<snip>

<Tell Khamorray and Riyanne's riders they have to stay here until
Syngnath and his rider come for them.>

Tyler looked at Ansel and Eliase, but he could see that they were
already getting the message from their dragons as he spoke it aloud.

"Then we'd best be going. Are you ready, Dolfis?" Tyler walked over to
his dragon and glared at her, *You could have told Varaenna we were
busy!*

They climbed up onto the multi-colored dragon's back and, waving to
Ansel and Eliase, took off. As soon as they were a safe distance above
the ground Tyler said, "Hold on!" before they tele****ted to Haven.

<end snip>

Eliase watched as Tyler, Dolfis and Plastrya disappeared. She then
looked to Ryianne, wanting to make sure her dragon was ok. Ryianne
reassured her rider and settled onto the sand with a yawn. It was time
for a nap. She curled up and, as only natural, Khamorray curled around
her, snuggling close to the littler dragon.

*You were amazing out there today.* said Khamorray to Ryianne in a
sleepy voice. *The way you talked with those dolphins! I don't think I
know of any sea dragon that can do that.*

Ryianne was pleased with Khamorray's praises and snuggled closer to the
larger dragon. {And you! The way you narrowly avoided those bad sea
people.  You'll have to teach me some of those moves.}

*I will, so soon as we get back. But I think for now sleep is a grand
idea.*

A faint smile appeared on Eliase's face as she felt the contentment of
Ryianne. Feeling the tiredness as well she sat in the sand right where
she had been standing. She lifted her face to the cool breeze coming
off the water and closed her eyes.

"Are you ok?" she heard softly behind her. Eliase blinked, having
totally forgotten that Ansel was even back there. She turned her head
slightly and nodded. "Yeah, just real tired all of a sudden."

Ansel reached to pull her up. "Come on, falling asleep in the sun would
be a bad idea." Eliase let him lead her over to the shade of the
sleeping dragons. There together they settled down and leaned back
against Ryianne.

"Pretty amazing day, huh," offered Ansel as they got comfortable.
Eliase just nodded.

"I'm sort of getting used to them. I think I am ready for a vacation
already." She laughed and Ansel smiled. Something in him was tugged
towards this young woman who seemed fearless. Quickly tho he brushed it
away. He was in love with another woman. The last thing he wanted or
needed was more complications there. He firmly set in his mind the
thought of Eliase as a little sister. Suddenly he realized that she
has asked him something. He blinked and shook his head.

"I'm sorry what?"

"Are you ok?" Eliase's face filled with concern. Ansel chanted in his
mind *sister sister sister*

"Yeah I just got lost there a second. What did you ask?"

"I was just wondering if warren life was always like this? Seems like
ever since I got here and became a rider I have been trying to not get
killed or keep someone I care about from not getting killed."

"Well, it's not always like this. There are long periods of time where
things will get boring." He smirked and Eliase laughed. Then she
yawned.

"I think the dragons have the right idea." She said as she snuggled
into Ryianne.

Ansel nodded to her. "Sleep, I'll keep a watch out."

Eliase nodded and it was only moments before her eyes closed and she
drifted off.

* * * *

Ansel continued watching Eliase as she closed her eyes and nodded off.
She'd done really well today, her and Riyanne both.

[Maybe you ought to tell her that,] Khamorray suggested. [Riyanne
seems to enjoy compliments, so her rider probably would as well.]

Ansel nodded. *When she wakes up,* he promised. Truth was, he wasn't
very good when it came to dealing with women. It had taken him quite a
long time to know how to react to Belarade, and then it had begun
because she really seemed to need someone. That someone had turned out
to be him. Eliase, now...well, she seemed like perhaps she needed
something too.

*Say, I just thought of something,* he said to Khamorray. *Corwin's
been talking about establi****ng patrol teams, just like Alpha Wing has.
I wonder if Eliase and Riyanne would want to be partnered with us?*

[I don't know,] Khamorray said. [Do you want me to ask Riyanne?]

