Subject: [DL-W] A stolen glimpse
Day 17
Late Afternoon
Bright, gaudy fabrics fluttered in the breeze as the carnival set up
their tents and arranging the gaily-painted wagons and cages in a
broken circle. Bronze skinned, rough looking men, stripped out of
their ****rts under the late afternoon sun, were building benches that
climbed upwards like stairs, staking down the tents, and hauling
buckets of water. There were few women, though an older lady, wearing
a green and gold kerchief over her silver streaked black hair, was
directing a tall, pale-skinned young man as he tied up a banner in
front of a purple tent with gold embroidered moons and stars.
Jilly couldn't read what the banner said, but she could see the
outline drawing of a hand next to the word. She was supposed to be
back at Johanna's shop in an hour. The seamstress had recently taken
over Brenam Sableshoe's old tailor shop and had sort of hired Jilly
on to help her out stocking merchandise and cutting patterns. She had
the hour to herself, and she was supposed to grab a late lunch at the
dining hall, but the temptation to come check out the newly arrived
carnival was too great to resist.
Edging closer to the chaotic proceedings, Jilly peeked between the
tents. The men had roped off a large perimeter to the encampment to
keep people out while they made ready and practiced their acts for the
show. She hadn't yet crossed that rope, but it wasn't too hard to
peek around and catch glimpses here and there of wonders she'd never
seen before. She saw a strange creature that looked a lot like a small
ugly baby, but with dark black-brown fur and long limbs hanging by a
tail that curled around the wood branch in it's cage sitting in one
of the caged wagons. The animal chittered as it swung from it's own
tail. She saw a man standing on the back of a small horse, balancing
as it galloped around the circular enclosure while another man clapped
a steady rhythm. She heard a loud crack and a roaring bellow from one
of the rear tent areas, and a foreign sounding man shouted in some
harsh, guttural language.
Suddenly curious what had made that loud sound, Jilly moved around the
tents towards the back, past a milling group of young boys from the
warren who were aiming to get a free peek before the show. Once in the
back, she let her eyes search for the source of the sound. Another
loud crack and another pained-sounding bellow rewarded her. There was
a large tent, striped in green and yellow, set up in the back. The
sound had come from there. There was no way to see inside though, or
so she thought. Then she noticed the loose ties at the bottom of the
tent where the back panel and the left side tied around the corner pole
to make. A breeze caught the edge of the tent and flapped it open.
Jilly dropped to her knees in the grass and dirt and turned her head to
the side to peer into the slight opening. It wasn't terribly bright
inside, but a lantern inside revealed a heavyset, moustached man in a
loose, dirty linen ****rt and black trousers with a short whip in his
hand. In the tent with him was large cage wagon, the door open. On
the dirt ground in front of him was a dark lump of a creature, bound
with a metal chain to the cage. The moustached man barked more
guttural words and lashed the animal with his whip. Jilly flinched,
and so did the animal, who raised a snout into the air and bellowed in
pain again. She watched the bear try to get up on its hind legs, but
when it fell back down, the man raised the lash again.
Jilly had seen enough. Her heart was aching for the poor creature, and
she wasn't about to let such abuse continue. She jumped up and
tried to think who the best person would be to re****t this to. She
still didn't know many people here in the warren. She hadn't even
seen Gob lately. The only person she could think of that might have
the authority to stop the problem would be the warrenlady herself.
Jilly took off running towards the queenrider offices.
[...]
The door to the warrenlady's office was open, but Jilly stopped short
at the opening, and sucked in a ragged breath, her heart thundering
from the run and the fear. "Miss Merissa! Can ya help? I didn't
know who else t' tell. Them carny people that's setting
up...they're beating their animals. I saw one of 'em take a whip
after a poor bear that was too bad off even to get up off the ground.
You've got to stop them, ma'am!"

MD 4:1151 Holodeck 2
It took only a few minutes for the Arch to reappear and admit the trio
of officers. Conner, Georgi, and Reed stepped inside the holodeck
where the Contadora program was running.
