Subject: [Vampire-WW] Befriending
Scene: University of New Orleans, Night 8
Karen pulled into the parking lot, though her eyes were on the woman
walking
up the short flight of steps to the library doors. She leaned back in
her
seat and turned off the engine. Surveillance was new to Karen, though
she
certainly had the senses for it. Auspex came naturally to her, and she
could
see auras and read minds in a much shorter span of time than her own
sire
did.
But how to handle this assignment. She had remained unseen for now, but
for
how long was that likely to last? She had no skills in hiding in
shadows, so
logically it was only a matter of time before this Lindsey Daniels
noticed
she was being followed.
Which suggested that she couldn't sit in her car night on end.
Inside, she found Lindsey on the second floor, sitting herself down at
a
table with a few books in her arms. Pondering her plan, she spent a few
minutes scanning the shelves, pulling off a couple of books. She
glanced up
at a mirror, angled to show what lay beyond the corner. Karen hoped she
looked casual enough in a simple black skirt and tight-fitting black
sweater. She appeared young enough to pass for a senior student, not
that
age seemed to matter much in education these days.
Satisfied, she walked over to the table, and after a feigned pause, sat
down
across from Lindsey. She set out the two books before her, both on
poltergeist activity. Taking a moment, she pulled the elastic free from
her
hair and retied her black hair back into a pony-tail.
Karen gave a small grin when Lindsey finally glanced up at her. "Sorry
to
disturb you." she said in a hushed tone, despite there not being anyone
else
in the vicinity.
"It's ok." Lindsey gave the stranger a little smile, not familiar with
her
at all. But then, there were so many students, classes from 6 am until
10 or
11 at night most of the time that it wasn't unusual.
Eyes automatically drawn to the two books in front of the woman,
Lindsey's
smile got a little bigger.
"Interested in the paranormal?" she asked. "Poltergeist activity has
many
interesting theories behind it. Who'd you pick up there?" A quick flick
of
Lindsey's finger indicated the two books.
"Oh, I'm not too sure ..." Karen began. "I'm just starting to research
it.
Just a generic encyclopedia type, and something by Doctor Griffin. I'm
afraid I don't know much about it ... them, really, but it sounds like
you
have an idea or two?"
Lindsey laughed softly. "You could say that." she answered. "I'm a
member of
a group of Paranormal researchers and investigators, kinda their go-to
gal
for research, information and historical data." she explained. "And if
you
name the place in this city, I can give you the info you need. Not sure
if
it's a hobby or an obsession though."
"Wow." Karen replied with a smile. "Seems I found the right person to
share
a table with, then." She went to open the encyclopedia, then paused and
looked back up at Lindsey. "Maybe you could help me ... if you have the
time, of course."
"Sure." Lindsey closed the book on local family histories she'd found
and
smiled at the girl. She could check out the book anyway and it wasn't
like
she was in a hurry to return to the transcribing project she was
supposed to
be working on. "What did you need help with?"
"Well," Karen began, pu****ng aside the book, "I'm not entirely sure
that it
is something like poltergeists, but something is definitely going on in
my
home. I started noticing that things were being moved. I was pretty
sure
that I had put something like my keys down on the kitchen counter one
night,
and in the morning they wouldn't be there. Two hours later I found them
on
top of the fridge. So, to make sure I wasn't losing my mind or
anything, I
set up an experiment. I spread out a cup of flour on the counter and
put my
keys down in them. You know, in case I had some strange animal in the
apartment running around. I stayed up the first night, but nothing
happened,
and I tried for the second night, but nodded off. Still, nothing
happened.
So I thought I'd give it one more night, but just act as I would
normally.
This morning, the keys had moved, to the dining table this time. And
there
were no markings in the flour."
Karen paused to gauge Lindsey's reaction, which seemed to show
interest.
"So ... what do you think?"
"Hmmmm...." Lindsey considered what the girl was saying, tapping her
finger
against her lips. "When did you move into this place?" she asked. "And
when
did you start to notice this going on? Have you thought to look into
the
history of the apartment and/or building? Have you been able to speak
with
neighbours and/or the former tenants? The landlord?"
