Subject: [DL-D] - Life and Death
Day 130
Evening
Hatching Cavern
Weya stood transfixed as she watched in horror as the ground opened up
and
began to swallow the eggs. The chaos swirled around her as the voices
and
roars of panic danced about her.
Weya stood..transfixed.
She could not say why...and even questioned herself as to why she did
not
react.
She was fascinated with the fact that she felt calm..peaceful and
serene.
It was as if she knew that all was well. Only from the view before her
eyes.. told another story.
She turned and watched in true wonderment as one of the largest eggs
began
to crack, pop and rock. Watching the shell fragments pop off and fly
about
as bits of color shone through.
White..she saw white..and then she smiled. There were two of them! As
identical as the two boys who stood before them grinning from ear to
ear.
She smiled and nodded and heard herself exclaim their cuteness. They
were
so adorable.and she remembered that once Dante had promised her she
would
one day have the joy she now saw on Alden's and Alton's face.
She watched the others rush forward and grab an egg to attempt to
rescue
them before they suffered the fate of those that had slipped through
the
slowly enlarging opening.
The din that rang in her ears was muffled and muted and altho she stood
surrounded by the chaos she was isolated as if she stood from the
sidelines
to watch the turmoil before her.
Her only focus was the chasm that loomed before her..beckoning
her.calling
to her. As if in a dream she slowly walked straight through the
swirling
madness as if it did not exist.
She stopped at the mouth of the dark opening that was still issuing
foul
dank musty air up from its bowels. Weya knelt down and studied the
opening
and peered as best she could into the dark fathomless pit.
She heard something..or someone? She looked up and saw that everyone
was
too busy rushing about trying to rescue the remainder of eggs from the
danger. She turned slowly around and peered back down the hole.
She saw a small ledge.one that she could easily get down..and back up
if
needs be. She gingerly lowered herself down into the darkness and
found the
rough ledge and made sure she was stable before kneeling down to see if
she
could see or hear anything below.
She heard a funny scratching noise...and a faint sound unfamiliar to
her.
She paused and waited..nothing she could sense was dangerous..she used
the
faint light from above her as a guide and slowly made her way down to
the
next small ledge in the cavern formation.
As her eyes grew accustomed to the darkness she could make out another
ledge...lower than the one she was one. It appeared to be holding
something. Weya lay on her stomach to get as close as she could to see
what
it was.
Eggs!
Some of the eggs that had tumbled down the chasm had landed on the
ledge
resting in safety. Well..at least from this angle they appeared safe.
She
kneeled back up and looked up towards the hole and realized.no one
knew..and
it was up to her to rescue what precious cargo she could.
Weya took a moment to send up prayers to the Gods and for the guidance
she
would need to complete this task that had been given her. She pondered
for
a moment of all that her grandparents had spoken of and taught her.
She clasp the amulet that she never removed..remembering the one time
it had
been taken from her. She steadied herself and made a plan and with a
deep
breath she lowered herself down slowly to the next ledge beneath her.
The darkness grew and it took some time for her eyes to adjust to the
dark.
The scraping noises were louder along with a strange breathing sound.
As if
a great beast had been wounded and was slowly making its way towards
her.
If that was so.she did not have much time. She knelt down and realized
she
had to go down one more level to reach the small ledge that held what
she
was seeking.
Bracing herself..she lowered herself again and steadied her footing.
She
knelt down and felt the smooth shell of one of the eggs. The shell was
still warm.but cooling and she knew enough to know it needed warmth to
finish hatching.
There were several other eggs that lay beneath this one, as she moved
to
check them out her hand felt a warm sticky substance. She softly cried
out
as she knew what it was. She gently moved her hand along the rough
ledge
and felt the shards of broken shell and knew that this one had not
survived
the plummet from above.
Weya felt the warmth of her tears rolls down her cheeks. She did not
know
why this affected her so, only that this had been an innocent
life.taken by
evil for no other purpose than because what ever hunted them showed no
mercy.
