Day 8

Morning

Bazil got the message from the little queen, he
told Jocko to follow him. Quickly he jumped up,
leaving the remains of his book on the ground. He
walked behind Bazil at first until the little brown
started to panic. Then Jocko rushed to his side with
the good eye. Jocko looked on head, watching as all
the searching's and the little dragons followed
blindly behind the little dragon queen. Outside they
were in a mix of people and hatchlings.
Suddenly Bazil snapped to his left. Making a rider an
there newly hatched jump out of the way. Jocko quickly
grabbed the Bazil's head and pulled it away. "I'm
soooo sorry about that." He half smiled. He walked
around and on the left side of his head. * I know you
can't see me, but rest your head on my hip.* As Bazil
did Jocko placed his right hand over the dragons head
resting his palm over the his cheek.
Bazil sighed. [I can't help it...]
*I know.* Jocko could feel the little dragon sadness.
[I don't like only seeing out of one eye.]
Jocko didn't know what to say, he new it would be hard
at first. He could only hope things would get better.
*I will always be by you I promise.* He patted him.
*Look before you snap, ok?*
[I'll try...I don't want a book to get me.]
Jocko smiled and laughed a little.

<Just a FYI on how Bazil will be for a while till he
gets comfortable.>

Summary:
While following the queen Bazil snaps at someone cause
he couldn't see them. Jocko takes up position on that
side to make sure that dosen't happen again.

Day 106
Late morning.

Sharees wanted nothing more than to continue sleeping. Every inch of
her body ached. She tried to cover her head and block out the sounds
coming from the kitchen; the rattle of dishes, the clanking of pots,
and
the ringing of silverware. Finally Sharees sat up in bed, realizing
that the only person in the house that would be making such a noise was
Angel.

At that moment the young girl pushed open the bedroom door and peered
in. A big grin spread across her face when she saw that Sharees was
sitting up in bed.

The white puppy bounded in through the door, pu****ng the door wide
open.

Sharees could then see why Angel had only stuck her head in, as the
little girl was holding a tray of food. Angel carefully walked across
the floor balancing the tray and placed it on the bed beside Sharees.
Her smile was eager, yet reserved.

Sharees, however, enfolded her into her arms, "Oh, Angel! It's ....
the
best breakfast I've ever seen!" Tears came to her eyes as she held the
little girl in her arms.

But before either of them could take a bite, a small white bundle of
fur
bounded onto the bed and helped herself to some bread.

"Mishka! Down!" Sharees called out, pu****ng the pup off the bed.

Angel's eyes went wide and her mouth dropped open in surprise.

Sharees frowned, "Ummm. The name? It just came out. Sorry. I can try
to guess some other different names if you'd like...."

But Angel shook her head no, emphatically.

"No? You like Mishka?" Sharees asked.

Angel nodded vigorously. Then she pointed to her temple and nodded
vigorously again.

"You mean that's the name you were thinking of earlier?"

Again Angel nodded and grinned.

Sharees laughed, "Odd... that's the name I had for the puppy ... in my
dreams."

[NRPG: No tag, just FYI]

---
Roxie had been able to sleep late, but she had not slept well. Her
dreams had been filled by nightmarish flashes from the night's battle
with the wyverns. She had groaned and tossed, reliving the terror of
the fight. Finally she dragged herself from her torturous bed and
stumbled about in her apartment, looking for some clean clothes to
throw
on.

[Your headache is hurting me,] came a disgruntled voice in her head,
making her wince.

[*Thank you, Zanne, for making it worse!*] Roxie retorted. She needed
some coffee, but she didn't feel like waiting for any to brew. [*Where
are you?*}

[On the ledge outside.] Zanne replied.

[*Ah...I need some coffee.*] Her mind flashed a picture of the green
in
front of the dining hall.

[I'm ready when you are.]

A moment later the redhead was pu****ng open the doors to the dining
hall, hoping to get a cup of coffee. Instead of diners having a late
breakfast, she was dismayed to see a roomful of young people, very
loudly milling about.

"What in the lands is going on in here?"

In a crowd of searchlings, Akety pushed her way out, yelling at some of
them to settle down and to go do something else then gripe. She almost
ran to into Roxie as she came in.

