[DL-C]: A New Wing and A New Challenge
[NRPG: This is probably somewhat backposted. It takes place
not long after the time jump. Hope I have the timing right. I've
been working on this for some time-okay a very long time].
***********************
Day 1. Morning
Lower Green
Katrina watched with anticipation as Cynthia assigned the new
dragonriders to Alpha or Beta Wing. Now that Katrina was Wingleader
of Beta, she had spent extra time observing the new recruits as they
progressed through their training. Despite exceptions in both good
and bad ways, this was fine group of new riders.
On the positive side, Cholmon/Param and Memnon/Rage had been, at
least to Katrina, new riders worth noticing. Kat had been impressed
to see both these riders and their dragons take extra time to train
on their own. Katrina had also seen potential in Tatewin/Tatezi. During
lessons, Kat had seen Tatewin paying extra attention to what was being
taught.
Unlike Tatewin, there was a handful of female riders Katrina had
noticed
who spent more time giggling, talking and ogling trainers Eth'n and
Andahar
than paying attention to their lessons. To Kat, such a lack of
discipline
could spell disaster when a rider was on the wing. So much could happen
to not only a rider and their dragon, but to a Wing during battle if a
rider and their dragon were not alert and in harmony with each other or
their Wingmates.
In a way, Katrina wouldn't mind having a few of these undisciplined
female riders on Beta. Kat wasn't a stern taskmaster, but she wasn't
one who took incompetence lightly. Kat would make sure that any of
these
new female riders who turned up in her Wing, knew what was expected of
them. They would drill, patrol, and work just like the rest of the
Wing.
And if they slacked off or caused problems, they would be disciplined
appropriately.
Azure interrupted Katrina's train of thought. <Speaking of work, you
are suppose to meet with Rowan the new Wing Leader after the Wing
assignments.>
<Thank you Luv. I don't know what I would do if I didn't have you to
keep me up on things>, sent Kat as she smiled and scratched the muzzle
of her bondmate behind her.
(You would still have Alizarine to re****t to you through your hatch
mate), replied Azure as she looked from her rider to the red and purple
dragon beside her rider's sibling.
Katrina also looked over at her younger brother Seth. Now that Kat
was a Wingleader, she had pondered whether or not to have her brother
in her Wing. Seth, had done courier jobs, some riding drills, and a
handful of patrols. Her brother had even helped during the Wraith
Hellspawn battle in a small capacity just after he joined with Liz.
Seth however had not been active in a Wing. From these thoughts about
Seth, Kat made a mental note to talk to Rowan about having Seth in Beta
Wing with her. After Kat made this mental not about Seth, she returned
her attention to Cynthia.
When Cynthia assigned Cholmon/Param to her Wing, Katrina was both
pleased and a bit reserved in her enthusiasm. Cholmon's dark past and
her dark demur, was known to bother quite a few riders. As Kat clasped
Cholman's hands and welcomed her to Beta, Kat knew she didn't want to
let the impressions that people had of Cholmon hinder either Kat
herself,
or the riders in Beta. All and all, from what Kat had witnessed
during Cholmon/Param's training, they were a fine bond pair to have
in the Wing.
Katrina returned her attention to the proceedings as Cynthia
continued
with the Wing assignments. A couple of the female riders from the
'Eth'n
and Andahar fan club' were assigned to Katrina's Wing. Kat tried to
keep
a sly grin off her face as each of the young females joined her Wing,
but
it wasn't easy.
<My rider stop that. I don't want you to get tyrannical and go all
power crazy now that you have more of a lead position>, came a chasten
mind voice of Azure.
Before Katrina could assure her dragon she would not become power
hungry or tyrannical, her dragon spoke again. This time Azure told
Kat that Syren had just re****ted that Cynthia was ready to have her
hatchling.

