Subject: [DL-J] Sharing The Night Together (JP)
Late Night, Day 1
After finishing their mission of getting the Kataani healers to the
med center, Eliase and Ansel headed back to her apartment to try and
get some sleep. Khamorray reported that his and Ansel's apartment had,
regrettably, been the scene of one of the many skirmishes between the
Kataani landing forces and Hsina's handpicked defenders. The stone
walls were of course undamaged, but everything else was pretty much a
mess, the seadragon reported. Eliase's apartment, by contrast, was
undamaged.
Ansel tried to contact Menia to let the red dragon - and more
importantly her rider - know that he was okay. He hadn't talked to Bel
since just before he'd set out with Corwin's wing on their 'training
cruise,' more than 24 hours earlier. Since then they'd fought a war
and mourned many lost riders, dragons, and warrenfolk. He knew that
Bel wasn't among the lost, because he could sense Menia's presence; the
red dragon was just asleep and not therefore not able to answer him.
That told him at least that Bel had come through all of this as well.
He was too exhausted to search tonight, though. Between the fighting
and worries about Tara, all he wanted was a place to fall on his face
and sleep for a week.
The walk to Eliase's apartment was quiet, each rider deep in their
own thoughts. Eliase ushered Ansel into the apartment and she glanced
around. It was a small place, really only one big room. She moved
past the small table and went to sit on the edge of the bed. She kicked
off her shoes and stretched a bit, rubbing her shoulders as best as she
could.
"It's not much, but come on in," she offered to Ansel.
Ansel nodded wearily and looked around the small room. It was
typical for a seadragon apartment, very similar to his own. These were
usually of restricted size because of the need to build the human
quarters on a higher level than the dragon's. Thus, they tended to be
walled ledges more than anything else.
Like his, it had only one bed. "Thanks," he said, sitting down on
the floor and leaning back against the wall facing her. "I almost feel
guilty that we're not out there helping with...something."
Eliase nodded and reclined back on her bed. "Well I guess we can try
and get some sleep and then after that we can try and help out more."
Ansel nodded back and they yawned at the same time. Eliase laughed a
bit and took a moment to peek out on the ledge where their two dragons
were resting comfortably, snuggled together. Eliase yawned again and
within moments she was asleep.
The dreams came slowly at first. The warren under attack worse than
had really happened. Eliase was fighting alongside the others, but
they were losing ground. Eliase began to moan softly in her sleep. In
her dream everyone was dying around her. Corwin, Hsina, Tara and then
Ansel. She began to cry, sweat covered her body and she became tangled
in the sheets as she thrashed on her bed, in her dream fighting for her
life.
Ansel was only sleeping lightly. He was continually expecting to hear
the bad news from Khamorray...or hear the horrible scream from his
sister's queen before she vanished forever. He wished someone could
have told him something about her condition, anything...
He snapped awake at the sounds of someone crying, his fogged mind
telling him that the worst had happened. He sat bolt upright, and only
then realized it was Eliase. He got up and hurried over to her,
kneeling down by the bed.
"Eliase...are you ok?" he asked in a worried whisper, placing a hand
on her shoulder to try and wake her. "Eliase?? Wake up!" She'd been
so sick before, he hoped that he hadn't asked too much of her, dragging
her off to get those Kataani healers...
Eliase gasped and sat up in bed. With wide eyes she looked over at
Ansel. "Ansel..?" She threw her arms around him and began to cry again.
"Hey, it's all right," he told her, putting his arms around her as
well. "You must have been having a bad dream, that's all." He
continued to hold her, not sure of what to do next. "It's all right,"
he repeated.
It took a few minutes before Eliase began to calm. Then she sat back
and brushed her hand across her face. "It was so awful.." she
whispered. She glanced up at Ansel.
He nodded understandingly. "Well...there's been a lot of awful things
happening out there, so its no wonder people are having bad dreams
about them." He couldn't help thinking about the casualties in their
own wing, which had somehow come through mostly intact. But Gus and
her wing...he quickly pushed the thought out of his mind. If he
started thinking of Gus, and of all the friends of Alpha wing they'd
lost, Khamorray would pick up on his feelings and might unconsciously
pass them along to Riyanne...from which they'd surely reach Eliase, and
tha was all she needed.