"Oh...hey Roxie...you want to know what's going on?" She looked back at
the mess of people then to Roxie. "Well you are standing in the new
searchling barracks." She motioned the whole room. "The old ones where
destroyed."

"They're going to be living in here?" Roxie exclaimed in dismay.
"Where are the riders going to eat?" Then she took a better look
around
and amended, "And they can't live like this... it's... barbaric. Who's
in charge here?"

"The riders are going to eat here still, just around the searchlings."
She said as she stood taller. "And I'm the one in charge..." she went
back down. "... for the time being that is. Unless I don't get things
figured out." She sighed. "They don't seem to listen to me very well
with out Alexi here... they really listen to me good that one day when
he was there."

Roxie narrowed her eyes as she contemplated the chaos. "I'm getting
some coffee... and then, I'm going to help you organize these
rag-a-muffins into some semblance of order!" Roxie grinned at Akety.

After drinking about half a cup, Roxie was ready to face the day, and
the searchlings. First she surveyed the room. Then she moved among
the
displaced searchlings moving those who were in the way, and helping
those that needed to be settled, to get settled in.

"If we move them all over to this side, then that leaves those tables
open for diners." Roxie suggested.

"And if we move those tables out of this area, that leaves more room
for
bedrolls," Akety chimed in, feeling rather more in control of the
situation.

They put the lounging searchlings to work, moving tables and setting up
barricades. Roxie and Akety worked together to get them organized into
small groups that would help look out for each other, as well.

"Alright you three, help us pull the tables over here." Akety called
them over while she and Roxie stood at the end of a table.

The three searchlings rushed over and they all started to move the
tables. After a short bit many of the searchlings were helping. Akety
looked around, some were still sitting and watching. Many still had
fear
in their eyes. Poor things, probably never had anything tragic in their
lives happen. Then she saw the twins out of the corner of her eyes.

"Hey you two!" She set the table down. They were heading out the door.
"Where do you two think your going?"

"Umm... outside." Alton smiled.

"No, you are going to help clean this place up."

"Awwww....alright." Alton walked over and help some of the others pick
up some chairs. She smiled and looked to Roxie. "So how do we set up
the
sleeping places?"

Roxie surveyed the place, her hands on her hips, and then she smiled
slowly, "I suppose they'd want a bit of privacy. Why don't we use
those
tables? Instead of stacking them all up in the way. Why not tip them
on their edges and stand them up side by side?"

Akety's eyes lit up as she visualized what Roxie was suggesting,
"But...
what if they run into them...?"

"We could say, 'no rough-housing,' but being that they're mostly
kids...
what if we brace them on either side with an additional table?"
Roxie's
hands sketched in the air and Akety smiled and nodded.

"Let's get to work, boys!" The petite red-head quickly had the boys
jumping to help her as she strode about instructing them on building
the
barricades. Sheets were hung over "doorways" and soon half of the
dining hall had been converted to usable barracks.

"Well, that was fun," Roxie grinned at Akety.

"Yes and it worked out better then I thought it would." She smiled, she
watched as searchlings started to go into the little rooms, dragging
their stuff in with them. "Seems like they like it." She looked around,
there seemed to be enough room for everyone. The riders could eat and
the searchlings could sleep and do what ever. Akety looked up to Roxie.
"Well do you think anything else needs to get done or do you want to
sit
down and get something to eat?"

"Normally, I only have coffee in the morning... but, after all this
hard
work, I'm famished! Let' grab a bite, shall we?" Roxie grinned at the
younger woman, and the two made their way through the serving line,
loading up two trays, before settling at a table. "So... how'd you get
nominated for such a... prestigious assignment?" Roxie asked around a
mouthful of breakfast.

Akety smiled. "Well the duchess asked me and Alexi to teach the
searchlings before the hatching. Then I kind of took over. I felt that
I
should watch over them and take care of them. I know a little of what
I'm doing, I can teach them and learn a little myself." She chewed some
of her toast. "I wasn't taught much before my hatching, felt like I was
just tossed into it. I don't want to do the same to them. They need to
know something about the little dragons... especially with those things
out there. They need to know how to take care of things now. Just in
case something happens."

Roxie looked at her.

Akety half smiled. "They need to know what to do if the worse is to
come."