Later. On the way to Rowan's office.
After Kat gave her new Wingriders a pep talk and an idea of what
would
be expected of them while they were in Beta, Kat had headed to Rowan's
office. As Kat walked along, she thought about her speech. She had
given
her speech in both the common Dragonrider language and in broken
Nomad. Eventhough Kat's Nomad was better than it had been when she
first came
to Cleft, she had stumbled a bit with the words during her speech.
Thankfully, Seth had been with Kat as she spoke to her new Wing. Unlike
Kat, Seth had spent more time around young Nomad riders, so he was more
fluent in Nomad than his older sister.
Overall, Kat's speech had been short and simple. She talked about
drills
and patrols. Kat had put a little extra emphasis on how she expected
the
Wing to drill together throughout the week. As far as Kat was
concerned,
having the Wing doing drills would not only keep the Wing prepared, but
it would help her and the rest of the dragons and their riders see each
others strengths and weaknesses.
In her speech, Kat had also talked about how everyone needed to do
their
part to keep the Wing in shape and battle ready. Kat had eyed the girls
from 'the Eth'n and Andahar' fan club as she spoke about 'everyone
doing
their part'. Kat's eyes had also set briefly on Cholmon as she spoke of
Wing expectation. Kat knew Cholmon would have a tough time working with
the Wing, or in a pair on patrol. For Kat was aware many of the other
new
riders were intimidated by not only Cholmon's dark past, but by the
fact
that compared to the other new dragons, Param was a giant dragon.
But, eventhough Kat was aware of these things surrounding
Cholmon/Param, Kat
decided she just needed to work with these differences by concentrating
on what she knew, at least so far, were Cholmon/Param strengths.
<My rider, where are you going?>
<To see the Rowan the Wing Leader, why?>
<Because, unless you intend to walk out of the Warren, you have
walked passed the Wing Leader's office.>
Kat looked up to see she was indeed headed for one of Cleft's entry
gates. Kat's faced flushed a bit as she realized she had been so
wrapped
up in her thoughts about; her speech, the Wing, and Cholmon/Param, that
she had walked quite a ways past Rowan's office.
With a smile Kat sent, <Ah Luv, it seems once again you have brought
my mind back from the abyss of contemplation. Please tell Vashah to
tell Rowan, I was a bit sidetracked, but I'm on my way now.>
Kat then made a quick about face and hurried to Rowan's office.
(Tag Carys if you want to add to this. Sorry I'm late in getting this
out)

Not sure of the day. Whatever day Andahar and his riders
discovered the ruined Nomad camp. Morning of Day 3 I think.
After Katrina and her new Wing of riders had done a short drill
session, they had set off as a group to patrol. Andahar had taken
a group of his riders to check Nomad camps and Katrina had taken
her group to cover another area of the dragonlands. Both the drill
session and the current patrols were helping Kat get an idea of
how her Wing was functioning together.
During the drills, Kat had the Wing perform maneuvers they might use
when they engaged rogue dragons or wraiths. Overall, her riders did
good.
There were a few riders who challenged Kat. This wasn't unusual to Kat
since some members of her Wing were male Nomad riders. And from what
Kat recalled about Nomad males, they weren't use to following a
female. Kat
didn't mind being challenged-at least up to a point. If such challenges
lead to the endangerment of riders, dragons, or Wing, she had no qualms
about siting her experience and imposing her authority.
After the drills, Kat split her Wing into pairs to patrol the
area of the Dragonlands where her group was currently located. Aside
from Cholmon/Param, who patrolled alone, the pairs Kat had together
now would rotate partners throughout their first weeks in Beta. This
move of pairing different dragonriders would help Kat see how each
team of two riders worked together. When Kat found a team that worked
well together, she would keep them together as patrol partners. It was
while Azure was sending back information from these patrols, that Kat
heard the news about the Nomad village Andahar and his riders had
found.
Katrina was shocked when she heard about the Nomad camp. Prior to
this
new information, there had been only superficial evidence of the giant
s****s. Such evidence as; bones and skins in caves, old tracks in areas
of
the Dragonlands, and the lose of herds of prey animals. But now these
monsters were attacking villages. Which meant they were now a more
imminent and concrete threat.
Katrina sent a quick message via Azure to the riders in her Wing to
gather. Once together, her members of Beta could either return to
Cleft,
or assist Alpha Wing. Then later when Alpha Wing returned to Cleft,
Kat would meet with Andahar and Rowan to discuss the next course of
action concerning the s****s.
As Katrina waited for the return of Beta's riders, she thought about
the
current situation. This news about the s****s-though horrible to think
about, fit right in with her talk with Rowan and Andahar days ago about
both Beta and Alpha working together. With these monsters becoming more
of a threat, it would be im****tant that both Wings be able to work
together
to help protect nomads, landbound, warrenfolk, and dragonriders a like.
As Kat watch the first riders of the Wing...her Wing, arrive, she
smiled-she was up to this new challenge.

NRPG:
All: Yes, I am still about. Though my writing has been limited because
of my new work schedule. So I'm sorry for being late in getting this
out.
It seems weekends are the best time to write-at least if nothing else
comes up(and sometimes something manages to come up *sigh*). Anyway,
I'm
still here and still eager to write.
Also, as always, if anyone wants to do a JP, just drop me an e-mail.