Realizing that she'd just hit the poor girl with a barrage of
questions,
Lindsey smiled apologetically. "Sorry about that, but sometimes one
needs to
establish the history of the possible phenomena. You know, see if
there's a
pattern, try to establish who or what it is, plus rule out natural
causes,
like you attempted to do."
Karen nodded her head. "I see. Sort of like that Poltergeist movie,
where
they found out that their house was built on an old Indian burial
ground."
She paused for a moment. "No, I haven't really asked anyone about it
.... I
just moved in, you see, and I didn't want to seem like I was strange,
asking
about ghosts and all."
She paused again, hesitating slightly. "I ... I don't suppose you would
like
to come by, and see it for yourself? I don't mean to be so forward, but
....well, it is a little unnerving."
Lindsey laughed softly. "Honey, this is New Orleans. We LIVE by our
ghosts.
Real or not." she said in her lazy drawl. "It's practically a tourist
industry down here. But yes, I will come by and take a look, if you
don't
mind my bringing a fellow ghost hunter along? Her name is Rosie, she's
been
my roommate since college. We tend to do the preliminaries in pairs."
Inwardly, Karen cursed. She briefly thought of making it so that
Lindsey
came on her own, but then quickly decided that doing so would just lead
to
suspicions down the road. No, best to stay innocent.
A second thought came to Karen. This could give her a chance to see
just
what this ghost-hunting organization knew about things. Such extra
information would certainly score points with Martin.
"Of course." She replied after a moment, smiling. "The more, the
merrier, I
guess. Do you need to get anything before we go?"
"Just some equipment back at the apartment, and collect Rosie." Lindsey
said. The University's project could wait, besides, she had been here
until
the wee hours the night before, so she deserved some time away from
that
cursed computer. The mystery journal in her bag could also keep, for a
night
or two anyway.
Karen set the books aside and picked up her handbag. "Sounds fine. Do
you
have a car? It would probably save a lot of hassle."
Lindsey shook her head. "Na, a librarian cum ghost hunter can't afford
a
car, especially with the cost of insurance in this town." she laughed.
"I'm just parked out back and I could give you a lift back to your
place,
and then take you and your friend to mine."
"Sounds good." Lindsey began to tuck her books into her oversized and
worn
bag, taking just a bit of extra care in packing away that old journal.
One
of the things she was going to have to do would be to check out the
cemetery
records on the family, see if she could find the young woman's grave.
"Great." Karen replied with a smile as she packed up her things. "I'm
so
lucky to have bumped into you."

Subject: [DL-N] Girls that just wanna have fun! (JP)
Day 7 Mid Morning
[snip]
Crossing her arms Dizzi gazed up at her with a very serious childlike
_expression, "Miss Breezy, when are you going to let Mr. Ranker out?
He's not as mean as you think!"
[end snip]
Breezy looked at the little girl for a moment. First, she just busted
in very rudely. Then she asks when Ranker was going to be let out?
..Breezy made a mental note to talk to Amy and Link about their niece's
attitude as of late. Plus, the redhead couldn't help but wonder why was
she even around Ranker in the first place?.
Silently, the Wingleader gazed down at the little girl with such a
stern look that Dizzi couldn't help but squirm under the intense gaze.
"Dizzi, I know you have better manners then to bust into someone's
office without knocking! That was quite rude and uncalled for!"
Dizzi's head began to droop a little, the toe of her boot suddenly
becoming of great interest as it began to make little circles on the
floor. "In fact you've been rather sassy lately with people, and that's
not like you!" The woman added crossing her arms in a manner that had
the little girl sucking in her bottom lip. "Andddd, Little Miss, from
your 'announcement' I get the feeling that you have been playing
someplace I know for sure you're not supposed to be? " Dizzi's eyes
grew huge and Breezy leaned over with a sly grin, "Seems to me you just
tattled on yourself young lady!"
A strangled squeak came from the little girl and stifling a chuckle
Breezy moved to refill her coffee cup. Sitting back in her chair she
gazed thoughtfully at the child for a moment, leaning forward on her
elbow she rested her chin in the palm of her hand. Pursing her lips she
asked in a serious tone, "So my little friend, what great revelation do
you have that might change my opinion of 'Mister' Ranker?"
"Well...Umm", Dizzi muttered beginning to twiddle her thumbs trying to
find the words. "Well, he talks to me and his dragon is not mean and
Uncle Link says he's a man of honor." After saying that she looked up
at Breezy and asked," What does 'rev-ela-tion' mean?"
