Subject: [USS CAPRICORN] Uneasy Rests the Head

MD 4
0030

[SNIP]
"Get everybody back to the shuttle!" Ury nodded then tapped his comm
badge giving the same order to the entire team. Then calling the ****p,
"Captain we are under attack, we have several wounded and there's a
storm brewing. We're retreating to the shuttle for a beam out!" Another
flash of lightening hitting a tree nearby had the crew scrambling and
Ury's comm badge crackled loudly and went dead.

The creatures, protected against the elements by their wiry coat lay in
wait for their chance. The bright lights kept them at bay for the
moment
but some had actually reasoned that by knocking the strange things over
the brightness would go away and shortly two of the perimeter lights
fell the tall pole like lamps making a horrible shattering sound as
they
hit the ground. The urgent calls of the Away Team as they hurried about
helping the wounded to safety was drowned out by booming thunder that
was growing louder by the minute.
[END SNIP]

Ury could see two crew members, one sup****ting the other, but both
obviously injured, moving as quickly as they could toward the shuttle.
But behind them the gray furred creatures crept forward, held back only
by the bright lights. Ury raced forward to aid the wounded crewman as
another of the perimeter lights tottered and crashed to the ground
smothering them in darkness. As he swung the more wounded man over his
shoulder to carry him to the waiting safety of the shuttle, he expected
to be taken down at any moment by one of the slobbering aliens. He
could
almost feel their teeth and claws ripping into him as he stumbled on
with his burden.

Yet, the attack when it came did not reach them. Out of nowhere a
giant
tiger leapt between them. Ury could only offer the briefest of glances
behind as he hurried on, yet, he could have sworn that the tiger was
the
same as the one from Wuwei, but that just couldn't be true... could it?
But he had more pressing concerns than worrying about a tiger that
suddenly showed up out of nowhere. The tiger at least appeared to be
on
their side.

As the hatch closed behind them, A'kora called out, "Emergency Beam
Out,
Energize," into the shuttle's comm-link, which apparently was still
reaching the Capricorn, though their own communicators had gone dead.

They had been trans****ted to sick-bay. The wounded were immediately
whisked away to be tended. Ury found himself being given a thorough
examination and then underwent standard decontamination procedures.
But
the whole time he kept asking how many of the away-team had been
located
and beamed to safety, how many had were missing, how many presumed
dead?

He was surprised and shocked to learn that the FO's party had not
returned nor re****ted in. Leaving the sick-bay he covered the short
distance to the trans****ters in quick, broad strides. When the doors
opened he went inside, shouting, "Bridge!"

---
0100

Moments later the doors parted and Ury stepped out. His eyes scanned
the familiar scene as he rounded the ramp to the central seat. With a
smart salute Ury exclaimed, "Captain!"

"Lt. Rogan? I thought you were in sick-bay..."

"I am fine, sir! I respectfully request returning to the surface to
reclaim the rest of the away team! Sir!"

"Request denied," Reckage answered.

"Sir? But Lt. Commander Phillips, the Doctor, and ...?"

"No, lieutenant. We have no idea of their whereabouts, and sending
another party down to look for them at this point would be foolhardy at
best. No, the Lt. Commander and the Doctor have the security detail
with them, and if they are able to contact us, I expect they will. But
until then, and until we have evaluated what it was that your team met
down there on the surface, I am not risking anymore lives."

Ury's face tightened into the mask of duty, "Yes, Sir!"

"But, if you are ready to give me a preliminary re****t...."

"Yes, Captain! Of course."

"Good," then turning the next senior officer at the conn, Avi stated,
"You have the Bridge. Rogan, in my ready room."

---
Ury wasn't able to give as detailed a re****t as he would have liked.
There were some uneasily vague recollections, especially when trying to
recall the conversation with the man calling himself the Marquis.
"Sir,
the more I think about it, the more I don't understand how Commander
Phillips could have split the away team like that. It goes against all
Star Fleet protocols. But... at the time it seemed like the most
reasonable thing to do!"

Avi steepled his fingers and frowned, "Go on."

"The Marquis just walked right into our camp and.... Sir, I can't
explain it, but none of the security men stopped and searched him. Not
even with a tricorder! And, I recall, that I had my tricorder in my
hand, set to continuous scan, and ... but when I checked it, there is
nothing registered at all during the time that the Marquis was in the
camp! Nothing. Now why would I have deliberately stopped it from
scanning during that time? Honestly, I don't even recall doing that,
yet, I must have."