She could not move much more or risk the chance this one egg that lay
precariously on top of the broken egg might topple and plummet to the
bottom..lost for sure.
She curled up next to the egg and tried to wrap it in as best she could
to
give it warmth and hoped it survived. As she sat there in the dark she
wondered about all that she had heard of this joining.
She reflected on the words of Dante and what she had learned from
watching
him and Jacks. She remembered what Jason had told her and he had
guaranteed
her that she would have a dragon.
Akety had taught her and the others about things concerning the dragons
and
the bond; along with the joy, the gift and the responsibility. She
wondered
what would happen to those who were to join with those lost. Would
they
ever find another? Or was this their only chance? What if the dragon
Jason
and Dante had promised her lay at the bottom crushed from the fall?
Weya pushed those thoughts from her and snuggled back on the ledge and
held
the egg. Altho it was a large size and took up most of her lap she got
as
comfortable as possible.
The chill from the cavern below was beginning to creep under her
garments
and bring the goose-bumps along her skin. The strange sounds grew and
altho
she could pick out some of them, some were foreign and this worried
her.
For some reason her calm was still with her. Sitting in the dark,
alone and
no one knew where she was holding an egg that she did not know if she
could
save she felt a comforting peace.
As she held the egg feeling drowsy she absent-mindedly caressed the
shell as
if trying to help warm it up. She closed her eyes and let the calmness
surround her. She found she humming a little tune and smiled for it was
the
one her grandmother had hummed to her when she had been sick.
Sitting on the ledge she softly rocked and hummed the tune to bring
comfort
to the little one inside. Lulled into that semi dream state she was
startled
awake when she felt it shake and a popping noise could be heard.
The small tinkling of the bits of shell that tumbled down the side of
the
cavern they were sitting on suddenly sounded louder. A soft snarling
noise
along with that other strange breathing grew closer.
As the bits of shell popped off and flew in all directions...a soft
cooing
noise emitted from the one within the egg. Weya sat in the semi
darkness
and altho could not see well, could feel the little one emerge and
first
stretch the one wing and leg then nestle into her to stretch the other
side.
<*You rescued me sister*> a soft bell like tone echoed in her head.
Weya blinked and peered closer. She shook her head for she knew she
must be
dreaming. How did it speak to her? And use the ancient words she
remembered from her grandparents.
"Cu'we" Weya whispered softly in the ancient tongue as she marveled at
this
little being before her.
<*Yes sister.that is who I am..your beloved Cu'we*> the voice again
sounded
in her head.
The little dragonet nuzzled her and nestled closer. <*I am hungry
sister..and cold...where are the others?*>
Weya felt her throat thicken as the tears came once again. "They are
lost
little one...it appears only you survived the fall." She whispered
softly.
The anguish rang out in Weya's mind and she thought she heard it echo
through out the cavern. She clung to the little one as she mourned and
prayed someone would find them..and not those things that had attacked
them.
The scrapping noises and growls appeared to grow closer and Weya
realized
they were in serious danger. She had not thought to say anything to
anyone.so compelled and drawn to the hole she had been.
"Little one.we need to try to slowly make out way up..the evil ones are
coming." Weya whispered as softly as she could, but even those whispers
seemed to echo loudly.
<*Sister...you only have to think of what you wish me to know..I can
hear
you as you hear me..*>
*Really?* Weya thought and was flooded with happy thoughts immediately.
*By
the Powers! * she thought again.
Again she was flooded with a soft laugh and warm feelings of comfort.
Weya's heart stopped when she smelled the intruders before hearing
them.
They grew closer and she was sure they would both be lost. Weya moved
as
silently as she could until they were near the wall and could begin to
climb
up.
But they needed a distraction. Weya looked down at the crushed egg
beneath
and closed her eyes.
<*It is alright my sister..let her death be not in vain.*>
Weya nodded and with tears flowing once again she slowly nudged the
large
egg and helped it over the rim of the ledge they stood on and let it
finish
its descent. The sound as it splattered on the cavern floor was eerie
but
not as horrid as the sounds of the beast below squealing in delight as
it
began to devour the egg's contents.
