Subject: [VAMPIRE] - Dead Reckoning

Day 16
Late Evening

Josie slowly made her way back to her department and found that her
thoughts
kept moving to the night before and the ritual she had gone through.
She
gathered the message from Nicky to meet him later, so they could talk.
She
chuckled, for she knew he wanted more than just talking.

She made her way to the lab and began to enter the data she had
collected,
and noted where each piece was being tested, and for what. She was
surprised with how easy it was to get lost in the minute detail of her
work,
and still have a small portion left to slowly analyze all the events
from
the night before.

Josie was good in the lab, but her forte was of course walking through
the
crime scene and finding the evidence there. She did not know how to
explain
it other than she could talk to the dead. They were always there,
waiting
for her, and always a bit surprised that she could see them, and
listened to
them.

She always promised them she would make sure their families knew what
had
really happened, and it did make her feel like she was doing something
good
to counter balance the evil that had taken place.

"Josie" Max spoke as he entered the lab breaking her concentration.

"Hey Max, how ya doin?" Josie smiled warmly and turned her full
attention to
him. Max smiled and said nothing; he knew that little gesture spoke
volumes.

"I'm doing fine, just checking up on my lead investigator and see how
she is
doing. That was pretty grisly." He commented softly.

"Yeah it was." Josie chuckled. "I've seen worse tho." She admitted. "I
will
admit this place held a darkness that I have only felt once before."

Max nodded and went to her and embraced her softly. "I know things
have
been rough lately, lots of pressure with both work and
family...issues."

Josie pulled away and studied him intently. "Are ya askin me to step
down?"
she asked softly.
"Only if you feel you need to do so." he replied. "I have full
confidence
in you and your abilities; as does the rest of the team." Max
explained. "I
just know that you have been torn and I am worried that you are
allowing
your search for the truth behind your mother's death to lead you to
places
you should not go."

"I am safe Max." she replied. "I have a..friend, someone who too is
searching for the answers for his family. We will watch each others
back."
She answered and suddenly smiled at the thought of Armande.

"Besides" she grinned and nudged him. "I always have you and Nicky to
watch
over me too." She added trying to lighten the mood. She saw the
seriousness
of his countenance.

"I promise to be careful Max." She vowed.

"I do not wish to be the one called to your crime scene." He spoke
softly as
he tried to keep his voice from cracking with the deep emotion he felt.

Josie teared up and nodded. "I give you my word." She whispered in his
ear
as she hugged him. How lucky she was to have such a dear friend,
almost
like a big brother or father figure, something she had been sadly
lacking in
her life.

Max broke up the embrace and turned his attention back to evidence
before
them. "Almost done?" he asked as he looked over the notes and sign in
sheets.

"Yeah, got it all cataloged and sent off for the tests, and the first
report
of my findings is ready to go on your desk. Why?" she asked.

"You have been requested to be a police liaison for this case and
another
that was found a few nights ago in another parish." Max replied simply.

"Me? You want me? You know I am not good at this kind of stuff Max."
Josie
said trying to hide the panic in her voice. "You know I don't work
well
with the department."

Max chuckled and grinned. "You are one of the favorites, altho some do

think you are...well different." He added as he leaned forward to get
closer
to her.

"Nick requested you." He whispered. "I Okayed it, so you will not be
around
A.J. and the remaining investigation, so you are free to go, check out
and
report back here with updates to what is going on."
Josie laughed and nodded. "You are the greatest Max." she chuckled and

began to neaten up her work station and file the reports where they
belonged, so she could go join Nicky and see just what case he had.

Similar humm, she thought, interesting.

Within the hour Josie had completed the paperwork and found herself
driving
along the major fare way as she let the beat of the music find its way
into
her as it matched the beat of her heart, flowing through her veins.

Following the directions Max had given her Josie snaked her way through
the
crowded streets and thorough fares and made her way to the precinct
that
Nick worked at. She parked her vehicle and went up the steps and went
to
find her new partner.

Within the hour they were both walking out and headed to her car. Josie

hopped in behind the wheel, and moments later they were on their way to
the
scene of the crime that haunted Nick.

Both lost in their thoughts as they cruised through the darkness making

their way closer and closer yet another doorway of evil.

He was not happy that he had to drag her into this. It was the only
chance
he had to catch whoever was slowly terrorizing the city. Josie was his

secret weapon, and having watched her before; she truly was the only
way he
could think of to solve this case. He flashed back to the first time
he had
witnessed her performance at a crime scene. She had truly creeped him
out
that first time.

Then meeting her; getting the chance to speak with her. He found her
so
refreshing and different; with many commonalities.

He still could remember the surreal aura that appeared around her as
she
moved like a ghost through the scene and told them in a strange off
world
voice what had happened. Just thinking of it could still bring goose
bumps.

"Everythin ok?" Josie asked as she noticed how quiet he had gotten as
they
pulled up to the crime scene.

"Pardonnez-moi Mon Che`re." Nick whispered softly while bringing his
hand
up to touch and then to caress her cheek. Josie closed her eyes and
leaned
into his touch.

"Forgive ya for what Nicky?" she asked softly as she turned to face
him.

