Subject: [DL-W] Undercover Agent
Day 17
Morning
Merissa's Office
Merissa poured another cup of tea and handed it across to the older
woman who had just settled herself onto a straight-backed chair that
Merissa normally reserved for those she wished to make uncomfortable,
but in Tatiana's case, was her personal choice of seating. She had once
told Merissa that those soft, cushy chairs made people weak.
Merissa didn't feel weak, but she preferred a more comfortable location
and settled back onto the sofa. But Merissa didn't relax, and her eyes
were fearful to look at, blazing with passion and anger. "Yes, Th'rin
is pretty sure it was something in the tea. In fact, he gave some to a
rat and it keeled over...."
Tatiana clicked her tongue but didn't answer.
Merissa continued, "So it is murder, but why, I don't know. I can
understand someone trying to kill me..." She laughed nervously, "But I
can't imagine someone trying to kill an old healer like Corra. She
wasn't even a dragonrider."
"Perhaps... she knew too much."
"Corra? What could she have known? And about what?"
"The warren, you, perhaps? Or... the murderer." Tatiana shrugged. "And
she had the missing pages of Latnem's journal."
Merissa nodded and sighed. "If only Corra wasn't dead...."
Tatiana's eyes widened and she began to smile a dangerous smile that
made Merissa's blood turn to ice. "And if she did know too much, and
she weren't dead, the murderer would want to make sure that they
finished the job."
Merissa blinked, "I suppose so..."
"How many people know that she is dead?" Tatiana asked.
"Just those of us at the table when Xanthia returned with the news. I
told them all to keep it to themselves as I didn't want to upset any of
the guests, or ruin Ari's big night -- not until we knew the facts."
"And how many know the facts?"
"Just Th'rin and myself... I haven't told Xanthia, yet."
"Good." Tatiana snapped her fingers on her good hand.
"Good?" Merissa looked surprised.
"Don't tell anyone else, and those that know should be told that Corra
is ill."
"Ill?"
"Yes, and in the medical center. I've got a few riders whom I know to
be trustworthy... we'll have them stationed about the medical center to
keep an eye open... though ideally we should have someone play the part
of Corra."
"Tatiana, I'm not so sure...."
"Merissa, this needs to be done. And done quickly. If we delay, then
the murderer might be suspicious. Now we just need someone to play the
part of Corra..."
[SNIP]
"Yes, I agree. And I think you should get to the med center right
away."
"Me?!?" The older woman sputtered.
"You said yourself it needs done."
"But, Merissa..." The older woman argued. She turned and saw Xanthia
standing in the doorway with a new person and shook her head.
"The sooner the better, just as you said," Merissa finalized gently.
The older woman sighed with resignation and headed for the door.
"Are you all right?" Xanthia asked with concern.
"Merissa will explain it to you," the older woman replied as she
exited.

Summary:
Day 17
Morning
Merissa and Tatiana discuss the murder of Corra and a way to set a trap
for the murderer.
NRPG: I know it's short, but wanted to add to the wonderful idea that
Morgie came up with.
