Subject: [DL-J] A Chance Worth Taking

Day 1
Evening

Tyler shook his head. It was all turning out so very wrong! He was
still gasping for breath as he recovered from his brush with the
counselor. The battle with Oga had now moved down a hallway, and from
where he stood he could hear but couldn't see the fighting. The
cla****ng of weapons and the sharp re****t of what must be magic being
used indicated the severity of the fight that must be ensuing. He saw
the emperor, with beads of sweat and hands shaking muttering
incantations to try to take apart a ****eld that Oga had left in his
wake. Holes were momentarily opening and Tyler saw a few of the riders
manage to push or leap through before the ****mmering wall closed in
again.

[NRPG: Still room for others to jump in before the end!]

He looked down at the scroll that he held hidden in his hand. Why had
Tara so desperately wanted it switched? Perhaps the scroll Oga now
possessed wouldn't give him the power he had intended? Rellik might
know, Tyler thought and searched for the Kataani scholar.

Rellik stood bunched with the others, desperate to know what was
happening just out of sight. Tyler pulled on his sleeve to get his
attention and almost got flattened for the effort as Rellik swung on
him, only barely catching himself before his fist connected. Tyler
jumped back, colliding with several riders, sending them all tumbling
backward.

Rellik glared at Tyler, who hastily pulled himself up.

"Rellik, I need to ask you about that scroll!" Tyler pointed toward
the
hallway.

Rellik looked defeated and answered, "It is the 'Scroll of Power'. As
soon as Oga finishes reading that, the power of the scepter will be
linked to his will -- he will have the power to kill everyone in the
warren and be virtually undefeatable."

"Are you sure?" Tyler grinned, impishly.

Rellik looked at him, anger just boiling below the surface.

Tyler quickly went on, "You see, Tara gave me this other scroll. You
remember when Oga was fighting with you and I jumped in...." Tyler
held
out the scroll to Rellik.

Rellik snatched it from his grasp and unrolled it, scanning the words
hastily. "What scroll is this?! It can't be! That means...."

"I switched it," Tyler gloated.

"Then the one Oga has... It's the 'Scroll of Un-making'! He's the
emperor's cousin and if he reads it... it will destroy him and the
scepter!"

"That's a good thing, right?"

Rellik pondered, "We just don't know what else it might destroy...."

But Tyler wasn't listening. He saw that Toru had opened a hole and he
was taking his chance. Leaving the 'Scroll of Power' in Rellik's hands
he jumped through the hole and ran down the hallway to where the battle
was taking place.

It was worse than Tyler had imagined and he hesitated in what he was
about to do. He would have to pull the others away and let Oga "win".
But Oga would be suspicious if he just allowed him to win. What could
he do?

Tyler chuckled inside. He would do what he was best at doing; getting
in other people's way, while trying to help. He charged into the fray,
sla****ng indiscriminately and making the other riders duck out of the
way. Tyler slammed into Eliase, sending her tumbling. Raven jumped
away to avoid the young rider's sword, while cursing a blue-streak.
Then there was Hsina. She looked as immovable as a statue, and Corwin
would never forgive him for what he was about to do... but Tyler knew
she had been injured and he shot out a kick, going for the back of her
knees. She collapsed forward in surprise.

Now only Oga stood before him, laughing in his face. Tyler swung his
blade and took the full force of the magic as Oga leveled the scepter
against him. He spun around before cra****ng into a table which
collapsed beneath his weight and the force of the throw.

Oga stood, appearing invincible, as he read aloud the incantation
contained within the scroll he held. It took him a few moments before
he realized that something was not quite right with the wording. The
scepter was glowing and instead of a feeling of increasing
invulnerability, Oga was sensing an increasing sense of doom. What was
he doing wrong?

Tyler, lying among the shards of the table, was grinning.

"You!" Oga screamed. "What have you done?"

Tyler's smile broadened.

Oga stared at the scepter, as it gathered power into itself. The room
was growing colder as the scepter grew hotter in his hand. Oga cried
out, and dropped the scroll. Panicked he turned around, searching for
an escape from his doom.

The restraining magic wall fell apart and everyone came ru****ng down
the
hall. Rellik gasped as he realized what was happening. "The scepter!
It is going to implode!"

Oga threw the scepter at Tyler, "You die with it!"

Tyler stared at the scepter in his hand. It was only fitting, he
briefly thought.

"NO!" Rellik cried out, "It will kill us all! You have to get it out
of here, fast!"

Tyler tried, but shook his head in frustration. He couldn't move. The
throw onto the table had injured him too badly; he couldn't crawl, much
less run.

The scepter was snatched from his hands and he looked up into the eyes
of his cousin. "Gus?"

"No time. Take care of yerself, kid," and she raced for the end of the
hall, the scepter's glow making it hard to look at her as she ran.

[TAG: Andrew -- Oga is all yours!]

Summary
Day 1

Oga without making it look like he was intending to do so. Oga reads
the scroll and realizes the error, as Tyler looks on, smiling. Rellik
arrives as the magic wall Oga had erected collapses, and realizes the
scepter is going to implode. Oga throws the scepter at Tyler, who is
