Subject: [DL-W] Getting the Feet Wet in Muddy Water

Day 17, Early Afternoon

-Snip-
"That is very good news," the man answered, "But as far as supplies...
you would have to talk to my foreman, Bubba. He'd know if we were
running low on anything." The carnie master looked around and caught
the eye of a boy who was carrying some buckets into the main tent,
"Boy!
You know the foreman. Take this dragonrider to meet him."

Matt nodded. It wasn't much of a question as it was an order. "He's
right this way."

-End Snip-

Matt lead the young dragon rider, attemping to engage him in
conversation. The arrogant rider ignored Matt entirely, instead looking
around at the set up of the carnival. Frowning, Matt thought about
teaching the young rider in a lesson or two about politeness, but
decided that might be a bad idea, simply because of the large dragon he
saw keeping an eye on the young man from the edge of the fair ground.
They came around the animal cages and found Bubba explaining to a
worker how he wanted the cages placed. When he saw Matt, thier eyes
locked a moment and there was a silent challenge, then Bubba ****fted
his look and smiled at Jael.

Bubba looked over the dragonrider and walked over to him.

"Bubba," he introduced and extended his hand. "How can we be of
service to you this day?" he asked sincerely. He looked back over to
the young boy that had escorted him and smiled, altho the warmth never
reached his eyes.....

"I came here to see if you needed anything." Jael replied not as
sullenly as before, the respect he heard in the man's address put him
at ease. Yes, he was still respected, as he should be, too bad not
everyone saw what the others did.

Bubba nodded and smiled warmly. He knew the procedure, the welcoming
committee would show up later, this one was sent ahead to make sure all
was well.

"I think we are fine for the moment." Bubba answered. "I thank
you for taking time out of your busy schedule to make a personal
appearance Commander. Not many would, they would send another. It makes
me feel good to know that the ways of the rider are still being
practice."

Jael bristled for a moment until he realized he thought HE was the
commander. Not that he could not be one...he had just the same amount
of talent as.....except he was NOT a lord's son....having the
position handed to him.

Jael laughed at the absurd situation he found himself in. "I'm not
the Commander, and yes some of us still try to keep the code of the old
ways....but it is a dying member****p." Jael answered with an equal
mixture of sadness and bitterness.

Bubba nodded and clapped his hand on his shoulder as one would with a
comrade.

"Well, I'm honored to meet one of the members." He replied
warmly. Bubba glanced and noticed the boy was still standing
there....quietly observing the interaction between them.

He did not really have anything against the boy.....well....not that he
could quite put his fingers on....but he did bear watching. He turned
to the boy and smiled.

"Was there anything else?" he asked simply. "If not, you can join
us....as we hash over the old days." Bubba laughed good naturedly.

Jael smiled and nodded. Yes, this would be great, to talk about the
days when those around him valued him and his talents. Maybe this was
not so bad after all.....better than returning to the stables and
stalls to muck out the hay.

Matt considered for a moment, then shook his head. "No, thats alright
sir, there is still alot of work to do. Maybe later." Nodding to Jael,
he turned on his heel and walked away from them.

Nearing the edge of the carnival ground, Matt turned a corner and hit a
tall something face first. He stumbled backwards, his and going up to
hold together his split lip. "Hey idiot, why don't you........ oh boy."
he trailed off, his eyes staring right into the scaly chest of a
dragon. He looked up, craning his neck far too look into the eyes.
"Um....excuse me.... my mistake...."

Turning around quickly, he walked around the corner and back into the
fairgrounds. Looking over his shoulder he saw a ****mmering scaled head
watching him from over the top of the tent. Shaking his head, Matt
grabbed a piece of cloth from his pocket and held it to his lip,
walking for a few minutes before he found more work to do. Shoving the
cloth back in his pocket, he looked once more over his shoulder. Seeing
no dragon, he laughed quietly, then ****mmied up the thin pole with the
rope in his hand.

------------------------------------------------------

Summary- Jael inquires wether or not the carnival owner needs any
supplies, and is directed to the headman Bubba, by route of Matt, who
just happens to be passing by. Very quickly Jael alienates Matt with
his arrogant attitude, and Matt very nearly decides to teach this young
upstart some manners. They meet up with Bubba, who hits if off with
Jael right away. At this point, he opens the proverbial door for Matt,
inviting him to stay and talk with the two, but Matt refuses, saying
there is more work to do. And the plot thickens....
