Subject: DLJ: Endgame

Day 1, Evening

<Snip from Arlene's post>
Oga stared at the scepter, as it gathered power into itself. The room
was
growing colder as the scepter grew hotter in his hand. Oga cried out,
and
dropped the scroll. Panicked he turned around, searching for an escape
from
his doom.

The restraining magic wall fell apart and everyone came ru****ng down
the
hall. Rellik gasped as he realized what was happening. "The scepter!
It is going to implode!"

Oga threw the scepter at Tyler, "You die with it!"

Tyler stared at the scepter in his hand. It was only fitting, he
briefly
thought.

"NO!" Rellik cried out, "It will kill us all! You have to get it out
of
here, fast!"

Tyler tried, but shook his head in frustration. He couldn't move. The
throw
onto the table had injured him too badly; he couldn't crawl, much less
run.

The scepter was snatched from his hands and he looked up into the eyes
of
his cousin. "Gus?"

"No time. Take care of yerself, kid," and she raced for the end of the
hall, the scepter's glow making it hard to look at her as she ran.
<End Snip>

Oga was again standing, the wound in his chest healed by the scepter
even as
the powerful artifact began to implode. Tyler, Eliase, Ansel, Corwin,
Tara
and Hsina were all down as Oga extended his hand and summoned the sword
to
it, again confident that while he wouldn't have the scepter, he would
have
victory.

Menacingly, Oga walked over toward Tyler, choosing the one who denied
him
the scepter as the first whose life was to end. He brought his sword
up
with a wicked grin and then with a sarcastic wink, began the powerful
downstroke that would sever the young rider's head, only for it to be
interrupted by the clang of metal on meta.

"No" Hsina said with a newfound strength in her voice.

"Won't you just die already?" Oga said as he backed up slightly and
assumed
a fighting stance against the only other person standing in the room,
if
Hsina's hobble could be called standing. Her right leg and right arm
looked
strong, but her left arm now hung uselessly at her side, dark red blood
seeping out from between the plates of her arm and shoulder. Her left
leg,
while slightly mobile, did not sup****t any of her weight, and was also
slick
with dark red blood. Even the spear wound from the earlier battle
appeared
to have reopened, as her hip area on the right was also stained and
made it
obviously difficult for her to stand erect.

"You look pathetic, Hsina, perhaps killing you can be considered an act
of
mercy, for you certainly can never recovery. Isn't it nice to think
that
even should you walk out of here alive, never again will you be able to
stand in battle. What was it you said of your people, that you go to
your
afterlife as you were at your moment of death. You will spend eternity
broken and weak Hsina, crawling across your weeping fields without the
strength to reach your paradise valley, or whatever miserable reward
your
barbaric religion offers."

Hsina smiled, a trickle of her blood running down her cheek. "You will
die
slowly, Oga."

"You still don't know where Tanami is" he said as Hsina approached
slowly.

"You will tell me" she replied.

"And why would I do that?"

"Out of some mistaken hope that I might show mercy and let the pain
end."

"You are....." clang, their swords came together as Oga parried a
powerful
blow. Then something that was never supposed to happen, happened. A
lander
woman's arm was stronger than his own, despite his race, despite the
magic
of his spell and the power of his sword. The crossed blades came
closer and
closer to his chest as Oga pulled a dagger with his left and went for a
swing, but before he could deliver the smaller blade Hsina's left fist
caught him in the side of the head, sprawling him flat on the floor
with his
sword a good ten feet from his hand.

The pain in her left shoulder was blinding, but to Hsina it served more
as
fuel for her rage, which was what kept her standing. Slowly she walked
toward Oga, throwing her own broadsword to the ground as she reached
down
with her ruined left hand and grabbed him by the neck and jerked him
back to
the upright, his feet dangling a full 6 inches from the ground as he
struggled for air.

His left hand, still clutching the dagger, went in for the killing blow
to
her neck, but her uninjured right hand caught his left and
simultaneously
crushed and twisted, crackling the bones in his hand her twisting
snapped
the bones of his wrist. "Yes, savour it" Hsina hissed to him in his
own
language as she gently wriggled the shattered bones of his hand, the
reaction instant and unmistakable on his face.

Raven finally regained her footing and moved in, but stopped when Hsina
turned her head and faced her. "Get the others out, we need our
privacy."

"Hsina, you can't...."

"Do as I say, I am only telling you once."

Hsina ignored the other rider as she ran with Oga still suspended at
the
hard stone wall, slamming him powerfully into the hard surface, winding
him.
Spinning around she slammed him in the other direction, repeating the
process every time he appeared to be getting his wind back. Seeing the
maniacal rage in the seadragon queenrider, Raven decided it best to get
the
injured warrenlady and the others to safety, and noticed with each trip
into
the room to fetch another injured rider that Oga became bloodier and
bloodier while Hsina somehow stood more and more erect and moved with
more
and more strength, like some evil death goddess out of children's
horror
stories.