Roxie nodded and looked over at the youngsters. They seemed to be
getting younger every day. Or maybe she was just getting older. But
Akety was right, life was a lot more unpredictable now for any
dragonrider, or potential dragonrider. They should be prepared for
anything. "If you want some help... I mean, I know my way around."
She
winked and laughed at her own joke. Then sobered, "But I do understand
your concern. They need to know what they might face. Being a
dragonrider was dangerous enough with wraiths and waste-creatures, but
this new threat... these wyverns... they are a whole new breed of
danger."

She smiled. "Help is always wanted. There are so many of them, there
was
no way I could handle them all my self." As she looked around, she saw
Alexi. "Hey Alexi, what do you think of the job Roxie and I did?"

Lexi had come into the dining hall expecting to take the lead in
organizing the searchlings and give Akety a hand. He looked around in
amazement. "Wow. You did this?" Lexi let out a long whistle in
appreciation.

Roxie grinned, "Sure did, big guy! Our little Akety here has the heart
of a wingleader."

Summary
Day 106
Late Morning

Sharees wakes up with the white wolf pup on her bed. She blurts out
"Mishka!" to Angel's delight, for that is the name she had wanted for
the pup. Sharees comments that she had dreamt that name.

Roxie wakes up late and wants some coffee. She goes to the dining hall
for a cup, only to discover total chaos, as the searchlings have been
relocated there after the attack on the barracks. Akety has her hands
full and Roxie pitches in to help organize them. Lexi arrives after
the
work is done, much to his surprise.

Day 17

Morning

Matt rolls over and sits up, yawning and he rubs the sleep from
his eyes. His fire had died down to slightly warm coals. He stood up,
stretching as he looked around, his long frame bending far more then
usual. He walked over to a nearby stream, bending near the edge to
wash of his face and hands, gasping at the frigid water temperature.

Suddenly, Matt realized that something was amiss. Freezing, his
wet hands and face still dripping water, his eyes scanned the bush
around him. He did not see anything, but his hunter's instincts told
him that something was not right. The forest around him had gone dead
silent, the only noise the stream.

Standing up slowly, he took on step back towards his camp, and the
bushes to his side exploded, a large tan body shooting out. With a
snarl, the mountain lion landed right where Matt had been standing, its
massive claws churning the earth as it turned. Landing a few feet away
from the back flip, Matt crouched down, his eyes narrow. The lion
turned again and jumped, coming in fast and low. With a flex of his
legs, Matt jumped over the cat, striking down with a foot and slamming
his heel into the base of the cat's skull, sending it rolling into the
campsite.

As it shook itself free of ash, Matt came charging into the site
and full speed, and the cat crouched down. Raising his hand, the cat
tensed, and Matt switched tactics at the last moment, jumping into the
air and la****ng out with both feet, slamming into the cat's ribcage and
sending it flying a few feet to slam into a tree.

Shaking it's head slightly, the cougar stood up, growling at Matt.
Standing tall, Mat took one menacing step towards the cat, growling
low back at the cat. Their eyes locked, and a Matt did not look away,
instead facing down the cat. After a moment, the cat turned away,
limping off into the woods. Matt watched it for a moment, then turned
on his heel and started to pack up his things. Once that was down, he
through his pack over his shoulders, then paused for a moment, his head
cocked.

'Dragonrider..........M'tterick..........seek the voice........' he
heard faintly in the back of his head. He looked around, unsure of
where the sound had come from. He had heard the term Dragonrider
before, but he thought that name was restricted to rich people and
gentry.

Shaking his head, he turned and headed back through the woods, back
towards the road he had seen earlier. He was sure he was far enough
away from Marketa that he could travel the roads safely.

-One hour later-

Matt continued to trudge down the road, slightly bored, but following
the tugging he felt in the back of his head. The road stretched out
straight before him, and he could see that it was very empty.

" Oh well, no one ever told me this was going to be interesting." He
mumbled to himself, hiking his bag on his shoulders.

Summary

Day 17, Morning

Matt wakes up the next day, and tries to clean himself at a nearby
creek only to have to fight a mountain lion barehanded. He does not
let panic take over, and is able to scare the cat away with some quick
thinking. He then continues on his journey, trudging down the road
away from Marketa, and closer to Whiteriver Warren, though his does not
know this.

