Day 22
Past Midnight

[SNIP]

"Alorian?' Alex was surprised to see Alorian on his doorstep.well,
apartment
hallway.
"Is everything ok?" She nodded and walked past him into his apartment.
"We
need to talk."

[END SNIP]

"Oh my dear, that was just a bit too obvious, wasn't it? I did expect
more
of you."

Kayn leant against the building he stood beside, his eyes watching his
recent companion hurry inside the house and close the door behind her.

After he'd left her apartment, he'd waited and followed her, interested
as
to what she'd go for first, *** or business. From the looks of it; a
little
of both.

"Well," he murmured as he turned away, having committed her new
friend's
face and scent to memory," I suppose I should feel flattered." Moving
off,
he easily melted into the night, blending in with the sleepless mass
that
was the city.

Far from wandering aimlessly, Kayn moved through the streets with
purpose.
No matter what Alorian may have thought of him, he was not one to take
such
a situation lightly, especially when it came to fellow wolves. The
description of how the female cub had been taken and her subsequent
disappearance even from the keen noses of her fellow garou was
disturbing.
It was practically unheard of that someone or something could manage
it, but
it wasn't totally impossible.

Which was why he was working on a hunch; it was also why he was out to
find
someone. Of course that someone would be, no doubt very unhappy to see
him,

Finding them actually wasn't really a problem, you just had to pick up
the
scent. Not of the person but of the people that person was hunting and
for
a garou, that scent was unmistakable. It was the scent of death, pain
and
torment and the city stunk of it, some placed more than others.

"You really do need to learn to be a bit tidier." He observed,
wandering
down a back ally in a not too shabby part of town, the middle class
houses
in stark contrast to the blood spattered in jagged splotches on the
wall
beside him. "Anyone would think a wild animal had been at work here."

"That's the point." Lucien growled, ignoring Kayn for a moment as he
finished what he'd been doing, the sharp crack of splintered bone
echoing in
the alleyway. What do you want wolf? I don't have time for your
games."

"Sadly, no time for games." Kayn replied, his tone of voice displaying
a
note of seriousness he seldom used. "I came to ask you a question and
somehow, I think the answer affects us both."

"Go on." Lucien faced him, his face neutral, as if he didn't quite
believe
the other.

"Tell me," Kayn asked in a monotone, his eyes intense. "Do you know
what
kind of being would, or could, kidnap a wolf cub and take off with her,

leaving absolutely no trial behind?"

Lucien studied the figure before him; listening to his words and his
stance.

"And when I say none, I mean nothing even a wolf could sense. Dead
Earth."

Lucien continued to stand in silence pondering the words, the hidden
meanings behind them and acknowledging that he understood enough to
have
returned with questions this time.

How much this affected his Lady was what drove Lucien. She was to be
protected at all costs, and if he had to allow the sacrifice of one of
their
cubs to keep her safe, well, that was the way of the world.

"I would answer that perhaps one should look closer to home." Lucien
intoned
with a level of seriousness to match that of his opponent. "Evil walks
in
all forms." He replied in true honesty.

"My first question would be who was this cub? What are her ties within
their
society? Who profits from her disappearance? Who is destroyed?"

"A good question." Kayn replied, looking up at the clear sky and
sighing.
"I don't know directly, but I can surmise that the cub is close to the
pack
Alpha, if not a relative. If it's a cub taken for their influence it
might
even be his own."

The idea of someone being able to snatch a cub and disappear like that
had
disturbed Kayn greatly. It would take meticulous planning, a lot of
courage
and whatever this power of cloaking was to pull it off. No person or
thing
would want a howling wolf pack on their tail hungry for revenge, no
matter
the profit. Unless; they didn't care about that. . . .

"To take a leader's child is a bold move." He continued, gauging
Lucien's
reaction to his words. "They'd have to be mad, or desperate, or simply
not
care about the consequences." His eyes narrowed. "I think you know
something here. I've sensed things like this in the past but never
come
face to face."

