Subject: [DL-N] That which dragons fear

Day 7

Early Morning in the Warren Offices

<snip from Tree's post - Breezy and Jack>

"Anyway, just wanted to make sure you knew that Jocko fellow was asking
questions about the things that had already been brought out of the
cave.

Wasn't sure what you wanted him to know?"

Breezy leaned back in her chair, folding her arms she scratched her
chin trying unsuccessfully to stifle another yawn. "You can show him
what we
have so far, just stay with him and any questions he has, have him come
to
me."

<end snip>

[Late morning - Jack's office]

Jack was lounging with his feet on his desk, mug of coffee in hand,
when Jocko arrived.

When he heard the footsteps in the corridor, Jack hurriedly replaced
his feet on the floor and tried to look 'official'.

Jocko tapped on the door and peered round.

"You wanted to talk to me about the reports I'm writing on the .. umm..
" he seemed uncertain as what to describe his subject matter as. "...
treasure?"
he said.

"Yes, come in," Jack replied, gesturing to a chair. "Coffee?" he
added.

Jocko nodded and grinned appreciatively as Jack poured him a mug.

The accountant paused before starting.

"Now, you know how important all this is..." Jack began.

"Yes, of course," Jocko replied, earnestly.

"Not to mention totally confidential," Jack added.

Jocko nodded. "I haven't breathed a word. People just know I'm doing
some admin work for you, Breezy and the Warrenlady."

"Quite right," said Jack, sternly. "Because as well as being very
important, these items, as I'm sure you know, are very valuable. And
sad to say, quite a few people here wouldn't mind helping to 'liberate'
them
if they knew *quite* what we've uncovered. Too many people know about
them
already."

"I know," Jocko replied, seriously, "but they won't find out anything
from me."

Jack nodded. "I know that too," he said, "and we're all very pleased
with your work ... and your discretion."

Jocko's _expression brightened at that. He opened his mouth, about to
say something. This was it, Jack thought, Jocko's questions. But he
didn't
give him the chance.

"Because you'll need it," Jack added, darkly.

Jocko's jaw dropped.

"Yes, it's not just light-fingered warrenfolk we need to worry about,
though they're problem enough," Jack said, looking deadly serious now.
He
was
enjoying this - lists of figures and charts were all very well, but
just because you were an accountant didn't mean you had *no* flair for
the
melodramatic, did it?

"There are dangerous people out there," he continued, "who would stop
at nothing to harm the warren. I'm not saying that any of them are
involved in this - yet. But there's one in particular who would be
interested - if
he doesn't already know about it yet..."

Jack was thinking of Marssell.

"He's killed before, many times. And he'd think nothing of killing any
one of us if we got in his way."

He paused, and smiled inwardly. Oh, this was wicked, but he was
enjoying himself too much. Poor Jocko!

"But, it looked as though you had something to ask?" he said, raising
an eyebrow.

Jocko looked at him, killed for what was in his office. He opened and
closed his mouth, like a fish out of water. He had never had a
confrontation
with anyone or anything. Killed! He did have a question, but the
thought of
being killed for what he had and what he knew, the question just
disappeared.

"Cat got your tongue?"

"Ummm....." He fumbled for words. " I uh...." He felt dumb, lord just
come up with a question. He moved his glasses so he could see better.
His
mind went blank, the memories of his father came to mind. He never had
a
chance to speak and when he did he was to stuck by what was said to say
anything.

Jack half smiled. "Seems it has it good."

Jocko narrowed his eyes. "Ok...." He took a deep breath, reached into
his bag. "What do you think of these things?" He pulled out a piece of
paper that he had drawn on, there in a sketch was what him and Breezy
had
seen in the cave. The creature with the long claws wrapped in chains.

Jack's eyes widened - this wasn't what he'd expected. He thought he was
well up on the contents of the cave, but he'd missed this! Jocko was
sharp,
he'd give him that.

"Let's see that..." he murmured, taking the paper from Jocko.

The lad was painstaking in all he did, so Jack knew this would be an
accurate drawing.

"What did you draw this from," he asked. "Was it a painting? A
sculpture?"

Jocko smiled a bit, could he tell him what him and breezy had seen. He
seemed to already know about some of the things in the cave. "I saw a
picture on the wall, I couldn't very well bring it with me so I drew it
out.
There some info about them in stuff I have read, I just wanted to know
what
you thought about them. Then I'm going to go talk to Breezy about 'em."

Jack sat silent for a moment.

"What? cat got your tougue?" Jocko smirked.

Jack rolled his eyes and grinned.

"Okay, you got me there," he admitted.

This cave business was a lot bigger - and a lot more interesting - than
he'd
thought. It wasn't just about treasure for a start, though he assumed
that was why Breezy had got him involved.

But this 'monster' in Jocko's picture...

Jack *really* wanted to know more about this!

"So, tell me what you've found out," he said to Jocko, "and then we
*both* go to see Breezy!"

Jocko reached and took the picture back. "All I know is," He put it
back in
his bag. "that the dragons seemed to fear them more then humans." He
looked
at Jack. "Anything a dragon fears has to be bad." He woundered if he
had
said too much. Would Breezy have his head? "I"m hoping Breezy would
know
more....she may be able to tell you more then I."

Jack nodded. This mystery was deepening, and he wanted to be
involved...

He gathered up the papers and handed them back to Jocko with a smile.

"No time like the present?" he said.

<tag Tree - they're off to see Breezy!>
