Subject: [DL-C] Women Talk (JP)

Late afternoon

>>The water is cool on my scales,<< Sylois told her rider as she swam out
into
the deeper part of the dragon's bathing pool. >>It was a good idea to
come out
here today and see, our hatchling already likes the water.<<

Reain smiled as she floated around the shallow waters with her baby
daughter
laying across her chest. <Yes my love,> she agreed. <The cool water was
just
what I needed to relax after what happened with Bohoc's rider. Did you
remember
to tell Blanchie where we were in case her rider asked?>

>>I did. She knows. Now I'm going to swim.<<

Kenziah started to fuss about then and so Reain decided to take her out
of the
water and back to the blanket she has spread on the ground.

A sound caught her attention, and Reain turned quickly to see who was
there,
almost fearing Andahar had followed her to this place.

She was shocked to see who it was coming towards her and then felt a
shaft of
anger flash through her before she could control it. How dare she come
to this
spot. She had no business here. Not her. She was almost the last person
Reain
wanted to see right now. Did she come to gloat?

"Andahar not here. Do not know where he is."

Alania smiled at Reain, knowing she was not the favorite person of the
woman's
she'd decided to was time to stop avoiding her and try to extend
friend****p.
She stopped a bit away from the blanket.

"I wasn't looking for Andahar. Actually I was hoping to run into you. I
wanted
to let you know that there were some new baby clothes in the storehouse
if you
wanted to come look for something new for Kenziah."

"Why you tell me this?" Reain asked, wondering what the woman was up
to. Did
Andahar send her here to spy on her? To make sure she was being good
mateh?
Did he not think she dress daughter good enough to be daughter of
Andahar?

Alania blushed slightly and looked down at her feet. "I was just hoping
that
perhaps...." She sighed and then looked up again. "Listen I know that
you don't
like me because I am with Andahar now, and you are not. But I just
wanted to
show you that I am not a bad person."

"Nice people do not last around Andahar," the nomad woman could not
keep the
bitterness out of her voice. "Take care you do not show him you have
brain in
head or you may not last long with the Big War Chief.. Andahar does not
like
women who speak mind. He say it bring big *dishonor* to his home."

"I know that he was that way. But he has changed a lot. Maybe you
should try
and talk to him again. You might see that he is not so much that way
anymore."
She looked hopefully to Reain.

"I talk to Andahar today. He followed Reain to Reain's special place
when find
out I no lie about Andahar being fateh to baby Kenziah," Reain told
her, this
time she didn't even try to hide the anger in her tone. But once she
got started
she could not seem to stop.

"Andahar yelled. Said Reain happy people think he honorless fool for
not believing
him about Reain's baby. Say all my fault people see him that way. I
tell him
if he seen as fool then is his own fault because Reain did not lie.
Reain told
truth about baby's fateh. He say Reain sleep with another. Reain say
no... Only
want Andahar. But Andahar say Reain not worthy to be wife or slave of
Great
big Nomad Chief. Reain can not be forgiven because she bring to much
dishonor
to house of Andahar. No Andahar no change. Still treat Reain like Reain
lower
then slave. Lower then dirt on bottom of foot."

Alania's eyes widened at this. Her gaze fell to the baby near Reain
and then
back to the woman. "I did not know..." She frowned deeper as the story
began
to fill her mind. "So first he was mad because he thought you slept
with another
man and that Kenziah was not his. Now that he knows that Kenziah is
truly his
and you never really dishonored him he is still mad at you?"

Reain nodded. "Reain can not please Andahar no matter what Reain does.
Now know
Andahar never love Reain.. only want to share... " she stopped thinking
that
to was personal to speak of. "Andahar never kind to Reain in company of
others.
Only kind on sleeping mat. Never let Reain forget Uncle made Reain a
Gift to
Andahar for bring dishonor to home of Andahar. I say Reain Free. Reain
Dragonrider
no longer slave. Andahar say Reain honorless woman, unworthy to be wife
of Great
Chief. Reain happy when find out she carry Andahar's seed inside body.
Andahar...
very angry with Reain.. punish her for lie he say she tells, then
leaves Reain.
Says words to make her dead to him and tribe. Alania lucky she not
nomad woman.
Nomad Chief no good to Nomad woman unless she behave like good slave."

"But now he knows it was not a lie. Doesn't that make a difference?"