---
After Avi had told him to try and recall any other details, Ury left to
go write up his re****t. But the more he tried to focus on the tragic
mission, the harder it was to remember the details. Finally, with the
yawning over taking him, he his submit and entered the re****t into the
main computer. He thought to check on the status of the away team
members, and really had intended on returning to sick bay, but the
stress of the day, or something, overcame him, and with large, gaping
yawns, Ury stretched out on his bed and immediately fell into a deep
sleep.

---
1600

Ury found that he was able to give his re****t much clearer during the
meeting, yet the areas that he had recognized as vague before, were no
longer troubling his memory. It was as if they had simply not happened
at all, and he discounted his faulty memories to lack of sleep.

He simply stated the chronological events as he recalled them, not
editorializing as he had the first time he'd presented them to the
Captain when he'd just returned from the planet.

But when the floor was open for discussion, Ury couldn't help but voice
his concerns over the safety of the crew and the potential security
risks.

[SNIP]

"I don't like it, Captain." Ury started. "I don't like it at all.
There are any number of things that could go wrong. We have no contact
once inside that castle. The storms. Plus, who else knows what's down
there? Martin and Lewis are still missing. I don't like it, and don't
know what other precautions we can take other than not going down
there."

"Noted, Lt." Avi said, leaning back in his chair.

[END SNIP]

Ury sat back and tried to keep the frown from his face. Noted? Noted
but dismissed, obviously. He listened to the rest of the discussion,
though still did not approve of any of the crew members returning to
the
surface.

[SNIP]
"Excellent. I think it would be criminally negligent for us to come
here and not remove a piece of Starfleet equipment. Plus, if this
planet is dangerous, it would also be difficult for us to leave without
aiding its residents, don't you all think?" Nods around the table.
"Good, then as dusk settles in, Lt. Talara, you and I will go down to
the planet..."

"Sir?" the FO spoke up quickly.

"Yes, Commander, I thought you'd have a problem with that. I don't
want
you and the doctor going down to the surface again without 4 hours of
uninterrupted sleep." Avi said, looking between her and the doctor.

"Yes, sir." The meek doctor nodded and said in agreement.

"Good, meanwhile, Lt. Commander, you will assemble your team. Lt.
Rogan, I know you're in charge of security, but for now, I need you to
be the adult on board."

"Yes, sir."

"Unless there is anything else? No? Good, then dismissed. Istria, we
have a short while. I will meet you in Trans****ter room 2."
[END SNIP]

Ury didn't like the idea of the Captain going down to the planet,
but...
he was the Captain and he'd given Ury a direct order. Lt. Commander
Phillips would not be allowed on the Bridge without 4 hours of sleep,
and Ury was in charge until then.

He assigned the security detail to the Captain and Istria and
instructed
them to keep a close eye on the two, and to keep the area in which they
were working well lit. It was all he could do to make himself go to
the
Bridge instead of going on that security detail himself.

---
1800

"Do you still have a clear lock on the away team," Ury asked again, as
he'd asked almost every 10 minutes since they had left for the planet.

As usual the officer at the comm replied, "Yes, Sir. Still showing a
clear signal. But, Sir... they are moving away from the trans****t
site, though."

"Moving away?" Ury sat up, "Where are they moving to? Put it up on
visual."

A moment later and the geographical area of the trans****t site and the
immediate surroundings appeared on the main screen. Small red dots
were
weaving back and forth, but steadily moving away from the site.

"Put up a comparison to the path traveled by Lt. Commander Phillip's
party, as indicated by the communications signals and data transferal
signals from Dr. Hywell."

Ury swore silently, and he looked at the chronometer. Too early yet to
wake Lt. Commander Phillips, or... was it?

[TAG: Carina, Josh -- what is going on down there? And Tree -- does he
wake her or not?]

Respectfully submitted by
Arlene Jacobs
aka
Lt. Ury Rogan, Security/Tactical, USS Capricorn

SUMMARY:
MD 4
0015 (Quarter after midnight) As some alien creatures attack, Ury aids
wounded crewmen back to the shuttle for emergency beam out, and is
surprised when a tiger, which reminds him of the tiger on Wuwei,
suddenly comes to their rescue.

0030 Returning to the Capricorn, Ury is given a physical and a clean
bill of health. Then he gives Avi a brief account of what happened,
then returns to his quarters to write a re****t.

1600 At the staff meeting, Ury expresses concern over any members of
the
crew going down to the planet.

1800 While minding the Bridge, Ury constantly monitors the status of
the
away team. He is startled to hear that they have been moving away from
the trans****t site and asks to see a comparison overlay with the
destination of Montana's party. He worries about waking Montana when
he
gets the results.