Finally, two hours later, Hsina limped weakly out of the room, alone.
"Tanami is in an underwater cave 3 km North of the warren. Keeza and
Riyanne have already found her."

"And Oga?" Tyler, Rellik and Toru all asked in unison.

"Oga will not be troubling us again."

"Hsina, you ..." Corwin started, only for her to interrupt "I know, I
could
sure use your help getting there though" Hsina said, smiling slightly
as the
big sailor took the weight of her injured side on his powerful
shoulder.

"You don't mind being helped off the battlefield?" he asked.

She smiled broadly "Not by you my love, not by you."

Day 3
Morning

The heat of the day was still hours away, but already Eth'n felt the
effects and wondered if he'd ever get used to it. The new rider from
Telnor was dripping in sweat as they approached him.

Eth'n stood back while Rowan and Kat introduced themselves and welcomed
Jacin to Cleft.

"Both of our queenriders are in the medical center," Rowan explained,
"Or one of them would be here to meet you."

Jacin looked surprised.

"Our junior queenrider was injured in a fall," Eth'n looked away in
shame as Kat continued, "Our warrenlady, however, has just given birth
to twins."

"Congratulations," Jacin remarked. "Then I guess I should give you my
transfer papers?"

When they had finished the introductions, Eth'n stepped forward,
extending his hand. He could see a glimmer of recognition in the man's
eyes.

"I'm Eth'n. I was the trainer at Cleft for a brief period of time."

"Weren't you involved with...?"

"Mae, the queenrider, yes...."

"Right. Sorry about that... and her. I heard she was still in
Tinobal?"

"I don't know... I've been here for the past half year."

Jacin nodded, looking around him. "Quite a change from Telnor."

"Yes, it is. A bit on the dry side," Eth'n chuckled. He glanced at
the
two wingleaders and smiled, "If you don't mind, I'd be happy to show
Jacin around."

Since Rowan and Kat didn't seem to mind, Eth'n took the new rider under
his wing.

"I'll take you on a brief tour. Are you hungry? We can start with the
dining hall if you are, or if you'd prefer, I can show you around some
and then we can go by there for lunch -- it's probably better to walk
around now, come to thing of it, as it's only going to get hotter."

"Hotter?" Jacin wiped his dripping brow.

[Tag: Josh -- feel free to write the tour if you'd like... anyone want
to meet up with the new character?]

---
Afternoon

After showing Jacin around Eth'n suggested that they get him settled
into an apartment. "You'll like our quarter master," Eth'n grinned.
"Not at all like the one in Telnor."

"Really?" Jacin chuckled. "So far, nothing in Cleft is like Telnor."
His mouth still hurt and his stomach was still churning after trying
some of the 'native' foods that Eth'n had suggested.

Eth'n grinned as he led his way across the warren to the
quartermaster's
office and storerooms. The mixed smells of the warehouse greeted them
as they entered the cavern. The office door was just to the right of
the counter and Eth'n looked around for Mary who usually lingered
around
the counter and would run interference for Alania. Mary, however, was
nowhere to be seen, so Eth'n strolled over to the closed door and
knocked.

Jacin wasn't sure what to expect after Eth'n's cryptic comments about
the quartermaster, but the pretty young woman who opened the door
wasn't
it.

"Eth'n!" Alania greeted the trainer warmly.

Eth'n smiled, "Hello, Alania."

Something passed between the two before they remembered that Jacin was
standing there.

"Oh, Jacin, this is Cleft's quartermaster. Alania, this is a new rider,
just transferred in from Telnor. He'll need help getting settled in."

Alania nodded and opened the door wide, "Well come on in! I've got a
few
apartments that you can choose between...."

Eth'n nodded farewell as the new rider followed the quartermaster into
her office.

Day 107 Morning

<Snip>

Rayn leaped off the bed as though a hot blade had struck her from
behind. Running screaming from the apartment she leaped from the ridge
hurtling down to the ground tempting fate to end it all but as the
ground rushed closer a undersized blue dragon caught her mid flip and
they both landed roughly on the green. Pandora who was exiting the
dining hall witnessed the fateful leap and the breath taking catch, ran
to where Eternity and Rayn lay. Rayn was shaking, sobbing, half
screaming Kati's name. Pandora ran and knelt down beside the delirious
woman catching her in her arms and holding her close.