Breezy's head dropped her fingers stroking her lips as if she was deep
in thought but she was actually fighting back the pressing smile at the
girl's sweet innocence. Bless her little heart anyway! The redhead sat
for a moment and finally gaining control she looked up and said, "Well,
it is an awful big word, but it kinda means telling me something I
don't already know!"
It was Dizzi's turn for a little contemplation as Breezy watched
patiently at the current of emotion flitting across the cherub face.
Finally the little girl straightened squaring her shoulders trying to
look taller, the defiance shown plainly in her eyes as she blurted out,
"Breezy, he's just not mean!"
The Sr. Wingleader leaned back in her chair and the smile she had been
holding back twitched at the corners of her mouth. "Dizzi, Mr. Ranker
is young, hot-headed, rather crude and he most certainly lacks in
manners BUT, I don't think I've ever called him mean! I could be
mistaken, but I don't think that word has come up!" Of course she
wasn't about to go into detail with the child about the terms that had
come up.
"But."
Breezy raised a head cutting her off, "Sweetheart, there are grown up
things that are going on that you don't understand..." Seeing 'the
look' come to Dizzi's face Breezy immediately continued, "It's not that
you couldn't understand, I know you're a big girl now! But, this is
kind of official stuff and suffice it to say Mr. Ranker got himself
into a 'not so good situation' and until it's cleared up he has to stay
where he's at. Trust me when I say it's safer for everybody involved,
including Mr. Ranker!"
She had grown to love Dizzi as if the girl were her own daughter and at
times Dizzi's fearlessness worried her to know end. Breezy could tell
that her little firend wasn't completely satisfied with the answer and
the redhead could gladly strangle Ranker for putting her in this
position.
Breezy stood up and walked around the desk to the little girl. Resting
her hands on Dizzi's shoulders she bent down so they were eye to eye
and said," Hon, I know your Aunt Amy and Uncle Link are very busy with
taking care of David. Babies need a lot of attention and the rest of us
are quite busy with all that has been going on but I'll make you a
promise. Tomorrow around lunchtime you and I will go on a little
adventure together. Just the two of us okay."
"Really?" Dizzi asked with hope gleaming in her eyes.
"Cross my heart." Breezy replied making a gesture across her chest.
"Thank you!" the child exclaimed giving Breezy a big hug. What she
didn't notice was Breezy's wicked grin that meant she had something
planned for the little girl.
Giving her little charge a peck on the cheek the woman went back to her
desk. Gribbing the quill she scribbled into a book laying open. "Okay
Missy it's a date! You meet me at the dining hall at noon tomorrow and
we'll grab a couple of sandwiches from Uncle and we'll be off!"
The little girl's grin couldn't get any bigger, getting officially
written into Breezy's appointment book was very im****tant stuff and
Dizzi puffed up with pride. Skipping to the door she turned to eye the
redhead. "Don't you worry Miss Breezy I'll be there! Don't 'you' forget
now!"
Breezy rolled her eyes as the door shut behind the tiny terrorist. Like
the child would let her forget. [And if she doesn't remind you, I
will!] came Coo's quiet chuckle. The Wingleader groaned inwardly
knowing with that comment every dragon in the warren would make sure
she was there!
[..] An hour later
Sara headed to the admin offices. She wanted to give Breezy some
clothes the she made herself to thank her for giving her this
op****tunity. The young apprentice never thought she would ever be a
dragon rider, mostly because her father would have forbid it. But now
maybe that would happen soon since the searcher said she had strong
affinity.
Sara knocked on Breezy's door." Come on in" was the response the she
heard.
When the young dark-haired girl entered all she could see was a pile of
paper work and books on the desk.
Breezy didn't even look up when she said, "What is it?" When no answer
came the redhead a bit perturbed at the interruption lifted up to peer
over the pile in front of her. "What is..Oh hi Sara!" What can I do for
you?" She asked her tone instantly softening.
The young apprentice blushed a little as she said," I wanted to thank
you for the chance to join the upcoming hatching. So I made you this
dress." Sara held it up for Breezy to see. It was beautiful and also a
little revealing. "Brenna said you would like this pattern." The red
headed Wingleader inspected the masterpiece and noticed there was extra
padding in the bust area." She also said Galen and Ranker would like it
too."
