Subject: [DL-D] The Darkest Night! (JP)
Day 105
Night
They flew in low, keeping the wyverns between them and the night sky.
It was one of the tricks they had learned to better "see" the inky
creatures in the darkness. Their dark bodies were outlined against the
lighter starlit sky.
Though they craved to give voice, the Black Coffee Squadron came in
silently, so as not to give warning. They saw that the patrol dragons
had already engaged the enemy, so the wyverns were distracted, but they
were not like mindless wraiths. Surprise would definitely give them an
advantage. The BCS appeared from below as if out of thin air surprising
the wyverns and giving hope to the patrol dragons who knew that the
rest of the wing wouldn't be far be far behind.
Sharees saw that some of the patrol riders had gone after the attacking
ground troops, so she had Chamelle call them back to regroup. They
needed to focus on the wyverns and not be divided. If they could assist
the Gossimore's forces while fighting the wyverns, then they would, but
the wyverns had to be their primary focus, because with them above, the
ground forces were in much greater danger.
As much as Chamelle wanted to engage in her own one-on-one with the
wyverns, Sharees knew that they were needed to keep track of who was in
trouble and send sup****t their way. They flew the length of the battle,
watching and guiding the attacks. She wished she could get word to the
Gossimore forces below, as she saw the left flank begin to collapse
under the pressing attack of the forces from Triylar.
The BCS was hard pressed on all sides and just as Sharees feared that
the attacking wyverns would overwhelm them, help arrived. The Beta
Wing's arrival freed Sharees from the responsibility of directing the
attack. Jason was her superior and he'd be in charge now, which freed
Sharees to find some target of her own.
[..]
Thankfully Samson's saddle was ready to go when the call came about the
attack. In seconds the crimson giant was saddled and ready to go. As he
stepped into the stirrup Lexi's eyes fell on several pouches laying by
the door and as an after thought scooped them up and Samson dropped off
the ledge before he barely had a leg over.
[I wish you wouldn't do that!] Lexi snorted using his Herculean
strength to strap himself in against the forces of gravity as Samson
swooped downward.
They had barely touched down on the green before they were off again
with the wing and in moments appeared in the sky over Triylar. The BCS
was already there a sad longing hit Lexi for a brief moment that he
wasn't with them. But he had made his choice for better or worse but he
couldn't help looking for a certain sapphire dragon in the moonlight.
[Don't worry Chamelle says her and her rider are ok, but she's glad
we're here!]
*Who? Chamelle or her rider?* Lexi quipped uncoiling his longest
bullwhip. Tensing, the big man knew that the time for banter was over
and tensed readying for the battle to come. *Let's go get'em buddy!*
[..]
It was a long and arduous battle but the Dragonriders were slowly
beginning to gain some ground. If one were watching from below they
would think that Lexi and Jason were like two little boys at play as
the swept across the sky taking a deadly toll. Their fearsome courage
in the face of this horrible foe spurred the other riders on as the two
men worked in a harmonious symphony of movements catching wyvern and
their riders in the dragons' deadly crossfire.
[Starfire says he's one up on us now!]
A grim smile came to the blacksmith's face *You gonna let him get away
with that? Whoa, what is that? Hey isn't that one of the guys from the
Inn?* Lexi's eyes narrowed his jaw clenching as he remembered this guy
all too well.
*Hey, and he's after Dante! Sweet Pea would skin me alive if I let her
brother get hurt!* The red automatically rolled downward as Lexi
readied to strike. The moonlight created an eerie reflection off the
blade as it inched closer to taking the Beta riders life.
[When you grab him you, want me to toast him?]
*Nahhh, you've torched enough of my whips I'll take care of it!
Besides, it's payback time! Just get ready!* Lexi clenched his jaw as
they drew closer, he knew the timing had to be perfect or they could
easily worsen the situation.. *NOW!* he suddenly yelled through the
link.
Samson's massive tail whipped around slapping the wyvern hard on the
flank making the creature jerk and howl in pain. At the same instance
the blacksmith's bullwhip uncoiled with unerring accuracy s****ing
around the arm of Dante's would be assassin. Lexi braced himself but
still grunted under man's full weight as he yanked him off Jacks.
Looking down at the man dangling below him the blacksmith smiled in
smug satisfaction. "Remember me?" He sneered, with a flick of his wrist
the
coils of the whip released sending the man spiraling downward to a
grisly death.
Lexi chuckled at Dante's momentary confusion at still being in one
piece while the red banked away for its next target. *Tell Starfire
that one should at least count for two since it had a rider!*
[..]
