Subject: [USS CAPRICORN] - JP - Meeting of the Minds
MD4
1300
Miaren's Lab
[SNIP]
There was a knock on the door and it opened. Istria walked in.
"Heard you were looking for me?" She replied with a smile. "Got some
time
for a meeting of the minds?" she teased as she held up all her
findings.
Miaren grinned and nodded holding up hers. "I have found some
interesting
things." Miaren replied.
Istria smiled and nodded. "Me too."
With heads together, the two women began to try to unravel the many
secrets
of the planet.
[END SNIP]
Both Miaren and Istria laid out their findings and began to organize
the
information so they could begin the delicate and fun part of weaving
facts
with what they had been told, and with what they could remember from
their
visit from the planet.
"Well, first fact." Miaren replied simply. "There is NO radiation. So
this
leads me to the conclusion that this was something someone wanted us to
believe."
"Well," Istria pointed out. "We were told this from the residents on
the
planet." She reminded Miaren.
Miaren looked disappointed and looked back at the evidence. "Well, I
would
now say IF there had been radiation, it has not been there for a very
long
time. My guess is there has not been radiation for a good millennia."
"I agree." Istria replied nodding her agreement. "So, the question goes
to
why did the residents on the planet tell us this? And, why have they
been
living as such?"
Miaren nodded and looked back at her findings. "Good point, they most
certainly did act as if the rain would cause us immediate danger and
harm."
"I tested all the plant life and soil samples you sent, and you
gathered
many different types, which was great for me, because that gave me a
good
base to begin my graph and to test each one on multiple levels to get
the
most accurate results." Istria told her.
"What I did notice though, was some strange readings on parts of some
of the
soil samples you sent. They were similar, but some of them had a
sprinkling
of another substance that had been mixed in with it."
Miaren listened and nodded. She too had noticed some of the samples
had
been just a tad different, and not being a geologist, she had hoped
that
Istria might be able to explain it away.
"Did you discover what that element was?" Miaren asked. "I could not
find
anything in any of the books and known research." She added.
"I wouldn't say it's a new element," Istria said, "though that's what I
was
looking for. What I think we're looking at is degradation of the
minerals
caused by the abnormal action of soil microbes."
"But why would the microbes be acting abnormally?" Miaren asked.
"A virus," Istria replied. "Though I haven't managed to isolate it yet.
More
your department, perhaps?"
Miaren grinned. It certainly was.
"So, we can say in all honesty, and with documented proof that there is
NO
radiation, which would be harmful for us to return to the surface of
the
planet." Miaren offered her opinion which Istria nodded her agreement.
"I would also say that we need to make another trip to the surface to
better
see the whole landscape and test the air, water and other elements
under the
varying degrees of the sun." Istria added. "And perhaps find more
evidence
of that possible virus, and how long it has been there. It might have
been
breaking down for millennia." Istria commented as she made more notes
to new
questions she now had.
"Yes, I think this along warrants another serious look at what is down
there. I also think that we might find other answers for our other
questions during the daylight hours." Miaren replied. "That virus might
have
been around for a long time, perhaps when the Marquis and his people
first
came there, it was more evident." Miaren added.
"Ok, so we both agree with the first issue on our list." Istria
replied,
grimly triumphant. This meant she could now demand to go along on the
next
away team to see the place that haunted and dogged her every step since
it
happened so long ago.
Miaren nodded and glanced at the findings and pulled out a second
section of
paperwork. "Ok, so this leads us to the next question we have." Miaren
said
as she shared with Istria her findings on the absence of animals of any
kind
on the surface.
"Yes, I seem to remember not a lot of animals when I was there.' Istria
spoke up, thinking back to that time when it all seemed so strange and
wonderful at the same time.
"And yet, when I returned to the Capricorn I was briefed that we had
injured, and some deaths; and SOMETHING attacked them." Miaren offered.
"Have you heard anything else from anyone?"
"Everyone is rather tight-lipped at this point. I am sure until we
have
this meeting with the Captain and Heads of the affected Departments, no
one
will say a word. What the crew is thinking one can only guess." Istria
offered and thought perhaps when the meeting was done she might take a
risk
and talk with some of the crew members who witnessed the attacks and
some of
the wild events that she had heard the rumors of.
"My one train of thought was this," Miaren began. "We as humanoid are
carnivorous."
Istria nodded her agreement. "And so what do the residents eat for
their
complex protein?"
Both nodded and turned back to their findings.
"Hopefully I shall be able to discover just what sort of creature or
beast
attacked the crew, when I do the post mortems."
Istria nodded silently, remembering the loss of *her* crew.
"So, we can put down that altho there is an absence of any trace of
animals
on the planet, there appears to be some sort of beast or creature that
is
carnivorous and maybe we can learn something from them should we find
their
lair." Istria stated as they both checked off this subject on their
list.
"The last one on the list should prove interesting." Miaren stated and
waited for Istria to turn to her page. "I remember you telling me
about
your mining operation, and how badly it went." Miaren tried to not
bring up
any bad memories for her new friend.