Day 107

Early morning

Something wet was rubbing his face wet and warm. He
pushed it away. There were some birds outside the
window, singing their morning song. He reached over to
put his hand over the huntress... she was gone. He
found himself wrapping his arm around the puppy, who
licked his face. Probably out doing some runs, working
on her bowmen ****p. She was very good and getting much
better. He rubbed the little wolf's head. His mind
wondered to jacks, he could tell he was resting. He
was still
very tired from last yesterday. Damn things... his
thoughts trailed to his sister. So young, sweet and
innocent. He sighed, his sister. Only knowing her for
a few months. Oh how he wished he could have been
there though all her troubles. When... their parents
were killed by Omar. That man had some problems...big
ones. She was so understanding, and willing to take
him. To accept that fact that they were related. That
they were forever brother and sister.

Then there was Weya... how his life had changed when
he met her. She meant everything to him, if it wasn't
for her he wouldn't have ever stayed here and met his
sister. He took a deep breath.. she was so smart and
pretty. She always knew what to do and what to say.
Always so calm. Though he could see something in her
eyes that tore his inside... she didn't seem happy.
Like something was bothering her from the inside. He
hated not being able to do anything. He wanted to ease
all her pains. He thought back to when they met, by
the fire near the warren. Then they moved on to her
cave. Those times were magical, just him, her, Jacks
and Nightbreed. She taught him to hunt, he taught her
to ride on Jacks.

The sun that was ****nning on his back went dark, he
turned to see Jacks in the window. The big green
showed his teeth, his attempt to smile. He waved at
him to move away from the window and sat up. Jacks
stuck out
his dragon tongue and jumped into the sky, Dante saw
another shadow following him. More then likely Ishtar.
Jacks sister at heart. Jacks leaned on her when ever
things went wrong. Ishtar found that Jacks was the
best dragon to lay around with and talk about the
their riders.

There was a tap on the door, He got up and put on his
****rt from the other day. It has a huge tear in the
front. He adjusted it the best he could and opened the
door. It was Akety, she was holding the little black
puppy.
"Hey Akety."
She eyed his ****rt and ruffled up hair as she set
Larka down. "Did we have a rough night?" She gave him
a smile.
He stuck his tongue at her and allowed her in. "What's
going on?"
She sat down on his bed. "Looks like you had fun..."
She smiled at him. "Nothing I had to get up early to
work with some of the seachlings. Living in the
Dinning hall is going to cause problems."
He nodded and went to find another ****rt, he tossed
the torn one at her. "I see, what are they doing about
the barracks?"
"Sybil is taking care of that. She has set some people
around it to watch it. Some are even talking about
going down to see how far it goes and what its under."
He put on a dark brown ****rt. "I bet some go under the
sands, I say we should get as far as we can in the
caverns and block them off. That's all we need is for
those things to come up from under the queen."
She sighed. "Don't go there... that would be a
disaster. Ten fold. They would get the queen and the
eggs. That is a loss we can't take."
"Are there lots of riders in the Med-center?"
"I think we did better them we have been doing, they
are smart yes. But we are learning their ways. There
are some in the center but not bunches."
He thought of the night. "Those people riding the
beasts are
jumping from them. Landing on Jacks. Alexi and Jason
saved my hided."
"The people that ride those things are nuts. When the
humans were killed did the beast die?"
He shook his head. "No..."
"That's no good." She scratched her head. "Well I have
to get back to the Dinning hall, last I heard one of
the twins were going to go into the barracks. Do you
think you could watch Larka for me? She has no one to
play with."
"Sure, she is always welcome with Weya's little one."
She hopped up and gave him a hug. "Thanks." She picked
up Larka who was playing tug of war with the other
puppy with one of Dante's socks. "You be good for
uncle Dante." She nuzzled the puppy's nose to hers and
set her down. She immediately started to play again.
She headed out the door.

Dante went and made the bed, and fixed all the wolves
something to eat. He had planes today... one was to go
to his wing leader and explain his double ****ft. He
was playing with the words in his head while he fixed
the meat for the dogs. He still felt a power struggle
with Jason every time he was around. And yesterday
didn't help any at all, yelling at him to go home. He
sighed as he placed the bowls on the ground. He went
back to his closet and found his best riding pants and
boots. He went into the bathroom and combed his hair.