*How is Riyanne holding up?* he asked Khamorray, wondering if the
seadragon could provide any reassuring thoughts.
Khamorray opened his eyes. <Hey, how are you feeling?> he asked,
nudging her.
Ryianne looked at Khamorray before snuggling closer to the other sea
dragon. {Eliase is scared. She is having a hard time sleeping, and so
am I. Do you think your rider could do something to comfort her? That
might help her sleep.}
<I guess he is trying to do that,> Khamorray told her. <He's not real
good at things like that, you know. Um, what do you think would help?>
Ryianne thought for a moment. {Well maybe if they snuggle? I mean it
makes me feel better to be snuggling with you. So maybe it'll work for
them too.}
Khamorray passed that suggestion on somewhat dubiously, knowing that
his rider was not as accomplished a snuggler as he himself was. Ansel
was surprised to get that sort of advice from Khamorray, but it did
seem to fit. He put an arm around Eliase and drew her against him.
"It will be all right," he said to her again.
Eliase pressed to Ansel, trembling slightly. After a while her
trembling stopped. "Thank you," she whispered softly. Ansel nodded
and started to remove his arm, but Eliase held him close.
"Please stay," she whispered.
"Okay," he said, making no further move but keeping his arm where it
was, protectively around her. He hoped he was doing this right...he
was afraid that when it came to things like this, he was pretty inept.
"It's...it's okay now," he tried to reassure her. He only hoped he was
telling the truth.
Eliase relaxed against Ansel. She was exhausted, but afraid to go
back to sleep. She reached to pull the blanket up around herself and
rested her head against Ansel's chest. "Ansel," she said softly. "Did
you want to kiss me? Back on the beach?" She tilted her head slightly
to look up at his face.
Ansel blinked in surprise. "I...heh, I guess I did," he said with an
embarrassed smile. "After all that's gone on, it's hard to believe
that we were having so much fun just a few hours ago!" He wondered
when things could be that way again.
<Well, maybe now?> Khamorray asked. He looked at Ryianne. <What
does your rider think, does she want him to...?> he asked suggestively.
Ryianne snuggled closer to Khamorray. {I don't think she would have
brought it up if she didn't want him to. She is scared. I think she
is just looking for something to distract her, make her not so scared.}
Khamorray nodded. <We both think it would be a good idea,> he decided.
<It would make her feel better, and probably wouldn't hurt you too
much either.>
Ansel smiled at his dragon's typically weird choice of words. He
slowly moved his head down and nervously brushed his lips across hers.
Eliase smiled a bit as she felt his lips on hers. She snaked her
arms around Ansel and pressed her lips to his, her tongue tentatively
tasting him. She smiled again as she felt Ansel stiffen slightly. "You
are nervous," she whispered against his lips.
"Um...well...aren't you?" he asked in surprise, his words cut off as
her lips met his. His first instinct was to pull away, but he didn't.
He instead leaned into her a bit more.
Eliase let her kiss deepen some. She brushed away any thoughts of
Ansel being with another woman. In that moment the world was just her,
and him. Her arm tightened around him as she let the kiss go. She
leaned her head back a bit and looked up into Ansel's eyes. "How
many.....women have you been with?"
Ansel hardly knew how to answer that one. He'd wanted Bel to be his
mate, and had once asked her.but she'd been unsure of what to do,
probably because she was still technically mated to Ce'lot. He'd
comforted and supported her - much as he was doing tonight for Eliase -
but she hadn't been ready for complete intimacy. He knew she liked him
and cared about him, and of course Khamorray and Menia had gotten on
great together - but he wasn't sure exactly where he fit into her life.
Just as he wasn't sure where he fit with Eliase right now.
"Um.well.I.not really." he stammered, realizing only after he'd said
it that it didn't answer her question and didn't really even make a
whole lot of sense. He must be more exhausted than he'd thought. "I
guess I'm not.much of a warren-type," he said, thinking of the
landbound view of the stereotypical dragonrider, flitting from
relationship to relationship on almost a daily basis.
"So does that mean only one, or only three?" She smiled a bit trying
to lighten his nervousness. Ansel started to answer her, but Eliase
pressed a kiss to his lips before he could say anything else. "You
know what, I don't care," she whispered against his lips. "I guess the
most important question is do you want to be with me?"