"What strikes me as so interesting; is as I studied some of the reports
that
I came across, mentioned that they went to the planet looking for a
certain
mineral. Some sort of ore that would be used in weapons." Miaren spoke
softly and wanting Istria to hear just what she had looked into, and
that
she took her distress of not being able to solve this riddle was also
important to Miaren.
"Weapons?" said Istria. "My mission had nothing to do with weapons. It
was
solely an exploratory and training mission - at least as far as *we*
were
concerned. Though of course, knowing what I know now, I wouldn't expect
to
have been told the truth about why we were there. Were weapons
Starfleet's
hidden agenda? Well, that fits their ruthlessness in trying to keep us
all
quiet after the 'accident" Istria's remaining eye flashed dangerously.
"Those of us that survived, that is," she added, softly.
Miaren listened and nodded, and felt part of herself vindicated for
using
her name and title to glean what little she did, to help Istria, and to
also
shed light on what Miaren really felt was dirty dealing within
StarFleet.
"Well, according to the report I found, there was NO hint of any
mineral
found here. That there was a terrible explosion and loss of many
lives, but
no trace of any mineral or ore was ever found." Miaren spoke.
"Now, I know what you have told me, and it does not match the report."
Miaren began.
She noticed a mask appear over her features and her countenance
changed.
"The StarFleet report is fabricated." Istria said, carefully. She was
treading dangerous ground here. "But you'll never find anyone to
contradict
it."
Miaren smiled and touched her friend's arm. "Until now; I met someone
who
tells a different story."
"Different how?" Istria asked interested. Wondering just what had
really
happened. Some days she was not so sure anymore.
"Well, the one who came to meet us, welcome us to his world, he took
the
Commander and myself to his castle." Miaren explained. "It was so
strange,
as soon as he appeared; everyone seemed to wish to do his biding."
"Like how?" Istria asked intrigued. "That sounds almost like some sort
of
mind control devise.or worse, to have that actual power." She added.
"Well, everyone seemed to be ok with his being there, and relaxed."
Miaren
replied as she thought back to the incident. "And then the Commander
spoke
to him and the next minute we were following this man through the
jungle and
led to his castle."
"Castle?" Istria said a little surprised at that. "In the middle of a
jungle?" Istria was confused suddenly, for as soon as Miaren mentioned
it,
it was like a new piece to the puzzle, and she did remember a castle.
Now
why had she not remembered before? She had certainly heard the word
before,
why now? Why with Miaren telling her, she could remember one?
"I must admit I was scared when I first saw it." Miaren offered. "I
thought
I was walking to my doom. Like in some old classic horror movie."
Miaren
softly chuckled to try to work through her mixed feelings of what she
had
experienced.
"He hurried us into the castle when the rain began and warned us of the
danger of the rain." Miaren continued her tale. Why was she able to
speak
of this so freely? When she struggled so hard to share the same
information
with the captain and another officer?
Miaren felt the words suddenly there, and without skipping a beat she
told
Istria all she remembered and of the others that were there. She spoke
clearly and precisely and did not try to hinder the tale, hoping now
that
she shared this with Istria, she could recount it to the Captain and
the
others at the meeting.
"So," Istria said, frowning, "You're saying that you found it very hard
to
disagree with these people. Especially this Marquis."
Marquis. Why did that name send such a shiver of recognition through
her?
Istria wracked her brain, but try as she might she couldn't remember
having
met anyone by that name the last time she visited the planet. But
still..that feeling.
"Aye," Miaren replied. "And it seemed to affect some more than others.
I
think I fought it better than most, but he just had this way of making
everything sound..so utterly plausible." She finished.
"Tis why I sent the first batch as soon as I did, it was like I was
fighting
with myself, and I was afraid if I did not I would not be able to send
anything else."
Istria nodded and pondered the new information that Miaren was
providing.
"I was suddenly afraid we were goin to disappear and never be found
again
when we reached the castle..I sent the second batch feeling that this
was
the last chance, and you would have it to help find out what happened
to
us." Miaren confessed.
"Were you that frightened?" Istria reached out to touch Miaren's arm
and
Miaren nodded and fought back the tears.
"And when we stepped into the courtyard..and the line went dead...I was
rather nervous." She answered.
"But then you met.."
Miaren nodded. "Aye, his 2 assistants and the housekeeper I would
guess.
They were pleasant and nice, kind." As Miaren talked more of the
assistants
she got a far away look in her eyes.
Istria watched with interest as she seemed to go within and relive some
moment in time.
Miaren looked up and smiled as she saw that Istria seemed to be
studying
her.
"This is sounding awfully unscientific isn't it?" she grinned weakly.
"Yes," Istria agreed, but her expression was thoughtful. "Though, no
more
unscientific than my unquestioning acceptance of everything I heard
when I
was there. And that is *not* like me!" she said firmly.
Miaren nodded. "Want to know something else strange?" Miaren confided.
"I
tried to tell Captain Reckage of this, of what I just told you, and I
could
not."
"Could not?" Istria asked intrigued. "Explain?" She asked gently.
"I could see all that I had seen, in my mind, and yet no words could or
would form for me to express them. I sounded like some one who had
slept
through the entire experience."
"But..you told me." Istria responded. "You had no problem or trouble
in
doing so."
