Subject: [USS Capricorn] Meeting the Captain

MD 5: 1230

Ensign Rico Medina was walking down the corridor towards his quarters
when the captain called, "Ensign Medina, re****t to my ready room."

"Aye, sir."

Rico was tired from his long day working in Stellar Cartography when he
arrived on the bridge. Walking to the ready room door, he rang the
chime. Avi Reckage said, "Enter." And Ensign Rico Medina entered when
ordered.

"Ensign Jayden Rico Medina, re****ting as ordered, Captain."

"At ease, Ensign and have a seat. I wanted to have a chat with you, if
you don't mind." Avi said.

"No, sir. I don't mind at all. What did you want to talk about?"

"I want to talk about you. First of all, welcome aboard. I'm sorry I
wasn't here when you got here."

"No problem, sir." Rico said, ****fting in his seat.

"Thank you, Ensign." Avi said, taking a sip from his glass. He was
already on his first glass of coffee, having finished now two glasses
of tea. "Would you like something to drink?" he asked of the young
ensign. When Rico said no, he went on with the business at hand. "I'm
sorry that I haven't had the chance to read much more than the basics.
Why don't you tell me a little about yourself?"

"What would you like to start with, sir?"

"Well, why don't you tell me a little about your family, first?"

"My family was a Starfleet family. My mother died when my twin brother
and I were five from a strain of the Phyrox Plague on the USS Rubrick
where she was chief medical officer."

"Ah, you have a twin?" Avi said. He had always been interested in
twins. Not surprising, given his own family.

"Yes, sir. But Raul isn't in Starfleet."

"Well, we'll try not to hold it against him. How is your relation****p
with your twin?"

"It's different. We're not that close. Raul and I are different as
night and day."

"Mm hmm." Avi said, sipping his glass. The liquid inside was still
hot, but not painfully so. "Why don't you tell me about your father
then, Ensign Medina?"

"You should know my father was a Starfleet captain of the USS
Challenger. And I would like to command my own ****p one day."

"Really? Well, that's ambitious. I didn't know either one of those
things. How did you plan to go about your desires?"

"I would like to be get on the fast track with regards to promotions. I
am looking for making lt. commander in five years."

"That sounds lke a good plan to me, Ensign, and while not impossible,
it is very difficult."

"You did it, sir." Rico said, shocking his Captain with his
forwardness.

"Yes, I suppose I did. How did you like the Academy?" Avi said,
quickly changing the subject. He was uncomfortable with such heaped
praise. Willy Jackson once said it was unfortunate, because it made
him more likely to get passed over. Though, obviously, Admiral D'Arque
begged to differ all those years ago.

"It was rather challenging. I had to work twice as hard as other cadets
in my class. I wanted to be the best and I was as I graduated with
honors, sir."

"All that sounds good." Avi said, though he wasn't quite sure how he
felt about what he perceived to be a certain level or arrogance in this
ensign. Self-confidence was one thing, but he sensed it was more with
this one. "Well, as I'm sure you know, you've been assigned as
Operations Manager here."

"Thank you, Captain. I accept your offer."

"Well, I wouldn't say its my offer, more like Starfleet's, but either
way, let's make this official. Please rise." He said, standing as the
newly appointed Ops manager did too. "Ensign Jayden Rico Medina, you
are hereby promoted to operations officer with all the rights and
privileges that come along with that position."

"Thank you, sir."

"Don't thank me. Just to warn you, though, I'm a former Ops guy,
myself, so inadvertently, I'll probably have an eye on what you're
doing. Don't take it personally." The ensign smiled, but said
nothing. Smartly. He exited the ready room to the bridge. And upon his
exit, he was greeted by a thunderous round of applause by the senior
staff.

"Did everyone know about this but me?" he asked, blu****ng.

Respectfully submitted,
Ensign Jayden Rico Medina
Ops Manager
USS Capricorn
NCC 1753

and

Captain Avi Reckage

Commanding Officer

USS Capricorn

NCC 1753