Before shutting the door, Dante hunted down the
leather chew toys that Sharees had made for the pups.
He tossed the toys at them and shut the door. He took
a deep breath; the morning air felt... ok there was,
though, the smell of battle. He called for Jacks to
help him down, him and Ishtar both came fluttering in.
Jacks informed Dante that his sister would have patrol
tonight.
*I hate her patrolling at night...*
[It wouldn't be any better in the day.]
He hopped of onto the ground. *Yes it would...
everyone would be awake and ready. *
[Ishtar said not to worry... there are others that
won't let anything happen to her.]
He sighed. *I just don't want to lose her. *
[She agrees.]
Dante rubbed Jacks nose and headed toward the dinning
hall. Eat first and hopefully kill the butterflies in
the stomach. He walked in. What a mess, searchlings
here and there. Beds along the walls, tables pushed
every which way. He looked for his sister, but not
seeing her or the twins figured out where she was.
Dante went though the line and got a biscuit and
muffin. With both of those he grabbed a cup of coffee
and headed back out. Way to crowded in the Hall. With
biscuit in mouth he started toward the lake.

Sitting on one of the benches he chewed his food and
his mind drifted. Weya will be a rider soon; the
thought of her having a dragon made him smile. This
would be interesting, watching them train. Hopefully
the foulness that was taking over the land will be
gone before that happens. The huntress and her dragon.
Then she will be able to fly the skies with him, in a
whole new way. Riding with someone is special. It's a
whole different experience.

He looked out over the water; the sun was ****nning
over it. He could see reflection of the dragons in the
water. He liked this place, better then any of the
other places he had ever stayed. He stood up; it was
time to go talk to Jason.

Once at the office door, he already felt sick again.
His mind told him just to go home. Jason was going to
rip him a new one. He could sense it. Turn around and
go back, His mind told him, maybe he will forget about
it. He laughed at himself, that is the last thing he
would do is forget. Come on be a man, face him. He
shook his head. Turning around, but as he did he heard
the door open.
"Ah Dante, I was just getting ready to find you."
Dante felt a lump in his throat, he turned around.
"Oh..H..ey Jason." he chocked out. That's right now
you really good. His mind pocked fun at him.

*****

Afternoon

Sliding along the barracks the red head turned toward
his brother. He motions for him to hurry up.
Alden scooted close to Alton. "She is going to kill
us!" He hissed at him.
He looked around the corner. "Shhhh....and she won't
if she dosen't know..."
"Dude she keeps an eye on us... as soon as she can't
find us she will send that black beast of her."
He looked at him. "The puppy?" He looked back around
the corner waiting for an opening.
"What.... no! The dragon."
He grabbed Alden's hand and he ran toward the hole in
the ground, there was a latter and he ****mmied down.
Alden close behind. The cavern was huge... and it had
a few tunnels to follow. Alton looked to his brother.
"So which one do we take?"
Alden preferred left, he was left-handed. "Left..."
"I say right..."
"Why do you ask me if you want the opposite?"
"It's nice..."
"I say let's go straight."
The boys jumped and turned. It was Weya, smiling at
them. "If you two can't deiced then I will." She
walked in between them.
Alden looked at her. "What are you dong here?"
"Following you."
"Why?" Alton asked not looking at her.
She rolled her eyes. "Someone has to keep you out of
trouble."
Alden turned to Alton. "Now, not only Akety but also
Dante will have our hides."
He placed hand on his shoulder. "Alden, everyone will
want our hides... but not cause we did something
wrong, but because we found and stopped the creature."
Alden raised a brow; he was about to say something
when another voice spoke up. "What are you three doing
down here?"
"He did it!" Alton pointed at his brother.
Alden's mouth dropped. "You little rat!"
She laughed. It was Roxie. "Are we not the guilty
ones." She strolled over to them. "So what are we
doing?"
Alden looked to Alton who spoke up. "We are going to
find the things and stop them before they get under
the sands."
"Just the three of you?"
"Well four, if you want to come Roxie." Alton smiled.
Alden elbowed him.
"I would love to... so which way are we going," She
looked at the three ways. "I say left."
"That sounds great!"
Alden pushed him hard. "That's the way I chose."
Roxie looked to Weya. "Which way did you pick?"
"Straight."
"Then will go that way." She leaned over to her. "That
way the boys don't fight."

