Subject: [DL-J] Only Time Will Tell (JP)
Day 1
Late Evening
Corwin still felt like he had been hit over the head by the boom, or
maybe keel-hauled, but his wounds were nothing compared to those of his
love. He carefully held her as Syngnath flew them to the medical
center.
"I hope we can have some peace now..." Corwin commented softly, as he
thought about the child they might have. He stopped himself from
mentioning it, as he suddenly wondered if Hsina's wounding might not
lead to its loss.
The dragon landed smoothly, yet it was still jarring for the injured
seadragon queenrider. She didn't make a sound, but her lips were
pressed together tightly.
"Only a little further and we'll have you resting comfortably," Corwin
assured her as he helped her into the medical center.
Hsina was not at all accustomed to being pampered or assisted in any
way, but somehow, despite the fact that it went against her entire
upbringing, she rather enjoyed it. "I know the distance" she said, not
wanting to seem completely helpless.
The medical staff watched as they maneuvered down the hallway. They
knew not to interfere or offer assistance until Hsina was settled into
her room. Bringing a gurney would have been a great insult... they had
learned from the previous times she'd been injured. Yet, even they
noticed a change in her, a softening.
The healers came in to tend to her needs as soon as Corwin appeared in
her doorway and motioned them over. Corwin looked over at Hsina,
knowing that she would not want him to see her weakness, and decided
that he should wait outside.
"I will go check on the others...," He said as he left the healers to
tend to Hsina.
Under her own power Hsina slowly unfastened the buckles and began
removing
the battered armor, strangely wondering if it would still be
serviceable
after the recent mauling it took, though in the back of her mind the
question was really about herself.
With the armor in a pile at her feet, she took a seat on the side of
the
bed and then lay down, finally able to relax as the intense pain of so
many wounds was slightly lessened by not supporting her weight as well.
Looking at the healer she said defiantly, "I will have only total
honesty. I need to know if the baby will live, and if I will fully
recover."
Balagon nodded as he slowly checked her over. "I can't answer you. I
can
patch you up but it is up to you, Hsina. Your own strength and desire
to get well can make all the difference."
"There are some things that cannot be changed by will, no matter how
strong."
Belagon nodded, "I won't lie to you, Hsina. You may not be able to
carry this child. I'm sorry. All I can say is to rest, for now. And
what will be... will be." Belagon finished patching her up and
wrapping
her wounds. He shook his head in wonder when she refused the herbal
that would make the pain less intense.
Hsina nodded, then gently settled onto the bed.
When Belagon and the other healers left the room, Corwin returned.
"How is Tara? She went down in the battle with Oga," Hsina asked to
Corwin, not sure she wanted to hear his reply.
Corwin looked grim. "I was just talking to Lilitha while Belagon was in
here with you. Lilitha said that Tara took a nasty wound. Raleon has
been called in to keep an especially close watch on her."
"When she regains consciousness, please tell me," Hsina said weakly.
"What if I lose the baby? Will you still stay?"
"Of course I will" Corwin replied, meaning it.
Hsina smiled weakly. "So shall I," she whispered as she drifted off to
sleep.
Corwin sat watching her. When she was asleep her face relaxed from her
customary visage and she looked almost childlike. He smoothed her dark
hair from her forehead and planted a tender kiss on it. "I will stay,
Hsina. Do not fear."
She smiled in her sleep and sighed, as if hearing and understanding his
words. What would be, would be. Only time would tell.

Summary:
Day 1
Late Evening
Corwin takes Hsina to the medical center where Belagon patches up her
wounds. Belagon tells Hsina that she might lose the baby, but only
