[DL-W] Don't Name Names
Day 17 - Early Afternoon
<<SNIP from "[DL-W] Getting Settled, A Set Up and Setting up Camp">>
"I know those markings, and they belong to the house of Fowler."
"Fowler? But who in that household would shoot a bear for s****t?"
"I don't know. But perhaps we should find out."
<<END SNIP>>
Xanthia nibbled on her index finger pensively for a couple of minutes
before Merissa reached over and gently moved her hand from her mouth.
Merissa patted Xanthia's hand reassuringly, recognizing the stress in
the
troubled expression on her friend's face.
"Does Jennifer hunt?" Xanthia asked at last.
Merissa chuckled, "Jennifer? No. not hardly."
She smiled as Alina babbled happily to herself and handed the toddler
another cookie.
"Because," Xanthia continued with furrowed brow, now twisting the end
of one of her braids in a rhythmic motion, "See, the thing of it is..."
"Yes?" Merissa prompted, taking a sip of her tea.
"Well, it just doesn't fit. Lord Fowler seems so nice, and, well, then
there's J'red."
"And J'red doesn't seem nice?" Merissa asked.
"No, no!" Xanthia protested, "Quite the opposite! I'm just saying, he
is a Fowler, too, and I just didn't picture him for the type that would
shoot for s****t and then not put the beast out of it's misery. And if
it is him, then... well, then he's not the man I thought he was."
Merissa nodded, "Yes, I can tell this is quite upsetting for you."
"Not just me, let me tell you! All of us! Dru'Kar was quite livid, as
you can imagine, especially with it being a *bear*, the most sacred of
creatures to a Bear Nomad."
"Dru'Kar..." Merissa mused. "Well, remember, we don't know for certain
yet. It would be best not to voice any suspicions until I do some
investigating and find out more."
Xanthia nodded uncertainly. She didn't like keeping secrets.
"It's just..." Merissa continued, "You know how these Bear Nomads, the
men at least, seem to have a penchant for retribution. Remember what
happened to the man who raped you..."
Xanthia fell silent. To her mind, the rapist deserved far worse, though
she didn't dare voice that. Finally she broke the silence, "Well, that
was a long time ago, and a different person."
"You really think Dru'Kar would have done any different?"
"He would have gotten worse from Dru'Kar," Xanthia admitted. That
knowledge gave her a grim sense of satisfaction.
"Exactly. So let's just not tell Dru'Kar until we know who did it,
okay?"
"Maybe someone stole the arrows, or maybe it was a servant," Xanthia
conceded.
"Yes," Merissa said, relieved that Xanthia was finally seeing the
light, "There could be many explanations. That's why it would be best
you not mention any names."
"May I at least tell him you're looking into it?"
"Of course you may."
"Okay, well, I guess then I'll leave you be so you can do that. Thank
you I'll go let Dru'Kar know you're checking into it."

SUMMARY:
DAY 17 - Early Afternoon:
Merrissa and Xanthia chat about the killed bear. Xanthia voices the
possibilities that already crossed Merissa's mind when she's told that
it's the Fowler's markings on the arrow. After Xanthia tells Merissa
how it outraged Dru'Kar, Merissa works to convince Xanthia not to tell
Dru'Kar until they know for certain, reminding Xanthia of the tendency
of Bear Nomads to have a penchant for brutal vengeance.
NRPG:
I meant to make this longer, but I kind of ran out of steam. Sorry it's
so
short.

Day 17, Early Afternoon
Aeryth had had to force herself to bite back a protest when Merissa had
gone, leaving her in the keeping of this gruff older man. The
warrenlady was one of the few people she'd met who hadn't made her feel
nervous or ill at ease, although she wasn't certain she wanted the
woman to recognize her or not from her time at school. Still, she
didn't want give a poor first impression on her first day here and seem
incompetent and it was bad enough that she had let her mind wander
earlier. It was with relief that she turned her attention to the map
that Pav'lo had spread out before her.