Reain shook her head eyes burning with the anger building once again
inside
her. "Made no difference. Reain still dishonorable woman in eyes of
Andahar.
I tell him he is one with no honor. Reain try hard to be what Andahar
wanted.
Nothing Reain did good enough. Reain know that now. Andahar wanted good
little
slave, cook food, clean clothes, share mat with, but to keep mouth shut
and
not speak until spoke too. Like Lenna say.. *Have cake and eat too*
Andahar
no love Reain, but Reain give heart and body to man she love. Reain
dumb in
love. Know better now. Tell him Reain *IS* worthy to be wife.. Andahar
NOT worthy
to be husband. Tell him he not welcome in home of Reain. He kill love
in heart
of Reain."

Alania's head began to spin as she listened to Reain. As she thought
back on
her relation****p with Andahar she realized that he was a lot the same
way with
her, accept because she was not Nomad she fought back against it. But
Reain
had given him children and still he did not take her as his own.
Andahar's
argument to her about how she was the most im****tant to him despite his
wanting
to sleep with other woman rang loud in her mind. She began to see
herself very
much in Reain's position. What if she became pregnant? Would Andahar
marry
her then? Why should she be any different than the beautiful woman
before her?
Alania felt her heart sink into her stomach.

Reain tilted her head slightly as she saw Alania's face go pale. "You
see now.
Andahar not worthy of love." She almost felt happy that Alania was
starting
to see the Andahar she knew.

"I need to go," Alania whispered. "I..I am sorry I bothered you."

Reain watched the woman leave and suddenly she wondered if she had done
the
right thing in warning her about Andahar. Yes she was angry with him,
for hurting
her the way he had.. but was she right to say the things she had. Was
she really
trying to help the woman or hurt Andahar by making woman not like him?
That
wasn't what she was trying to do, the words just seem to pour out of
her mouth.

She knew he would be very upset with her. Once that would have alarmed
her.
But no more. She was free now, No longer Andahar's chunor. There was
little
he could do but say more hateful words to her... He couldn't beat her.
Sylois
and Lenna would never allow it. Still... Reain knew the man to well to
believe
he would let it go unanswered.

Well what was done was done. She could not take back her words.
Now she had other things to think about. Like going home and starting
the rest
of her life. Yes.. Today she was finally free of the past. Today she
would begin
a new life.

"Come my love," she was feeling wonderful as she picked up her daughter
and
gathered the rest of her things together. "It's time to go home."

No matter how happy she was feeling, there was still a nagging thought
in the
back of her mind that would not go away... What would Andahar do when
he learned
of her talk with his new woman.

[DL-W] Maturity

Day 16
late evening
Ash's apartment

A long hot soak, that was what he needed.

One of the advantages of the ground floor cave-
apartment Ash had moved into, other than the
abundant space, was a rather large tub. For years
he had tinkered with the plumbing, the lighting,
the temperature... it had been easy enough to
reverse the damage time had done. The place
was well-lit (if one ignored the many plants that
were already taking claim to the walls and
ceiling), was warm, and the bath he had drawn
was as hot as he could stand.

He had declined to rejoin the party. Not only was it
painful to endure the stares and the whispered
comments of so many of the other riders, but he
had to unwind after the scene in Trinale's garden.

Trinale. It was still hard to believe that she was
dead. In his mind's eye, he still saw her as a little
girl. He had seen her only once as an adult, in a
visit from Telnor. And now she was gone.

He was old, old before his time. So much had
happened... it was like watching someone else's
life unfold, several people's lives, really. It was so
hard to look ahead when so much was already
behind him.

There was regret, too, sadness for the men he had
killed just tonight; small comfort that they had
attacked him. There were other ways to put them
out of commission. They did not -have- to die. But
they made a point. If Reginald thought twice before
coming back, if Ash had something to do with that,
then it was worth the price.

Or was it?

Of all the deaths he had caused, these were more
on the 'justified' side of things, Ash thought. They
chose to attack. They were evil men, in the employ of
the Earl of Ravencroft.

It was their ill luck that they ran into someone worse.

Ash laid his head back, tried to relax, tried to open
his mind... think of nothing....

**You just like to kill things.**

*Shut up, Sol.* It was bad enough arguing with Wyndamenth,
without arguing with the memory of a dead dragon...

**But it's true.**

**No it isn't!** Wyndamenth's voice chimed in. She was
at his cave tonight, not thirty feet away; they were
trying it out, considering how well she was recovering.
**He makes mistakes!**

**Huge mistakes. Terrible mistakes,** came a voice.

*Shut up, Sol.*

The next mind-voice stopped him cold, brought chill
bumps all over his body even in the hot water.