Breezy looked at Sara with a raised eyebrow." Ranker?" she questioned.
At that moment Brenna burst in." Breezy I heard that that Ranker fellow
has the hots for you! Is it true?"
Surprised Breezy blinked at both eager faces, "I don't think that's any
of your business young lady!"
"Oh come on Breezy," Brenna grinned plopping down in the plush chair
across from her old friend and idol. "There's been rumors! Does Galen
know? Did he say anything! I saw him the night of the party! You looked
so pretty I think he was jealous when Ranker was talking to you! Do you
think they will fight a duel or something? That would be sooooo
romantic!"
Brenna's exuberance was a stark contrast to Sara's quiet manner and it
amazed her that the two had become such fast friends. The saying
opposites attract really fit the two girls but right now she didn't
feel like satisfying either one's curiosity. Shuffling some papers on
her desk she gave them a tight smile, "I would think you girls have
better things to do then to listen to rumors."
The young queenrider let out a sigh and crossed her arms, her lips
forming into a pretty pout.. Brenna knew that look on Breezy's face all
too well. "She's not going to tell us Sara! Are you?" She added looking
pointedly at the Sr. Wingleader.
"There is nothing to tell!" Breezy quipped flatly. "Now if you ladi...
The apprentice smiled fondly at her friend, "Well I guess I can't blame
her Brenna! Galen is nice, but he's older and well Ranker is.."
"Kinda cute!" Brenna answered with a impish grin.
"And very tall!" Sara added softly her eyes twinkling with mischief.
"Ooh and lots of muscles too!"
"And his dragon seems nice. Dizzi says that.."
"Ooh and I heard he actually kissed her!"
Both heads snapped around to gaze expectantly at the redhead. Seeing
the narrowed icy gaze Brenna jumped up and oblivious to the warning
signs gave a big sigh and started pulling her friend towards the door,
"C'mon Sara, I guess since Breezy won't tell us anything we'll just
have to ask around!"
"Enough!" Breezy growled and the two teenagers spun around instantly.
"As I said previously it's none of your business, but to satisfy your
morbid curiosity I have been appointed Ranker's advocate at his trial!
Nothing more, is that clear?"
"But..but..." Brenna stammered with an innocent expression.
"As to whether he has the HOTS for me or not, that is his problem! He
is an arrogant pompous ass that definitely needs to be taken down a peg
or two! But, as distasteful as I might find the task given me, I will
defend him to the best of my ability and I'd better not hear that you
two have been running around the warren adding to the rumors! Is that
clear?"
"But what about Gal..."
"No more! Off with you two!!!" Breezy snapped.
"But Breezy how can." Brenna whined.
"OUT!" The redhead commanded sharply pointing at the door.
Sara bit back a grin and quickly folded the dress placing it on the
chair then grabbed her friend dragging Brenna out the door before she
got the Wingleader really mad.
<Ooooh! Sister, what are those thoughts entering your head?> Coo added
with a bit of a giggle.
*What thoughts?* Breezy snapped, unable to deny that both men were now
forefront in her mind.
<Dirty ones about you , Galen, and ohhhh....>, Coo teased,< And here
you told some of the younger male human hatchlings that were, how do
you humans call it, mooning over young Sara that 'Dirty thoughts are
bad.'> the sparkly one added with a laugh.
Breezy's cheeks turned redder than her hair. Sometimes being joined to
a dragon was most definitely a royal pain in the butt. *That's enough
out of you Miss Pris! Now if you don't mind at least one of us has some
work to do!*
Breezy shook her head in frustration. Rumors about her and Ranker were
the last thing she needed. Groaning, she leaned back in her chair
listening to the sounds of the tittering girls as they ran down the
hall. After a moment she rose and picked up the dress holding it up to
inspect the rather low neckline. It really was a beautiful style and
she would have to make sure to thank Sara later. Still caressing the
fine material Breezy moved to the window and gazed out to watch the
girls hurry off towards their next round of mischief. A smile of
tolerant affection came to the redheads face as she watched the two
friends giggle and poke each other while pointing out some of the male
riders training on the green. Her smile turned into an amused smirk as
she suddenly realized she'd just been had?