"I...well...yes," Ansel said hesitantly. He and Eliase had literally
spent the Day From Hell together, been through a war, hopefully saved
some lives while watching others be lost...how could he *not* want to
be with her? He wanted to be with Bel, too, but he didn't know what
her situation was right now...other than the fact that Menia's being
asleep indicated she was safe within the warren. Eliase, on the other
hand, was right here and she clearly needed him. He was too tired to
sort out his scattered thoughts and feelings tonight. That would come
with the morning, and he gently put his arms around Eliase and drew her
to him, to protect her from the night's terrors.

Summary: Late Night, Day 1: After bringing the Kataani healers, Ansel
is unable to contact the sleeping Menia to let Bel know he is safe and,
with some hesitation, accepts Eliase's offer to stay at her apartment.
Knowing that Eliase is feeling shaken after all she's been through, he
stays the night to comfort her.

Subject: [DL-J] Peace Talks Aren't Always Peaceful!
Tanami
Late Night, Day 1
/snip from Arlene's post/
"I know one thing that the Kataani could help us with," Corwin
stated.
"The Kataani healers could teach our healers some of the techniques
they
used. I have been around the medical center all afternoon, and I have
witnessed injured riders who were brought in on the verge of death,
walking out of the medical center!"
Rellik nodded, "Yes, the Kataani healers have skills that humans may
not."
"And magic," Sarilyn stated softly, thinking of the battle they had
just fought.
"Yes, perhaps even some of that might be shared," Rellik again agreed.
"But what can we offer the Kataani in return.
Corwin smiled, "I already have an answer for that. Seadragons.
Tanami, correct me if I'm wrong, but you were telling me about the
dangers your people face living under the sea. Certainly a wing of
seadragons could help with many of those?"
/end snip/
Tanami nodded, thinking back on her days spent living at Neaopi, and
then later on her own as a virtual exile. "Yes, definitely. Just as
your towns and villages are troubled by wild dragons, so too are our
outlying settlements threatened by wild seadragons. They do not attack
large cities such as Neaopi, but nor can all of our people live in such
well protected places."
"Why is this?" Hsina asked from her bed.
"Because, as on land, food must be grown to sustain the large
cities," Rellik put in. "The great kelp farms cover hundreds of square
miles of sea floor, and must be tended daily. So must our fisheries
and herds of...well, our equivalent of your herdbeasts."
"I hope," said Sarilyn wryly, that you aren't using those cute
dolphins as herdbeasts."
"No, but the army does use them as scouts," said Rellik. "Has any of
you ever wondered why our people maintain such a large and well
equipped army?"
"The thought had crossed my mind," said Corwin. "Surely not just on
our account."
"An army exists to fight," Hsina observed. "If it is not kept
occupied, it will find things to keep itself occupied. Almost
certainly this would include placing its own leaders in power over the
civilian populace."
"And since the Emperor remains in power, it means the army must have
a purpose for its day-to-day existence," Sarilyn concluded.
"And so it does," Tanami agreed. "The army must protect not only the
sources of our food supply, but also the lines of supply that lead back
to our cities. Seadragons are but one of the menaces that they must
confront, and the reason they are so well-organized into units of
different sizes is that one never knows where a threat may suddenly
arise, and how many soldiers may be needed to confront it."
"Aye, just like Lord Grouty has ships of his own that patrol the
waters to make the pirates keep their heads down," Corwin agreed.
"Without them, the pirates would become so bad that it would be
impossible to have any seagoing trade."
"And without that trade, Cabral could not exist," said Rellik. "It is
the same for Neaopi and our other cities. As my niece just said,
seadragons are just one problem. There are many others, some even
worse."
"Like the kraken we fought to get through to where the Emperor was
imprisoned," said Tanami. "Even with four seadragons, we were
hard-pressed to hold our own, and in the end it was magic from Keersach
that turned the tide in our favor."
"The list of such enemies is long," Rellik agreed. "The Shadow
Stalkers are perhaps the worst."
Tanami shuddered. "When Kethriss and I lived on our own in the sea,
we were in constant fear of encountering them. It was only through
luck that we found our way here before that happened."
"What are those?" Corwin asked. "I've never heard of anything such
as that."
