Subject: [DL-W] - Words in the Dark
Evening
Day 14
Trinale's Garden
> "I can promise you, that you will be given the chance to speak with
her, and
> you may talk with her as long as she wishes." Reolden responded
simply.
>
> "I will hold you to that!" he exclaimed. Reginald spun back around
and
> stormed off into the darkness.
>
> Reolden slumped down on a bench near by and shook his head. Hearing
a soft
> noise and foot-steps looked up and was surprised to see Ash'chenon
standing
> there, holding his pipe and what appeared to be a smirk on his face.
Ash'chenon took that op****tunity to pull out a small bag of
tobacco, and began to load his pipe with it. A thick, wet
smell of cherries filled the air.
"Excitable person, our Reginald," he said.
"How long were you listening?" Reolden demanded.
"Not long," Ash said. "Wasn't trying, really. Just taking a
walk. But, then, you don't have to try very hard to overhear
that, do you?" Ash paused. "I'm suprised at the King's
choice in grooms."
"Why? It solves a number of problems for him." Reolden
sat further down in his seat. "Brings her dowry back into
control, as well as the girl herself..."
"He seems to have a lot of confidence that Reginald will
live through the experience." A match flared, briefly, illuminating
the hollows of Ash's fine, worn face. It was immediately
hidden in a puff of smoke. "Or else, he doesn't know Ari
at all. What she might have done."
"I would bet on the latter," the Prince said.
"All of Greyhawke, hmm? Is she aware of this?"
"I doubt it." Reolden craned his neck back around. "Don't
you tell her, either."
"Is that an order?"
"Of course not. Then you'd be certain to do it."
"I won't tell her. Not yet. It would only be a distraction."
"What are you doing with Ari, Ash'chenon?"
A shrug, a flare of the pipe. "Teaching her. Protecting her.
That's all. But I'll be protecting her from -him-."
"I don't like it, either. But it's my father's will."
"Indeed... but Ari's not some common girl. She has
rights that he can't trample."
Reolden snorted. "That won't make any difference."
"It did with you."
"What are you going to do?"
A half-smile around the stem of the pipe. "We'll see."
He bowed low. "Your Highness."
"Ash'chenon." Reolden shook his head, even as the
other figure faded into the darkness.