*Um, no, why don't you hold off on that?* Ansel told him quickly.
After all, it was Corwin's decision, not his.

[Well, but, Syngnath's rider would surely want to know what his riders
and dragons would prefer, wouldn't he?] Khamorray wanted to know.

*I guess, but what if Eliase doesn't want to be partnered with us?*
Ansel asked.

[Hm, then she can tell you no?] Khamorray remarked. [Look, what if I
just ask Riyanne, then that will save you the embarrassment of...]

*I'm not embarrassed to ask,* he protested.

[Then why don't you?]

*Well, for one thing, because I think she's asleep,* Ansel pointed out.

Of course, that was only one reason, and it wasn't the most im****tant
one. The most im****tant one was that, if they were patrol partners,
they'd eventually draw long patrols together that would take them far
out to sea away from the warren. None of the details had been worked
out, of course, because the dragons of Riyanne's clutch were still
relatively new to the wing. And, of course, there was the war that had
begun this morning. So much had happened in only one day - would there
even be a Maritime Wing a few days from now?

Still, he had to admit to himself, it would be nice, Eliase would make
a good partner. And Riyanne's ability to talk to the dolphins would be
a big asset too, which up till now only certain of the Kataani had been
able to accomplish. That factor might be a complication, he thought,
since Corwin might want such a talent kept where he could make use of
it.

[He doesn't need that,] Khamorray reminded him. [Kethriss' rider can
do the same thing, and I think so can Adas' rider.]

Ansel nodded, and looked at Eliase. He idly wondered when Corwin would
come to retrieve them and bring them back to the warren? Well, it
would probably be awhile before she or Riyanne woke up, so that gave
him a little time to think.

[I'm bored,] Khamorray decided.

****

In this few minutes of sleep Eliase's dreams to her far away from
Jasra. They took her to her home and her family. To thoughts of her
younger days. In her dreams she felt the warmth of her loved ones next
to her. In reality that warmth was Ansel. Still sleeping she reached
to wrap her arms around him and snuggled close to him. She missed her
family so much and she, in that moment, felt so close to them.

Ansel blinked as Eliase's arm s****d around him. "Um..." he began,
then caught himself. If he spoke, he'd wake her up, and this could
lead to a rather embarrassing situation for both of them. Then again,
whether she woke up now or later, it would all be the same...and he had
to admit, it did feel very good. He could pretend to be asleep, of
course...

[I'm bored,] Khamorray repeated. [Lets do something.]

Ansel turned his head fractionally to make eye contact with the
seadragon. *Then you'll have to stay bored a bit longer,* he said. *I
have a situation here...* Khamorray snorted and fidgeted impatiently.

All Eliase knew was that she was warm and with someone. In her dreams
that someone was family of course. Someone her heart connected with.
It wasn't a particular time or place or even situation. It was just a
feeling of warmth, love and safety. With those emotions she slowly
blinked her eyes open and looked up into Ansel's eyes.

"Um...hi..." he said, realizing that he hadn't thought quickly enough.
"You...um..ah...were starting to slump over, so...I...um, reached out
to catch you." To emphasize the point, he moved a bit so that his arm
was in position to sup****t her, then made a show of removing it. He
found himself wi****ng it had gone a bit longer, though. "I'm sorry if
I startled you."

"You didn't." She smiled, her arms still wrapped around him. Then she
suddenly realized her arms were around a man who was with another
woman. She pulled back and brushed her hair out of her face.

"I'm sorry. It was very kind of you to keep me from falling into the
sand." She smiled and held his gaze for a long moment before looking
away.

Khamorray, meanwhile, was getting ever more bored lying still. He moved
just a bit, and since Riyanne was leaning against him the smaller
seadragon tipped over onto her side a bit so she was again leaning on
him. And since both Ansel and Eliase had been leaning against
Riyanne's side, they both lost their balance as well. Instinctively,
Ansel threw his arms around Eliase to steady and protect her.
Fortunately, they only fell backward a couple of feet before bumping
against Riyanne's underside. Ansel blinked in surprise again, as he
realized where his arms were. He gave Eliase a bewildered look.
"Uh...ah..." He cleared his throat, wondering what to say next.

