Reain's Storm
Day 3
Mid Afternoon
>>My rider please wake up!!<< The light blue dragon had been calling and
calling
her rider and how resorted to yelling to get her to wake up before it
was to
late. >>PLEASE WAKE UP NOW!!! He knows and he is angry!! He is coming
here to
see you and I know there will be yelling!! Oh PLEASE WAKE UP!!<<
<I am awake my love,> Reain told her dragon. <Why do you yell at me so?
Is it
my daughters?> suddenly Reain was awake. Wide awake at the thought
something
had happened to one of her girls.
>>Benna's are alright. But Bohoc's rider knows the little hatchling is of
his
blood and is coming to see you about it.<< Sylois told her rider.
>>Bohoc said
his rider is very angry with you for not telling him... But I tell
Bohoc that
my rider did tell .. say his rider dumb for not listening to truth...
<<
<Wait...> Reain wasn't sure she had understood Sy's words right.
<Bohoc's rider
knows!! And is coming HERE!!>
>>Yes they are on their way now.<<
Reain moved quickly. All traces of sleep were gone now as she grabbed
her riding
leathers and dressed. <My love I need to get out of here. I can not
face Bohoc's
rider right now.>
>>I know my rider. That is why I woke you. I am ready to go when you get
here...
Oh you are here. Let us go.<<
Reain has stopped just long enough to tell the *sitter* that she had to
leave
for a while and ask that she stay and mind Kenziah.
"I am here for as long as Reain needs me to be," the woman told her.
"Go. Daughter
will be taken care of."
When the dragon had flown high enough, Reain pictured the high mesa in
her mind
and told Sylois to take them there. Seconds later they were there and
Sylois
was landing.
Reain came here to get away. Came to this mesa where at one time she
had come
to kill herself. She came here a lot over the last few months, but this
time
there were no thoughts of suicide in her heart. Those days were gone.
Now she
came to this place to renew her joy in the life that the gods had
spared. She
came here each morning to pray and give thank for her children and for
the fact
that her daughters would grow up to be free to make their own choices.
They
would not have to suffer the things she had suffered growing up as a
slave.
She came here to try and rebuild the part of her that Andahar's
betrayal had
destroyed. To find the parts of her heart that he had cut away with his
sharp
words.
She came up here to regain her self respect and honor.
To find her *Self*.
Once she prayed to have Andahar's seed grow within her body. Once she
Would have been proud to give birth to his son. Once she thought he had
loved
her. But Andahar did not know what love was. Love wasn't something you
earned
for being a *good little obedient nomad woman*. Love was something you
had to
feel inside of you, all around you, and love was there no matter what.
Love
did not have a price.
Andahar has taken Reain's love and used it to keep her inline. He gave
her only enough attention to keep her holding on. She could see that
now. Love had blinded her before. Even so, she hated that she could not
make her body stop craving his touch. No other man had ever given her
the pleasure
Andahar could give her. Had given her. But no more would she feel his
touch.
She had loved him with her body and soul. Would have given him anything
he had asked of her, and in return, he had belittled her, accused her
of all
kinds of slights to his honor, and nearly killed her with the
beating he gave her when he had thought she had tried to kill his sons.
Still she had stuck by and waited for him. Loved him.
And now... NOW he was angry with her because Reain DID tell truth and
baby Kenziah
WAS his daughter. The daughter he swore could not be his. The very same
daughter
she was carrying when he accused Reain of sleeping with another.
She had told the Truth. She had told him the baby she carried was from
his seed; that there had been no other man in her bed. Did he give her
words of regret... Would he say he wrong and ask Reain to forgive
him...? No...
He was Great Chief.. Great Chief did not have to say sorry. He would
say none
of those things. No he would find some way to blame Reain. Reain was
wrong no
matter what. After all, she was only woman. Low born woman.
She didn't have to turn around to know whose dragon had landed on the
mesa top next to Sylois. She had always been able to *feel* Andahar
when he
was close by. This time was no different. While she hadn't expect him
to follow
her here to this place, she knew he would force a
confrontation with her dealing with the fact of his finally realized
what everyone else had known from the moment they had learned Reain was
to have a baby.
That Andahar, and only Andahar could possibly be the father of the
child.