"Nope." Miaren agreed. "Strange?" she replied.
"Very," Istria said, grimly. "But we shall get to the bottom of this I
promise!"
Miaren nodded and smiled and they both squeezed each others hands.
"Best be getting to the meeting." Miaren spoke up. "I think that with
both
of our findings, the Captain will see that there is a reason for us to
uncover the truth."
"Yes." Istria replied. "I know the answers are on the surface."
Both of the women gathered their reports and findings and made their
way to
the briefing.
[TAG- Josh, Arle, Tree and Rob - time for the briefing and round robin
discussion of the next steps that need to be done to continue the
mission!]
[SUMMARY]
Istria shows up at Miaren's lab and they have a serious discussion of
all
the facts they have learned since the first away team returned. During
the
discussion, Miaren discovers she can tell Istria the "whole" story of
her
experiences on the surface. They both realize there is more going on
here
than what they have been told. They agree to discover the truth and
head
out to the briefing.

Subject: [DL-D]Memories Who Wants Them
[Night 105]
The candle flickered in the warren ladies office as the golden hair
woman
leaned over her letter. A white Quill swayed back and forth like a
dance as
she wrote her letters were graceful, much like the writer herself. From
out
side her window she heard a howl and she stopped a moment. Several
echoing
howls followed suit. She glanced at the letter rolled it up melted a
little
wax and sealed it with the seal of office.
She slid back and getting to her feet walked over to the window. It was
a
clear dark sky but something was nagging at her. She felt a sort of
sinking
feeling. She was in charge of a whole warren and she felt powerless to
do
anything. Alexander's words still haunted her for they were echoed in
her
own heart.
**Sister? ** Galendriel's mind speech seemed to question and try to
comfort
Thea.
*It is nothing* she answered. *Though I wish the wing leaders would
relent
and let us take a night flight*
The Golden dragon heard more then her words, she heard the longing and
desire in her bond mate. She felt the feeling of freedom from flying
the
pure ecstasy that came when dragon and rider flew and the power of it
all
was always enhanced at night under a moon. Riders and dragons that have
managed to live as long as they have are completed connected if one was
separated it would be like cutting the soul from the body and one could
not
live long with out the other.
She missed Lynn's company tonight and hoped all went well with their
journey
and with her Son Eagan. She knew she could count on his help since the
king's attentions seemed else where. The memories seem to flood in and
threaten to destroy what ever peace she had. It was as though she could
feel
the Earl next to her once again teasing her and once again stealing a
kiss.
Oh he was such a rogue she would scream at him but he would simply shut
her
up with another kiss. Never in her life had she ever desired someone so
completely. His touch his skin and his lips even now touching and
caressing
her. The feeling of his hands sliding down her back side the shiver of
the
cold around her driving her closer to him for warmth.
Galendriel purred as the memories and feelings of her rider touched
her. It
was a time of happiness and was something she could never give her bond
mate. Humans are not like dragons, they tend to cling to one love and
become
all broken up when that love is lost, where as dragons can easily love
and
dismiss a love if they favor them no longer.
*Not true sister* Thea interrupted. *Though you are right that most
dragons
are as you say there are the exceptions. I've even heard tell of
dragons
that have resisted the matting call and all there instincts because of
their
love for one dragon or even one human*
**You are right of course but they be the exception** She looked around
for
a moment as she lay there guarding the eggs and breathing fire
occasionally
into the sands to keep her eggs warm. She spied a small red dragon.
*Take
S'laze for example she loves her dragon dearly and if there were some
magic
that could change her to human or him to dragon the two would be
forever
locked together in love. Yet, she tries desperately to push her rider
to
find a lover for she could never give him that desire**
*Oh sister, sometimes I think this connection is both a blessing and a
curse
for there are times that the responsibilities are to great. Yet, in
those
moments of flight I feel I can deal with any thing* Thea picked up her
cloak
and slipped it on.
**I would agree, but then look and Pandora and Almantha a fine pair
those
too. Pandora is afraid of flying yet she loves Almantha, though I think
it
more due to the bonding then to any other quality** She smiled at the
younger golden head dragon that looked her way as though she could here
her
name being thought about.
The guard outside the hall quickly jumped to his feet as the Duchess
exited
the office. She shook her head and the guard blushed with
embarrassment.
T'rell has insisted she have a guard 24 hours of the day. Problem being
warren folk are not soldiers they have been trained to deal with wraith
attacks not the guarding of warrenladies. For that matter the whole of
Triylar was even more complex along with the Wyverns. Though, on the
plus
side they had some good training from dealing with Osran.
As if that very word in her mind was a trigger a call went out for
help.
**Sister, trouble! I fear the Lord Renynar is under attack by land and
air**
*Damn* she muttered as she stepped outside Gamma squad was already
leaping
into the air the multitudes of dragons filled the night air. Beta squad
was
quickly preparing to join them. She watched as Jason got everyone
ready.
**Oh my, it was Dante's patrol that made the discovery** Galendriel
added.
The young mans faced leaped into her mind along with his sister.
