Subject: [DL-D] - First Stone
Day 106
Past Midnight
Searchlings Barracks
[SNIP]
Weya slowly made her way out of the barracks and was met by Akety who
hugged
her and led her to a healer, who began to treat the spattering burns
she had
received.
[END SNIP]
Weya sat on a short stool numb to that around her as she tried to sort
through what had happened, and the significance of it. She had arrived
dropping from the skies with those hideous creatures on their tail.
Had it
not been the magnificent flying ability of Jacks, they would not have
made
it this far.
Now she sat here, so much changed since she first arrived here. She
had
made a few friends, and was beginning to finally settle in. To learn
the
ropes and figure out what her place among the throng of people that
made up
her new home.
So much different than the solitary life she had led. She felt the
soothing
hands of the healer apply soft pressure and dab the numbing salve that
stung
and tingled then took away the throbbing pain and heat from the
multiple
splattering spray of burns that dotted her face, hands, neck and chest.
Weya was aware that a larger crowd had begun to swell as the news of
what
had happened here tonight. It was like she was in the eye of the
storm.
She was isolated in the silence that surrounded her. All around her she
felt
the slowly pressing forward of people, voices and fear.
Yes, fear, she was aware of this as well. Her fear had slipped into
the
background after she had begun to feel safe here. Life moved on, as it
always did, and Weya had stepped into the flow and gone with the
current.
With the return of the night terrors, and dreams, she had managed to
find a
place to reside and not allow the fear that dogged her steps in.
But..tonight her fear had returned. And she knew it was not going
anywhere.
She was now faced with the realization that these creatures were
perhaps
stronger than the dragons.
These creatures were evil incarnate. These were from the bowels of
hell and
sent to punish them. How did one fight and defeat that which was sent
from
the gods? These were sent to teach lessons and meet out punishment.
Slowly the sounds of the night returned and opened themselves to her.
Now
she could hear the soft words of the healer, and even Akety answering
questions to those near by. Then the multitudes of voices were softly
added
to the mix. She heard the different emotions behind the voices. She
heard
the grief and pain, the terror and anger. She heard the orders being
barked
out as those who were in control were also trying to quell the crowd,
send
them back to their beds, and get a handle on what had just happened.
Weya realized people were pressing closer to her and she looked up and
was
surprised to see that she was alone. She slowly stood and was surprised
how
stiff and sore she was. She took the op****tunity to survey the scene
before
her.
The look of fear and concern was etched on every face she saw. She
wondered
what look she now wore. She was still rather shaken from the dream she
had
been having. She could still feel the sensation of that tongue on her
body,
and she wondered if she looked there would be some sort of sign.
"I DON'T BELIEVE YOU!" an anguished cry went out over the night.
"LET ME SEE HIM!" the voiced screamed out.
Weya was moved by the grief and shock that reverberated in each
syllable.
Weya made her way to the voice, and slipped through the crowd that had
begun
near the doorway of what use to be the barracks.
"That is not possible at this time." Sybil replied simply. She turned
to
return to her many duties and tasks that needed to be handled at this
time.
"I DEMAND IT" the woman screamed at her. "HAVE YOU NO FEELINGS?"
Sybil turned back with an amused smirk on her face. "I enjoy many
feelings.."she began arching her brow with interest as she saw Weya's
face
in the front of the crowd. "But those would not help at the present."
She
returned her cool gaze to the woman who stood before her.
The woman stood as if slapped, so stunned that she should have been
given
such a response. She had heard of the low base animalistic tendencies
and
behaviors of these people; but to be so blatantly open and crude about
it.
Her fury at the situation that life had thrust her in suddenly erupted
and
she looked to where her gaze had rested before returning to her.
Sybil feeling the conversation was at an end, turned back to that which
she
was doing and went about her business. The woman however was not done,
and
if she could not prick any sort of remorse of mourning from the likes
of
that one...she would find someone else to unleash her grief.
Weya watched the altercation between the two women, and sadly
understood
both sides. She had known grief and loss, to be bereft and alone. But
altho Weya did not feel comfortable in the presence of Sybil she too
was
right. Life went on, and if you stopped it was over. You too might as
well
be dead.
Weya was turning to leave the scene, and perhaps find out where Akety
went,
and to see if she knew how Dante was doing. She had been so worried
when he
took the patrol to help out another member on the wing.
She had not wanted to be selfish and demand that they find someone
else.
She understood the need and Dante seemed insistent. Now she feared for
him,
and hoped he was well. This was the time she wished she had a Dragon,
to be
able to chat with Jacks and know they were safe.
"YOU!" she heard the woman' voice about the same time she felt her hand
on
her shoulder spinning her around to face her.
The grief and anguish was evident on the young woman's face, but her
eyes
flashed her rage.
