Day 9 Morning - hatching cavern
<snip from Tree>
Breezy half smiled at Link, "Don't worry she is in my office and
hopefully doing what she was told to do." Silently she hoped that
Jeneve would hurry. The wild look in the golden queen's eyes spelled
trouble and it was obvious Deeva and Coo weren't able to calm her any
longer.
<end snip>
As if on cue, with a swirl of her pale blue cloak the tall warrenlady
swept into the cavern.
"It's alright, Malani," she called out, more for the benefit of the
humans milling around than for the golden queen. "It's alright. It was
only an earth tremor, it's passed, and your babies are *FINE*!"
Malani drew in a huge, shuddering breath, and drew the hatchlings
closer to her, but she seemed to calm slightly at the sight of Jeneve.
**All these people...** she said to her rider, looking at the assembled
riders, nervously stepping forward in vain attempts to comfort their
new bond-mates, then jumping back when the queen snapped at them.
Jeneve's heart sank. Was Malani ever going to willingly give up the
hatchlings to their riders?
*They're your babies' riders* Jeneve explained, gently. *Your little
ones will be safe with them. They *want* to be with them - can't you
hear them?*
The hatchlings were crying and mewling loudly, and Jeneve knew they
were calling out to their riders too.
Malani's eyes clouded over with sadness. **Yes. My babies want to go to
the humans. Must I let them?**
*Yes, you must* said Jeneve, her heart aching at having to be so hard
on the broken-hearted queen. The pain at Malani's feelings of loss
flowed through the dragon-bond, and a tear trickled down the
warrenlady's cheek as she stroked Malani's glistening snout.
**And they'll still love me?** Malani asked, uncertainly.
*They'll ALWAYS love you* Jen reassured the queen. *You're their
mother*.
Malani nodded sadly, then she uncurled her tail from around the other
hatchlings. Tumbling over one another like boisterous puppies, they
raced to their riders.
Finally, she gently pushed Lily towards Mallory with her nose.
**Be careful, little ****ning one** Malani said. **And come back to me
all of you - soon**
Respectfully submitted

Day 108
Late Evening
{SNIP}
<In fact...one of the females I was with yesterday is...going to be
here...to....cuddle.> he said, trying to make things up as he went
along.
<Oh?> Almantha asked, not believing a word. <Who?>
<Who?> Flerrion repeated.
<That's what *I* asked *you!,* dummy!> Almantha snorted.
<Um....well...that one!> said Flerrion, inclining his head skyward as
watching a dragon's approach. Even though he was even worse at math
than most dragons - for whom numbers weren't a strong point to begin
with - he knew that the odds of a dragon appearing out of the sky...one
that happened to be female...and one that would back up his story...was
pretty slim.
{END SNIP}
Flerrion looked back at Almantha and Byorn, and then back up at the
sky.
Almantha snorted scornfully. <Hah! You're making all this up! You
wouldn't know a hero if one came and bit you on the tail!>
Just then, they all heard the sound of wings and watched as a violet
dragon with blue wingtips backwinged into a landing. Flerrion blinked
as he saw who it was. <Zanne?> he asked, amazed at this incredible
turn
of luck. <I am very glad to see you!> He turned his head fractionally
and gave Almantha a smug, "I-told-you-so" look.
Zanne was glad to finally find a moment to find Flerrion. She'd been
wanting to thank him for over a day. One thing after another had
happened to keep her from going to him. Zanne's rider had been given a
lecture by Thea and then they had been assigned a very long patrol.
Flerrion had been kept fairly busy, too, including flying after the
little queen on her first mating flight. But Zanne had learned that
Byron had won the flight, which had meant that Flerrion would finally
be
available.
When she flew down from the ledge outside Roxie's apartment and saw the
crimson dragon on the queen's ledge, she had been more than pleased and
was surprised that he seemed as happy to see her. He hadn't been alone
and she wondered if she should bother them, but she saw Flerrion raise
his head as if looking for her as she had approached. So, taking that
as an invitation she had circled and came in to land.
Almantha narrowed her eyes. <Well, Zanne,> she said in as sweet a tone
as was possible for her. <So you're here to do more *heroic* things
with Flerrion? I've been dying to hear what really happened. You
know,
the part about how you had to save Flerrion from tripping over
himself...>
<No, you must have misheard!> Zanne gushed, <Flerrion didn't trip at
all... Flerrion helped me save my rider and a searchling.>
Flerrion cleared his throat in embarrassment. <Well...gee, I didn't do
all THAT much,> he said, looking self-consciously down at the ledge.
<Now, don't be modest!> Zanne enthused, <If it hadn't been for you my
rider might have been eaten by a wyvern... or worse! I could never
have
gotten down that hole without you.> Zanne nuzzled the crimson dragon
appreciatively.
Flerrion, never one to refuse a nuzzle, leaned into Zanne's nuzzling.
<Well...I guess I did do a *little* bit, didn't I? You were very brave
yourself, you know, going down in that hole like that, what with a
wyvern on the prowl...>
Almantha rolled her eyes. <Yeah, right, next thing you're gonna tell me
is that the Good Behavior Fairy came along and rescued you all at the
last second, right? Boy, you must think I'm really dumb to believe
something that goofy! Sounds like something T'rell would make up!