How he could think other wise was something Reain could never
understand. How many times did she have to prove her love for him? How
many times did she have to swallow her own pride submit to his every
demand just so he would love her in return. She knew now that he would
never love her. Not the way she has wanted his love. She would never be
good enough in his eyes to be a wife. He didn't want a wife... he just
wanted someone to give him pleasure when *he* wanted it...
"Go away! You are not welcome here," she didn't even turn around to
face him,
but she knew he was there, and knew he was very angry with her.
"You know baby is mine. Did it give you pleasure to know that you held
my benna and I did not? Have I not always taken care of Jaliase and
acted as a good fahteh? Why would you deny me my own blood?"
"You denied her! Before she drew breath you threw Reain and baby out!
Did you
care for her then? Did you care for me then? Now that you know truth,
do not
blame Reain. Look to yourself for blame. Reain say baby is Andahar's.
Andahar
Say no."
Andahar glared, "I thought she could be by ... another man."
"Andahar! There has never been another man! Reain loved only you. Did
not want
another. But you were too blind to see; too worried about your honor to
take
care of your family."
The nomad chief shook his head in disbelief. "NO, you were faithless
one! You chose to dishonor me! You spoke up when it was not your
place! You did not act like proper Chunor! You went with another man
when you were mine!"
"No.. No MORE!!" Reain's voice was sharp when she spoke, cutting off
Andahar's words. "You do NOT own Reain! I do not have to stand and
listen to Andahar, Great Chief. I am Reain!! I am Rider of Sylois. No
more am I nomad slave to you or to people of uncle!! No more do I have
to behave like proper Chunor... I behave now as Reain wants. Believe
only what Reain knows to be truth... Unlike lies of Andahar."
"You have been spending too much time with rider of Blanchie. She has
put wild ideas in your mind. Does not become you." the man angrily shot
back; slightly stunned that Reain would dare to speak to him in such a
way.
"Better to listen to wild idea then listen to lies Andahar tells Reain
about word of love!" she sneered.
"I never lied to you," he shot back.
The small nomad woman gave an angry snort. "Everything you say to Reain
was lie. Everything you say was to keep Reain in her place... You say
Reain
family, you say you protect Reain with own life.. But your word is lie.
No more
will I listen to your words of how Reain bring "dishonors" to poor
Andahar.
Your words mean *nothing* to me now. You speak words like "Love" and
"Family"
And how you make Reain Wife! Want have baby with Reain, but when Reain
tells
you baby of Andahar growing inside... what does Andahar do!! He say:
Reain lie!!
Betray Andahar. Say baby not his say Reain sleep with another. Even
dragon say:
Reain no lie. Baby inside Reain is baby of Andahar.. But still he say
Reain
lie. Andahar say words to Reain that make Reain want to end life..
Reain have
nothing to live for. Only Lenna remind Reain that she has daughter.
Lenna good
friend to Reain. Lenna no lie, she believe Reain when Andahar did not."
Reain paused long enough for Andahar to deny her words. When he didn't
right away she went on with the words that had been building inside of
her since the day he tore her world apart.
"Every word Andahar say to Reain felt like knife cutting into heart,"
she reached for her belt and pulled out the knife Lenna had given her
from the
leather holder and tried to hand it Andahar.
"Take..." She told him, and then grabbed for his hand and forced the
knife hilt into his palm. "Andahar already kill the part of Reain that
knew
love with his words... Now Andahar can kill what left with blade!!! No
more
Reain... No more dishonor for the Great Andahar.. Just what Andahar
want.. no?"
"NO!" Andahar threw the knife to the side. "You cannot dishonor me
anymore than you have! You have made me fool in front of entire warren!
You
have won, Reain. You showed me as honorless man who would deny own
benna! All
now see me as so!"
"Reain did not want to *Win*." The anger had drained to be replaced
with the
sadness inside her heart. "Reain only wanted to have Andahar love her.
Wanted
to have many children of Andahar. Reain did not dishonor Andahar.
Andahar dishonor
Reain by treating Reain as if she was worth less then nothing in front
of others
in Warren. Not like person who love another. If you are honorless fool
of man
to people of Warren, is your own fault... Reain did not lie to Andahar
about
daughter. Reain did not share mat with other man. Everyone knew Reain
in love
with only Andahar.. But Andahar did not want Reain's love. Did not want
Reain
as wife.. Andahar wanted Reain only if Reain behaved like good slave
with no
thoughts or feelings of own self."
