Subject: [DL-N] The littlest pirate

Day 8

Morning

It was early morning when the birds started to sing,
Jocko flipped over in his bed and reached for his
glasses on the nightstand. A couple of things fell off
as he searched for them, finally he had them and
placed them on his face. When a moan he got up, his
hair stick up in all directions. He ran his hand
though it and in a couple of places got it caught.
With a few tugs and ouches he pulled his hand free.

After a quick shower and getting dressed he gabbed a
couple of books and something to write on. He headed
out the door, always taken notes and always writing
down something. He was going to gather the kids this
after noon for a quick talk, nothing long, just to
find out what they liked and to find out what they
already knew.

Out side the barracks he searched around, everyone
seemed to be doing as always. Jocko when over to 'his'
tree, he had claimed it for his own. He leaned up
against the tree and opened a book, his favorite book.
Blue beard the pirate. He was writing down notes when
he heard someone yell.
"There Hatching!!"
He watched as many people started to rush over to the
hatching sands. He took a deep breath and collected
his books. His mind telling him to sit back down, that
is was going to be like the other times. He fought it,
he liked to see the wee little ones, they were cute at
that age.

He filled in with everyone and went into the hatching
sands, he found a seat close to the ground and sat
down. He looked on at the eggs, it seemed that one had
already hatched. Many of the eggs were not moving, he
wondered why. He watched as they rocked back and
forth. He sighed and opened his book and started to
read again. He listened to the cracking and bangs as
they eggs were broken apart. There were lots of awe
how cute and look at that one, Jocko wasn't paying
much attention. He slowly turned a page

*****
The ****p bobbed up and down in the water, rocking back
and forth. Crew men worked on the mast and the deck,
keeping thing together. Caption Almo, also knows as
Blue beard. Was at the wheel of the boat watching the
compass on the post. Heading due north, to the island
of roan. There was great treasure to be found, and
Almo wanted it.

...... bit further in the book

"I'll never give you the map Blue beard!!"

Almo walked over to the man tied to the mast and
raised his head to meet his eyes. "Aye, but you will."

"No chance..."

Almo looked to his crew. "How 'bout we send him to the
plank!" He raised his hands in the air.

All them gave a Arg!

******

[Arg!]

Jocko quickly looked up suddenly, no one was there. He
looked at everyone around him. There eyes still on the
dragons. He glanced over at the eggs, some of the
others had hatched and they were cute... don't get to
attached. He looked down at his book.

******

"Walk the plank, walk the plank.!" The crew chanted.

"Aye, so do you want to give us the map?"

The young man looked over into the water then back at
Almo. "Never!"

"Then you will sleep in Danny Jones locker!" He poked
the man with his sword. He made a little hope toward
the edge.

The crew yelled with excitement.

"Waite..." One of the men yelled. "Why don't we feed
him to Diver!"

"Arg... that's a great idea..."

*******

[Arg! walk the plank!]

He peeked up again, still no one around. It sounded as
if someone was right there. He took a deep breath, he
had to be loosing it.

He looked down at his book again and started to read.

Over in the eggs and little brown dragon was working
his way out, listen to the rambling of his humans
brain. Wondering what was going on. To him it sounded
like he was in trouble, being poked by a sharp thing
and then going to get eaten by Diver. What ever that
was. He pushed his way out as fast as he could,
pu****ng and stretching. Finally he was out. Slowly he
sat up, the world... he was out in the world... and it
was bright. He blinked his eye and scanned the cave.
Some of the humans were staring at him mouths covered.
Then he spotted his human, he could feel the link. He
charged the best he could, tripping all the way. Wings
stretched the out as far as they could go to keep
balance. He was only a few inches away.

"Hey!" Jocko fell back from his seat.

The little brown dragon shook his head back and forth,
book pages flying all over. Then with a whip of his
head he tossed the book into the air and swallowed the
rest. [Arg!!] He sat proud of his deed.

He fumbled for his glasses. "What did you do that
for!"

The little brown turned his head toward him, Jocko
gasped. The little dragon only had one eye... the
other was completely white. No pupil. Almost looked
like a pearl.

[Who are you?]

He pushed his glasses. *I... I'm Jocko...*

The little brown puffed out his chest. [I'm Bazil...]

He almost couldn't believe that he was talking to the
little thing. He crawled over to him and gabbed his
head and looked at his eye. *What happen to your eye?*

Bazil wrinkled his nose and looked crossed eyed. [What
are you talking about?]
Jocko waved his hand over the white eye. *Do you see
anything from this eye?*

Bazil watched with his good eye. [Yes.]