<~Oriana, do you have a preference of apartment? Or can I just pick
one?~> she asked her dragon as she perused the map, noting with a bit
of dismay just how many other riders there were here. All those new
people to meet and deal with. She was hard put to keep from sighing.
Oriana sent a feeling of reassurance as she answered her rider. <~Not
really. Let me guess, you want one of the ones that's higher up and a
bit isolated. Am I right, my rider?~>
Aeryth smiled slightly at the tone of her dragon's voice, forgetting
for a moment that Pav'lo was still standing in front of her. <~That
*is* what I was thinking, but I suppose if you prefer we could be a bit
nearer the others. If most of them are like Merissa, I think I could
learn to like it here very much. She *is* very nice.~>
<~You would do that for me, my rider?~> Oriana sounded genuinely
pleased. <~Thank you. That would be nice. But make sure it is somewhere
you will be comfortable also.~>
Pav'lo had stood patiently during the whole silent exchange, having
recognized the look on Aeryth's face while she communicated with her
dragon. He had also been watching the way she looked at the map. It was
as if she was torn between staying as far away from others as possible,
from the way her eyes had lingered on those apartments more isolated,
and wanting to be closer to them. "Well?" he asked when she blinked and
focused again.
Aeryth nearly jumped, and did actually start a bit, at hearing his
voice. "What? Oh, sorry. I was just asking my dragon about her
preference," she said quietly, though she was proud of the fact that
she'd managed to get a whole sentence out without stuttering around a
man. "I was thinking of perhaps this one," she indicated her choice
with her finger, pointing at one of the apartments higher up in the
cliff face. One that would give her plenty of privacy, but was probably
within shouting distance of the ledges of the nearest occupied ones.
"As long, that is, as it has a bed and furniture," she ventured shyly.
[tag: Arlene - she's making a real effort here!]
***
A bit later
The problem of an apartment settled, and with an armload of bedding and
such from Pav'lo, Aeryth headed back out to the green where she'd left
Oriana. As she walked, she decided she was rather proud of the way
she'd handled herself, apart from her spacing out in Marissa's office.
She'd stayed calm and collected in the presence of a strange man, and
she found that very reassuring. Maybe coming here was the best thing
that could have happened after all.
<~Apart from joining with me.~> Oriana sounded smug.
<~Yes, love. Apart from that, of course.~> Aeryth smiled as she mounted
the dragon and directed her to their new home. <~You are, without a
doubt, the best thing that's ever happened to me. And as soon as I get
you unloaded, you can go and meet the other dragons while I get
settled.~>
<~That would be really nice.~>
They landed and Aeryth took a moment to walk inside and look around.
The apartment was more than spacious enough for her and had plenty of
room to store all her instruments and things. And the bathing room was
wonderful as well. Though she would need to go and ask Pav'lo about
candles and such later. She hurried back to Oriana and began unloading
the dragon, taking care with her instruments and everything breakable,
but simply tossing the rest in the general direction of inside. When
she finished, she caressed the dragon's neck lovingly and then pointed
her in the direction of the ledge.
<~Go ahead. Go make some friends. I'll call you when this guide I was
promised shows up. Otherwise you'll just be in the way while I try to
get organized.~> She made a face at Oriana.
The dragon snorted. <~As if you could *ever* be organized,~> she said
as she took off, looking for other dragons to talk to.
Aeryth just laughed and went back inside, beginning to unpack and put
things away. She had no idea when her guide would show up and she
wanted to be at least mostly done before they arrived.
[tags: anyone with dragons who'd want to talk to the newcomer, and
whoever is going to play guide for Aeryth :)]
****************************
Summary: Aeryth meets with Pav'lo and selects an apartment. She even
tries to make a joke! Then she heads to her new home to get settled in
while Oriana goes to meet the other dragons of the Warren. She is also
waiting for whoever is going to show her around to arrive.
