Subject: [DL-J] Tortured Soul

Day 1
Evening

Tyler groaned as he realized what Gus was going to do. He pushed up
onto his elbows as he felt the strength returning to his limbs. It
suddenly dawned on him that it had been Oga's magic and the scepter
that
had been draining him of his strength. With Oga now impaled on Hsina's
blade, and the scepter removed from his grasp, he was able to once
again
move freely.

"Gus!" By the egg, he had to stop her! His feet found their wings as
he raced after his cousin, only to find his way blocked by the sharp
sword of one very determined and angry swordsmaster.

[SNIP]
"We've got to stop her!" Tyler panted breathlessly.

"Stop her? Why?" Jerram asked. "It's Oga we need to stop!"

"Hsina and the others are handling Oga!" Tyler cried. The words
tumbled
from him almost too fast to follow, but Jerram got the overall message
-
the Scepter was going to destroy itself, and Gus had taken it out of
the
warren.

"By the gods...!" Jerram whispered, turning even as the words left his
lips as he broke into a run.
[END SNIP]

"You have to take it from her!" Tyler yelled after Jerram as he watched
the man vault onto his dragon's back. "It won't let her let go!!!"

<Plastyra!  Where are you!!>

The multi-colored dragon swooped down onto the green. She was
obviously
tired from all of the tele****ting and flying she'd done that day, but
she would do anything for her rider, and right now her rider wanted
more
than anything to stop Loki's from doing something he knew everyone
would
regret.

Plastyra made a valiant effort, launching herself skyward, just in time
to see Seydor tele****t.

<I don't know where they went!> The young dragon cried and turned
toward
the sea, where there was a glow to the west brighter than the sunset
should have been. She pumped her wings as hard as she could, but she
was exhausted, and no amount of willpower was going to get her there in
time.

The light ahead of them flashed a brilliant white and then was gone.

"NO!" Tyler knew in his heart that his cousin was gone.

Plastyra faltered in her forward flight, almost too tired to complete
the turn for home. She had just managed to get her nose pointed in the
right direction when she was hit from behind by a wind that flung her
forward and out of control.

<Plas!> Tyler screamed out as the dragon was flipped end over end.

In desperation, Plastyra tucked in her tail and wings and rolled,
<Rider! Hold on!!!> But Tyler could not answer, as he lost
consciousness; his last thought being that he hoped Plastyra wouldn't
get too badly hurt when they hit the water.

The shock wave passed and Plastyra felt herself freefalling. Now
knowing at least which way was down, she righted herself and snapped
open her wings to stop her downward plummeting. She felt her
overworked
wing muscles snap and agony ripped through them. But she would not let
her rider fall! She would make it to Jasra -- if it were the last
thing
she did!

---

What seemed like an eternity later, the poor dragon managed to make it
back to the sands of Jasra's beach. She was so low that she skimmed
the
water with her wingtips before crash-landing onto a dune.

---

Hands were lifting him down as Tyler regained consciousness,
"Plastyra?"

He gasped as he opened his eyes and saw the dragon collapsed in the
sand.

"Easy, she'll be fine... just need to give her a chance to rest," came
a
soothing and familiar voice.

Tyler let them help him up the beach and into the warren before again
wondering aloud, "Gus and Loki?"

"Gone." Came the same cultured voice. "Sorry."

Tyler felt his throat close up but managed to again ask the next
painful
question, "Jerram and Seydor?"

"They returned to the warren. They'll be... fine." Sarilyn said,
softly.

Tyler nodded and managed to focus on the young woman's face and smiled,
"Thanks... Sari...."

---
[TAG: Jeanette -- if you would like? Anyone else around to aid in the
rescue?]
---

Tyler sighed, "Oh, Gus. Why?"

His heart ached at the loss of someone he had only recently begun to
think of as 'family'. And thinking of family made him wonder about
K'mal. Last he had seen them, K'mal and Auli'i had been battling some
Kataani, when Gus had told Tyler to make a run to the warren for
bandages and supplies -- and he hadn't returned. K'mal would be
furious
with him, Tyler thought sadly.

Tyler hadn't thought of who else might be furious with him, but a
second
later he found out, as Dolfis came barreling into him.

The old pirate grabbed Tyler by the lapels and yanked him up off his
feet. "Is she gone?? Tell me you stopped her. Tell me!!" He shouted
into Tyler's face, spittle spraying from his mouth.

Tyler managed to gasp out, his teeth rattling in his head, "We tried,
she was too far out..."

"NO!" Dolfis yelled. "Why did you let her take it from you! You had
the scepter! You should have taken it! You... YOU should be Dead!
Not
her... not Augusta!"

"Leave him alone!" Sarilyn cried out as Dolfis was pulled back, but
Tyler knew Dolfis had already let him go before they had separated
them.
Dolfis spun away, pu****ng his way through the throng of onlookers, his
face a tortured mask.

Tyler looked at the sea of faces, "K'mal?" He needed him. Where was
he? He looked around again and saw Dylan coming toward him.

"Dylan!"

She had been crying. Her face was streaked with tears, but she came
and
put her arms around Tyler and held him.

"I be so sorry for yer losses," she murmured.

Losses? Tyler shook his head. She had said... losses? As in... more
than one? "Gus... and..."

"K'mal. I am sorry I didna get ta know him, but I know ya cared deeply
fer him."

"K'mal?" Tyler's head snapped up and he looked around for the
swaggering young man who had claimed his heart. "No! He's...
he's...."

Dylan's eyes widened, "Ya didna know? Oh! Tyler, I be so sorry ta be
the one ta tell ya!" Her eyes filled with tears.

[TAG: Carys! -- He'll be a basket case!]
