Day 6
Afternoon
Outside Warrenlady's Apartment.

---
[SNIP]
"Mapmaker looks like he has seen spirit of underworld," (Andahar) said,
then grimaced as he remembered who the Nomad deity of the underworld
was, and what that name meant to Trevor. "Sorry."

Trevor shook his head. "No, don't be," he said. "I guess I do look a
fright. I feel like I just met Khazeen again."
[END SNIP]

Andahar stiffened, his eyes quickly scanning the area for danger,
seeing
nothing out of the ordinary, he gave Trevor a concerned look, "What has
happened here?"

Trevor shook his head. "I'm...not sure how to describe it," he said
uncertainly, then remembered Triss's last words. "Um.. if I tell
you...can you *not* tell Bohoc, at least for now?"

Andahar raised an eyebrow, "If I must. But why?"

"Because Trissana asked me not to," he said, sitting down on one of the
steps that led up to the queenrider's quarters. He put his head on his
hands, trying to organize his jumbled thoughts. "I went up to wish
Triss a 'happy hatching day,' like I do every year," he told Andahar.
"I
thought she was asleep, but then she woke up...and it was like talking
to an entirely different dragon. It was like...like talking to a
stranger I'd never met before. Either she's not herself right now, or
else...she *was* herself, just then, but it was a Triss that I'd never
known before." The latter seemed impossible, but at the same time felt
more like the truth.

"A stranger? Has her illness affected her mind?" Andahar asked with
concern.

Trevor quickly described her words to him. "She sounded
different...older, and...I don't know, somehow...sharper? More aware of
things? It's hard to describe. I thought maybe she had a fever...she
*is* really hot...but when I looked at her mind, I suddenly saw
something underneath what I'd always known...something that that sweet,
gentle personality of hers had been concealing. And then she said that
she 'wasn't what I wanted her to be,' or something along those lines.
But how could that be, how could a dragon put up a front like that for
her own rider, every day, year after year? And more
importantly...why?"

Andahar crossed his arms over his chest and snorted, "I have told
mapmaker that dragon is not hatchling many times. Perhaps she only
behaves as you treat her."

"She mentioned Bohoc, too," Trevor said quietly. "That's why I asked
you to keep this from him. She said it was it was 'what Bohoc
expected,' and he was the only male...well, she sort of drifted off
there and didn't finish. But then she asked me not to tell him, yet.
What could that mean? What would Bohoc have to do with it?"

Andahar relaxed his stance and approached Trevor, sinking down to sit
beside the mapmaker. "I do not know Trissana as well as you, but I do
know how Bohoc feels toward her. Perhaps she fears that if she shows
her
true self to him he will not wish to protect her? She does not need to
fear his loss of feeling for her."

"Her true self," said Trevor quietly, wondering just what that "true
self" might be like. "She *has* mentioned the fact that he spends a
fair amount of time with MoonDancer. She wasn't mad about it or
anything, but she seemed worried. Maybe she thinks that because you and
Alania are close, he'll gravitate toward MoonDancer unless she does
something to keep him? But that business about him being the 'only
male' bothers me. Dragons aren't supposed to have those kinds of
feelings, are they? I mean, attaching themselves to one other dragon to
the exclusion of others?"

"You grew up around dragon, not me, but I believe you are correct.
Dragon do not form such attachment. Bohoc spends time with MoonDancer
because I spend time with Alania, but I do know he... cares... for
Trissana." Andahar put a hand on Trevor's shoulder, "Just as I think
of you as family."

"Thanks," Trevor said softly. "I think of you that way, too, even
though I know I don't always show it. I know Cynthia does, too." He
smiled. "And we all think of Bohoc as family." He thought a moment,
and went on. "But the odd thing is...and I guess I really never thought
about it...was that I never see Triss with any other males besides
Bohoc. The only other dragon she seems to cuddle with besides Bohoc is
Syren, whom she regards as a mother-figure since Tymor left. Perhaps
she feels like she owes it to Bohoc to give him all of her attention?
But that's how a human would feel, not a dragon."