"Me?" Weya spoke out in surprise. She did not know this person, nor
had she
ever seen her before.
"YOU BROUGHT THEM" she accused. "MAYBE WE SHOULD FEED YOU TO THEM" she
screeched at Weya.
Weya blinked in surprise. She was not use to having to deal with such
things. Weya had no words of comfort for her. Somehow, she realized
that no
matter what she said, the woman would continue to berate her and accuse
her
of everything.
Weya had nothing to offer the women to work through her grief, so she
decided to give her the gift of allowing her to blame her for
everything in
her broken life.
"YOU HAVE NOTHING TO SAY?" the woman yelled her outrage that she would
be
given no satisfaction.
"What can I say?" Weya offered softly. "Nothin I say can bring him
back,
and nothin I did could have stopped what happened."
A howl of outrage and a heavy slap across her cheek as Weya stood her
ground
in silence. She felt the warmth of blood in her mouth, and her eyes
stung
with tears from the shock of the slap.
Sybil hearing the slap turned back to see what was going on. Seeing
that it
was Weya who was involved, Sybil stayed back. She was very interested
to
see how her little huntress handled such a situation.
The woman howled her grief and turned to the gathering crowd and began
to
cry out her accusations. She ranted and raved about how the
dragonriders
did not save her family, and only by the grace of the gods had she and
her
brother managed to survive. To have been taken here; and then left
behind,
only to have her brother foully murdered and those who proclaimed to be
her
protector, allowed him to die.
Many in the crowd began to agree with some of her statements. It was
how
they felt as well, although they had not had the courage before to
speak out
against that which they did not understand.
Sybil sensing the growing unruliness of the crowd sent word and within
moments more dragon guards and riders appeared to begin to quell the
crowd
and get them to where they would not be in her way to examine this new
invasion and to protect her Warren.
"I DEMAND SATISFACTION!" the young woman screamed and grabbed Weya as
if to
shake it from her.
Sybil motioned the others not to respond. She wanted to see how Weya
would
handle this first. She was very interested that Weya did not seem to be
upset by this altercation. Weya did not have a chance to even respond
before
another pushed her way to the front.
"LEAVE her alone!" Akety demanded. "YOU have NO right to blame her for
this!" She spat at the woman and pushed her away from Weya.
"She has done nothing to you..she was almost killed too!" Weya was
surprised at the ferocity of Akety's hot and heated words. She could
hear
the tears in them as well. She had not realized that Akety had been
worried
for her.
This was something new for Weya, and she was not use to it. She had
been
alone for so long, she was just learning to accept the fact that there
were
others who cared about and worried over her.
"Akety, tis alright." Weya whispered to her while placing her hand on
her
shoulder, to show her she was ok, and it did not matter what the woman
said.
"She is grieved."
"She has NO right Weya, none!" Cried Akety. "She is not the only one
who
could lose someone dear tonight!"
Weya realized she was speaking of Dante. DANTE! Weya's thoughts flew
to
him and wondered how he was. He was in more danger than she had been.
Weya
felt bad that Akety had been so worried for both of them.
"NO RIGHT!" the woman continued hotly. "I HAVE EVERY RIGHT!" she
screamed
at the two of them. "YOU STOLE EVERYTHING FROM ME!" She broke down
and
sobbed slowly slipping to the ground.
Weya knelt down to try to comfort her. "I be sorry that your brother
was
taken." Weya tried to soothe the weeping woman. She looked up to see
who
spoke and her eyes caught glimpse of the charms and amulets Weya wore
around
her neck.
She reached out and grabbed them, dragging Weya's head closer to her.
Weya
startled at the movement relaxed so that they would not break and open
herself to the evil spirits around her. She had never taken then off
since
they had been placed on her.
Seeing the flush of worry in her eyes, the woman grinned unrepentantly
and
yanked hard sending the beads, charms, amulets and other parts of her
trinkets to fly and scatter in the dark.
Weya gave out a cry of alarm, and could not understand one who held
such
loathing for another.
"WITCH!" she called out pointing to Weya as she pulled away and began
to
crawl to get as far away from the evil she believed Weya carried
within
her.
Akety shocked and angered at the woman's deeds and words sprung forward
and
was held fast by a firm hand. The sound of steel being released from
its
sheath could be heard as the crowd suddenly stilled.
Sybil, with a venomous look etched on her face pressed the blade into
the
woman's chest and stepped between then two combatants.
"ENOUGH!" Sybil's deadly tone hissed at the woman. "I will hear NO
more
such talk as this! YOU are not the only one here, who has lost loved
ones!"
Sybil motioned to the guards to begin dispersing the crowd. She looked
back
down to the frightened woman. "This ends here." Sybil replied.