"Ok Sandleson, what seems to be the problem!"
Sandleson stepped aside, giving Van a clear view of the three arrivals.
They stopped short, apparently in shock. Georgi grinned hugely, and
the captain looked her up and down. Conner mostly looked perplexed.
"Van, is that really you?" The captain broke the moment of silence.
"Sort of, Captain." She put her hands on her hips. "I'm
actually in the program itself, not here in the holodeck. I'm not
sure how to explain it, since I'm still trying to figure out how that
AI managed it. Where's Petty Officer Kendrell?" The arch slid
open again and Kendrell slipped inside, carrying a scanner.
"Lieutenant?" The Petty Officer blinked against the bright
sun****ne and white beach.
"Oh good. We've got to figure out how to get me out of this
program. If we check the trans****t records..."
"There is no record of you being trans****ted, Lieutenant. When you
disappeared, we checked the records to see if you'd left the ****p.
There was no record of you being trans****ted." Kendrell stepped
forward, raising the scanner in front of the Chief Engineer and
checking the readout. The petty officer's face screwed up in an
expression of puzzlement. "Ens. Conner, what do you make of this?"
Conner stepped forward to look at the scanner display. Glancing up at
Van who was regarding them both with an arched brow, the science
officer spoke. "Computer, freeze program."
The Contadora program froze as commanded. The ocean stopped moving in
mid wave, the palm trees ceased trembling in the breeze, and everything
went silent and still. Van was frozen in position, one brow still
arched, her hands on her hips, her lips parted as though about to
speak, a single tendril of damp dark hair caught twisting on the wind,
now solidly stuck. Her chest didn't rise to take a breath and her
eyes didn't blink. Like the rest of the program she was paused.
"Well, that there's just creepy." Georgi wrapped her arms around
herself and frowned up at the frozen woman.
"Computer, resume program." Conner's command immediately
restarted the program, bringing Van back to life as well as the sounds
of the surf and the breeze in the rustling trees.
"DON'T do that again!" Van took a step in Conner's direction,
looking ready to throttle the science officer. Instead she pulled the
PADD from his hands to check the readings for herself.
"Georgi, do you have a copy of this program on file somewhere, or the
original version? I think it might help us sort this out?"

The captain, the counselor and the science officer arrive to see Van in
her knickers and s****ts bra, then petty officer Kendrell arrives with a
scanner and scans Van. Kendrell shows the results to Conner who
experiments by freezing the program, and Van, then unfreezing it. Van
asks Georgi for a clean version of the Contradora Island program.

Subject: [DL-N] I can stop this.
Day 8 morning
As Justin closes in on Sara, and her dragon. A blue dragonett starts to
move in.
{Where are you going?}
<I can stop him! Now how did Mommy say to breath fire? Oh yeah.>
The little blue dragon wreared his head back, sucked in a deep breath,
and let loose.........

Nothing came out....
<What happened? Why didn't I breath fire on him? Nothing happened. Now
I can't save them.>
Woodlenn cudled up his saddened baby on his lap, stroking his scally
neck.
{It's ok. You just need to eat some coal. My you are a brave one are
you not?}
The dragon and his rider sighed as they whatch knowing there was
nothing they could do.
.......Mean while....
<Ranker?>
{What is it now?}
<You must come to the cavern quick....>
{I don't care about baby dragons or this hatching I won't find them
cute.}
<No it's not that this man....Justin....that's what he's call is
attacking the baby's, and some lil girl, oh and your "Sweety". So
please hurry.>
With a hint of disappointment, and much fury for a man that attacks the
defenclessness of youth Ranker replies.
{I'm sorry I can't get out of this cell. Don't worry Breezy will take
care of him. That girl could take down a dragon single handely.}
.......Later that day at the dinning hall.......