*Shut that eye... now do you see anything?*

He shook his head. Jocko moved to look at the eye.
[Hey! Where did you go?!] He started to panic.

*I'm right here, its ok...* He came back into view of
the good eye. *We have to go see the dragon healer
about this.*

[Arg! don't do that! or you'll walk the plank.]

Jocko laughed. Tears stung his eyes as he realized
what was happening. The dragon had chosen him, no one
else, he was going to be a dragon rider. With some
'special training'. He rubbed the little ones nose and
sighed. *Guess I'm going to have to hide all my
books...*

[Arg!]

Day 7 Late Morning

<snip from Tree's post>

The young Lord had just dismounted when the two Queenriders and the Sr.
Wingleader approached. The stormy gray eyes took in the pale blonde
warrenlady his breath catching in his throat at the sight of her. She
had grown even more beautiful over the long winter months. The re****ts
they'd received about the warren since leaving the mountains had not
been good and he'd brought even more supplies from Ryensmoor. It had
been a long trek from the estates and he'd been impatient to see Jeneve
as that's all he'd thought about for months. Now that he was here all
he could do was stand and stare at her. The haunted faraway look in her
eyes brought a momentary frown and he hoped it was only the rigors of
her position causing it and nothing more, yet there was something
different about her.. The fact that her hand was linked through arm of
the tall man walking next to her was not lost on the handosme royal as
he moved to meet the trio.

Ignoring the others Tallon's gaze was only for the willowy beauty and
his frown turned into a warm smile, his deep voice was like a gentle
caress as he reached out his hands to greet her. "My beautiful lady,
how I have missed you!"

<end snip>

Her eyes sparkling with emotion, Jeneve threw decorum to the winds,
ignored Tallon's outstretched hands and flung her arms around his neck.

"Oh, I've missed you too!" she sighed.

With a smile, the young lord gently disentangled himself from the
warrenlady and held her at arm's length to take a good look at her. Her
smile was undeniably genuine, but he still couldn't get away from some
other emotion lurking behind her eyes. She was hiding it well, to be
sure, but it was almost as if there was there was some kind of barrier
there.

Had something happened during the long, cold months of his absence?

"Are you well, Jeneve?" he asked. The words sounded strange, formal.

"Of course," she said brightly.

"But, you look pale, my dear," he said, quietly, so that no one else
could hear. What could he say? How could he ask about the traces of ...
could it be fear, behind her gaze? Surely she couldn't be afraid of
him?

"Oh, I'm fine," she said, reassuringly. "It has been a hard winter,
mind you. I expect I've lost a bit of weight. We all have! If it hadn't
been for your kind gifts and sup****t, I'm sure we wouldn't have made it
through the winter!"

"There's more where that came from," said Tallon, with a smile. "Can't
have my favourite warrenlady's people going hungry, can we?"

"And the hatching is any time now!" said Jeneve, her expression a
mixture of excitement and fear.

"But, that's a good thing, isn't it?" asked the young lord, touching
Jeneve's cheek tenderly. "You must be so proud of Malani, and isn't a
hatching a happy time for a warren?"

"It is..." said Jeneve, reserve creeping into her voice, as she took
Tallon's arm and led him away from the others, and especially Dev's
concerned gaze.

"But..." she continued in a low voice, "Norwall has had a lot of ....
bad luck, shall we say at previous hatchings. Some people say we're
jinxed..."

"That's ridiculous!" Tallon spluttered.

Jeneve shook her head, sadly.

"I wish I could agree," she said. "Malani has lost several of her
clutch - the little dragons just died in their eggs. The queen egg is
alright, though, but..." she trailed off, worry and fear in her voice.

"And Malani is taking it *very* badly, as you'd expect," Jeneve
continued. "*And* it's her first clutch, which makes it particularly
difficult for her."

She hesitated, wondering whether she should share the fear that lurked
at the back of her mind. Tallon's gaze was warm and concerned, she
could see that he shared her pain - and that decided her.

"Malani says that if anything happens to any of the other eggs, she's
going to tele****t - into nothing."

Tallon frowned, not quite sure of the implications.

"She'd take her own life, Tallon," Jeneve explained, gently. "And the
dragon bond... Well, if she does that, she takes me with her."

<tag Tree!>

Respectfully submitted

Carina

for Jeneve