"If I hear of such talk again, it will be dealt with in the swiftest
possible manner." Sybil warned as she sheathed her weapon as quickly as
she
had drawn it; the sound echoing the finalization of her threat. The
crowd
thinned quickly. Turning towards Weya she winked at her. As she walked
away, she retorted wickedly. "Unless, us witches take matters into our
own
hands first!"
"Is there a problem here?" A voice of authority drifted down to the
thinning crowd. Everyone turned to greet the Warren Lady as she slowly
made
her way from the shadows.
"I think we have everything handled my sweet." Sybil purred
licentiously and
an even more mischievously wicked grin. She laughed at the shock look
on
the duchess' face and once again Sybil turned back to her duties and
with a
snap of fingers began to secure the perimeter of the barracks.
[TAG Eddie - SO just HOW much did Thea hear and witness?]
Weya still on her knees waiting for the crowd to disperse, trying to
not
show her panic that was rising quickly. Heart pounding and deep seated
fears overwhelming her; the tears to her eyes; she slowly picked up and
gathered the beads, trinkets, charms and amulets that had been torn
from
her.
Akety knelt down and helped her gather up what had been destroyed.
Neither
spoke a word, Akety because she did not know what to say, and Weya too
afraid to show the deep emotions that coursed through her. There was
no way
she would show a sign of weakness, and especially to those still
milling
around her. She heard the soft gentle voice of the Warren Lady and
hurried
through the last bit and gathered all that she could find. She vowed
to
return in the morning to see if there were any she missed.
Akety helped her up and gave her a hug. She could see the hurt in her
eyes,
and felt her anger rise again. Akety remembered the harsh words she
had
hurled and thrown in her direction, and she hoped that no one had ever
taken
them serious.
"Weya."Akety spoke softly with her hand on her shoulder. "Dante..."
she
looked at the sudden panic look that washed over her face as the color
drained from it as well.
Weya tried to speak, but no words came.
"He is alright." Akety finished. "He is in the Medical Center." Akety
put
her arm easily around her and ****ged her in the way of the center.
"Let's
go and see how he is doing."
Weya nodded and made a quick look around and seeing nothing, walked
with
her. Again neither one spoke to each other, both lost in their own
thoughts.
* * * * *
Medical Center
Akety took charge as they entered the center and within moments both
were
taken to where Dante lay. They both stepped into the room and with the
soft
light saw that he was ok, altho the stench of battle still clung to the
room.
Akety hung back letting Weya move forward first so she could speak with
him.
Weya moved close and realized from his breathing he was sleeping,
peacefully, and did not need to be disturbed.
"He be sleepin." She whispered back to Akety a hint of a smile in her
voice.
"If'n ya don't mind I would rather stay here for a time."
Akety smiled and nodded as she walked up and joined her. She took a
good
look at her brother and was glad he was ok. She looked over at Weya
and
sensed a lost quality about her. Maybe she had been more shaken by the
incident than she had first thought.
"You stay here as long as you need. I need to go help with organizing
the
Dining Hall for the new searchling barracks." Akety replied.
Weya nodded and then slowly looked to her to see if what she had heard
had
been correct.
"Dinin Hall?" Weya asked in surprise.
"Yeah, Sybil wishes to keep the trainees together and keep you working
as a
team, so she commandeered one end of the Dining Hall until we can make
a new
one." Akety explained.
"I'm sure it won't take long to get you all back into a new home."
Akety smiled and hugged her. She leaned over and kissed her brother on
the
forehead and patted his hand. With that Akety left Weya to sit with
Dante
while she returned to her new duties and responsibilities.
Weya pulled a chair up to the side of the bed and sat quietly next to
Dante.
She sat quietly studying his features and remembering everything they
had
experienced together. She tried to keep her calm, but lost to the
battle of
her tears when her mind rested on the broken amulets. Some had been
made
for her as a child from her grandmother. She touched the pouch that
held
all the broken components and softly weep for all her losses.
"Ahh baby.don't cry.I'm ok." Dante mumbled softly as he reached out
his
hand to touch hers. Weya hearin his voice looked up only to see him
smile
briefly and his eyes slowly close as he slipped back into the dark
world of
his dreams.
[TAG- Katie - feel free to have the boys tell of their adventures with
the
creatures, or Akety as she goes to begin to organize the trainees and
if
Dante wishes to awaken or sleep thru the night.]
[SUMMARY]
Weya is treated for her burns and hears an altercation with an angry
woman.
She goes to see what is wrong, and ends up part of that altercation.
The
woman accuses dragonriders of not protecting them. After harsh words,
breaking of Weya's amulets, a hint of threat from Sybil and the arrival
of
the Warren Lady, the crowds dissipate and Weya picks up her broken
amulets.
She and Akety head to the medical center to check up on Dante. Weya
chooses
to stay there with him and await his awakening.