All Eliase could do was laugh. "That's what we get for making our
dragons sit still for more than five minutes." Eliase felt the rush of
heat at his arms around her, but she ignored it. It was only natural
to feel attracted to an attractive young man. She carefully extracted
herself from his arms and sat up.

"Belarade is a very lucky woman to have such a gentleman in love with
her." She then intent began to brush sand from her legs.

"Yes, I am lucky," he agreed wistfully, helping her to brush the sand
off. "Just like I'm lucky to have someone like you to work with.
Look, I don't remember if I told you, but...well, you and Riyanne did
really well today. We couldn't have succeeded without you."

Eliase blushed brightly, tho from his complement or from his hand
stroking her leg she was not sure. "Umm, thanks," she replied softly,
not meeting his gaze.

Khamorray directed a thought to Riyanne. [Humans certainly have
difficulty in talking to one another, don't they?] The younger
seadragon wordlessly acknowledged his comment, as they both continued
to watch their riders. Khamorray decided to liven things up just a
tad, slipping his tailtip into the water and flicking it upward,
sending a shower of seawater onto all of them.

Ansel threw his arms up, then tried to interpose himself between Eliase
and the water to keep her dry. All this accomplished was for him to
fall flat on the sand just before the water showered down onto them.
"Sorry!" he told Eliase as he hit the sand.

Eliase laughed and shook her head. "I learned that you can't hold a
rider accountable for his dragon's actions." This earned her a smaller
shower from Ryianne. She laughed again and stood.

"Well I am thinking someone wants us to get wet." With that she turned
and stepped the few feet to the beach. She stripped down to her
underthings and dove into the ocean.

Ansel didn't bother to strip down. He knelt down at the waters edge,
motioning with his arms for both dragons to look at him. Then he
scooped up a double handful of water at both of them, and charged off
into the water after Eliase. Both dragons quickly followed, plunging
into the waves with a great splash.

Eliase swam out until she couldn't touch and then bobbed there,
watching the dragons swim out and past her. She smirked at Ansel as he
swam up beside her. "Somehow I don't think spla****ng water on them has
the same effect as them spla****ng on us."

Ansel chuckled. "Nope, probably not, considering that they both live
in and breathe salt water." He was interrupted as a dragon snout came
up under him, lifting him out of the water. Eliase cried out in
surprise as the same thing happened to her.

[Rider toss!!!] the two dragons called out simultaneously, and Ansel
found himself tumbling through the air as Khamorray flipped him.
Riyanne expertly caught him on the tip of her own snout, and he saw
Khamorray do the same thing with Eliase. A moment later, the two were
once again passing each other in midair. "This wasn't what I had in
mind!" he called out to her as they passed.

Eliase could only laugh as they were tossed between then dragons. As
she landed back on Riyanne's nose she was quick to dive off before the
dragon could pass her back. She dove into the water and swam some
distance off before surfacing. She turned back just in time to see
Ansel dive into the water and watch Khamorray and Ryianne start a
rather playful game of tag with each other.

"Well, that's a relief!" said Ansel, reaching out a hand to Eliase. He
was about to suggest they head for shore when he saw a several fins
circling around them. "Hey, why don't you have your dragon ask a
couple of these dolphins to give us a ride?"

Eliase ran her hand over one of the dolphins back as it swam past. She
looks to Ansel with a playful glance. "What you are tired already. You
can't swim back to shore alone." With a challenging glimmer in her eye
she took off swimming for shore.

Ansel laughed. Well, even without dragon assistance, the dolphin knew
what he wanted as he slapped his palm down onto the water a couple of
times. The dolphin let him take hold of its dorsal fin, and by motions
of his free hand he was able to show it where he wanted to go. The
dolphin squeaked happily and lurched into motion, with Ansel holding on
for dear life as it towed him through the water. Ansel and the dolphin
zoomed in toward shore, passing Eliase and then cutting in front of
her. Ansel waved and laughed as they streaked by her, leaving a
foaming wake behind them.