"We do not know," said Rellik, looking grim. "Few have ever seen
one...and those who have been found alive after encountering them are
reduced to mad ravings. They strike in the dark, silently, at isolated
outposts and farms. Even the army has learned to use great caution
when one of their attacks occurs."
"I have heard army officers say that it is useless to try and pursue
them into the dark depths," said Tanami. "If you send out a hundred
soldiers, they come back and report that they have seen nothing and
could find no trail to follow. If you send out ten men, they do not
come back at all."
Corwin cleared his throat. "This sounds like a bigger challenge than
I thought," he admitted. "I was thinking in terms of things like
chasing off marauding sharks and squid, or Kataani bandits. It looks
like our knowledge of what is out there in the deeps is...well, to coin
a phrase, we've just scratched the surface."
Rellik nodded. "Just so," he said. "Your wing is composed of mainly
young riders and dragons. I recommend that tonight, while I am
instructing young Sarilyn here on Kataani protocols, you speak with
Tanami and decide how much help your wing can provide."
(Tag Arlene - I assume this would take place after the current
meeting breaks up?)
"I foresee one additional problem," said Rellik. "It may just be the
imaginings of an old scholar...what we really need is a professional
soldier to comment on this." He looked back and forth from Hsina to
Corwin. "You two are the closest we have here right now, so I put this
question to you: If you offer the support of your wing and you DO
succeed in supplanting even some of the army's functions, how do you
believe the commanders would react to this?"
Corwin looked thoughtful. "I remember that when Tara formed our
Maritime Wing, there was grumbling from a few Alpha Wing riders that we
were cutting into their territory...and that despite the fact that
their dragons can only go out to a distance of several miles offshore,
whereas our seadragons can only come in about that far inland.
Everyone realized early on that we weren't really competing with each
other, though. We were doing separate duties, except when it involved
wraith attacks right along the shoreline."
"But my uncle brings up a good point," said Tanami. "Unless we place
our wing under command of the Kataani military - which I do not think
we can do - we will no doubt rouse some bad feelings among Imperial
officers and soldiers who feel they are being 'displaced,' whether this
is actually happening or not."
Rellik turned to Hsina. "Queenrider, I know it is your intention to
take part in the negotiations, but I must ask you to consider that a
soldier - when threatened - will instinctively strike at the weakest
point of his enemy. And you, my dear, are this warren's weakest
point."
Hsina's eyes went round as saucers and she moved her hand
instinctively to where her sword hilt would have been had it not been
taken off and placed in the corner of the room. "Explain yourself,
scholar," she said.
"I am not speaking of your fighting abilities, Queenrider," said
Rellik, holding his hands up placatingly. "I mean to say that if one
wishes to weaken an enemy, one destroys that which the enemy needs but
cannot replace. In the case of Jasra Warren, that is you. Without you
and your queen, the warren loses its ability to expand Corwin's
Maritime Wing, or even to replace losses. Finding the odd seadragon
egg on the shoreline simply cannot give the needed numbers.
Queenrider, I ask you to reflect on what will go through the minds of
certain Imperial army officers if Jasra Warren offers the aid of its
joined seadragons. Any who might be so minded to prevent this from
happening might...just might...look to eliminate that possibility by
eliminating the one person without whom the alliance could not become a
reality. I think, Queenrider, that in your own interests and that of
the warren, that you let Lecia preside over the talks to avoid making
yourself a possible target."
(Tag Andrew)
* * * * * *
Later, in Sarilyn's quarters
"And now, we must begin getting you ready," said Rellik. He handed
Sari a thick, dusty tome that he had hurriedly retrieved from his
quarters before Lunath had brought them here. "This is an etiquette
manual for the Kataani imperial court. It looks old, I know, but
nothing has changed in over a hundred years."
"There's quite a lot here," said Sarilyn, leafing through the book.
"And it's not even written in our language."
"I have a proposal to make," said Rellik. "It will probably cause
some ill-feelings at first, especially from the likes of Baron
Kiriisha...but it might work to our advantage. It occurs to me that
since we are not at the Imperial Court but rather at Jasra Warren, it
is incumbent upon the visiting delegation to learn the ways of their
hosts. If I know Emperor Toru, he has already thought of that.
However, Baron Kiriisha and the others probably have not and will not.
And I do not think the Emperor will tell them."
"Why not?" Sarilyn asked.