Andahar nodded, "I have seen many dragon cuddle with other dragon of
same or different sex, though Bohoc does seem to prefer to cuddle with
female dragon." Andahar smiled. "Perhaps Trissana might prefer other
females, because you do?"

"But that wouldn't explain her relationship with Bohoc, would it?"
Trevor asked. "I don't know that she's overly attracted to her own
gender... it's more like she avoids males other than Bohoc. That's
pretty peculiar, though, isn't it? I mean, why would she do that,
unless..." He looked up and met Andahar's eye. "My brother's dragon?"

Andahar's eyes reflected back the pain in Trevor's own. "He was not
your brother!" Andahar said with conviction and anger. "As you are
kind, he was evil. He does not deserve for you to name him such! And
dragon was just as evil. What dragon taking name of Rashevon did to
Trissana and Vonn was not natural! But Vonn had known other male
dragon... whereas Triss had not. I think I understand why only male she
trust is Bohoc."

Trevor looked down at the ground. "It was right in front of me all
along, and I didn't see it," he said sadly. "At least, the part about
why she only seems to like Bohoc. I guess I haven't been a very good
rider." He stood and looked up toward the darkened entrance, knowing
that there was nothing more to be done right now. "What would you do,
if Bohoc had a problem like that?" he asked, hoping that Andahar might
have a suggestion that might help.

Andahar rose and glanced toward the ledge where Trissana lay. He put a
hand on Trevor's shoulder in support, "You are good rider, and only
rider Trissana would wish to have. I do not know about Bohoc having
problem, but I do know about trust after... pain." Andahar's eyes held
a darkness and a deep pain as he allowed memories of his own past to
surface. "I also did not wish to go with other after... and did not
wish to trust. Bohoc did this for me when he won mating flight and
showed me that there does not have to be pain. Maybe you can do this
for Trissana. Maybe Trissana is afraid of being hurt again, but perhaps
Trissana holds back in going with other males because of her feelings
for you, and your feelings about males. If you were Nomad, I would tell
you to find others to share mat with; to learn to trust others."

Trevor sighed. "If I'd been born a Nomad, I wouldn't be in this mess,
would I?" He gave Andahar a wry smile.

"No?" Andahar looked at Trevor soberly. "You have older brother who
took you without your... desire. Maybe that does not happen often with
Dragonrider. But if you were Nomad and taken from clan, you might have
had men of whole enemy tribe take you." His amber eyes smoldered with
a
deep anger that he rarely let show. It vanished almost before Trevor
could be sure he saw it. "Like Alania... what do I do, Trevor? She
left Cleft because of me... she did not trust my love for her! It is my
fault that she was out there and taken by *pu-tagh*. How can I help
her?"

Trevor bit his lip, unsure of how to answer such a question. Finally,
he
spoke. "Maybe do like Cynthia did for me," he suggested. "Just let
her
know that you are here for her...but if she pushes you away, don't push
right back. But keep telling her you love her and how much she means
to
you. And get Bohoc to reinforce that with MoonDancer. Perhaps, in
time, that will make her believe you are sincere and aren't to blame."

Andahar nodded, "I will do that... for as long as it takes... for her
to
trust again."

Summary
Day 6
Afternoon

Bohoc returns to cuddle with Trissana, who is still ill, and drops off
his rider, Andahar, outside the ledge, where he finds Trevor. Trevor
appears to be upset and Andahar stops to talk to him. They talk about
Trevor's discovery that Trissana may have been putting on a persona
over
her "real self" in order to appear a certain way to both Trevor and
Bohoc. They hypothesize as to the reasons behind her putting on this
act and Andahar suggests that is her love for Trevor which is the
reason
behind it. They talk about their past abuses, which leads Andahar to
tell Trevor about his concern for Alaina.