Khamorray, meanwhile, decided to play a different version of tag. He
surfaced right underneath Riyanne, so that the smaller seadragon was
sprawled across his back and completely out of the water. [Tag!] he
laughed at her.

Ryianne squirmed. {Cheater! No fair using your *size* against me!!}

Elise swam the rest of the way to the shore and moved to sit next to
Ansel, who was sitting just on the edge of the water. She poked him on
the arm and echoed her dragon. "Cheater."

Ansel grinned. "Not at all," he told her, giving her own arm a return
poke. "I just used what was available at the moment!" He sighed
inwardly, wi****ng Eliase was 'available.' On the one hand, his
upbringing was that when you made a commitment to one person, you made
it to that person alone...but the warren outlook on life was different.
He wasn't sure which to believe, but for the moment continued to
believe it was safer if he continued to think of her as his 'little
sister.' One got into less trouble that way.

Khamorray laughed at Riyanne's predicament. He arched his back
suddenly, and then tilted first to the right and then to the left, so
that she had to hold on to keep her position. [I learned this from
Leviathan, he's a LOT bigger than me, or even Keeza or Varaenna! He's
real good at stuff like this!]

Ryianne squealed in laughter as Khamorray rocked her back and forth.
Then with a sudden burst of energy she lifted off his back and into the
air. {Catch me if you can!}

Eliase leans close to Ansel and began to tickle him. "You cheated and
you know it. Just admit it!"

Ansel laughed, trying to squirm away from her. "Haha!! Hey, no
fair!!!" He pushed back with his arms to try and hold her at bay, but
she went at him relentlessly. "I...haha...didn't...hahaha....cheat!!
hahaha!!!"

Khamorray caught hold of Riyanne's hind leg as she lifted off, keeping
her from escaping despite the frantic pumping of her wings. With her
forward momentum stopped, she splashed into the water along with him.

Feeling the tickling sensation through Ansel Khamorray also started to
squirm. [You're still it!] he laughed, for he still had hold of her
leg. He would have released her and swam away to continue the game at
that point, but observing the two riders on the beach he decided to
give Ansel a hand. Or in this case, a tongue, as he worked his tongue
in between Riyanne's toes to tickle the delicate webbed membranes
there.

Through their connection Eliase could feel the tickling and she began
to laugh just as Ryianne did. For a few moments Eliase straddled
Ansel's chest as she tickled him. But it wasn't long before she could
no longer bear the tickling of Ryianne. With a gasp she threw up her
hands. "I give up!" Then she flopped down on top of Ansel panting
lightly.

[And do you give up??] Khamorray wanted to know, as his tongue
continued to tickle Riyanne while the two dragons struggled in a patch
of seawater that was beaten to white froth by their spla****ng.

Ansel was completely breathless too. "I think...Corwin...is going to
think...we're all...crazy...!" he told her, and hugged her tightly.
For the moment, all thoughts of propriety were forgotten.

Eliase snuggled close to him. "I don't care...sometimes I feel...like
just being..crazy."

{I give up! I give up!} Khamorray let go of Ryianne and both dragons
turned to look over at Ansel and Eliase.

{Well don't they just look the cute couple.}

[Hmm...that looks a lot more interesting,] Khamorray commented.
Riyanne nodded her head in agreement as they watched the goings-on at
the beach.

"I do too," Ansel said. "I was brought up not to be, but...sometimes
living around a warren, well...things seem different, you know?"

Eliase tipped her head up and smiles at Ansel. "Yeah, I know." He
smiled back at her and for a moment they were lost in each other's
eyes. Without even thinking about it Eliase felt herself leaning closer
to Ansel. Her eyes fluttered closed and she could feel his breath on
her lips.

Then, suddenly she felt a strong breeze and heard the flapping of
dragon wings. She gasped and scrambled off Ansel as Corwin appeared
above them. Even more quickly she got dressed again, just in time for
Corwin to land some feet from them.