"Because he wants to test us," said Rellik. "See how formidable we
are - you notice how he refused to support Kiriisha's demands earlier?"
At Sarilyn's nod, he continued. "My recommendation is this - you
learn enough Imperial Court protocol to show that you are at least
somewhat knowledgeable in the ways of our people - but make it clear
that the negotiations will be carried out under local customs. This
will put them at an instant disadvantage, and will doubtless gain some
points with the Emperor."

Summary:
Late night, day 1: Tanami, Rellik, Corwin, Hsina, and Sarilyn hold a
"strategy" session in Hsina's room at the med center, where they talk
about the upcoming negotiations and potential problems that may arise
from them.
Later, Rellik goes to Sarilyn's quarters with her to begin
instructing her in Kataani protocol. He suggests to her that they put
the Kataani off balance by insisting that local customs take precedence
over the rigid Kataani rituals.

TIMELINE
Day 1:
Late Evening:
Corwin takes Hsina to the med center where Balagon patches up her
wounds. Balagon tells Hsina that she might lose the baby, but only
time will tell. While waiting for them to finish with Hsina, Corwin
learns about Tara's condition and that Raleon has been called to tend
to her (Only Time Will Tell)
Ansel meets Eliase outside the med center after being refused entry
by the guards. Realizing that the warren is in chaos because its
leaders are either injured, busy, or missing, they try to help restore
order by bringing in Kataani healers to help the overwhelmed med center
staff. They find General Nakamo, who writes an order for one of his
subordinate commanders to put his brigade's medical staff at the
warren's disposal. (Glimmers of Hope Amid the Ruins)
Ansel and Eliase board their dragons and go underwater, where they
present the General's written orders to Brigadier Mokkari. Mokkari is
cooperative, and summons the healers and their staffs, whom Khamorray
and Ryianne are able to deliver to the med center in two trips
(Glimmers of Hope Amid the Ruins).
After watching the Kataani healers welcomed into the med center,
Ansel and Eliase go across to the deserted dining hall, where they eat,
rest, and try to comfort one another. They remain together, neither of
them wanting to be alone on this night. (Glimmers of Hope Amid the
Ruins)
After bringing the Kataani healers, Ansel is unable to contact the
sleeping Menia to let Bel know he is safe and, with some hesitation,
accepts Eliase's offer to stay at her apartment. Knowing that Eliase
is feeling shaken after all she's been through, he stays the night to
comfort her.
Tanami confronts Emperor Toru and his retinue with a demand that they
sit down to work out a peace treaty to prevent misunderstandings from
breaking out into open warfare in the future. The Emperor cautiously
agrees, and Tanami asks Sarilyn to manage the negotiations due to her
experience with people of rank. Kethriss, meanwhile, contacts
Sadennetta and Syngnath to try and get Lecia and Corwin over to the
negotiations as well (Taking the First Step)
Sarilyn accepts Tanami's request to negotiate with the Kataani, but
asks for a bit of insight and a fast culture lesson before doing so
(Doing What She Was Born To Do)
Sarilyn and Tanami realize they need more help to tackle
negotiations with the Kataani, so they enlist the help of Tanami's
uncle Rellik. Rellik agrees to give them a crash course in Kataani
court protocol, but recommends that the negotiations be put off until
the next morning to give them more time to prepare. (Nervous About
Negotiations)
The Emperor talks with Baron Kiriisha while they await Tanami's
return (Safe Haven)
Sarilyn presents her request for a delay in the negotiations. The
Emperor, over Baron Kiriisha's objections, agrees because he respects
their forthrightness and also to give Princess Kiyomi a chance to join
them (Nervous About Negotiations/Safe Haven)
Corwin, having received word of the impending negotiations, begins
writing down ideas for peace terms while he waits at Hsina's bedside in
the med center (Dialogue)
Sarilyn, Tanami, and Rellik leave the conference room and head for
the med center to confer with Corwin (Nervous about Negotiations)
Hsina, unwilling to be left out of the planning for the next day's
negotiations, forces her way out of bed over Corwin's protests and is
walking out of the med center with Corwin as Sarilyn and the two
Kataani arrive (Settled Stomachs)
Tanami suggests that the discussions can take place in Hsina's med
center room, and she and Sarilyn help the Queenrider back inside.