A cloud cover rolled in hiding the moon making it hard to see and with
the wyverns ability the odds were once again turning against them. *We
gotta do something big guy, they are using the darkness against us!*
[What about those things you got from that Loki's rider, didn't you put
some of them in the pouch. Loki said they would light up the night!*
Digging in the bag Lexi found his flint and striker and pulling out the
long tube-like item he looked at it thoughtfully. [HOLD ON!] Samson
roared, suddenly tele****ting to avoid a volley of deadly acid.
*Geezus that's cutting it a bit close don't you think?* Lexi answered
with a roll of his eyes. *Big Guy, I need a minute to breathe so I can
figure this out. It's not like the sparkling launchers we set up down
in
the warren.
Hunkering over his saddle the blacksmith eyed the long narrow tube and
the fuse coming out one end. *I'm guessing though it works the same.*
Balancing the pouch between his legs he held the fused end down out of
the wind. Despite the fact that he knew it would spark Lexi still
jerked emitting a sharp oath and almost dropping the whole thing.
[You'd better hurry up we got company!] Samson warned as a Wyvern
appeared in the sky in front of them.
With the fuse burning good Lexi pulled out the tube and held it like a
sword aiming it at the creature. It kind of looked like the other stuff
they had so he hoped that he was doing this right. If it did what it
was supposed to do, it should either hit the creature or light up the
sky or luckily both.
Using their own tactics against the warren riders another wyvern
appeared right behind Samson and Lexi and as it inhaled to spew its
deadly venom the tube jerked launching something directly into its
mouth surprising both the blacksmith and the wyvern. The small
explosive went off with such force it literally blew the wyvern's
bottom jaw off and showered the rider it was carrying with its acid.
*"Dammmm!"* a wide-eyed Lexi muttered and thought at the same time.
"What the hell is that?" Sharees yelled, as the night sky was lit up
from some other source than dragon fire.
Chamelle circled back to find the source, <That was Samson's rider.>
<*By the Egg, is he all right?*> Sharees peered through the darkness to
see if she could see the big red dragon and his rider.
A second jerk from the tube sent another flaming ball whistling wildly
through the air just missing Chamelle and sending a shower of light and
sparks everywhere as it exploded.
"AH!" Sharees cried out, <*Get us away from here!*>
Chamelle swiftly obliged as another burst came from the strange
cylinder that Samson's rider was cradling. wyverns might be safer than
whatever that thing was!
*"Oh ****!"* Lexi muttered fumbling with the puffing tube to get it
aimed in the right direction. The third jerk grazed his side and he
yelped in pain as the projectile exploded somewhere behind him.
[HEY! WATCH THE TAIL!] Samson hollered flaming the confused wyvern in
front of him.
*TAIL HELL! I'M ON FIRE!* Lexi hollered back trying to hold on to the
tube and pat out the melting leather. *Geezus, Geezus!* He exclaimed
when hot sparks landed in his lap. It was a darned good thing he was
strapped in as he would have instinctively jumped off trying to put
them out. That was getting a little bit too close to home. His side
hurt like hell and he was sure it would leave a mark, but with the
damned tube still wildly launching out small explosions filled with
brightly colored showers of
sparks, he had no time to worry about it. All he could do was hand on
to the thing and hope for the best.
Samson flew on ducking and weaving trying to evade the enemy; of course
just who that was at the
moment remained to be seen, as a burning shape whistled past his head.
[Starfire says his rider wants you to quit messing around......and to
give him some!]
Despite the craziness, the strange launchers did the trick giving the
Warren forces the light they needed to fight back their lethal foes
{Tag: Michael So what is Jason up to?}
[..]
Sharees and Chamelle finished off a wyvern and circled to look for
another target. But the wyverns seemed all well engaged, and she was
loath to join against the ground forces.
<Well, perhaps you could help those people in the carriage down there?>
Chamelle commented.
Sharees peered down below her but couldn't see anything in the darkness
below. <*What are you talking about?*>
<There.> Chamelle banked and flew toward a line of trees. The tree line
broke and below them was a seldom used road that ran from Triylar to
Daere Warren. The forces from Triylar had been moving parallel to the
road along the farmers' fields. This carriage appeared to have been
fleeing, but had been spotted and were about to come under attack
[..]
There was a sudden lull in the fighting as if each side had to regroup
and Lexi asked the one question that had been at that back of his mind
most of the night. *Where was Sharees and was she okay?*
There was a moment of silence then Samson broke through the bridled
concerned he felt from his rider. [Chamelle says they are saving a
wagon that's under attack!]
*A wagon? Where? And who's with her?*
[An old road to the Warren and they are alone!] Samson answered
instantly banking in that direction already knowing what his rider
would say.
*Son-of-a ... Damned woman I oughta... Tell Starfire that they have
broken ranks and are by themselves and we're going to help!*
{Tag: Eddie - so what's going on in the wagon with Jade and the
brother?}