<End Snip>

A scream for help tore from Pandora's throat at the sight of the
falling woman. The queenrider grabbed up her skirts and started running
towards her breathing a small sigh of relief at the blue blur that
appeared saving the dragonhealer.

<Snip>

"Rayn what is wrong." Pandora tried to calm the hysterical woman.

"Shes here, shes come back for me. Shes here, shes come back for me."
Were the only words that escaped Rayn's lips before the young woman lay
silent. Completely knocked out by the shock.

<End Snip>

<<Almantha, make sure Eternity is alright!>> Pandora commanded as she
hugged Rayn close. Rocking gently her eyes grew bright with tears. How
selfish she had been wallowing in her own guilt over that fateful day,
never thinking how it was truly affecting Rayn. "Oh Rayn, I'm so sorry!
Can you ever forgive me?" Her whispers fell on deaf ears as the tears
brimmed over to trickle down the dark-haired woman's cheeks.

A hand on her shoulder made the queenrider glance up to see people
hurrying from all directions. S'than squatted down in front of her, his
eyes filled with concern, "S'than, we've got to get Rayn to the
Med-Center!"

Silently nodding, he gently took the unconscious women from her arms
then hesitated as a hand out of nowhere lifted Pandora to her feet.
Eternity stood instantly ****ging the motionless form in S'than's arms.
"Don't worry little one, she'll be okay!" he said softly to the young
dragon.

"I'll take good care of her." Pandora added stroking the blue head
spikes. Looking over to her queen who had landed close by. <<Almantha,
bring Eternity through the dragon's entrance so she doesn't worry. Ask
Kimith to have Timbolo waiting, it was a hard landing and I want him to
check her over to make sure she's alright! We'll take her rider in the
other door!>>

The queen dipped her head as if nodding and the coppery snout gently
nuzzled the sky blue female as the humans hurried towards the
Med-center.

"What did she say?" the red-headed rider asked as he walked carefully
with his fragile burden.

Pandora let out a deep sigh then blurted out, "S'than, this is all my
fault! I didn't think, and she and I have never talked about it! We
should have! But we didn't, I just wanted it all to go away!"

"Pandora, what are you talking about?" He asked quietly.

"Katie, she said she saw Katie!" The queenrider choked out. "I was so
worried about my own guilt and trying to forget I never realized how
deep her grief really was!"

"You can't blame yourself! It wasn't your fault!" S'than stiffened,
answering with a hard edge to his voice.

"If only I hadn't....if only.." Pandora let the sentence fall as she
opened the door for her friend. She had 'what if-ed' herself to death
since that day going over the events in her mind trying to make some
sense of it all. A ****ver ran up and down the queenrider's spine and
her face drained of color..remembering.

"Pandora!" Adams voice cut through the horrible images forming in her
mind. Blinking in surprise she gazed at the healer in confusion. "Are
you okay?" he asked eyeing her carefully.

Taking a deep breath the queenrider nodded. "Yes, I'm fine. We have to
get Rayn into the dragon room! They landed hard and I need to make sure
that she isn't seriously injured but I'm sure Eternity is worried
sick!"

The door to the med-center swung open abruptly and Lexi filled the
doorway, a deep scowl filling the handsome face. Pandora swung around
and immediately put up her hand to ward him off. "I'll take care of her
big brother, I'll let you know!"

The blacksmith hesitated looking over the heads of the healers to watch
the redheaded rider disappear through an inner doorway. His jaw
clenched tightly as his eyes dropped to met Pandora's, "Sis, you let me
know the second she wakes up!"

Pandora gave her twin a sweet smile, "I sure will."

[..] In the hatching cavern

The orangish-red male glided gently to the entrance of the hatching
cave a huge buck hanging from his jaws. Folding in his massive wings he
lumbered into the cavern announcing himself to the golden queen.
Brooding mothers had a tendency of being quite protective of their eggs
and he wasn't about to get his head bit off for no reason.

He gently laid the fresh kill at the edge of the nest then stepped back
and eyed the beautiful eggs, his eggs! Even though Galendriel had laid
them, the big male felt they were as much his as hers. He was going to
be a father and even though he really wasn't sure what that entailed he
couldn't help but be proud. Unfortunately, his rider wasn't much help
in explaining fatherhood so the scaly mammoth guessed he would have to
play it by ear, but that was okay. He couldn't help but wonder if any
of them would look like him. Even though he knew that each one would be
distinct, he noted that many of the humans put great stock in having a
hatchling that looked like them.

He really wished they would hatch soon as Galendriel had grown
increasingly moody over the last week. When he brought her meals he
made sure he kept his distance these days, as it had been a hard lesson
learned when he'd foolishly gotten too close to the nest without the
queen's approval.
