Subject: [DL-W] At the fringes of the party

Day 16
Afternoon

"Yes, you have imposed on Merissa and she would never throw out a
dragonrider -- unless he were to show himself to be a danger to the
warren and its people..." Analise smiled a thin-lipped smile as she
asked sweetly, "You aren't a threat to the peace of this warren, are
you, Ash?"
[end snip]

"That would depend... very much... on whom you asked," Ash
replied. "So far I've been stared at, ridiculed by the landbound,
and nearly attacked by one of your trainers. Just by standing
here."

"Did you expect any different, considering who you are?"
Analise asked.

"That was a long time ago," Ash replied.

"Some people's memories are long. Especially those who were
injured at Geode."

"And I was not myself," Ash said, then shook his head. "That
is neither here nor there. I would not have come, save that
my dragon is ill. It doesn't matter what the people of Whiteriver
think of me. What matters is Wyndamenth."

That softened the bard's expression a little. "How sick is she?"

"It's something I can't explain," Ash said. "She grows stronger
every day. But then again, it may come back to haunt us at
a later time. I pray that it does not." He turned, looked Analise
in the eye.

"You may have seen my coming as an imposition. Perhaps
Merissa does, too. But she didn't see me. She saw a dragon
in need. That was my intention. If I had the chance, I would
hide in my apartments until she recovered. But I realize, as
I'm sure you do, that I cannot. Christalla pardoned me for what
happened at Geode. I am not... will not be... treated as a
felon."

Analise's expression hardened again. "You and your dragon
might suffer because of that ego."

"No. We'll suffer if we run and hide. You must turn and face
fear. Otherwise, it will rule you." He heistated. "I do not plan
to stay and cause more trouble for the rest of you. But I
will stay as long as I need to. And in that time... yes, I will
play. People spoke fondly of my talents here, once."

"Da!" Ari exclaimed with a sudden rush of joy that she had not felt in
some time. "Oh DA!" she cried and hurled herself into his open arms.
The joy evident on his face as he clasped her tightly and swung her
around as they laughed and for a single moment lost in their reunion.

J'red releasing her hand as he saw her begin to lunge. He stood to the
side and watched the endearing display of open affection. He smiled
and
found himself looking back to his own father and watched the various
emotions cross his features. J'red then took a peek at Jennifer as she
stood like stone with her face set in that sneering look she wore on
her
face.

Her distain was evident, and was..the Earl's. In fact J'red thought the
two of them looked like a match set of gargoyles lurking over the
party.
With that thought, he chuckled and returned his gaze back to the scene
that warmed his heart.
[end snip]

Ash'chenon heard the exclamation as well, and turned to watch.
Well, well. Her father had come. Ash shook his head slightly;
this was going to be more than a little interesting. He glanced
in Reginald's direction, knew the Earl was fuming, then back
to his new protege'. No... he would hang back, and let her
handle herself. That had been his intention today, and that was
what he was going to do. Only when she ran into trouble
would he step in. He didn't know what would be done, or
how, but it would be harder on Reginald if he and Ari were
separated. So he waited.

--------

Summary: Ash does a little verbal sparring with Analise, and
states again that he is at Whiteriver for his dragon. Later,
he sees Ari with her father, and decides to watch them from
a distance.
