Subject: [USS Capricorn] The Right Thing!

MD 5:1430 Montana's office around noon

The morning briefing had been quieter then usual with most of the
officers giving short re****ts and little more. The usual bantering of
ideas and suggestions was noticeably lacking. Of course there was the
possibility that everyone was still just plain tired, but Montana
didn't think that was the real reason. They had gotten more then a
bloody nose on this mission and it didn't sit well with any of them.

It was quite obvious that Ury was plain irritated with the whole thing,
and from his covert glances she didn't doubt for a second that he was
still questioning her judgement, whether cared to admit it or not. But
then he had every right too. It was her order that had split the away
team. An order, that had caused many injuries and the deaths of several
crewman. Yet, there had been no indications of any danger. The scans
from the ****p and planet side had been completely wrong.

Thankfully Avi had put more warning beacons in place before their
departure. No sense in more people getting killed, regardless of the
species. If an unwary traveler were to stumble on that place... Maybe
that's what had happened with Walker, and that's how Petra had come to
be there. No, she couldn't believe that the former First Officer had
fallen prey to those beasts below. He was way too smart to suc***b to
Marquis' brand of treachery. But then, she had thought she was smart
too, and the man had controlled her like a puppet on a string.

Images of the grisly remains of the two lost crewman intruded into her
mind and the redhead suddenly ****vered as if a bucket of ice water had
just been dumped over her head.. Marquis was at the center of all this
somehow and as far as Montana was concerned he might as well have been
the one to do the attacking. The man knew of the dangers that lurked on
the planet and yet had done nothing, given them no warning. Why? What
were his motives? And now this deceiver was on her ****p!

The faint beep of several messages coming in brought her out of her
reverie. One from DS 10 caught her eye, mainly because it was encrypted
with an Andorian high security code meant for her eyes only. The only
andorian she could think of was......now why would Eejay be...the First
Officer blinked in sudden remembrance.

[..] A few minutes later

Montana was so focused on the re****t in front of her she didn't hear
the air vent open. But she instinctively sensed a new presence and
started to turn when a ball of black fur skidded across the desk at
her.

"****!" the redhead exclaimed throwing up her arms to protect herself
from the flailing claws. "Damn it Petra!" Montana snapped managing to
shove the cat away without getting scratched.

Righting herself, the cat gave a little shake, flipped it's tail, then
walked in a circle before sitting down. "Sheesh, you need to tell them
to go easy on the polish!" The cat meowed and carefully stretched out
on the desktop. "Did you miss me?"

"NO and do you mind?" The First Officer answered with a hint of disdain
and casually but quickly closed the re****t on the screen. "And just for
the record, you know it's really rather creepy talking to a cat!"

"Well, I think it's rather creepy talking to puny bi-peds, but I won't
hold it against you!" The feline rumbled smugly before she began to
systematically clean the black fur.

The redhead snorted in annoyance turning back to the screen in hopes
that if she ignored the Ambraxian that maybe she would take the hint
and leave. The cat-woman had a tendency to irritate and unsettle making
her feel inferior, a feeling Montana most definitely didn't like.

After several minutes of silence, the licking motion and the flipping
tail began to unnerve the tall woman. "Do you mind? Why don't you go
torment a mouse or something?"

The cat ignored the woman and continued with her lazy grooming. "You
know you could be a little more grateful." She finally purred stopping
to gaze at the officer.

"Grate...." Montana blurted out before her lips clamped shut in a grim
line. Flipping off the view screen she leaned back in her chair and
crossed her arms defensively. It was true, they did owe the cat a debt
of gratitude. If Petra hadn't made her presence known and for some
unknown reason watched out for them, how many more lives would have
been lost?

Thoughts of being trapped in the catacombs without her help pricked at
the edge of her mind and Montana's demeanor softened a little. "Thank
you....for your help!"