**I'm not Sol. Who is Sol?**

**Solaris,** came Wyndamenth's thought. **The dragon
who died so long ago.**

**My rider says his rider killed him,** came the other.
**He's a bad man. He's only here because of you.**

Ash'chenon was out of the water now, throwing on
clothes, and put his back against a wall. It did not
help in the slightest.

*Who are you?*

**Zenia.**

Tatiana's dragon?

How?

**You heard that!** Wyn had come to the same conclusion.

*No. How? It's impossible.* Was it? Ash whipped around,
stared at Avid.

The great cat was staring back, but did not seem
frightened at all. ~Feed me.~

*No.* How? It was impossible.

The stone! The one he had picked up when he had
rescued Avid. So long, so long ago... it had awakened
something, an empathy. There was no denying that
it had grown stronger, had matured. He had needed the
crystal at first, then didn't need it any more to read
emotions. Then he could feel the bond with Wyndamenth,
could hear her thoughts-

**Does that mean we're not bonded?** Wyn's emotions
were overpowering, awful.

*No. No! Get out of my head!!* Ash knocked over a plant
with a sudden movement; the pot shattered.

**Ash?**

*Who else can hear me?* He concentrated, caught snippets
of thoughts, of conversations, dragons conversing and
gossiping all around him. Several were starting to
become aware of him. Some, like Azhgre, were happy at this
turn of events. Some were not. Wyndamenth was ecstatic.

**You can hear us! All of us! My rider!**

Ash's eyes closed, and his legs buckled; he slid down the
rough wall and landed ****d and in a heap on the floor.

**Ash!!**

Summary: After years of use and change, Ash's empathy
finally matures to a rough telepathy. The news is
disconcerting to Wyndamenth, who realizes that she may
not be bonded to Ash after all. Unable to handle the
sudden onslaught of new thoughts, Ash collapses in
his room.

Subject: [DL-C] The Fight

Day 4 Evening Alania's Apartment

Alania sat on the edge of her bed for a long time just thinking over
what Reain had told her. She had a hard time seeing Andahar being so
cruel to a woman, especially a woman who was the mother of his
children. But as she thought more about her relation****p with him and
the struggles they had gone through she realized that had she not
fought him on many of them she very well could have ended up like
Reain.

This naturally led her to wonder if Andahar truly loved her. Only
recently had he been willing to commit to not sleeping with anyone
else, and that was only because Alania had threatened to end the
relation****p if he did not. But what if she had been like Reain? What
if she had not been willing to stand up to him? More than that, what if
she got pregnant with Andahar's child? Would he marry her then?

Alania moved to change into her night****rt. She had to do something to
make sure that Andahar was really a changed man. She couldn't continue
the relation****p knowing that he could do to her what he'd done to
Reain. She heard the whoosh of a landing dragon and felt MoonDancer's
familiar joy at seeing Bohoc. Alania steeled her nerve. She moved to
the sofa in the living area and waited for Andahar, a plan in her mind.

Andahar was exhausted from his long day. All he wanted was a shower
and to rest in Alania's arms. He wasn't even hungry, he was so tired.
He had battled a Nadusi, found out about Reain's daughter, and now had
to deal with some refugees heading toward Cleft who were fleeing that
same Nadusi and looking to the warren for protection.

He sighed and smiled when he saw Alania waiting for him, but his smile
slowly faded as he looked into her eyes and saw an unexpected coldness.

Alania saw the exhaustion in Andahar's face and for a moment her
resolve almost crumbled. But she took a breath and pulled the front of
her ****rt over her knees. "I talked to Reain today," she stated simply.

Andahar stopped and felt as if he had grown suddenly cold, "Why would
you talk to Reain? Did she come to you or you to her?"

Alania frowned. "I went to her. I wanted to offer her some new baby
clothes that just came into the warren. But perhaps I should have asked
your permission first." It was a biting comment that was not like
Alania, but she was not happy with the man at that moment.

Andahar inhaled sharply, "Perhaps you should have... at least talked to
me first."

"And what would you have told me Andahar? Would you have continued to
argue that the baby was not yours?" Alania stood, the volume of her
voice going up. "Would you have told me that you cared so little for a
woman who loved you so much that you took other women to your mat
without thought of how that might make her feel, but at the first
inclination that she might have found comfort with another man you
threw her and *your child* away?" Her fists clenched. "And what of me?
If I become pregnant? Will you take me as your wife and love no other?
Or will you throw me away as you did her?"