The tunnel was dark, and damp and a bit cold. Alton
led the small party. Alden was fussing about no light
till Weya passed one up to him. They quickly lit it
and saw just how big the cave was.
"It's large enough to fit a dragon and a half." Alden
walked from one side to the other counting his steeps.
"That's just wonderful...." Alton sighed.
"Come on lets keep going, we need to find out there
these things are coming from." Roxie pushed one of the
boys.
They continued down the tunnel. Eyes watched as they
went down.

*****

Dante came out of Jason's office, his face red with
frustration and anger. He slammed the door shut and
stomped down the hall. "Grounded!" He vented to
himself and out loud. He didn't care of others heard
him or not. He stomped down to the green and sat on
the stone bench. "I can't believe I'm grounded, till
either him or Thea say different."
*Jacks where are you? *
[Busy....]
*Well you are going to have lots of free time...were
****ing grounded. *
[What did you do now?]
*Don't started lizard.... * He snapped back. *Where's
Weya? *
[Busy...]
*What do you mean busy... where is she? *
Jacks was silent.
*Tell me now Jacks. *
[She's with me and Ishtar.]
*Where are you two at? *
Again Jacks was silent.
*Damn it Jacks! *
He sighed. [We're in the tunnels, under the barracks.]
*What! are you stupid?!*
[She came down here on her own... Roxie, and the twins
are with her.]
*Oh, so it was the twins... they are going to get
someone killed if I don't kill them my self. * Dante
got up and went to get Nightbreed.

*******

[Crap...Ish, my rider is coming down and his not
happy.]
[Should we let the humans know we are here now?]
Jacks nodded his head and leaned down and ****ged Weya,
who let out a little scream. Scaring the boys into a
run and making Roxie jump.
"Jacks... Ishtar... What are you two doing down here?"
Jacks just looked at her, wi****ng he could tell her
Dante was coming.
Alden and Alton walked up to them. "Who are these
two?"
"The green one is Jacks, Dante's dragon. The ebony one
is Ishtar, Akety's dragon."
"That girl is going to kill us when she finds out we
were down here."
"Now that the dragons are with us we can go further."
Alton chirped.

Though the dragons though it was a bad idea, knowing
who was coming they followed them down the tunnel.
There was a slight breeze, but they didn't know from
where. It almost sounded like breath. Alton was
starting to have second thoughts. As they moved down
the cave the breeze started to get warmer.
"We must be close to the sands." Roxie looked up, the
rock above them looked different then the rest.
"It must be, what I don't think any thing else would
cause heat..."
"Well maybe the hot underwater streams." Alden
pointed.
The dragons just looked at each other. Suddenly there
was a howl, it echoed and bounced off the walls. The
hairs on the twin's neck stood up. "What was that!?"
"I don't know..."
"Maybe we should go back...." Alton squeaked.
There was another howl... it was coming from where
they came from. "Run!" Alton screamed and started to
run down the tunnel.
"Alton, no... Don't go any deeper!" Alden yelled as he
ran after him.
"Boys!" Weya yelled after them. She looked to Roxie.
"We should go get them."
"Let's go!" Roxie started after them, Weya close
behind.
Jacks and Ishtar could only follow them, not able to
say a thing.

 [DL-J] Imperial Rescue

/snip from Eddie's post "Magic Of Anger and Anguish/
Keers' upper lip turned slightly at the mention of his father but he
said
nothing. Instead he turned to Tanami. "If we are going to get him out
of here
safely we need to do so quickly. I can get Clowie and I home safely but
you have
the power to get back home much quicker."
/end snip/

Tanami and Clowie had both dropped to one knee and bowed their heads,
as they
had always been taught to do in the imperial presence. The Emperor
cleared
his throat. "You may rise," he said. "And, if someone would not mind,
it
would please me greatly to have these ropes cut."

Baron Kiriisha, who was bound next to the Emperor, piped in that he too
would
like to be released. "Keer, there may be more of them about," Tanami
suggested. "Would you keep watch while Clowie and I free them?"