Using the diversion as cover for them to climb up.Weya slowly and with
great
trepidation scaled up the side of the cavern to the ledge above them
with
her arm around her precious cargo.
Once on the next ledge up she hoped they would not be discovered. For
she
was sure if she could climb up.so could they. She strained to hear if
any
sounds could be heard from above.but Weya heard nothing..except the
sounds
below them as now it appeared 2 beasts were cleaning up their treats.
The
hissing causing the hairs to rise up and she felt instantly chilled.
Weya huddle with the little one and wrapped her up in her clothing as
best
as possible so that she would be warm.
<*I am so hungry sister*> she softly cried. Weya only nodded not sure
what
to do. She remembered she carried some Was'na with her and reached for
her
pack and rummaged around until she found some. Breaking it off in
little
bits she feed the dragonet and slipped some for herself. She was not
sure
how long they would be in this dark hole..but with no one above she
could
not risk being discovered by those below.
The sounds of the beasts hunting for more food reminded Weya of skunks
as
they foraged for food. They certainly smelled as bad as those
rodents.too
bad they were not as harmless.
The foraging grew closer and Weya knew they were beginning to slowly
snake
their way up the wall in search of more debris from the falling eggs.
Weya
closed her eyes and hoped they were high enough to keep from being
found.
She willed herself not to move as the hissing grew closer.
If only...they found another egg or so to devour while she climbed the
last
ledge up and then to possible freedom.
<*We will be safe Sister.fear not..*> the little dragonet crooned to
Weya
causing her to smile for wasn't she the one who was trying to care for
and
protect this little one.
Weya hunkered down the best she could keeping the little one tightly
against
her to ensure she was safe and warm. Weya eyed the next ledge..perhaps
it
was possible.the beasts appeared to have moved away from them..she
needed to
take the risk.they were still too low and close to them.
*Hold on as tight as you can..we are goin up* Weya thought. She was
glad
for some reason she could do this now.
Weya slowly and as silently as possible; rose up and reached for the
ledge
above them. She made sure she had the best possible grip for they
would not
have another chance.
With hands and feet in place the best she could..she scaled the wall
and
moved up towards the ledge above them. She managed to maneuver herself
on
her side to begin to roll to her back when a section of the ledge
cracked
and let go.
Weya cried out in fear as she managed somehow to roll to her back altho
her
legs were dangling over.
The change in the sound of the snarling told Weya she had given away
their
position. She lay on her back and scooted as close to the wall and
pulled
her legs up. The two huddled together as Weya gathered her breath and
tried
to see if it was possible to make that last bit to freedom.
She could not hear any noise or sounds that anyone was above them. The
snarling and what sounded like snapping appeared to be growing closer.
The
next sound was when the beasts had discovered the lower ledge with a
few
eggs on them.
Weya huddled tightly against the wall arms around the little one and
closed
her eyes. The sounds as the fought over the remains and the chomping
afterwards sent chills up and down Weya's frame.
She hummed the tune softly to bring them both comfort. Softly rocking
she
walked down the path of her memory and altho she had regrets of things
not
seen or experience all in all..she found she had walked a good life.
She
had been blessed.
The angry snarling grew louder...and the hissing closer. Suddenly she
was
being showered from debris falling from above. As Weya looked up all
she
saw was a snarling snout of teeth. She closed her eyes and waited.
{TAG - Eddie...and any else who have discovered Weya is missing..and
heard
the cries from one of the dragonets.)
(SUMMARY)
Weya startled and in shock of the attack on the Eggs and the Hatching
ground
finds herself oddly watching the turmoil before her and finding herself
more
as a spectator than participant.
She finds herself drawn to the gaping hole and goes down without anyone
seeing her. She finds the remains of some eggs and one that has not
yet
succumbed.
It hatches as the beasts return from below and grow closer. Weya
slowly
makes her way up to the last ledge before she is discovered.