Corwin and Rellik are asked to find chairs for them to use, and use the
opportunity to briefly discuss the situation. When they return, the
group begins to go over Corwin's ideas (Dialogue)
Corwin, Hsina, Tanami, Sarilyn, and Rellik gather in Hsina's room to
discuss strategy and possible complications regarding the upcoming
negotiations (Peace Talks Aren't Always Peaceful)
Rellik goes to Sarilyn's apartment to begin instructing her in
Kataani protocols, but suggests that they also insist that local
customs take precedence since the negotiations are being held at Jasra
(Peace Talks Aren't Always Peaceful)
Day 2
Predawn
In Cabral, a nameless tavern drudge tries to make plans to escape
from her brutal life (There Is A Tavern In The Town)
Dawn
Ce'lot wakes up on an island, where his dragon Britche reports he can
see nothing but water for miles around, and no signs of any of the
riders from his wing (Where Are You Anyway?)
Lecia talks to her dragon, who tries to comfort her tells her she is
not a failure (Where Are You Anyway?)
Kalewyn holds a vigil in Tara's room at the med center (Where Are You
Anyway?)
Karashi, a Kataani healer, is assigned to examine Tara and finds that
she is dying from Oga's magic, which poisoned her when he stabbed her
the night before. He tries to communicate his needs to Kalewyn, not
realizing that Kay can neither hear nor speak aloud. (Sounds In The
Silence)
Fig realizes that she has come too late for the battle, and asks Trap
for guidance. (Untimely Arrival)
Saul and Kiyomi remain imprisoned in a cave, where the princess tries
to seduce him (Pulling It Together)
Early Morning:
Kalewyn realizes, from the healer's attempts to communicate, that
Tara's maladay is caused by Oga's magic. Knowing that Kataani magic
loses is effectiveness away from the sea, he takes Tara out and has her
placed on a stretcher for Sabbith to carry. Sabbith picks up the
startled healer, and they take off for Haven with Varaenna following.
(Safe Haven)
Belarade, hearing from Menia that Ce'lot is alive but lost and
stranded, sends the dragon out to find him and Britche (Rescuing and
Comforting)
Milla finds Lecia, and tries her hand at comforting the distraught
queenrider (Rescuing and Comforting)
Fig and Kasha arrive at Jasra, where Jerram confronts Fig and makes
it clear that he does not believe her story of why she is at the warren
(Untimely Arrival)
Fig fills Jerram in on her reason for coming to Jasra, but asks that
he not divulge her secret to anyone (Truth or Fiction)
While waiting to hear word from the missing Saul and Fayloth,
Shawnee is approached by Corwin who requests that she takes over as
Wingleader until someone else can be appointed. She agrees, but on the
condition that it only be temporary (Dreams Answered)
Jerram and Fig head to the dining hall, but en route are approached
by Shawnee, who tells them that some riders are still missing,
including Saul (Truth or Fiction)
Ojean returns to his apartment to find that Cill has come to share it
permanently with him. (Taking the Next Step)
At the dining hall, Jerram sees that Tyler Grouty needs his help, and
sends Fig back to the apartment to wait for him. He has Seyd contact
Teewith to ask Ojean to secretly look out for her. (In the Name of the
Law)
Shawnee goes out to the beach to watch for Saul's return, but meets
Ojean and Cill instead (Dreams Answered)
Jerram invites Tyler out for a drink, away from the warren. They
mount their dragons and head for the Stuck Pig in Cabral (In the Name
of the Law)
Saul and Kiyomi return to Jasra, where Kiyomi is told that her father
the Emperor is awaiting her, and Saul is met by Shawnee
(Homecoming/Dreams Answered)
In the Stuck Pig Tavern, when the tavern owner takes the drudge by
force, she kills him and tries to make her escape, only to be surprised
by two strangers. (Unpleasantness in the Tavern)
Arriving outside the Stuck Pig, Jerram and Tyler see a girl drenched
in blood and a dead tavern-keeper, as well as a nasty crowd. Knowing
that the girl is apt to be killed without trial, they get her out and
take her to Jasra's med center. (In the Name of the Law)
Fig returns to the apartment, and sees her father-to-be, Kalewyn,
through the window, but resists the temptation to go out and talk to
him. She waits there for Jerram's return (When the Walls Crumble)
Late Morning