"And what if I do know something?" Lucien replied calmly. "How does
this
affect me?"

Kayn snorted. "Don't give me that." he said sharply. "You know very
well
this affects the safety of your lady. Something like this prowling the

streets. . ." He stared at Lucien for a moment, lightly sniffing the
air.
"You know something more." He growled. "It directly affects her,
doesn't
it?"

Lucien kept his face in a perfect neutral mask, hiding the swirling
emotions
that lay just beneath the surface.

"I know many things and have seen more." He retorted simply. "You are
correct, any evil that is too close to my Lady is not to be borne." He
answered.

"She is not to be disturbed nor is her circle of influence to be
disrupted.
That is where I come in. She is the Mistress of the Garden, I am the
simple
gardener, the one who culls and weeds the unwanted."

"I do not have time for flowery words and analogies." Growled Kayn as
he
took a step closer. "There is a wolf cub at stake."

Lucien smiled altho it did appear to be more of a snarling sneer.
"That
issue does not concern me, nor has it anything to do with my Lady." He
answered.

"As for the missing cub, you scurry after something that is gone and
can not
be returned. Don't waste your energy on that which you can not change."

Lucien began to turn back to that which he had been doing, but paused
and
turned back to face Kayn. "If there are any more questions you wish to
have
answered? I am rather busy, and have many tasks to attend to." His
tone was
of one indulging an indolent child.

"You talk smart but I am not blind, nor deaf." Kayn replied in a tone
that
was approaching deadly. "Cannot be returned? You know the cub is dead

then. If you know that, then you have some idea of what or who did
this."
He grinned viciously. "You're scared aren't you? If a creature can do
this
to one of the wolves, then what might it do to your lady?"

Kayn stepped closer to Lucien, he eyes all but glowing and his tone
relentless. "You think you can do this all on your own, that you will
be
sufficient to protect your lady against this threat. Well, here me
boy, if
this creature can take a cub from an entire pack of wolves, what do you

think your chances are on your own? You'll come home one day to find
your
lady decorating the walls and the ceiling, and then what will you say?
What
smart remark will you make then?"

With that he turned his back on the other, pulling his coat around him
as he
did so. "Your lady may be your concern, but the wolves are mine." He
added
over his shoulder. "You say the cub is gone? Well that may be, but I
will
still discover what did it and how. Maybe when your lady is in enough
danger you will discover that sometimes acting alone is not the
smartest
options. Believe me, I know." With that, he slipped around the corner
and
off into the night.

Lucien snarled softly at the retreating back of the one he deemed not
quite
an enemy, but one who he could respect, if things had been different.
Lucien
turned back to that which he was doing before he had been interrupted.

He discovered the anger and ire was gone, and he did not wish to try to

rekindle it. These were but minions, and of no true consequence. For if
they
were that im****tant, the creature, the demon that walked among men
would
have kept them better protected. No he had them to stir up the chaos
they
served.

Lucien bristled at his words. For in truth they spoke very close to
what he
had already surmised and pondered. She was in danger, and altho they
were
not alone and battling this demon alone, in the end, his Lady would
have to.
Only she had the power, or rather had the beginning of the power to
call his
true name and bind him.

Once that was accomplished, the Council of the Gods would step forward
with
the army of his Lord and Master Anpu to ensure this demon of the lowest

bowels of hell could be carried back to his rightful place and banished
once
more, never to walk the earth again.

Lucien knew enough of what this creature who was also known as the one
of
the backward face was capable. This snatching of their cub was not an
attack against the wolves, per se. She just had been in the wrong
place at
the wrong time.

She had been taken to satisfy some warped and twisted sense of need on
its
part to keep himself occupied. What concerned Lucien, with every
death, he
would grow stronger, and harder to banish.