As most of the others where getting kinda ill at the sight of the
dragons eating Woodlenn on the other hand found it quite ammusing, and
very stimulating to watch.
{Good, good, eat up so tomarrow we can try to get you to breath fire. I
have lived here my whole life, and know much about dragons. Together,
and with the trainers we can get you breathing fire in no time.}
<Good. Right a way I wanna learn.> He said while pu****ng the bloody
bucket for more.
So the hooded man got up and went to fill it.

Subject: [DL-N] WOW what excitment!
Day 8 dawn
As all the trainee's and thier clutchmates ran through the streets,
Semaj just would not be quiet.
<Wow look Cornard at all the humans!>
{Yes I see them.} He replied feeling all the excitment coming from his
new friend.
Then the blue beast stopped right in frount of the dining hall. A
couple of the runners almost fell over them.
<Oooohhh! Smell that? It smells yummy! I'm so hungry, lets eat what
ever it is.>
{Wait one minute.} Woodlenn scolded. {You just can not go in there,
plus remember we are in a chase.} He said calmer.
<Ooohh yeah, I almost forgot, but so hungry. Oh well I eat
later......yeah running again!>
Back on the trail of the ****ny black dragonett. as they ran past the
merchents, again Semaj stops.
<WOW! What are the giving away, can I eat it, just one real quickly?>
{Sorry my friend that is not food. It is decerations, and clothes for
humans. Maybe later I will get some, but for now lets catch up with the
others.}
<Oh yeah lets go!>
.......mean while back at the prison......
Ranker is just sitting wondering where his food is.
"Damn! That girl is never late!" He sits back on the cot thinking to
himself. [Really I just miss her. Even though she never talks, and she
always storms out of here like a bat out of hell yelling at me for no
apperant reson. She is the only human company that I get that is some
what nice. I miss Dizzie some much too. I wonder how she's doing.]
<Ranker! Ranker!>
{Yeah budy what do you want today?}
They hatched, the eggs that is. Oh thier so beutiful they all got new
friends too. Right now we are all chasing the new "Queen" some of my
friends call her. They are a lil scared that this one is "curse" so
thier riders are saying. I wish you could see her. She's just beut....>
{Woh! Calm down, your going to pass out.}
<Oh sorry. It's just so exciting to me. I can't remember my hatching
much anymore, and that's the only one I have ever seen.>
{Yes I know. Well you go have fun with your friends.}
[Maybe I should start being a little nicer to the people here. I mean
Kautiv really is making good with the other dragons here, and he does
need to be with his kin. I have nowhere else to go either. Ok it's
settled I will mind my manners for now on, and be nicer to everyone
expecially Breezy, and not just because I like her, but Because she
runs the show. If I befriend her, then I can befriend anyone. Plus I
would like to get to know delila "I think that's her name" better too,
and she won't trust me if I come off as a tough guy. Ok time to be a
real "Dragon Knight!"]
"Ok! S*** foods here!" The guard said roughly.
[Nows my chance.]
"Thank you sir. please bring it in." Ranker said so manneraly that it
almost knocked the guard for a loop.
<Tag tree only if you want deilila to bring the food to ranker.>
<NRPG> sorry for the long await I lost my pc again lol. but in case you
can tell Ranker is going to try real hard to watch his manners,
hopfully no one gets him mad lol. So those oh you that write with
Ranker Please try to keep this in mind.

Subject: [DL-J] My Goddess of Land and Sea.
Day 1
Evening
Corwin threw himself again and again at the invisible barrier that Oga
had thrown up between him and his foes. He could hear Toru chanting
and
saw the Emperor's intense look of concentration. Their eyes locked and
as Corwin shoved, the wall suddenly gave. Corwin was running now,
though it felt as if he were running underwater. His legs pumped hard,
and his breath hurt in his chest, but he was moving so slowly! Corwin
forced his way through the barrier to the narrow hall where Tara had
been fighting with Oga. He couldn't believe his eyes as he witnessed
the queenrider go down and Oga about to reach for the scepter, when
from
the other end of the hall the apparition of a goddess with the scream
of
a banshee and thunder for her footsteps raced forward to deny the
sorcerer his prize.