The two female Kataani worked quickly to free the Emperor and the
Baron.
Toru stood up unsteadily, and Tanami reached out an arm to steady him
even though
she knew this violated imperial protocol. The Emperor gave her a nod
and a
kindly smile, to reassure her that her actions were welcome.

"Death!" Baron Kiriisha snapped as he, too, stood up on unsteady legs.
"We
must learn the identity of the traitor and have him beheaded at once!"

Keer turned and gave the Baron a dark look. "You do not know who the
traitor
is?" he asked incredulously. "If you cannot figure out..." He stopped
as
Tanami held up a hand, warning him to keep his temper in check. Baron
Kiriisha
might seem like little than the Imperial door-opener, but they all knew
he
carried a great deal of authority.

"Majesty, as I am sure you have guessed, Oga is once again the
traitor,"
Tanami said.

"We guessed," Toru said drily. "The only question is, what has he done
while
Kiriisha and I have been out of touch here? Should I expect to find a
new
Emperor - Emperor Oga - on the throne when I return to Neaopi?"

"I don't think you need to worry about," said Clowie, then put a hand
over
her mouth as she remembered who she was speaking to. "I mean...Your
Majesty.
But...Counselor Oga is not at Neaopi. He is at Jasra Warren."

Toru's eyes went wide. "At Jasra? Why in the name of all the seven
seas
would he go there?" The Emperor's brows drew together in thought.
"Oga is a
sea-s****, but he is not stupid. That is why I kept him so close to me
all these
years, to make use of his brains and to keep a close watch on him."

"Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer," Keer agreed.

"If he is at your warren, then it is because he wants something." said
the
Emperor, then a sudden look of alarm crossed his face. "My daughter?
Is she
safe?"

Tanami bit her lip. "I...we...do not know, Your Majesty. I have not
been
back to the warren since the attack began, but the dragons do talk to
one
another across distances. There is word that the Princess is missing."

"Could that be why he went there?" Baron Kiriisha wondered. "To take
the
Princess Kiyomi hostage?"

The Emperor quickly shook his head. "There are many things at work
here," he
said and turned his attention to Keer. "Tanami mentioned an attack. I
need
a re****t, soldier...what sort of attack does she speak of?"

"A major attack," Keer told him. He quickly ticked off some of the
formations from which either he or others from their group had
encountered soldiers.

"At least three different corps, then," the Emperor mused. "I see a
tangled
weave of plots here. Now I begin to understand why Oga did not have us
killed
as I, in his place, would have done."

"Pardon, your Majesty, but...can you tell us exactly what happened to
you?"
Tanami asked.

Toru shook his head ruefully. "Abject carelessness on my part,
cousin," he
told her. "When we left your warren, we did so with a heavy guard.
But I had
failed to notice that fully three-quarters of the officers and men who
made up
the guard were from a group of regiments whose senior officers I had
reason
believe to be in Oga's pay. I had meant to deal with this situation on
my
return to Neaopi - a change of officers, as it were - but as you can
see, it was
not to be. Of a sudden, there was fighting amongst the guards and
those loyal
to me were overcome by superior numbers. Baron Kiriisha and I were
taken
captive and held here until now."

"But now you are free," said Clowie. "Your Majesty, you must come with
us
and order the army to stop attacking!"

"Silence, girl!" the Baron hissed. "Your Majesty, we must return to
Neaopi
and consolidate your position. If we go to the army, we may find
ourselves
prisoners once more!"

"Who commands the army?" Toru demanded.

"Adas received a communication from Keeza, our seadragon queen," said
Keer.
"She saw the leader of the army, and while she did not understand his
speech,
she was able to provide Adas with an image of what he looked like. I
am sure
that it is General ****amo."

"****amo," Toru mused. "This gets ever stranger." He rubbed his chin
thoughtfully, and then looked up again to address his listeners.
"General ****amo is
loyal, I am sure of it," he said. "This means that Counselor Oga used
deception to get the army there, for some reason."

Tanami slapped her forehead. "Ahh...forgive me, Majesty, I forgot to
tell
you...they are demanding your return, and the return of the Princess.
The
soldiers believe you are being held at the warren."

