Subject: [DL-N] Prime Suspect
<snip from Jim's post>
Day 6 early afternoon
"Please come in Wood." Jeneve says.
"So what makes you think that the skeleton is Sandra's?" she asks.
"Well it is the same height, and the remains are completely decomposed.
Now I do not know how to tell how long a corpse has been buried, but I
assume that it must take a few years to decompose a corpse completely.
Well what do you think, and if so how can we hide it again?"
<end snip>
"Slow down, Woodlenn, slow down," said Jeneve. "Sit down and have some
coffee."
The Warrenlady frowned as the young man took a seat.
"Do you realise the implications of what you're saying?" she asked.
"Of course I do!" said Woodlenn, indignantly, "this is serious!"
"Yes, it *is* serious, and that's why I asked. I don't think you
realise quite *how* serious..."
Jeneve raised her hand as Woodlenn started to protest.
"At this stage, no one knows who this skeleton belongs to. We don't
know if it's a man or a woman, and we have no idea of how they died,"
she said.
"But I know ..." Woodlenn interrupted.
"What makes the remains suspicious are *where* they were found," Jeneve
continued. "In the orchard, not in the cemetery."
"That's what I was trying to tell you - Sandra's body was *hidden*, and
now it's been found!" said Wood.
"But Wood, don't you see what you're doing?" Jeneve said. "We're just
at the initial stages of our inquiry. And you come bursting in with a
murder scenario, complete with the identity of the victim. Can't you
see the first thing people are going to ask?"
Woodlenn shook his head, too wrapped up in his own thoughts to see
Jeneve's line of reasoning.
"They're going to say "How does he know so much?" If this *does* turn
out to be a murder, you're setting yourself up as the prime suspect,
Wood! Think very seriously about this - you could be hanged for this!"
"But I'm innocent!" Wood almost shouted, jumping to his feet.
"That may or may not be the case," Jeneve replied. "We'll just have to
let the investigations take their course. And in the meantime, could
you leave, please?"
The Warrenlady looked pointedly at Woodlenn.
"I need some time to think about this, and I think it would be wise for
you to *leave*!"
Woodlenn raised his eyebrows. This was a side of Jeneve he hadn't seen.
He'd never even heard her raise her voice before.
******
Once Wood had closed the door behind her, Jeneve poured herself a
refill of coffee and sighed, deeply.
It never rained but it poured, as they said.
She sat down, and thought through what she knew.
Woodlenn would need to be questionned, thoroughly, but first she had to
think of all the implications of this.
A murder inquiry with a searchling - possibly soon a Norwall Rider - as
the suspect, was the last thing the warren needed.
But why was the young man so convinced that the body belonged to this
young girl called Sandra? And who *was* Sandra? How had she died, how
did Wood know?
And most suspiciously of all, what was he interest in the matter? Why
was he so insistent that she helped him to rebury and hide the body?
Although she had no enthusiasm for the inquiry, Jeneve knew that
justice must be done, and seen to be done. And she could not defend a
murderer. Nor conceal his identity.
But Wood? A murderer?
She never would have thought it! He was such a popular young man. And
Jeneve never wanted to think badly of anyone.
But then, what about Cyrus?
Yes, good, sweet, kind people could go wrong. And Jeneve was the worst
possible judge of character - she'd proved that only too well...
Jeneve groaned, and buried her face in her hands. She was so *tired*.
[NRPG - the way I've played this, there's only one body, and it's the
Leatherworker's daughter [Bianca's post]. But Wood is paranoid about
his involvement in Sandra's death, and thinks that someone moved it to
Norwall to pin the blame on him. So he jumps to conclusions and assumes
it's Sandra.
Jen doesn't know anything about this, but she can see what a can of
worms Wood could be opening up!
(I don't know whether a dragonrider could be hanged for a murder he
committed, especially before he came to the warren - but Jen wants to
scare Wood enough for him to keep his mouth shut - at least until she
can talk to Breezy about how the jurisdiction around here works!
I hope I haven't snarled things up too much!]
Respectfully submitted
Carina - for Jeneve
SUMMARY
Day 6 early afternoon
Wood visits Jeneve, telling her that the skeleton in the orchard is
'Sandra', and asking for it to be hidden again.
Jeneve tells him to stay quiet for now, because he is making himself
the prime suspect for a murder.
She tells him to leave, so she can think.
Jen ponders the implications of what could be a murder enquiry, and
wonders how Wood knows so much about this 'Sandra'. She wonders if he
really could be a murderer, and berates herself once again about
Cyrus's death.
