Okay, can
you get up?* T'rell asked the queen.
Almantha tried a couple of times, but found that she couldn't. [Oh,
real smart!] she said, rolling her eyes. [I'm supposed to fly when I
can't
even stand up? You're dumber than Flerrion, and another thing...]
*Enough! Quiet!!* T'rell said in exasperation, giving her a swat on the
nose to get her attention. *Just let me explain!*
[THIS BETTER BE GOOD!!] Almantha growled, jetting steam out at him.
*Okay, look,* said T'rell. *Your rider won't get up onto the saddle so
you two can fly, right?* The queen nodded in reply. *So, we need to
make
her think it's really im****tant that she get up there!*
[And how do we do THAT?] Almantha demanded, forcing T'rell to stay on
the move with yet another snort of steam.
*Because you're going to be threatened by a wyvern,* T'rell explained.
Before the surprised queen could demand where T'rell was going to get a
wyvern for his plan, the wingleader disappeared into the cavern where
Flerrion
- and the buckets of soot - waited. *Close your eyes,* T'rell told the
crimson dragon. *Oh, and your mouth too.*
A second later, a cloud of black soot erupted from the cave as T'rell
threw the buckets one by one. With an indignant snort, Almantha flapped
her
wings to keep any of it from settling on her. From inside came the
distinctive
sound of a dragon coughing, and a rather soot-streaked T'rell ran out
of the
cave. Flerrion stuck his head out a second later, glaring after T'rell.
The
crimson dragon had so much soot on him that he might have passed for a
wyvern
if one didn't look too close - or if the light was bad.
[Gee, thanks,] Flerrion grumbled.
*Our wyvern,* T'rell said. "Now, here's what happens. You tell your
rider that you need help quick, that you're in danger...she runs over
here,
and sees you caught in the entrance by these ropes. She'll also see our
wyvern
here just behind you, ready to pounce.*
[Dumb human, even I know that wyverns don't use ropes!] Almantha
snorted. [She isn't going to believe this!]
*I made it look like the ropes were just hanging there, and you ran
into
them by accident as you were fleeing from the vicious wyvern,* T'rell
explained. *Now, I've made it so they can be cut right up there on the
saddle -
where she'll be sitting when she rushes up to rescue and cuts the ropes
using...hmm...this!* He ran into the apartment and came out a moment
later with a long
knife which he inserted into a sheath at the edge of the saddle. *Now,
you
need to make sure your rider knows that the knife is here, and that
this is
where she needs to cut...um, you *can* make her aware of that without
being too
obvious?*
[Well, yes, but...]
*Good! So, she comes here in response to your cry for help, sees the
menacing wyvern in the dimly lit entrance right behind you, and then
sees that
you've managed to carelessly entangle yourself in these ropes as you
tried to
make a run for it. She'll then realize that her only chance is to free
you,
and she can only do that by jumping up to the saddle and cutting the
rope. The
moment that happens, you take off. Oh, and make sure you tell her to
fasten
the straps before you actually take off - this is one of the training
saddles, and it's got extra easy straps for new trainees. She just has
to slip them
on, which will only take a second. Then, you'll just need to give us
long
enough to sneak our 'wyvern' out and get the soot off him, and
everything's
done.*
[And that's it?] the queen sneered.
*Well, yes, except that then you have to be nice to both Flerrion and
myself until after the eggs hatch, and maybe after that you'll decide
it's such a
good feeling to act nice toward people that you'll actually decide that
you
want to...*
[YOU DUMMY, THIS IS NOT GOING TO WORK!!!] Almantha yelled, so loud she
almost knocked T'rell over. [YOU THINK I'M GOING TO LET MY RIDER THINK
I WAS
SCARED OF A STUPID WYVERN AND RAN AWAY FROM IT?? AND THEN THAT I WAS
STUPID
ENOUGH TO GET CAUGHT IN THESE STUPID ROPES??? AND THEN THAT THE BEST I
COULD DO
WAS TO YELL FOR MY RIDER TO COME AND GET ME OUT OF IT??!] She was
snorting
so much steam out that T'rell had to back away several paces, and for
good
measure she reached out and clawed the ground just in front of him,
making the
already-taut ropes creak as she tried to swat at him.
*Well, gee thanks!* T'rell said. *Here I go to all this trouble to
help you out, and you can't even do the one little thing that you need
to do to
make it work! That's gratitude for you!*
[I am NOT going to call my rider over here so she can think I'm an
idiot!!] Almantha growled, only marginally calmer than she'd been just
a moment
ago.
*Look, just tell her you're being attacked by a wyvern and she won't
even have time to think about how stupid this all looks,* T'rell said
in
exasperation, as he ducked past her and went through the apartment
entrance. He had
to be out of sight when Panda arrived, to preclude any possibility that
she'd
turn to him for help. For this to work, she'd have to think she was the
only
one who could help, and get up onto the saddle before she actually
realized
what she was doing.