*Akety?*
she asked a bit worried for the young girl. *Wait a minute Beta isn't
on
patrol tonight*
**Since you changed her job she is with the young potentials trying to
calm
them down in all the fuss** the dragon offered **And Dante took on a
second
patrol because some one in Gamma called in sick.
Galendriel made a mental note to check with Panda later to follow up on
the
absence to make sure it is legit. Last thing she wanted was people
pulling
doubles it sets a bad precedence.
It didn't take much for the dragon rider and dragon to spot the form of
Samson in the sky which filled them with dread. The fear of losing the
Blacksmith. *Damn me, I should not let personal feelings get in the
way.
They will need those two up there*
**True but I'm sure you would have rather enjoyed having him here
watching
over you, and I wouldn't mind snuggling with Samson again** the dragon
and
rider laughed. The Duchess made her way to the sands where Galendriel
lay
overlooking her eggs. It seemed even Almantha had decided to help watch
the
dragons. To there dismay Sybil and Saber arrived as well.
"Hello Duchess," her words carried over the wind in that seductive deep
female tone she used. "I'm posting some guards here to keep you two
safe?"
"We will be fine," then a thought occurred to her. "Isn't anyone
sleeping?"
"With all this commotion I don't think so, I saw Panda readying the med
center, and my entire unit is up in the sky in case someone tries
something
here." She answered.
Thea nodded but something was nagging at her, she was missing something
but
what? She ran over everything in her mind but everything was being
taken
care of, then a piercing scream from the hatchling barracks pierced the
sky
and all heads turned.
#Careful Satch your going to wake everyone up#
#No I'm not and if you don't stop hassling me Nor, I'm going to rip
your
nose off#
#We there yet.#
##Ah Shut up Tid#
#I told you we shouldn't have brought him* Nor responded.
#Have you seen how fast those damn dragons have killed our brothers and
sisters, if I was going to do this with so few I wouldn't have brought
you
along# Satch replied.
Tid rubbed his claws together in anticipation. #I can't wait human
flesh
yummy#
The other two wyverns looked at their third member and wondered if they
should just kill him now and get it over with.
#Listen Tid, we are here to grab an egg or two we only eat humans if we
can't help it# Satch ordered.
#And keep in mind we only brought you along so you didn't run off and
tell
Methu, he thinks he is running this outfit keeping us in caves listen
to the
damn humans and dragons to report back. While our sisters and brothers
get
all the real fun. Hey what's that.#
The flooring fell away, looking down at them were several human heads.
#oh
acid burp, get them.#

Subject: [DL-D] We're off to see Eagan (JP)
Day 104 Morning
<snip>
"Lyinn I want to thank you for all you've done today, I couldn't have
done as well with out you, which makes this next part very hard." Thea
picked up a parchment from her desk. "I need you to deliver this to my
son, Eagan. But this message can not fall into the hands of our enemies
in any way." Thea turned to the knight. "And so this brings me to you.
I'm sending you with Lyinn to keep her safe from harm, plus your
knowledge of nobles will help you gain audience with my son that much
quicker. What say you two?"
<end snip>
Lyinn nodded without thought. It was her job after all. She glanced to
Alex as Thea addressed him. There was a time when she would have
protested being accompanied for the sake of her protection. But she had
grown much since then. After all she had gone through with M'sollo she
knew better than to protest against a man's protection.
Alex glanced at the dark-haired women next to him, and after she
accepted the mission, he looked back at Theadora and spoke.
"I've pledged my sword and my life to you. I am Your Grace's to send
where You will." He paused for a moment and then continued with a
slight grin, "Besides, I doubt I could keep Talafal from escorting
Mylinna if she left the warren. That silly dragon of mine has grown
quiet found of her. And since I don't want to be known around the
Warren as Alexander the Dragonless Rider, I will accept this most
perilous mission."
<Later that day on the Warren Green>
Lyinnas double checked Mylinna's saddle before climbing up onto her
dragon. She checked to make sure she had the message for Thea's son and
then nodded to Alex. Within moments the dragons were in the air. Every
once in a while Lyin would glance sidelong at Alex. She wanted to talk
to him about what had happened at the hatching and had not had a
chance. She bit her lip lightly as she wondered if he had told anyone.
As far as she knew he and Sharees were the only ones that knew. Lyin
had made the healer promise not to tell anyone, but had not approached
the subject to Alex.
Suddenly Mylinna was angling downward.
{Are we there already?} Lyin asked as she glanced around for an estate.
{No but we are taking a break and you need to talk to Talafal's rider.}
Mylinna answered.
As the ladies descended, Talafal and Alex circled the landing area
checking for any signs of danger. Finding none, they swooped in and
landed. The travelers had set down in a clearing, and Lyin sighed as
she slid from her dragon's back. She glanced at Alex again and willed
her stomach to settle for a little bit.
Meanwhile, Alex remained mounted as he surveyed the clearing intently.
Satisfied that it was safe, he slid down to the ground.
"Me thinks you need to take Mylinna on more endurance flights, Lady
Lyin," a playful grin spread across his face as he spoke, "We have
hardly left the Warren, and all ready, we have stopped for a respite"
She snapped at him, "My dragon's just fine, Alexander, and I don't need
some pompous knight to tell me what I need to do." She puffed herself
up and shot a defiant look at her protector. Lyin wasn't sure why she
had said that or why she was angry with him, but she was suddenly
frustrated at herself for saying the things she had.