HAH,
I'll bet he DID make it up!!>
<No... T'rell wasn't even there.> Zanne looked puzzled, <And who is
the
Good Behavior Fairy? Does she rescue lots of dragons?>
Almantha snorted, <So, you're going to try to make me believe that
Flerrion really saved you?>
<He did!> Zanne exclaimed and wrapped her tail around Flerrion,
appreciatively. <See my rider was down in this hole...> Zanne began,
trying to describe what had happened.
The more Almantha listened to Zanne's explanation, the more apparent
that she didn't believe it. <This doesn't make any sense!> she told
Zanne. <I can't even picture this...your rider was down some hole, and
you were crawling down to get her while she picked up a couple of other
humans, and Flerrion and Ishtar and S'laze and Chamelle all kept you
from sliding down the hole...oh, and there was a wyvern in there
somewhere. Is that right?>
<Well, not exactly, but that's not too far off,> Flerrion said. <Look,
pretend this ledge here is the edge of the hole....and I'm holding onto
Zanne while she's halfway down the hole trying to grab her rider...>
<No, I still don't get it!> said Almantha. <You show me!>
<Sure!> Zanne went to the ledge and looked over her shoulder, <Here
like this?> She looked back at Flerrion.
<Yes, and I was holding onto your tale... Byorn, why don't you pretend
you're me. Come here and hold onto Zanne... no... yes... right, just
like that.> He looked over at Almantha, <See? And Ishtar and S'laze
and Chamelle were holding on here, and here, and here.>
<And the humans were down the hole,> Flerrion explained. <So, Byorn,
if
you were me, you'd be slowly lowering Zanne down into the hole.>
Byorn, of course, had nothing at all against keeping hold of a pretty
dragon like Zanne, but figured he could play along. He relaxed his grip
slightly, letting several inches worth of Zanne's tail slide through
his
claws before tightening his grip once again.
Zanne looked around and thought that Byorn's grip was just a little
different than the one that Flerrion had had on her tail. But then
Flerrion was in a life and death situation and... Byorn looked like he
was enjoying it a bit too much. Yes, that was what was missing... the
tension. Byorn didn't know about the wyvern.
<And there was a wyvern...>
<Wyvern? Where??> Byorn asked, looking anxiously around. He hadn't
been
paying close attention, and instinctively began to pull backward on
Zanne's tail to get her back to where he and Flerrion could ****eld her
and Almantha from a wyvern attack.
<Ack... Not here!> Zanne dug in her claws and pulled back. A tug of
war
ensued, as Zanne pulled forward and Byorn tried to pull her back up.
Chuckling, Almantha likewise grabbed onto Byorn's tail to anchor it,
just as Flerrion had described. Thus braced, Byorn was able to pull
the
smaller Zanne backwards as her front claws dug furrows into the green.
Byorn was able to get a better grip as he got more of her back within
his reach, first getting hold of her back legs to pull her up and then
throwing his forelegs around her middle to pull her halfway onto the
ledge. He took a breath while she teetered precariously on the edge,
half on and half off the ledge. He continued to scan the sky for
wyverns...as did Flerrion, who now was now picking up on Byorn's alarm.
<No, no! Stop. I meant in the cavern. STOP! No Wyvern. Really...
none. There's no wyvern here!> Zanne cried out. <STOP! Flerrion!
We're only playacting, remember?>
Flerrion blinked, looking down at Byorn and Zanne. <Oh...yes...that's
right, isn't it?>
<Yes, there was a wyvern in the cavern!> Zanne reminded him.
<She's right,> Flerrion confided to Byorn. <I guess its all right now,
you can let her go.>
<Do I have to?> Byorn sighed. This wasn't the sort of cuddling a
dragon
got to do just any old time. He used his nose to gently ****ge and
nuzzle Zanne. <Are you sure you wouldn't like to stay like this for
awhile...?>
<NO, I mean... Yes! Don't let go!> Zanne saw the rocks below her nose
and realized that if he were to let go she'd plummet over the edge.
<Now, Almantha, can you picture what I was saying, yet?> Zanne asked
hopefully.
<Of course, there were the humans down there, you have to just sort of
imagine those,> Flerrion told the copper queen. <Oh, but there was a
wyvern...say, you could play the wyvern, couldn't you? I mean, you've
had lots of experience and all....>
<THAT NEVER HAPPENED, BUDDY BOY!!> Almantha informed him in no
uncertain
terms. But then she cocked her head. <But *I* could play anything I
wanted to be!> she decided, rising and letting go of Byorn's tail.
Byorn and Zanne slid a few feet outward before Byorn managed to get
them
stopped. Almantha hopped off the ledge and walked over to where Zanne
hung out over the edge. <So what do I need to do?> she asked,
chuckling
at Zanne's rather funny-looking position.
<Remember, my rider is down there. Now you're the wyvern coming through
the tunnels.> Zanne replied.
<Down here? Like this?> Almantha slouched down and looked up,
menacingly at the other three dragons.
<Yes, down there! In fact... you are in the perfect place to play a
second role.> Flerrion remarked.
<Really?> Almantha preened.
Flerrion nodded, <Yes, somebody has to play the pile of dung.>