"You cannot understand," Andahar responded. "What happened with Reain
and me has nothing to do with you. And I was wrong with Reain. I
should have known what happened with Saleh and me had nothing to do
with Reain, but I did not."

"So how will you make it up to her? How will you restore her honor
among the warren?"

Andahar laughed harshly, "Her honor? She is dragonrider. She tells me
she has no need with Nomad honor! She cares nothing for it. She has
stripped me of mine. She has made me fool. Reain has her honor. She
is woman who has two bahtna." Angrily he spat, "Jasa benna!"

"If she feels that way it is because of how you have treated her.
Because you care for your own pride and honor more than anything else,
or anyone else. You made yourself the fool, not Reain. I know what it
is to love you with everything that I am. I do not fault Reain for the
way she feels about you. I would not fault her if she never let you
see those children again. You do not deserve such joy, or love." She
sat angrily with tears in her eyes.

Andahar felt like he had been kicked in the stomach. What had he done
to anger the gods to warrant this? Why could he never keep anyone he
loved? His fahteh, his madeh, his whole tribe... the sons that Saleh
had said were his, Saleh... Reain and Jasi... Alania. Would Bahb be
taken from him as well?

He closed his eyes and sucked in his breath. It hurt. "Alania...?
Murad...."

Alania shook her head. It was a fight to keep her wall up, but she
would not let him hurt her. Not the way he hurt Reain. "No Andahar. I
do not want to be your murad. Not if you are that man. Not if you
throw away someone as easily as that." She struggled in vain to keep
the tears in. "I need to know you are different. I need to know that
your love for me means more than your pride and honor. Because if it
is not then I do not want to be with you."

A man without honor? What did she mean? "I would have died if it had
not been for my honor. When I had nothing. When I was slave. That is
all I had to hold onto. Now you ask me to put it aside for... love?
Where are all that I have loved? Dead. Gone. Left me for another.
What have I left from that love? Nothing! No, Alania. You ask too
much of me!" He turned away to hide the tears that threatened to
overwhelm him. "You were murad. I have never called anyone such! I
loved you...." He ran for the ledge, to his dragon. <*Bohoc! Fly!*>

Alania follow him out to the ledge. "Was not Reain your murad? Did you
not love her?"

"No." The emotions choked him. "She was not. I ... took her... as
Chunor... because... her uncle was cruel. If it was not me, he would
have sold her... without Jaliase! He would have kept Jasi to grow up
to be ... his slave. I took her to protect her. To protect Jasi."

Alania blinked. "But..Reain said.." His words overwhelmed her. Reain
said nothing about her uncle. She had said Andahar had loved her.
Suddenly her world started to spin. She put her hand out for something
to sup****t her but there was nothing there. She sank to the ledge,
pressing her cheek to the rock. Her tears flowed freely.

Reain... Alania believed Reain. Andahar could hear Alania weeping and
he couldn't turn around. He mounted Bohoc swiftly, <Bohoc... please...
go.>

The green dragon nuzzled the blue female before he leapt from the
ledge into the open air. His rider's heart ached. He had felt that
pain before. He would take him to the lake where he could find some
peace.

On the ledge Alania sobbed until sleep over took her. MoonDancer
curled up around her rider to keep her warm, more worried than ever
about the human she loved.

Early Morning Day 4

Alania groaned and covered her eyes with her hand. She ached all over
form having slept on the hard ledge. Her face felt tight from her
tears having dried on her cheeks. The memorys of the previous night
events flooded her mind and it was all she could do not to start crying
again. But she didn't.

Instead she stood and went into her apartment. There she cleaned
herself up and changed into her riding leathers. MoonDancer watched
her curiously from the ledge.

{Are we going somewhere?}

Alania nodded as she packed some food. {I need to get away from here
for a little bit.  Be away from everyone.}

{Perhaps if you try and talk with Bohoc's .} MoonDancer began. But
Alania cut her off quickly.

{No.  I am sure that Andahar wants nothing to do with me right now.}

MoonDancer didn't argue with her rider right then. Perhaps some time
away was a good idea. Then they would come back and if Alania and
Andahar wouldn't talk their dragons would do something about it. Alania
walked out to the ledge and strapped her bag to MoonDancer. Within
minutes the pair lifted off. Alania let the morning patrol know that
she was going to be gone from the warren for the day. Then she and
MoonDancer flew into the desert.

* * * * * * * *

Summary: Andahar goes to Alania's apartment for the night and finds her
waiting. They argue and he leaves. The next morning Alania leaves the
warren for the day.