Alex on the other hand, laughed. Not a dismissive chuckle, but a hearty
mirthful belly laugh. He wiped a tear from his eye and composed
himself. Lyin wasn't sure what to make of Alex's response, but her mood
did soften, just a bit.
"I ask for your forgiveness, Lady Lyin, I just couldn't control
meself," he said. "I just imagined you in Duke Eagan's court scalding
him with that firebrand of a tongue of yours." Alex chuckled, "I hope
the good lad is ready."
She sat down on a rock, suddenly weary. Placing on arm around her
waist and running the other hand through her hair she sighed. She felt
like a silly school girl with a crush on the older, unattainable guy.
{Talk to him} Mylinna nudged her rider with her nose, causing Lyin to
fall forward onto her hands and knees on the grass. Alex came forward
quickly. He reached down and with a strong grip helped Lyin to her
feet.
"Are you ok," he asked as concern rippled across his face.
Lyin nodded, brushing grass from her. "Yes, I am, thank you." She
turned and glared at Mylinna. The dragon just lifted her nose and
snuggled against Talafal.
Alex watched the Dragons and smiled. "They certainly do like one
another."
Lyin nodded and gave a fleeting glance to Alex. She then looked back
to Mylinna. {Come on, lets go. It's obvious that he thinks of me as
nothing more than a friend, if that.}
{How do you know if you don't *tell him*} Mylinna snuggled against
Talafal. {If you don't I will}
Lyin's eyebrows shot up and she took a step to the dragons. "You
wouldn't dare..."
{My rider likes your rider, a lot} Mylinna purred to Talafal. {You
should tell him, since my rider can't seem to}
Lyin covered her face with her hands as Talafal looked back and forth
between Alex and Lyin. He then looked at Mylinna and back to Alex.
*Mylinna says there is something I should tell you, my rider*
Suspiciously Alex replied, *There is?*
*Ah . . . yes, Alex. You see . . .* the azure beast stuttered.
*You know how Mylinna and I like each other . . . and . . . um . . . I
think that . . . Lady Lyin . . . ah . . . feels the same . . . the same
way towards you . . . I think . . . at least Mylinna says she does.*
Alex laughed and shook his head. *You want to know what I think, old
friend.* he said, *I think that you two dragons are trying to play
matchmaker with your riders.* He patted Talafal on the snout, *Not that
I mind who you chose.* He looked over at Lyin who at the same moment
removed her hands from in front of her face. Their eyes met, and Lyin
quickly looked away. Alex wondered if the dragons weren't just playing
games.
"But how could she," he wondered as he continued to watch her. "She's
with child, and her lover and probably the father of her baby, is not
yet a full season in the grave. It wouldn't be proper . . ." Suddenly,
his thoughts were interrupted as she looked back at him. Immediately he
turned towards his dragon and began to check his harnesses.
As worked he thought, "I don't have time for this. Lovemaking is a
peacetime affair, and I must not waver from my oath. The blood of my
brother must be avenged."
As soon as he finished fiddling with the straps, he said aloud to his
dragon, "Ready?"
Not waiting for a reply, Alex climbed up into his saddle, and from atop
Talafal's back, he said to Lyin, "Are you rested enough to continue,
m'lady?"
Lyin nodded as she climbed back onto Mylinna. "Listen Alex...." She
didn't look directly at him, but more like at his feet. "I haven't said
anything to anyone about the baby. I would appreciate it if you...well
if you wouldn't say anything." She lifted her gaze to meet his.
Alex smiled and nodded. "Of course m'lady."
*There see* he said to Talafal as they took off again. *No more playing
matchmaker.*
Talafal and Mylinna just shared amused expressions as they glided next
to one another. The rest of the trip was quiet and uninterrupted, and
soon they were landing at the estate of Eagan.

Subject: [DL-W] She's Under My Thumb (JP)
Day 15
Late Morning
The massive door creaked open and the girl pushed her way through. The
creaking of the door only irritated her all the more. It only
confirmed
in her mind how slovenly and "low-class" the warren folk were, if they
considered a creaking door acceptable!
She sneered as she stomped off. She hadn't let anyone know she was
leaving. Let them look for her! Oh, they'd be sorry!
She was so busy imagining her father's panic at finding her gone that
she didn't at first notice the man coming toward her along the path
from
the warren. His face was equally angry and sullen.
He was almost upon her before she noticed that he was there. She
stopped, expecting him to bow and move to the side, but he stopped
directly in her path. His eyes narrowed as he waited, as if expecting
*her* to move out of his way!
Jennifer's ire almost got the better of her, but before snapping out
the
first thing that came to mind, she paused and took in the form before
her. His attire was of the finest cloth and finest cut. His fingers
were adorned with rings. He carried a carved walking stick. His fine
cloak was clasped at the neck with a large brooch with the largest ruby
she had ever seen. He was obviously someone of great importance!
Jennifer smiled. It was one of the most charming things about her,
that
smile, if it only reached her eyes.... But she lowered her lashes
coquettishly and curtsied. "My Lord, forgive me for not seeing you. I
was lost in thought."