"Which Oga knows is not true, of course," said the Emperor. "Which
means he
wants something else." He considered a moment, and then came to a
decision.
"You must get me to General ****amo, at once!" he told Tanami. "Once
there, I
will ascertain the meaning behind all of this."

Keer stepped forward and bowed. "Your Majesty, I have an errand of my
own
which I must perform. But Tanami and Clowie, with their dragons, can
get you to
the Army's positions quickly enough."

Toru nodded. "You are no longer subject to my commands, Keersach, I
understand this. Do what you must."

The same could not be said for Tanami, who was still his wingsecond,
however.
"You are going to find Dylan?" she asked.

"Yes," he said. "If you've no objections?" His tone made it clear
that even
if she did have objections, it would probably make no difference."

"Go and find her," Tanami said quietly. "And any other riders who are
with
her. If we are not at the warren when you return, then have Adas
contact
Kethriss. We may need you."

Keer nodded and then hurried back to Adas. In moments, they were gone.

Tanami bowed to the Emperor and gestured toward Kethriss. "If it is
your wish,
you may ride with me, Your Majesty," she said. "Clowie and Faragone
may convey
Baron Kiriisha with us, unless it is your wish that he return to
Neaopi."

"No, let us all stay together for the moment," said Toru. "Once we
have
stabilized the situation at the warren, we will worry about Neaopi.
Let us go."

(Tag Eddie, Carys, Alex, or Han - I think it's time we got those riders
off
the island?)

* * * * *
It took only a few minutes to get the Emperor and the Baron strapped to
the
saddles of the two seadragons. Soon they were swimming back out
through the
caves, and into the open ocean. Because they were so far from the
warren,
Tanami decided that they needed to tele****t. On her instructions, the
two
seadragons arrowed up to the surface and leaped above the water like
dolphins. At the
top of their arcs, they disappeared....

....to reappear several miles offshore, where the land was just barely
visible
in the distance. The two dragons continued their downward arcs,
spla****ng
back into the water.

"It is easier to tele****t through the air than through water," Tanami
explained to the Emperor. "And quieter...tele****ting into water makes
so great a
concussion as the water is displaced that the whole army would know of
our
presence."

The Emperor nodded. "You have learned to plan ahead," he observed.
"That is
good. I always knew you had leader****p potential. Had you remained
with us,
you could have...ah, but there is no point in dwelling on that, is
there?"

Tanami was grateful that he did not harp on her leaving Neaopi, as her
father
would have done. Instead, she had the dragons move in toward shore,
just a
few fathoms below the surface. "We are northwest of the warren," she
told the
Emperor. "Kethriss spoke to Loki, who leads the land-dragons. He told
her
there was fighting up here, but that things have quieted down. Perhaps
this is
the safest place for us to approach."

"If there was fighting, then perhaps General ****amo is here," the
Emperor
agreed. "It would be like him. But let us be wary, just the same."

"Look!" said Clowie, pointing ahead of them and a bit to the left.
Tanami
and the Emperor both peered into the murky darkness of the waters and
saw what
human eyes would never have been able to detect at such a distance.
Kataani
soldiers - hundreds of them - were moving in their direction, forming a
living
wall of ****elds and spears.

(Katie or Kris - want to JP this one? Are the soldiers loyal to the
Emperor,
or to Oga? Remember that this is near the place where General Sentari
commanded, and he was most definitely on the wrong side in this!)

(NRPG: Sorry for the long silence - I'm finally at a point where I
think we
can begin to bring this particular story line to a close and move
onward.
However, there are several threads that need to be brought together,
and I am
going to be sending out a couple more posts in the next few days.
Also, I will
send out an updated timeline so everyone knows where we are.

Also, please note - I made a slight change in that I identified the
second
person being rescued as Baron Kiriisha rather than Princess Kiyomi.
This
doesn't change anything in Eddie's post, since since the identity of
the other
prisoner wasn't referred to until the summary. We know that Baron
Kiriisha was
with Toru when he left the warren, so it would make sense for them to
still be
together unless Kiriisha was killed. Plus, Oga would have faced some
logistical
difficulties in smuggling Kiyomi through the army's lines to get her
here,
since she's easily recognizable and the vast majority of the officers
are loyal
to the Emperor.)