She turned away from him and bent to pick up the knife from where it
landed
when he had thrown it away. She did not want to loose Lenna's gift. It
meant
a lot to her. As she stood up, she looked at the blade for a few
seconds then
put it back into the leather pouch Dan'yar had made for her before the
Dragonrider
and most of his family had moved back to Telnor Warren.
"Reain try to be what Andahar wanted, but Andahar wanted to much and
gave to
little. Only giving when we shared matt. Only then was Andahar giving
kind lover,
but never did he give Reain his heart. Just his body. Never his
respect," there
were tears in her eyes now as she thought of what could have been. But
it had
all been wasted because Andahar still lived in the past.
Andahar stared at Reain, seeing her perhaps for the first time. He had
lumped
her in with women like Saleh, who had used Andahar and tried to pass
off her
bastard sons as his children. He had viewed Reain's actions through
his pain
and anger, and now he found he was wrong. She had every right to deny
him the
daughter he had denied was his own. He bowed his head, "I should have
never
disowned you, even if baby had not been mine; I should have taken care
of you
and protected you. I thought father of baby would take you, like Feysal
took
Saleh. I was wrong. There was no other father, no other man to protect
you."
"To late now. Once words would have meant the world to Reain. I would
have loved
you and only you for all my life," she told him. "I would have stood
beside
you and bore your children with pride. But you did not want my love.
You only
wanted Reain to obey you and think only what you allowed Reain to
think, to
say. You came to shared Reain's mat because you wanted to be
pleasured... That
not love. Reain knows now, slow learner. But I learn. Next time Reain
chooses
who Reain shares mat with. Next time maybe Reain will seek man to
pleasure her
the way Andahar use Reain.. Does not matter if love is there for Reain
has no
more love to give. Andahar killed all love in Reain's heart. Except for
love
for daughters. Not even Andahar could kill that love."
She turned away from him and started towards Sylois, but before she
climbed
into the saddle on the blue dragons back, she turned back to him.
"I will not keep you from seeing daughters," she told him. "Even if my
heart
cries for me to hurt you as you have hurt me. I will allow you to see
daughter's
for daughters sake only. Jasi still young and needs Father. Andahar has
show
great love for Jasi. You may see beena Kenziah, but not if other woman
is around,
and you must have dragon speak to Sylois first. Andahar is no longer
welcome
in home of Reain."
She mounted Sylois then and took off before Andahar could see her break
down
completely. Another little part of her heart had just died.

Day 3
Afternoon
Eth'n was still smiling as he came out of Alania's office -- that was
until he turned around and looked at the disapproving look on Mary's
face.
"Oh, umm... you weren't here when I came...."
"Did you get what you came for?" Mary asked, stiffly.
Eth'n frowned, "I didn't come for... But now that I'm thinking about
it,
I wonder... do you have something that might keep a girl in bed
occupied?"
Mary's eyes widened and her cheeks reddened, "I have no idea what you
are talking about, and I really think you should go now!"
Eth'n blinked, "I meant for Caly, the injured queenrider. She's
bedridden and...?"
"Oh!" Mary's looked abashed, "I thought you meant... oh, never mind
what I thought. How about... a puzzle? The Nomads make these little
wooden boxes that you can take apart and have to put back together.
Might keep her busy?"
"Great! I'll take one!" Eth'n took the box from Mary and grinned
impishly, "But if you have other ideas about what to do in bed...."
Mary swatted at him, blu****ng furiously.
Eth'n hurried out and shaded his eyes against the hot afternoon sun.
Warton arrived and Eth'n had to cover his mouth and nose as the large
maroon dragon landed, kicking up dust. He really needed to learn how
to
land without so much dust!
In a moment, Warton was winging his way to the junior queenrider's
apartment. They landed just outside and Eth'n slid down. Warton asked
Ale'bela if Caly was awake and if she'd like a visitor.
The "Yes" could be heard clearly out on the ledge, and Eth'n grinned as
he went inside.
"Hello! Caly!" Eth'n called as he entered the cooler and darkened
apartment. His eyes adjusted from the brightness outside before he
picked his way across her scattered belongings and into her bedroom.