As courtesy dictated he bowed, "Dear Lady, forgive me. I also was
preoccupied."
"Nothing at all to forgive," Jennifer nodded in understanding. She
looked up to judge his level of interest and saw that he did indeed
seem
distracted. "Is it something to do with the Prince's Ball?" She
ventured.
"Pardon?"
"The dilemma that you are so deeply pondering. Does it have to do with
the ball?" Jennifer asked.
"In a manner of speaking, yes. Though, the ball is not for the Prince,
but for Princess Arideregh."
Jennifer snorted, "Oh her. She isn't much of a Princess."
His eyes lit up, "Oh, do you know her then?"
"Oh, do I!" Jennifer's eyes sparkled with malicious glee.
"Well then... Miss..."
"Jennifer." She curtsied again, "Jennifer Fowler."
"M'Lady! My sincere apologies! I am Reginald, Earl of Ravencroft." He
chuckled inwardly. He hadn't heard that the old fox, Fowler, had
gotten
himself a new, young bride. Well, he would just have to see how much
Lady Jennifer knew. Then he smiled, almost warmly, "I was about to
have
my luncheon. If you have not yet dined, would you care to join me?"
Would she? Jennifer smiled, "I would be honored, kind sir." She took
his proffered arm and turned down the path toward the Earl's quarters.
His servants must have seen him coming or, knowing his habits, had his
luncheon already prepared. It was a simple matter to add an extra
chair
and place setting to the table. Jennifer was very impressed by their
efficiency, and silence. The servants in her father's house always
thought it was their duty to tell her how to sit and what to eat, not
to
mention carrying on an unseemly conversation with her father. The
Earl's servants knew their place and showed the proper respect to their
betters.
Jennifer preened under the Earl's attentions.
"So Lady Jennifer." Reginald spoke in his nicest of tones, the one he
reserved for wooing the ladies and gleaning what information he needed
at the time. She was a pretty little thing, and perhaps he could
arrange for some private dinings to further this new source of
information.
"Have you been to court yet?" he asked as he reached over and lightly
and very deliberately brushed up against her hand as he lifted her
glass
and then when it was filled, gently handing it to her, allowing their
fingers to briefly touch. He allowed his to linger just a hint more
than propriety allowed as he smiled at her. "I am sure I would have
remembered such a jewel to grace his Highness's court."
She blushed at his compliments, lowering her lashes demurely, "No, your
Grace, I have never been..." she swallowed quickly, as she had been
about to say she'd never been allowed to go to court, but covered it
with, "... never had the opportunity to go to court. It must be very
exciting." She looked up at him with a little envy shining in her
eyes.
Reginald smiled and saw the want swimming in her eyes. Yes, she would
be quite a little treasure trove of tidbit information he would use at
his convenience. Perhaps she would be able to help smooth things with
the Lady Arideregh and get him where he was destined to be.
"I am so sorry that you have not yet had that experience. I for one
can
not wait to have the pleasure AND honor of your acquaintance and
perhaps
if I am NOT too bold, to also have the honor to show you around." He
hinted at all the lovely sights she would be privy too.
"Perhaps if given a proper introduction....I might be able to smooth
your way there my dear...Perhaps Lord Fowler and I can have a
discussion
to the merits of one such as you gracing the King's Court."
Jennifer's eyes lit up at the possibilities. She was pleased at the
turn of the conversation. "Oh, would you? He might listen to one such
as yourself. I've been wanting to go since I turned 16, since the
Vaddon's girls all got to go at that age, but no. My father never
would
allow it and now...! But with your introduction, I'm sure it would be
all right."
Reginald smiled and nodded and slowly sipped his wine, moving in
deliberate movements that would illicit reactions from such a sweet
young thing.
He pondered just who her father was. Probably one of the local country
lords. He did have to admit he was surprised at the elder Fowler
taking
such a delicious peach.
She was so fresh and innocent, with the hint of country air about her.
Yes, he would love to be the one to introduce her into society and
enjoy
each new discovery with her. She could be trained into a fine ally,
well, after he had introduced her to many adventures and opened her
eyes
to what made the world tick.
He was very attentive of her during this next course and made every
opportunity to woo and entice her to reveal the information she had
hinted at earlier.
He just had to learn everything about his bride. She was the only
reason he was here. He would jump through the hoops that were set
before him....but regardless of what the others thought, he knew he
would win. he always did.
Smiling at her over another glass of wine he got a good look into her
yearning eyes, and he was reminded of someone. But who?
"So tell me Lady Jennifer, just where have you been hiding all these
years? Why when I bring you back with me to Court, the King will
certain award me with the highest honors, for bringing to him...such a
national treasure."
Her cheeks reddened, but not entirely from the compliments. She had
been allowed to drink wine since her birthday, but never this quantity.
"Why, my dear Earl, I have been here all along. It's a shame you
didn't
come before now. It's been ever so dull."
Reginald chuckled warmly. His deep rich tones echoing through out the
room.
"If I had known such a treasure existed in this barren spot of the
Kingdom, I would have gathered all the knights and rode out to rescue
you from such dreariness." He toasted her and then bowed his head
towards her.