How did you try to explain this to one who could not understand
something
this old, this ancient, and this evil? No, Lucien would follow the
council
of his Lord and Master and with his experience of dealing with such
creatures, he would indeed protect her.

There were many ways to protect, and with that thought given to him
from his
mentor he smiled and knew what it was that was needed. He had indeed
been
going on about this in the wrong way.

He had set out, like in the old days, and what he was use to, setting
up a
defense around her and her circle of influence. No, the circle should
begin
around her, the strongest magic and protection spells infused within
her.

With this new thought surging through him, he made his way back to
their
sanctuary to begin the process of weaving the ring of protection around
her.
Lucien grinned to himself as he mentally had to thank the wolf.

Altho, the gods did work in their own strange way, and they had sent
him the
knowledge and wisdom he sought, through an adversary. Grinning with a
new
sense of purpose Lucien scaled the wall of the garden and settled in
for his
meditation, awaiting the dawn.

[TAG- Michael, should Kayn feel like having another adventure, or
perhaps
seek out information?]

NRPG - Also moving the storyline along.

[SUMMARY]

Kayn follows Alorian and marks the scent and face of her contact. Kayn
then
goes in search of one he is sure carries the answers he is seeking.
Kayn
and Lucien again duel with words and Kayn hurls accusations and Lucien
deflects them. They part with a promise that Kayn will learn the
mysteries
of this and Lucien gleans the solution to his problem from Kayn.
Lucien returns to the sanctuary to begin his new plan to protect Kysen.

>From the moment commander Lorn's arm was grabbed Sajin's mind had
seemed to
go into over drive. Something about the whole thing smacked of a re****t
he
had read but he could not recall what it was. The stations science
officer
no longer had the readings of and now seemed to be truly in a deep
sleep or
coma. 'If that was true,' he thought to himself 'then why?'

Turning the answer came quickly to the young science officer, who beat
himself for not thinking of it earlier. Commander Lorn tried to raise
his
phaser as he called for the ****ps computer to raise the force field.
Sajin
could tell what ever was controlling the commander didn't yet have
complete
control, for the phaser never leveled and the commander called on the
other
forms.

Like some ancient horror movie the bodies rose from their beds, but
unlike
the movies these zombies were not slow in movement. Rolling back out of
the
way he was barely missed by one of the stations crew members that tried
to
reach out and grab him. "Don't let them touch you!" Sajin yelled out.

Louie began firing his phaser at the crew members in such rapid
shooting
three bodies went limp. "I have no intention of letting them." the
officer
hadn't noticed the one moving up behind him as Sajin with eyes closed
fired
two shots. The first shot missing the ops officer by inches the other
shot
stunning the zombie crew member.

"Thanks Conner but it helps if you keep your eyes open." He yelled out
and
leaped over an ops station as he tried to avoid another zombie.

Sajin noticed two closing on the Doc and taking Louie's advice fired.
The
shot missed and slammed into one of the computer units. The lights
began to
flicker creating an even eerier environment. Louie how ever didn't miss
nor
did the doctor and the zombies crashed to floor.

Yet, the ones that had been stunned were now getting back up a bit
slower
then first but they were quickly shaking off the effects. They were
clearly
out numbered 9 to 3 and wouldn't be able to hold out long. Lorn had not
moved from his spot merrily calling out commands as he struggled with
his
own inner demon.

The Doc and Louie were now at his side. They would fire at the zombies
while
the away team backed up. However, they were quickly running out of
room.
"Get us out of this mess Conner." Louie hollered as though hoping the
science officer would stop shooting his phaser and causing more damage
to
the ****p.

Glancing around an idea jumped to mind. "Give me 5 minutes,"

"You've got 2." Louie answered and fired off several shoots on his
phaser
the sound of bodies dropping answering in replay. "Or less if I miss a
shot."

"Damn!" was Sajin's only answer in reply, as he pulled off a panel
instead
of unscrewing it to make sure the threads didn't get stripped. He
couldn't
over ride the computer which was his first thought but he could change
what
the computer was doing by changing the sources.