"Nicky? What is goin on?" she asked now concerned. He was just...not
like
this. What was going on? Both he and Max seemed so afraid for her.
What
did they see or know that she did not?

"I should not have allowed you to step into the shadows. I can feel
him
near Mon Che`re."

"Feel who Nicky?" she asked wondering just what was going on. "Nicky."
she
begged. "Talk to me."

"I can feel him breathing down my neck; he hides in the shadows just
out of
my sight. He watches; he waits. He is here, for you" Nick finally
spoke.

"Who is HE Nicky?" She asked gently. She was curious now. Who did
Nick
fear? In all the years she had known him, she had never seen him this
deeply concerned.

"Le Diable." He whispered softly. Josie took his hand and kissed it
gently.

"Nicky, ya worry so; there is nothin in the shadows to harm me.."She
tried
to console him.

"Crainte non Mon Aime`." She whispered leaning in to gently kiss him.
His
response was quick and passionate as they fell into one another. After
the
urgency subsided, they were both able to pull away and regain their
composure.

"Well, I guess I need to show you why you are here." He stated and got
out
of the car.

Josie followed suit and shivered as she stepped close to the yellow
police
line. A voice pierce the darkness as Nick identified who they were and
they
were waved on. Lifting the yellow tape Josie moved into the perimeter
of
the crime scene. Instantly she felt the same evil she had felt when
they
found the macabre scene in that graveyard. She gasped softly as her
senses
were assaulted by all that had happened. Nick was at her side in an
instant.

"We don't have to do this Mon Che`re." he whispered. "I can find
another
way."

"No, it is fine." She whispered back. "I was..just not prepared is
all."

Nick slowly released her as he watched her slip into the shadow lands.
He
cursed and berated himself, for using her in such a way. But, these
murders, or rituals, or what ever they were needed to stop. They seem
to be
building up to something horrific, if he could be part of preventing
it,
then he did need to use everything at his disposal.

Josie stepped into the crime scene and felt as if she was sucked down a
long
tunnel and found herself in the eerie grey of the shadow lands. She
stood in
the eerie silence of this place and heard the cries of those who had
been
banished here.

Slowly and methodically she walked through the scene; lost in the dance
of
the violent memories that swirled around her, calling to her, sharing
with
her, all that had transpired. The cries of those left behind, trapped
and
lost here, unable to fathom what had occurred, and asking for
absolution.

She felt the coldness as they grasped for her, begging her to release
them.
The voices clamoring for her attention, Josie gasped in horror as she
saw
them all in various degrees of decomposition.

Nick stayed one step behind her as he made mental and written notes of
all
she uttered. He had watched her before, and knew that she spoke in
half
sentences and she would be able to fill in the blanks later.

He also watched her closer this time, for even he could feel the depth
of
the evil that resided here, and how strong the pull of it was. Every
time he
moved to stop her, to pull her back to him, she blurted out something
that
he needed, and so he continued to allow her to walk with the dead.

How long she walked the grey misty shadow lands she did not know, all
she
knew was that something so evil had touched this place, that nothing
would
ever be able to cleanse it away. She felt her very essence being
drained by
such resonate evil and carnage.

With each step closer to the center of the..shrine...altar! She cried
out
the words as she realized she had been in such a place before. Flooded
with
memories of a past she tried so hard to keep at bay, she got lost in
them as
they surrounded her and enveloped her, while the remnants of what had
happened in this place pressed down on her as well.

Feeling like the very life was being sucked from her and felt her self
grow
weak and her knees buckle before it registered that she was going
down. As
she fell towards the darkness she felt the safe place she had the night

before. She relaxed and let herself go.

"Mon Che`re!" Nick shouted as he rushed to her side just as she
crumpled to
the ground.

Nick held her tightly within his arms and shook with fear and rage over
what
he had allowed. He never should have insisted she do this, not at
night,
not when the spirits were so strong. He should have taken her home,
and
worked up a plan to try this.

Josie's eyelashes fluttered as her body arched up as her body gasped
trying
to catch a breath. Nick buried his face in her neck and whispered soft
loving words and begged for her forgiveness. He promised her the moon
and
vowed she would never have to do anything like this ever again.

"Nicky..."her soft voice tickled his ear. "I am fine Nicky." She said
stronger this time.

Nick helped her up and hovered close to her. "Pardonnez-moi Mon
Che`re." he
softly begged, his voice cracking with deep emotion.

Josie huddled close to him and found it hard to speak, as if the words
had
been left behind in the shadows. She smiled weakly and nodded and let
him
lead her from the scene, back to her car.

"I will be right back Mon Che`re," he whispered and softly kissed her
forehead.

Josie nodded and leaned back in the seat and tried to figure out just
what
had happened. She had never had anything like that happen before. She

could still feel the pounding of her heart as her body tried to calm
the
raging river within.

She had felt the fear and the terror of not just that night...but of a
night
long ago. She felt the pounding in her head and the beginning of the
headache that came after. She closed her eyes to try to quell it, and
took
a few deep cleansing breathes to let the sense of calm wash over her.

When Nick returned to the car she was gone.
