Subject: [DL-W] So Long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehn, Goodbye!
Day 17
Late Afternoon
The office was finally empty. Merissa sat back in her chair and
sighed,
wondering what she was going to do about the bears, dead, wounded and
orphaned. What was she going to do?
As she pondered this, her door opened again, and the one person she
hadn't seen all day popped her head around the corner. Where had she
been all day! Eleanora was always good at keeping those seeking
Merissa's attention busy, or at least she was usually able to deflect
them, more times than not, so the warrenlady could attend to the
matters
of running the warren.
"Do you have a moment?" Eleanora signed as she spoke the words aloud.
"For you? Always!" Merissa beamed.
Eleanora came in and closed the door behind her. She paused for a long
moment before turning to face Merissa.
The look on her face immediately put Merissa on the alert. She sat up
and waited for Eleanora to meet her eyes before she asked, "What's
wrong?"
Eleanora looked momentarily surprised, and then grinned sheepishly,
"I'm
that easy to read?"
"To me, yes," Merissa nodded, "So, tell me. What's up? Where have
you
been all morning?"
"Packing," was Eleanora's one word answer.
The word felt like a knife being stabbed into Merissa's heart.
"Packing? As in... you're going somewhere?"
"Yes."
"For a visit?" Merissa asked, hopefully.
"No, permanently." Eleanora pushed a bit of parchment across the desk
toward Merissa.
Merissa did not pick it up.
"Where? Why?"
"Keldarra... Merissa, as much as I love ... Whiteriver... I think I
love
Mahti more, and if I move to Keldarra, he can be with me more and... I
can be nearer to my family, and all."
"But I thought you didn't want to be near your family?" Merissa asked,
surprised.
"Yes, but that was... before... Before I was sure of myself as a
dragonrider and not just some poor, deaf girl. Now... now I can face
them, and face my inner demons."
"Are you sure? Absolutely sure?" Merissa asked her friend, looking
deeply into her eyes to ascertain the truth of her words.
"Yes, I've never been more sure of anything in my life." Eleanora's
eyes
did not waiver.
Merissa felt tears sting her own eyes. She pulled the parchment toward
her and saw it was a transfer letter. She signed her name. Standing
she walked around to where Eleanora stood. Wordlessly, she handed the
parchment to her courier, and with tears in her eyes, she embraced her.
Finally finding her voice, she pulled away so Eleanora could see her
lips, "I will miss you. Don't forget me!"
"Never!" Eleanora smiled through her own tears. She clutched the
parchment to her as if it were a treasure, "Thank you!" Turning
quickly, she left Merissa's office.
---
The royal party was assembled on the green, Eleanora among them.
Merissa was sending them all home on dragonback, though Prince Reolden
of course had his own, Trindal, to ride.
Reolden approached the warrenlady and before she could curtsy, he took
her hand and bowed, bringing it to his lips.
Merissa blushed, "Your highness...."
Reolden smiled and said for her ears only, "Please, we are way beyond
that, Merissa. I wish our situations could be different, but alas, I
must return to my father's castle and you must remain here. I will
think of you often."
Merissa's dark eyes looked into his warm brown ones, and she smiled and
whispered softly, "And I you."
In more formal tones that carried to all those assembled, "And I would
like to thank you for all you have done to make the ball for my cousin
a
wonderful success. The entertainment was superb; you must thank your
mother for us." He winked.
"I will, your... Reolden," Merissa nodded, her eyes once again feeling
the moisture of tears beginning to form.
"And Merissa, please watch over my cousin, Ari..." Reolden said as he
looked for the girl. He spotted her easily, standing next to the
wingleader, waiting their turn to say their farewells. "And take care
of
yourself."
Reolden then made his way to where Ari stood next to J'red.
He shook J'red's hand before turning to his cousin.

The next to say her farewell was the Dragon Lady, Christalla. The tiny
woman smiled warmly at Merissa and they embraced. "I am impressed.
You
really pulled this one off."
Merissa laughed, "Well, let's say I had a little help from some
friends.
To be honest, I was extremely worried. I am so glad you came to lend
your support."
Christalla shook her head, "No, dear. While I'm glad that I came --
just to see that look on the old toad Reginald's face... You didn't
really need me. I can see Whiteriver is in very capable hands. But...
don't hesitate to ask me if I can ever be of assistance."
In a short time the dragons bearing the royal party, entourage, the
Dragon Lady and her escort, and Merissa's former courier and her new
love, Mahti, had all taken to the air. One by one the dragons
teleported away, leaving Whiteriver, and its warrenlady much quieter.
[TAG: Any who wish to say a farewell to any of the parting guests...
note, not all of the guests have gone. Several of the locals will
still
hang around... and the Carnival has yet to perform.