The
poor girl hadn't even been able to finish arranging her things before
the accident. Perhaps he could help her out after he visited.
Inside the apartment it looks like a tornado had hit. Things were
strewn all over. Clothes, pictures and even furniture was overturned.
In the back of the bedroom Calylin sat with her back to the door on the
floor surrounded by clothes. She didn't turn or even get up as Eth'n
came in. "Hi Eth'n," she offered sounding dejected.
Eth'n stepped over some of the objects as he made his way to where Caly
sat. "What happened here?" He reached down to pick up some of the
items. "Looks like your bags exploded or... something."
"I was trying to move in," she replied sounding frustrated. She didn't
move from her spot on the floor but she did glance at him. "Just leave
it. I can't do anything on my own so I might as well live with the
mess. I'm not about to make you clean my apartment."
Guilt flooded Eth'n as he saw the dejected look on Caly's face, "Well,
I'm certainly not a maid, but... hey! I'm pretty handy with a hammer!
Let me hang some pictures!" And while looking for the hammer, which
Caly stated was under an upturned trunk, Eth'n quickly folded the
clothes that were "in the way" and put them onto a shelf in her
bedroom.
He found the hammer and made a big production of hanging some pictures
-- which of course required that he clear enough space away for the
picture to show properly... and so he put away more items. And before
Caly even knew it, her apartment did look a lot better. "See what
hanging a few pictures will do for a place? Brightens it up, doesn't
it?" Eth'n grinned.
Caly glanced around the room and then looked to Eth'n. "You are such a
brat." She did crack a smile though and moved to sit on a now cleared
sofa. "I guess I am getting good at feeling sorry for myself."
"I'm sure there must be other things you'd be better at?" Eth'n
teased.
"How about... this?" He produced the puzzle.
She looks at the puzzle and to Eth'n and then back again. "Umm a
puzzle."
"Well... Mary thought you might like it." Eth'n looked at it and then
at her arm and laughed, "Oh... guess it probably isn't that great a
choice in gifts. Well, gives you something to look forward to when you
get better!"
Caly smiled and hugged Eth'n with her good arm. "Have I mentioned how
happy I am that you are in Cleft?" She leaned back then and tucked her
feet under her. "So I heard we have some new riders here?"
"Yes, a rider just arrived from Telnor. He seems a bit young, but I
suppose that's why he wanted to come to Cleft. A lot of young men
think
it'll be exciting to be so close to the wilds."
She nodded. "Isn't that where you came from?"
Eth'n nodded, "Yes, but... I came because they needed a trainer..."
And
to forget about Mae, he thought.
"Well I am sure we can find a place for him. Do you know him?"
"No, he looked familiar, but I didn't know him," Eth'n remarked. "He
seemed nice enough while I was showing him around the warren. He asked
a LOT of questions... wanted to know where we got our hot water, cold
water, and just about everything. I'm afraid he must have found me
rather boring, as I really didn't have any of those answers for him."
She smirked. "You...boring? Never," she teased him.
"Heh. Mr. Excitement, that's me... of course I guess being chased by a
giant s**** and ending up in a hole was a little exciting. Hmm...
wonder how I can top that one?" He laughed.
"I dunno that I want you to." She wrinkled her nose and then laughed.
"Right, next time might be stuck in the desert during a sand storm, or
something. I've heard about those things... it's like the hand of the
gods comes ru****ng across the sands and obliterates anything in its
path
-- wiping the slate clean! I wouldn't mind seeing one... from a
distance!"
Caly nodded and then stood. "Maybe we could go exploring. Surely I
could
go for a short flight with you. Safer than flying alone...." She
looked
to him hopefully.
"I don't see what the harm would be in that?" Eth'n agreed. "Wear
something light and breezy. The afternoon sun can be murderous."
Eth'n immediately signaled to Warton about their intents.
<A bit eager, aren't we??> Warton sent back. <Don't you remember the
last time you took this girl somewhere? Are you sure you are being
wise? What if something else happens?
<*Oh, what could happen! We're just going to do a bit of sight-seeing.
I swear, we won't even get off and you can sit there while we OO an AH
over the scenery.*>
Caly was just relieved to be getting out of her apartment. Eth'n
helped
her onto Warton, who crouched down as low as he could to assist the
effort, and soon they were airborne.
