Subject: [DL-N] A mother's fears and panic
Day 9, Early morning, hatching cavern
Malani was already awake when the humans started arriving in *her*
hatching cavern. Her babies were snuggled around her, sleeping the deep
sleep of contented newborn.
And those humans had the temerity to disturb them!
Only the courtesy of the first arrival saved her from being snapped at.
Freya arrived before dawn, on her way to work in the Medical Centre.
Making just enough noise so as not to startle the great queen if she
had been sleeping, she approached Malani, and bowed deeply.
"Golden Queen," she said. "Griese tells me she is hungry, and I've come
to give her some breakfast."
*My Rider! Mine!* piped up Griese, disentangling herself from the
sleep-heap of hatchlings.
Freya took a cautious step closer, and reached down to scratch the
delicate little gray dragon behind her horns. Griese purred with
delight, and rubbed the itchy spot against her bondmate's hand.
"May I?" Freya repeated to Malani.
*Mama! I'm hungry! I want food!* Griese added, plaintively.
Reluctantly, Malani agreed, but wrapped her tail more closely around
the rest of her clutch. She watched Freya closely as the woman fetched
a bucket of meat from the doorway of the cavern, sat down beside Griese
and fed the meat, chunk by chunk, to the gentle hatchling.
[A little later, when most of the other riders have arrived to feed
their dragons]
The earthquake struck without warning.
As the bucket overturned, Griese gave a wail of distress, both at the
shock of the tremor and the sight of what was happening to her
breakfast. Freya flung her arms around the little dragon's neck to
comfort and protect her, but Malani's concern was fiercer.
With a piercing shriek, Malani shot to her feet.
Griese, the nearest baby to her mother, was torn from Freya's grasp and
dragged unceremoniously to her mother's side as Malani's huge, clawed
paw shot out instinctively.
But the queen's greatest fear was for her precious little Lily. Where
was she? *Lily?* she called, as she scanned the cavern.
Chaos filled the cavern. Humans da****ng everywhere, baby dragons mewing
and squealing in distress. It was over a minute before the distraught
mother spied Lily across the cave.
That human the little queen had chosen was crouched over *her* baby,
extending Lily's wings and feeling her for signs of injury. Lily was
sniffing at Mallory, with obvious signs of concern.
Malani bounded towards them at a lurching run, but the pair were
engrossed in concern for one another. Only when the golden queen was
almost upon them did Mallory and Lily look up.

SUMMARY:
Day 9, very early morning: Freya arrives at the hatching cavern, and
persuades Malani to let her feed Griese.
When the earth tremor strikes, Malani is fearful for her babies,
especially Lily, the little queen. She races to Lily's side to protect
her, but Lily and Mallory are more concerned with checking each other
for injuries and comforting one another.