Petra's feline lips curled into a bizarre looking grin as she stretched
out further, flexing her claws with a yawn. For several minutes she
just sat quietly watching the tall woman, her tail tapping rhythmically
as the two females gauged each other's measure.

Finally Montana leaned forward and gently laid her hand on the flipping
appendage. "So what do you want Petra? Questions? Answers? Just want to
chitchat? What? You have broken just about every regulation I know of,
yet it's become painfully obvious with all our technology we have
little control over what you do. I have no doubt that trying to catch
you to throw you off the ****p could be, I think, rather detrimental to
life and limb! So what do you want, and why are you here again? And how
the hell did you get on that planet in the first place? Where's
Walker?"

The tail jerked free lightly swatting the back of Montana's hand and a
sound akin to an amused chuckle emanated from the little feline, "Don't
know, do ya?"

The redhead dropped back in her chair as if she'd been slapped and her
temper flared. "Listen cat!!! I'm not about to sit here and play games
with you! If you are going to be on this ****p, the rules haven't
changed!. You'll carry your own weight and work in the lounge like
before! I'm really not sure why, but Kyrie and the others have actually
missed you! AND most im****tantly you will stay out of the Captain's
way!"

The Ambraxian rose to its feet and moved to sit directly in front of
her. Yellow green eyes gazed into emerald blue, black whiskers fainting
twitching, "I needed a ride, consider yourself lucky I chose you
Starfleet! Others haven't been quite so fortunate in their dealings
with your guests..or their friends!" Trotting to the end of the desk
Petra looked over her shoulder. "Watch yourself Red, they aren't what
they seem!" Dropping to the floor the cat meowed loudly and the doors
to Montana's office opened, trotting out she hesitated only briefly.
"And tell that boyfriend of yours that he got off easy this time, he
ever kicks me again he'll be tasting claws!"

The doors slid closed behind the animal and Montana blinked in surprise
at the odd warning realizing Petra had not answered her questions. With
a deep sigh she rolled her eyes and pulled up the message from DS10.

MD 5:1730 at the contemplation pool

The Captain and First Officer entered the Pool, Montana giving the
computer commands for a balmy day on the beach. The environmental
controls began to change the room to suit the command. Avi sighed, with
a faint smile he nodded in appreciation, "Now, that's more like it!"

Wasting no time the tall redhead dropped her robe revealing her usual
one piece and was in the water before she saw the frown of disapproval
from her superior office. Surfacing she smiled, "C'mon in slowpoke, the
water is great!" Noticing his frown she sighed, "Avi, c.."

"You're always breaking the rules of the pool Montana," He quipped
slipping off his robe and trunks.

Montana flushed a deep crimson and turned away. No matter how she tried
she just couldn't adopt his lighthearted casual attitude about things.

"Aw, c'mon Montana, you need to lighten up. It's not like we haven't
been here before!"

Letting her body float float freely she frowned, "Yeah, and look what
happened last time!" She answered sharply, swimming over to lean on the
side of the pool.

"Yeah! We were rudely interrupted if I recall! Which reminds me,
computer, lock the door!"

"AVI!" Montana squeaked indignantly yet inwardly more then pleased.

"You know since you insist on breaking the rules maybe we should
replicate one of those ***y string jobs. It sure would make things a
lot easier! Of course then I could order you to follow the rules!"

Montana choked, her cheeks flu****ng under the suggestive leer he gave
her. Backing away several steps she saw him tense getting ready to make
a running dive. As Avi started forward, her greenish eyes glowed with
mischief as she gripped the side and snapped off the command,
"Computer, Tsunami, Level 1!"

A large wave suddenly rose out of the pool and hit the Captain full
force almost knocking him off his feet. Peals of laughter erupted from
the redhead at the sight before her. Avi stood in all his ****d glory
with his hands on his hips and a disgusted look on his face. The water
dripping off of him created such a silly visual she couldn't help
herself. The sound of her mirth brought a devilish grin to his face.
"Ahhh, so the pretty redhead wants to play! I think I just may have to
oblige her."