It was with horror that Corwin realized it was Hsina. The battle was
fierce and swift, and before Corwin could defend his love, Oga had
thrown her to the ground and had the scepter in his grasp. Hsina was
upon him again, but Oga easily threw her back and raised the scepter to
cast his spell.
The scepter glowed briefly in Oga's hand, and he touched the end of it
to his jaw where Hsina had struck him. By its power, the damage she
had
done with her blow was reversed. He smiled grimly. "Too bad warrior
woman," he said, pointing its tip at her as he turned his full
concentration on her. "Your time has come..." Power gathered around
him, and again there was that feeling in the air as though a
thunderstorm were forming in the room. The scepter's glow brightened,
and glowing motes of light swirled around it as the power gathered.
"NO!" With the voice that could carry across a hurricane's wind, Corwin
yelled, as he came to Hsina's aid. His huge hammer-like hands smashed
into Oga's back, and the sorcerer's concentration was broken - the
spell
uncast, shattered around them like fireworks. Oga's sword went flying
as
he concentrated on retaining his grasp on the scepter.
"Hsina! See to Tara!" Corwin shouted, as he snatched up the fallen
sword and turned to face the sorcerer.
Oga laughed, "You mere humans! You have no chance against me! I will
rule the oceans and have the Kataani make slaves of you landers! You
might even make good pets when trained right!"
Hsina growled, low in her throat and crouched to rush him again. She
would never be anyone's slave! She tried to move, but found that Oga
had immobilized her. But his concentration could not be maintained,
for Corwin, finding himself able to move against Oga, did so when he
saw
that the counselor was focused on Hsina.
Corwin slashed at Oga, trying to slice at his arms. Anything to remove
the scepter from his grasp! But instead of the blade sinking into soft
flesh, it was thrown back, as if striking steel. The force sent Corwin
flying backward, landing with a crash against a table, splintering it.
He stared in disbelief at Oga's sword in his hand, as the weapon's
blade
blackened and fell away as ash.
Weaponless, he pulled himself up and grasped for anything -- and
finding
a table leg, he hefted it like a cudgel.
Oga sneered, "You are a fool, sailor, if you think that you are any
match for me!"
Corwin shook his head, "No, I am no wizard. But you will have to kill
me if you want to leave here with that scepter! And I promise you,
I'll
do my best to take you with me!" With that, Corwin yelled and charged
Oga again.
Whatever magic the scepter had in protection against weapons, it must
have only considered metals, as the blow from the wooden table leg
smashed into Oga, sending him sprawling backward in surprise. His head
hit the floor and he seemed momentarily stunned. But, unfortunately,
the scepter was still in his grasp.
Corwin pressed his attack, swinging the table's leg downward, but Oga
brought the scepter up to block, and scrambled to his feet, with
surprising agility. They were locked together in the struggle, forcing
each other back and forth down the narrow hallway. But Oga seemed
untiring, merely toying with the large man, a feral grin on his face.
Corwin realized that they were getting closer to the women behind him
and glanced back to see how Hsina was fairing with Tara. His momentary
loss of concentration was all it took, and Oga summoned the powers to
him, and leveled the scepter on Corwin.
The power drove Corwin down to his knees, and he could feel the crackle
in the air, his long hair rose off the back of his neck, billowing out
about his head.
"You wanted to die, sailor? Well, die you shall!" Oga jeered as the
power swelled to lethal intensity.
[TAG: Anyone? Corwin isn't going to die... right?]
---
Summary:
Day 1
Evening
Corwin struggles through the barrier as Emperor Toru opens a small
rift,
and then races to the aid of Hsina and Tara. He battles Oga until a
momentary loss of concentration allows Oga to summon his power and draw
upon the scepter, leaving Corwin at his mercy.
