Day 17
Late Afternoon

With lunch finished, J'red and Ari sadly had to resume their busy
schedule. He walked with her to the door of his office and opened it
for her, smiling down at her warmly.

As they paused there to say their farewells, they saw a young woman
leaving Merissa's office looking rather distressed.

"Jilly?" J'red addressed her, "Is there something amiss?"

Jilly looked from one to the other and then gushed out, "Them carny
people're beating their animals! I saw one of 'em take a whip after a
poor bear. An' I tol' Miss Merissa! I asked her to stop 'em, but... "

"That's awful!" Ari exclaimed.

J'red frowned, "But...?"

"She tells me that Chrysthal spoke to some one named... Ophar? Is that
a dragon name? An' he'd take care of the bear."

Ari gasped. "Ophar! That's Jael's dragon."

J'red's frown deepened. "Merissa said that Jael would take care of
it?"

"Yes, he's at the carny now talkin' to some man." Jilly looked more
concerned as she saw the dark look on J'red's face. "D'ya think he
will?"

"No." J'red snorted in disgust. "I can't believe that Merissa would
trust Jael with something like that!"

He began to walk down the hall to the queenrider's office, when Ari
reached out and gently put her hand on his arm.

"Maybe ya shouldna be botherin' the Warrenlady today? She's got a lot
on her mind, you know?" Ari suggested gently.

J'red paused and looked from Ari to Jilly and then nodded, "Fine. I'll
go check on this bear-story myself. Now were did you see this bear
being whipped?" Just what he needed more problems with a bear. He
still smarted from the blow Faylen had given him earlier over another
bear.

Jilly described the tent scene where she had witnessed the brutality.
It sounded awful and he knew that if Dru'Kar heard about the
mistreatment of the bear by the carny-folk there wouldn't be a tent
left
standing.

"I have a few duties to attend to before I can go over there, but I
promise you, Jilly, I will personally go and see for myself." J'red
smiled at the young woman.

[TAG: Bianca -- is Jilly satisfied now? Tag: Carys -- Are Bubba and
Jael still talking in the later afternoon, and what will J'red find out
there?]

Early Evening

---

Merissa could smell an interesting, gamey odor as she approached the
dining hall. Right out front a small group or warrenfolk was gathering
and it was growing in number. People were gawking at the huge
barbarian
who was stripped almost ****d, drenched in sweat, as he turned a huge
spit over an open pit. On the spit were various cuts of an unknown
meat, which was what was producing the odor that was permeating the
area.

As the warrenlady approached the crowd parted to let her through. She
looked at Dru'Kar who nodded to her as drew near. She looked from the
large man to the roasting meat with a small questioning look on her
face, "The mother bear?"

"Yes. I cannot let her death be without purpose," He said.

"Of course," Merissa agreed, though she couldn't help but look at the
meat a little askance. She wondered how many people would be brave
enough to eat it. If no people would, she was sure there were a few
dragons that would. She managed to smile at Dru'Kar.

The large man pulled a sharp knife from the belt around his waist and
stepped toward the spit. He sliced off a hunk of bear meat and
expertly
caught it on the end of the knife before it plummeted into the fire.
Turning with an agility that belied his great bulk, he offered the
piece
to Merissa. "It would be a great honor if you would eat the first of
the bear-mother, being the 'Mother' of the 'Warren'"

Merissa's dark eyes opened wide and she took a small step back, trying
to think of a way to gracefully decline. Unable to come up with any,
she gingerly took the piece offered, blowing on it, as it was still
sizzling hot. She looked at the meat and then to Dru'Kar's expectant
and pleased expression and stealing her nerves, she took a small bite.

It was a bit... chewy... but Merissa managed to swallow it down and
smiled at Dru'Kar, "Thank you for the honor."

With all that had transpired during the day, Merissa had planned on
taking a tray of food back to her office, but when she got into the
dining hall, she found herself chatting with first one and then another
rider. Soon she was seated at a crowded table with people chatting and
discussing everything from the previous night's ball to the quality of
the ale served at the Inn.

She should do this more often, she thought. It was a much better way to
get information about the anxieties and joys of the warrenfolk. Many
questions were raised and problems were solved before dinner was
finished.

[TAG: Open... anyone want to chat with the warrenlady?]

NRPG: Sorry it's short. Just wanted to move a few things along and
fill in some holes.