Her eyes widened at the wicked grin. A small eep escaped, and Montana
knew she was in trouble, but trouble of the most pleasant kind.
Launching herself off the side her long strokes slicing cleanly through
the water carrying her towards the center of the pool.

"You aren't getting away that easy woman!" Avi called out sprinting
around the pool. With a loud whooping holler he jumped into the air
curled into a perfect cannonball to hit the water only a few feet from
her. The current instantly sucked Montana under and she came up
laughing and coughing only to be quickly enfolded in her lover's
waiting arms. "Gotchya!"

[..] A little later

Avi lay half sitting, his elbows on the steps of the pool, Montana's
cheek resting on his knee with the rest of her floating languidly on
the gentle waves. He smiled tenderly his gaze roaming over the shapely
body stretched out before him.

Montana sighed partly from her relaxed state, and partly out of
irritation. "For petes sake Avi, you're the Captain of a Star****p, I
can't believe you let him dismiss you like some second grade lacky! *Oh
I'll come back later* " She mocked. Avi had just told her about his
meeting with Marquis and Istria and the First Officer was instantly on
the alert. "And Lt. Talara is a starfleet officer and needs to start
acting like one, she was down there against orders and the way she was
mooning over Marquis on the planet was ridiculous, and a severe breach
of protocol."

He fleeting frown crossed his face at the mention of the science
officer but it lasted only a moment, "You know Montana, it wouldn't for
hurt you to moon over me like that once in awhile." Avi grinned
ignoring the scolding tone. He was answered with a sour look and the
sharp click of tongue that brought a chuckle from the man. "Well, you
can't blame a guy for trying!"

Montana face softened, the beautiful smile she bestowed upon him took
his breath away, and he inhaled sharply his body instantly answering
that gorgeous smile, "You know we're going to be late for dinner. Harry
and Maria.."

"Can wait!" He answered in a husky tone his desire becoming quite
obvious. "We've still got a few minutes left on our time and I intend
to take full advantage of ... you!" Sliding his hands under her arms he
pulled her up across him into a fiery kiss, their wet bodies
intertwining in an *****c dance of desire as the rolling waves washed
over them.

[..] 1900 in the Fontaine's Quarters after dinner

"That must have been quit a sight!" Harry chuckled raising his glass to
his Commanding Officer.

"Oh, I think it's priceless! Avi kicking the cat! That is just way too
funny!" Maria giggled.

Montana's smile was pensive as she added, "That explains the warning I
got from her earlier."

Avi arched a brow, "Oh?"

The tall redhead pursed her lips, "Something about you tasting claws if
you ever kicked her again!"

The Capricorn Commander grinned, Harry chuckled and Maria's howls of
laughter echoed through the room. Montana half smiled emitting a small
sigh. The hostess still laughing went to the counter for more
refreshments happily chatting back and forth with the two men.

Staring over the rim of his glass Harry gazed hard at Montana, "So boss
what's up? You're awful quiet tonight?" His words brought a silence
over the room as all eyes turned to stare at the First Officer.

"Montana?" Avi questioned eyeing her closely.

The redhead sighed, Petra was the last thing she wanted to discuss,
mainly because she knew he wouldn't like any of it, "I really didn't
want to bring it up and ruin the evening but since you.."

"Ahha, it's about the cat?" Maria interjected.

Part of what she had to tell him was classified but the other part
would just be a distasteful subject to him more then anything. But she
felt it really was necessary and the right thing to do. Taking a deep
breath Montana slowly exhaled trying to figure out how to word it so
hopefully Avi wouldn't explode but she couldn't think of any gentle way
to do this. Thoughtfully she rubbed her cheek, "Avi, I think 'you'
should personally thank her for her help."

The sound of the man choking on his drink brought Harry to his feet to
pat on his Captain's back. "Jeezus Montana, what are you trying to do,
kill him!"

contemplation pool and he shares his visit with Marquis, to which
Montana chides him for being so complacent.