"So, you were raised in this area." he added smoothly. "Perhaps you
know all the history of this region."
All of his compliments and the wine had loosened Jennifer's tongue.
She
began to tell him all about the recent history of the White River
domain. Of course when she began to tell him about dear, departed
brother Jason's death and the "evils" of the warren folk and how they
had such a hold over the lords of the domain, the tears began to flow.
"Jared killed him, do you know? And I hate him! I don't know what Ari
sees in him! But then... I can't imagine what he sees in her either!
Did you ever see such poor manners? And her being a Princess? Hah!"
Reginald covered his surprise at this new bit of information. If her
brother killed her other brother, and if she was a Fowler....that meant
she was...the daughter!
Interesting he thought. This just might work after all, even better.
For that meant she was the young innocent sister of that bothersome
Wingleader that HIS bride watched. The one that had the audacity to
attempt to speak to him just this morning, telling him of all her
special.......Reginald looked to take in the young child before him.
Again, she was a pretty little thing, and he was very sure she was very
head strong, which meant he would be able to use and enjoy her, and
with
luck pass her off to one of his underlings, and she would be happy to
go.
"Yes, Your father, Lord Fowler." he corrected himself. "I would so
very
much like the honor of meeting him properly and be given the
opportunity
of an acquaintance with him... and all your family my dear."
He reached over the table and took her hand in his. "I am grieved to
hear of your terrible loss." He lifted her hand to his lips and kissed
them softly at the top of her knuckles.
He leaned back into his chair and sat quietly, to ponder how he needed
to speak next. She did not like the lady Arideregh, so perhaps he
needed to find out why, before he could glean more information from
her.
"Well, the Lady Arideregh was not given the proper training as you were
my dear, she is to be pitied more than scorned."
"Oh, yes, one can certainly see that..." Jennifer sneered,. "Maybe
that's what it is between her and Jared -- he pities her." She
laughed,
but it was a nasty little laugh. "I was so embarrassed for them both,
and all I can say is that I'm glad that I was the only other person at
dinner when he brought her home to meet father..."
Reginald sat up gracefully and hid his desire to probe deeper quicker.
This little kitten definitely had claws, and not afraid to use them..
Well, well, she would make her own way at Court, and beware any who
stood in her way.
"So Lady Arideregh has been to your estates." he muttered softly
although making it sound like an off handed comment. "Interesting. I
am sure she found them quaint."
Reginald wondered why she had been brought to the estates. Was it to
gain the old man's approval. Lord Fowler certainly knew the history of
Lady Arideregh, and perhaps knew of her worth.
"Well, if must have been a nice little dinner." Reginald replied. "Was
it business or pleasure?" he asked nonchalantly, hoping to see if she
knew the reason behind it. Not that it made much of a difference.
Lady
Arideregh belonged to him, and he was not going to leave empty handed.
Jennifer bristled when it seemed that after the formalities of
inquiring
over her comforts, all the Earl was interested in was discussing Ari.
"Maybe Jared just wanted to show off. I didn't stick around for the
after dinner conversation. But..." She leaned forward in a
conspiratorial manner, glancing left and right to make sure the
servants
were out of earshot, before she whispered, "I saw them together in the
gardens."
Reginald again hid his ire and surprise rather well, not that he did
not
want to hear about HIS bride dallying with some lowly lord of the
country, someone who turned his back on his holdings and heritage to
step down to a commoner's level and chose to live like a savage in a
hole in the side of the mountain and hang with beasts of burdens.
"Ooh, do tell, my dear." he leaned into her to appear like he was part
of the conspiracy to keep such secrets from the likes of anyone else.
"Surely they did not compromise the hospitality of your distinguished
father." He smiled sweetly at her.
"If you mean were they..." She turned a pretty shade of pink, "Well...
if they didn't then, I'm sure they have by now. You've heard about the
warrenfolk! They act like.... They have no shame what-so-ever!"
She tried to hide her embarrassment in a swallow of wine, but being
that
she was still used to only taking little sips, she choked instead and
began to cough. She was mortified. How extremely unladylike! Her
large eyes blinked back tears as she pressed the linen serviette to her
mouth.
Reginald nodded to one of his servants who stepped forward and removed
the empty carafe of wine.
"Please forgive me for upsetting your delicate sensibilities." Reginald
rose and made his way to her side. He helped her stand and with his
arm
around her waist escorted her to the sitting room, where he walked her
until she appeared to settle down, and then he helped her sit down,
with
him next to her on the small divan.
"I had NO idea, that they lived in such conditions," he sounded
appalled. Well, that part was not play acting. He was appalled. He
was also furious at Lady Cicely who had done this to him. She had
deliberately played her last card and sent her own daughter to live and
dwell in such a base domicile that she would be considered ruined.
Well, he was not going to stand for it, and with a bit of tutoring, and
some isolation, when he finally brought her to court, no one could say
or would say a word out of turn.
"Please forgive me for upsetting you with such a topic of conversation,
my dear." Reginald cooed to her. "I hope this will not hamper your
desire to secure my proper introduction to your father."