"Hurry Conner," Louie and Doc hollered together as the zombies were
right on
top of them.

"Trying to calculate the best way to do this," Sajin tried to explain.

"Don't calculate now damn it! Just make your best guess." The sound of
bodies dropping was real close and it appeared commander Lorn was now
moving
toward them or a least his voice sounded closer and it didn't sound
like he
wanted to talk.

He Re-routed a couple of rods pulled three fuses and turned off two
panels.
The lights went out completely but the room was illuminated by the
glowing
of the force fields. "That should work."

>From Freda's com link came the startled, "what the hell, who turned
out
lights?"

Sajin looked up and around. It wasn't exactly what he planned but it
worked
never the less. The force field was grid like around the room capturing
a
the swarm of zombies around their area and Commander Lorn in his own
block.

"Away team re****t!" the sound of Capt Brant's voice yelled out from the
com
links.

"Captain, The bodies are infected with a AI host," Sajin replied.

"Conner? Where is commander Lorn?" Brant asked his voice slightly
irritated.

"Ah sir, I fear he has become a zombie." The science officer replied.

"A what?" Came the reply.

"He has been infected with a parasite that has taken control over his
mind
and body, though he appears to have been able to fight it off to some
degree
which, really is very remarkable, and would make a great study."

"Ensign Conner is the situation secure?" The captain interrupted not
wanting to hear the scientific possibilities.

"It is for the moment, Give me 30 minutes and I'll complete control of
the
station." Sajin moved over to the computer console to start taking
control.

"You have 15 and no short cuts," came the reply.

"Damn!" Sajin muttered. "Next time I'm going to ask for twice as much
time."

Scene: Tremere Chantry, Night 8

Karen entered into the antechamber and knelt down, head bowed.

"You wished to speak to me, Elder?"

"Yes." Martin replied. "I have an assignment for you. Please, be
seated."

Karen nodded, pu****ng a stray brown lock of hair from her eyes. She
rose and
took the chair across from him.

"There is a young woman who is showing some promise. She has an uncanny
knack for uncovering that which should be secret." Martin mused,
looking
down into a golden goblet in his hand.

"Useful, to be sure." Karen replied.

"Indeed." Martin agreed. "Which is why I need you to maintain a
surveillance
on her. I have not yet decided how she may best serve us. You are to
monitor
her activities, as well as ensure that there are not others who are ...
interested in her."

Karen nodded again. "I see. And if someone is interested in her?"

"For now, re****t any such sightings to me. If you deem them an
immediate
threat, take appropriate action to protect the subject. Otherwise,
break off
surveillance and return to the Chantry."

"And Larissa?"

Martin paused in thought. "She is old enough to care for herself. But
you
may take her with you if you deem it useful."

Karen took a moment to think, her gaze falling on the small fire that
was
lit in the fireplace. "Very well. Who is it that I am to keep an eye
on?"

Martin reached over and lifted a slim file folder off the end table
beside
him. He held it out to her as he spoke. "Her name is Lindsey Daniels.
You
will find her details in this folder. She works as a historical
researcher,
mostly, with a slant towards the supernatural."

Karen took the file and placed it on her lap. "And how closely should I
monitor her?"

Martin gave a slight shrug. "As closely as you deem appropriate. If you
can
befriend her, then it would be easier to monitor her activities.
Investigate
any friends and colleagues she has, to ensure that they are who they
say
they are. Use Lucas should you require any papers."

Karen nodded absently, eyeing the file on her lap. She looked up at
Martin.
"Is there anything else?"

Martin shook his head. "No, everything should be in the file. Should
you
encounter any problems or resistance, contact me immediately."

Karen rose and bowed. "I shall begin immediately."

NRPG: Time to start bringing Lindsey into the circle, I think.

Chris, aka Karen Stiles and Martin, Clan Tremere