They swept out of the cleft and along the river toward the plains. The
hot sun was mitigated by the wind as they flew.
"What's that!" Caly yelled out and pointed in the distance.
Eth'n shaded his eyes and looked where Caly pointed and could see what
appeared to be smoke on the horizon. "A fire?"
<*Warton! Let's take a closer look!*>
<You promised that you'd only do sight-seeing, remember?> Warton
reminded Eth'n.
<*We're only going to take a look,*> Eth'n cajoled.
Warton knew that his rider wouldn't be happy unless they did take a
look, so he banked and headed toward the smoke. As they approached
they
could tell that the cloud wasn't black, but the color of the dust of
the
plains.
"Maybe it's a stampede?" Eth'n commented as they were getting closer
and could see that there were shapes moving beneath the cloud of dust.
Caly shook her head, "No, those look like horses -- with people on
them."
Eth'n peered down and had to agree, "And others walking!"
"Nomads?" Caly asked.
"Obviously."
"What are they doing out here? Where do you think they're going?" Caly
asked.
Eth'n looked ahead and behind him and frowned, "They look like they're
heading toward Cleft!"
"Then we should warn the warren!" Caly exclaimed.
<*Warton, take us back to Cleft!*>
<Sure. What else do I have to do.> Warton shot back and immediately
winked out to reappear above Cleft's upper green.
As the large maroon dragon circled, a smaller green one also arrived
above the green and landed below them.
"Andahar!" Eth'n grinned. "He'll know what to do with those Nomads."
Andahar saw the maroon dragon circle and land. He didn't really want
to
deal with Eth'n right at the moment, his mind still reeling from what
he
had just discovered about Reain and Kenziah. But when he saw who was
with Eth'n his anger found an outlet. He rounded on the trainer.
"Why have you taken junior queenrider!?" Andahar exclaimed.
"Uh, she was bored..." Eth'n dismissed, "But have you been out to the
plains to the west?"
"You took injured queenrider to plains?" Andahar repeated.
"Yes, we were just flying and saw..."
"You take her home! Now! She should not be out. She should be
healing!"
"She! Is standing right here, and I asked Eth'n to take me for a ride."
Caly glared.
Andahar stared at the young woman who stood there, pale-faced and her
one arm in the sling, "You should be resting to heal from injury. You
are queenrider!"
"I think I can tell when I need to rest," Caly quipped.
Andahar muttered something in the Nomad tongue and turned to walk away.
"Wait..." Eth'n called, "But we have to tell you what we saw."
Andahar turned around and glared, "So? What did you see?"
"Nomads, out on the plains."
"Nomad live on plain..." Andahar snorted.
"No, there are hundreds of them! And they're coming this way."
The Nomad Chief frowned, "Hundred? No, they do not travel in such
large
number. Are they following herd?"
"No. Not that I could see," Eth'n replied.
Andahar studied Eth'n's face a long moment and then turned toward his
dragon. He vaulted up onto his dragon and a second later the green
dragon was launching into the air.
Warton gave Bohoc the image and the green dragon winked out of sight.
"He's rather rude, isn't he?" Caly remarked.
Eth'n shrugged, "He's a Nomad... and he really has reason not to like
me."
"Oh?" Caly smirked, "Why is that?"
"Warton won the mating flight of his girl friend's dragon."
Caly giggled, "Oh. Well, it was a mating flight."
"Yeah..." Eth'n grinned as he recalled the following day, "and
breakfast..." He winked at Caly.
Caly laughed, "OH! I see."
Eth'n laughed, "But she's made it clear she prefers that Nomad..."
"Good for me, I guess?" Caly winked in return.
Eth'n grinned at Caly and was about to suggest that they return to her
apartment when Rowan, one of the wingleaders, approached them. Her
small
sandstone colored female dragon settled down near the large maroon
male.
"Bohoc told Vashah that you were out here." Rowan stated, glaring at
Eth'n. She then turned to Caly, "Are you all right?"
"Yes, fine." Caly moved to stand in front of Eth'n. "I asked him to
take
me. If you are going to get mad at someone get mad at me." She offered
Rowan a glare of her own.
Rowan's turquoise eyes flashed, "I can see why a queendragon would
choose you."