Jennifer smiled and nodded. All was not lost by her indelicate
conversation. The Earl might still take her to court. Wasn't he so
elegant, she thought. "Yes, of course. Even though my father has been
to court, it has been some time, really... since before mother died."
She felt the tears again sting her eyes. She was sure that if mother
had lived, she would have been sure to have her only daughter
introduced
at court. Jennifer didn't really remember her mother well, but she
often dreamed about what she would have been like. She imagined her
giving parties and throwing balls, and being the most perfect lady. If
only her mother had lived.
Reginald noticed the tears, and although he was sure she was sincere in
them, he hesitated just a moment, and then patting her hand placed her
head against his shoulder to give her comfort.
Inside he was fuming. He was furious that he, and the King had been
duped. He allowed this quiet moment to soothe the young lady and hoped
creating the bond he was hoping to use to gain access to Lady
Arideregh.
It appeared that this bothersome wingleader was more than he seemed.
How was he to discover the truth? Most would not talk to the likes of
him, they would stay closed mouthed to protect their leader.
He needed to keep this one close enough, and occupied enough with
thoughts of court, so she would share what news and information she
would pick up.
There must be someone who could confirm what this child had just
confessed. "You seem rather distressed my dear, perhaps I have over
fatigued you." Reginald replied. "Let me escort you back to your
quarters so that you may rest up for the evening's festivities."
Jennifer's lower lip jutted out in a delicate pout, "Oh couldn't I
just... rest here... for a little while?" She really wanted her father
to worry just a bit about her.
Reginald saw into the little game she was playing. He did not have
time
to wet nurse the child. He smiled and then got an idea, and perhaps if
it worked out well, he would be granted with more information about his
bride.
"I think perhaps we need to return you home, your father must be
worried
for you. We have been gone quite some time." he softly cajoled her.
"IF you were under my care and protection my dear, I would never let
you
out of my sight. A beautiful woman such as yourself.....you can't
trust
the others to care for you as you deserve." He added with ease.
In her case it was true, he would not let her out of his sight. She
was
far too smart, beautiful and calculating to be trusted. When she ever
learned to use those natural talents, she would be a force worth
reckoning.
He rose from his seat next to her and the servant was there, holding a
lovely wrap to keep her warm on their return walk to her quarters.
"Here you go my dear...." he replied laying the beautiful garment
around
her shoulders. "To help you from the afternoon air, so you will not be
too tired or ill to join me for the evening meal." Reginald invited
her
with a smile, knowing she would jump at the chance
Her eyes lit up, "It would be a pleasure to dine with you again, your
Grace. I rarely have anyone that I can talk to who... well, who
understands." She accepted the wrap and waited for the servant to open
the door. She reasoned that perhaps she had been away long enough for
her father to worry and she gloated a bit at the thought.
The Earl, himself, escorted her to the quarters that were always kept
in
ready for her father. She hated them. So dark! So clammy! But she
made the best of it.
When the door was opened by her father, she was disgusted and
embarrassed. Didn't he at least have the decency of sending a servant
ahead of him?
"Jennifer! Where have you been?!"
"I was ..." but her petulant response was cut off as the Earl smoothly
answered.
"With me."
The Earl smiled and escorted her out the door, and walked with her
slowly down the lane towards where he has stumbled upon her.
"I have really enjoyed this little tete' te tete'" he said. "I wish to
thank you for brightening my day." he replied.
Again, it was not a misleading statement....she had brighten his day,
and given him another avenue to Lady Arideregh.
"I hope thy father is not too upset with my keeping company with your
all afternoon."
She was thrilled that the Earl, himself, escorted her all the way to
the
quarters that were always kept in ready for her father. She hated
them.
So dark! So clammy! But she made the best of it.
When the door was opened by her father, she was disgusted and
embarrassed. Didn't he at least have the decency of sending a servant
ahead of him?
"Jennifer! Where have you been?!"
"I was ..." but her petulant response was cut off as the Earl smoothly
answered.
"With me." The Earl smiled and bowed to Lord Fowler.
"Greetings my Lord, I stumbled upon your lovely daughter....and we
enjoyed a brief luncheon together...." he studied the elderly man.
"With the proper chaperones of course."
The older man looked a bit perplexed, "Well, then I owe you my
gratitude. Earl... Reginald is it?" He looked at Jennifer with a
slightly raised eyebrow.
She knew she had overstepped her bounds, but... it had been so much
fun!
She smiled the innocent, little girl smile at her father, "Oh, and it
was such a nice lunch, father. So much better than that awful stuff
they serve at the dining hall."
"Jennifer...," He shook his head, but turned back to the Earl, "Would
you do me the honor of coming inside?"
Reginald smiled but declined the invitation, "I'm sorry, My Lord, I
have
some urgent matters that need my attention. But I would be honored if
you and your charming daughter would be my guest this evening for
dinner? Unless you have other plans?"
"Oh, no, we don't have any other plans!" Jennifer chirped happily.
Lord Fowler looked trapped but then smiled graciously in return, "We
would be delighted, Your Grace."
"It's been a pleasure," Reginald said as he bowed over Jennifer's hand
before shaking her father's. He turned to leave in a much better mood
than he had been in earlier.
