Subject: [DL-N] Mine!

[Day 8]

Jale and Freya were deep in thought as they examined the skull.

"I think it's a woman," said Freya.

"Yes, and she was quite young," added Jale, "and slightly built,
judging from the rest of the skeleton."

"Poor thing," said Freya. "Don't you think it's suspicious?"

Before Jale could answer, a trumpeting call went up from the dragons.

"What's that?" asked Freya, rising to her feet and looking around in
alarm. "What's wrong with the dragons?"

Jale's eyes took on the faraway look they did when he communicated with
Pearl. A smile spread across his face.

"Come on, Freya," he said, grabbing her arm and dragging her towards
the door. "The eggs are hatching!"

Freya's eyes widened. "But I'm not ready!" she gasped.

"You're as ready as you ever will be!" Jale grinned. He appeared amused
at this new, uncertain Freya. "You've got dragon affinity, the eggs are
waiting - you've got to *hurry*!"

Freya gulped.

"You're right..." she muttered, grabbing her cloak and hurrying after
the pale healer.

********

The hatching cavern was already full when they arrived. A cry went up
from the crowd as another searchling bonded with her new soulmate.

Eagerly, Jale pushed through the crowd, leading Freya with him. When
they reached the front, Jale let go of her hand, and whispered in her
ear, "you'll be fine. And whatever happens, I'll be here for you,"

Gently, his lips brushed her cheek, and then he melted back into the
crowd.

Freya turned her attention back to the sands. Malani lay curled
protectively around her remaining eggs.

Freya took a tentative step forward, and the golden queen rumbled
threateningly.

"Don't worry," Freya said softly. "I'm not going to hurt your babies.
I'll just wait here, shall I?"

Freya sat down on the sand, and smiled reassuringly at the dragon.
Malani's eyes narrowed, but her threats ceased.

********
Minutes passed, seeming like an eternity to the waiting searchling. She
cast her mind back to the conversations she'd had with Vasklar about
the joining process. She should wait for a dragon to speak to her. But
what did a dragon sound like?

She tried to empty her mind of all thoughts, to make her mind as
receptive as possible.

"I'm trying too hard!" she berated herself. But she didn't know what
she'd do if she didn't join - her Heartbeast had sent her here when it
died, and she was convinced that she was destined to bond with a
dragon. So where would she go from here if it didn't happen.

She remembered Jale's words and smiled.

**********
Suddenly, a gentle voice crept into her unguarded thoughts.

<Why won't you come closer?> it said.

Freya's gaze snapped back to Malani and the eggs.

<<Are you...?>> she began to think back, instinctively.

<My mama won't hurt you> the little voice continued. <My mama loves me,
and I'm telling her that you're mine.>

Freya rose unsteadily to her feet.

<<Are you sure?>> she asked, looking uncertainly at the golden queen,
who had turned her head and glared when Freya stood. <<She loves you so
much, I think she's worried I might hurt you.>>

Freya felt, rather than heard, a gentle, purring laugh in her head.
<She knows you'd never hurt me> the voice said. <I told you, you're
mine. Now *please* come closer, I want to see you!>

Freya took a step nearer, then another. Malani growled, but uncurled
slightly, uncoiling her tail from around the remaining eggs. One of
them had rolled over, and a large crack had developed in its side.

<I can see you now!> a voice came from the crack in the egg. Freya saw
movement inside.

<Now will you help me?>

Unable to stop herself even in the face of Malani's snarl, Freya rushed
forward and reached into the widening crack. A little clawed limb pawed
at her arm as she helped the hatchling emerge into the world.

The hatchling was dusky-grey, paler beneath, with soft, dark eyes, and
tiny, backward-pointing horns. Her delicate wings, still damp, were
folded along her back, and she had an air of elegance about her.

<<You're beautiful!>> Freya murmured to her, tears flowing down her
cheeks.

<No, I'm not Beautiful> said the little dragon. <I'm Griese. And now
you've got to tell everyone. Because you're mine>

Freya gently stroked the hatching's smooth, warm skin.

<Alright, Beautiful Griese> she said.

Freya turned to the cavern, and her voice rang out clearly.

"Her name is Griese!" she said.

*And she's mine!* she thought to herself.

Respectfully submitted
Carina

Day 8 the hatching cavern

Sara set next to Brenna. Not like she really had a choice. Brenna
wouldn't let go of her arm and the young apprentice didn't want to
upset Brenna by sneaking away. Plus she was curious as to what went on
during these hatchings. In all the years they lived here Sara and her
mom where not allowed to attend and as usual her father was drinking at
the party until the next morning.

The dark haired apprentice watched as the dragon's one by one hatched
and climbed out of their eggs. She giggled when Jacko's dragon ran up
and defended him as Brenna said from an evil book. They laughed at the
joke. But Sara was worried about something. She did not know that the
hatchlings where that big. How was she going to hide that from her
father?

Her father's possible, no not possible more like definite reaction is
what feared her the most. The young, would been dragonrider trembled at
the thought of what would happen to her and her mother if she brought a
dragon home.

<Don't worry. Everything will work out.> came a soft gentle voice.

Sara looked around trying to find where the voice came from.

"Brenna. Did you say something?" she asked the blond sitting next to
her.

Brenna look at her with a puzzled expression." No I didn't. Why?"

Sara stared looking around looking as puzzled as her blond friend." I
thought I heard some one say 'Don't worry.' " The young apprentice's
eyes grew wide and she gasped." You don't thing I'm going crazy do
you?"

<Your not going crazy believe me.> came the gentle voice again.

"There it is again Brenna!" Sara said as she started looking around
frantically trying to desperately to find where the strange seemingly
disembodied voice was coming from. Brenna smiled as she figured out
what was going on. The young queenrider put a hand on Sara's shoulder.

Brenna pointed towards the sands," I think you'll find the voice is
coming from there."

The young dark haired girl looked towards the sands and saw a brown
dragon emerge from his egg. She wondered if that was her dragon as she
saw him stumbling across the sands.< No that's Bazil. I'm over here.>
came that voice again.

Sara looked again and this time she seen another egg rocking and
cracking. Brenna gave Sara a slight shove toward the sands." Go and
help her will you."

The young apprentice ran across the sands toward the egg. Sara started
pulling pieces of the shell off. She kept going until she saw a pink
head peek out. Its head spikes tipped in red.< Thank you.> the young
dragon said.

Sara stumbled back and fell on her behind.*I can't believe this dragon
is talking to me.* she slowly reached out and gentally ran her hand
across the snout. She could not believe she's a dragon rider. The
dragon responded by nudging the young rider with her snout causing
Sara's arms to wrap around her pink neck.

<My name is Harmony. And don't worry what ever happens I'll be there
for you.> the dragon told her bond mate in the most gentle and sweetest
voice Sara ever heard.

"So what's her name?" Brenna asked as she came up besides her young
friend.

"Harmony. Her name is Harmony." Sara softly replied.