And then, or so he hoped, she'd realize that dragonriding wasn't such a
bad thing - even when your dragon happened to be a spoiled brat!
[I am not saying anything!] Almantha snarled. [Now cut me loose, and
you go and think of something better!]
*I can sit here all day if you can!* T'rell said, equally stubbornly.
*Sooner or later someone's going to see you sticking half out of this
cave
entrance anyway!*
Almantha didn't reply, just raised her head and haughtily ignored him -
except to give her tail a bit of a swish intended to trip the
wingleader up,
and forcing him to retreat to the back of the cave and out of reach.
*Too bad you aren't a real wyvern attacking her,* T'rell fumed to
Flerrion. *Then she'd holler for help quick enough!*
[Well, I can't attack a queen,] Flerrion said apologetically. [But I
bet I could make her holler pretty loud.] He settled himself across the
queen's back legs, which got an indignant snort from the queen, who
otherwise
continued to give them the silent treatment.
*Make sure Panda can see you when she comes,* T'rell told Flerrion,
guessing what his dragon had in mind.
[Like this?] Flerrion asked, raising his head and twisting his muzzle
into a nasty-looking snarl so that to anyone coming upon them from
outside the
cave, it would have appeared that there was indeed a vicious wyvern
just
inside, menacing the queen. Almantha turned her head just slightly to
see him,
then snorted and looked straight ahead once again.
*Yep, now she just has to do her part,* T'rell said. *Let's give her
some incentive.*
[Okay!] Flerrion said, keeping his blackened, snarling visage in view
over the coppery queen's back, while unseen in the shadows he began to
tickle
Almantha's back feet with his claws. Not the kind of wyvern attack
Panda would
think was occurring, T'rell figured as he retreated to the farthest
corner of
the cave to await the explosion that was likely to occur in the next
few
seconds, but hopefully it would do under the cir***stances.

"Clear that up I can't understand him! Number One repeat that last
message!" Brant commanded leaning forward in his chair.
"Sir, our communications are being jammed!"
"What? How?" Brant demanded.
A moment's calculation seemed like an eternity. "From the cloaked ****p,
Captain!"
"Freda? Can you hear me?" The Captain called out.
<Aye sir!> Came the prompt reply.
"Commander Mitchell's team is in trouble. Get back to Operations
immediately."
<On it, sir.>
"Captain!" Tactical called out. "The ****p, it's moving."
Brant looked out at the viewscreen, examining the black space in a vain
hope of seeing the ****p. "Where is it going?"
Another eternity. "Towards Starbase 10, sir, at full speed."
<End Snip>
"I think!" the Tactical Officer added with a bit of uncertainty.
"Good enough for me! Red Alert!" The Captain commanded and the claxon's
began clanging their warning. Personnel immediately began ru****ng to
their stations all over the ****p.
"Can you get a lock on the away team!"
"There's too much interference Captain!"
"See if you can clear up communications to Commander Mitchell!"
"We're still being jammed!" The COM Ensign responded.
Freda was in another part of the station, why was it they could get
through to her, but not to Mitchell? Brant's eyes scanned the view
screen taking in every detail of the starbase. "Ensign Gray, put us
directly in the path of that ****p without crossing the border. I want
us between them and the station. Ensign Reddick, see if you can get Lt.
Freda back!"
The Cheron's voice was barely recognizable as the bridge filled with
static. Brant's jaw clenched tightly his eyes never leaving the viewer.
At least she was on her way to meet up with the others, well at least
he hoped she was.
"Captain, I've lost the Romulan ****p!"
Glancing over his shoulder he looked at the tactical station. The hazel
eyes demanded an answer and the officer shook his head. "I'm scanning
for Tetryon Emissions but there isn't any now. It's just..gone!"
"Ensign Reddick?"
"Communications are still being jammed Sir!"
"From where, now?" Brant asked. "Scan the station!"
Brant folded his arms and began to stroke his beard. "Correlate that
****p's last known heading. Broaden your scanning range out from there.
Try rotating the frequency to see if you can pick something up. Look
for shadows!"
Glancing at the communications officer, "Open me a channel on all
frequencies."
"Go ahead Sir!"
Brant's deep voice boomed across the bridge, "To cloaked vessel, this
is Captain Brant Reed of the USS Calypso-B! You are possibly entering
Federation space! Please identify yourself!"
NRPG: Ok Gang, Brant's got his problems so what is going on down at the
station?
Respectfully submitted by,

Captain Brant L. Reed, commanding
USS Calypso-B
***Summary***
MD 4:1000 The Caly's communication is cut off from the away team, and
