Subject: [DL-N] Dreams on fire!

Day 11/12 Midnightish

It had been a long day and sleep had not come easy for Breezy. Dargis's
funeral had been beautiful in an ethereal sort of way. The dragons had
surprised everyone by their spectacular display, but then D'lion and
his rider had been loved by all. She'd never realized how many lives
the simple man and his gentle dragon had actually touched until today.

There had been so much death over the last year, but then death was
part of life, lately though it seemed as if nature was a bit out of
balance on the death part. Maybe the doomsayers weren't so far off when
they started whispering about the infamous Norwall curse. Of course she
didn't believe in such things, but considering the way things had been
going though, it never hurt to keep an open mind.

Then there was the issue of Sara and one irate Mother, and idiot
father. Sue should be glad that busting Justin's nose was all she'd
done. What are a few broken teeth in comparison to a daughter's life.
Of course people all have their priorities. Sadly, Justin's and Sue's
were more on the warped side. Maybe if Justin was more of a
contributing member of warren society it would be different. But he
wasn't, in fact the stablemaster had, had more then his share of
trouble with Justin, and it stemmed mostly from his drinking. Showing
up late for his shift, showing up drunk and then not showing up at all.
Justin's crappy attitude towards women didn't help either. She wanted
so badly to just slap the snot out of Sue for being so stupid.

How it was that a woman could express love for a man that abused her
and her child was beyond comprehension. Losing one's temper was one
thing, we are all human with the frailties to go with it, but being
repeatedly abusive or abused was an entirely different matter all
together. Her thoughts drifted to Amy and Link. Amy was a good mother,
not only to David but also to Dizzi, and Breezy didn't doubt for a
second that Link would lose his manhood in a heartbeat if he even
thought about hurting the little ones. Felicia had been the same with
her growing up, like a Mama bear protecting her cub. A little sigh
escaped into the pillow, how could Sue allow Justin to even touch Sara
and still call herself a Mother?

Letting a little yawn escape Breezy nestled deeper into the warmth of
Galen's arms. His soft rhythmic snores altered for a moment before his
arms tightened around her, the movement suddenly making her feel safe
and protected. The heat of his body brought on another yawn and her
eyes closed. Suddenly the sound of gentle cooing filled her head and
one eye popped open. It was Coo, and the sound was one that was
uniquely hers. Breezy had never seen another dragon that could do it,
at least so that it sounded 'real.' Coo, cooed when she was happy, or
sad, or hunting. Since it was the middle of the night Breezy figured
the iridescent female was singing to her little one, probably
comforting Purity over the death of a fellow dragon. It had a lulling
affect and she yawned again to tired to ask for sure.

Her dreams were of fire and a beautiful flower, then there was blood,
lots of it. The horribly wrenching sounds of bones cracking, brought
the little redhead upright in the bed. "*WOULD YOU STOP THAT!*" Breezy
thought and yelled aloud. "*Are you eating again? What the hell are you
eating at this time of night?*" She demanded, the sound of her voice
causing Galen to stir enough to roll over.

[Ow!] came the burped reply.

*Ow! What's an ....oh nevermind, an Owl! Well. just stop it! And I told
you before. DON"T eat when I'm sleeping!*

A contented sigh came from the sea-green dragon, [It was hunting and so
was I! It's not my fault it got in my way!]

*Well your methods of hunting leave a lot to be desired!* Breezy
groaned in disgust plopping back down on the now cold pillow. Punching
it a few times in irritation she rolled over and wrapped herself around
the trainer in spoonlike fashion. The heat from his body brought
another yawn, *Well just stop it! I need some sleep! Go to bed! And
quit smackin' your lips!* She added irritably fidgeting a bit to create
another cocoon. Finally getting comfortable Breezy rested her cheek on
Galen's back, letting out a small comfortable sigh she drifted off
immediately.

[..] a short while later

Floating in her dreams, the image of the creature from the cave
suddenly flashed in her mind and Breezy's eyes popped open. *Sigh* She
was never going to get any sleep at this rate. Galen muttered under his
breath at her wiggling and rolled back over draping his leg over her
then pulled her close and suddenly tensing. "Cold butt!" He mumbled
sleepily. Breezy grinned in the darkness snuggling even closer.

But, she was awake now and laid there going over things in her mind.
Somewhere in her thoughts she fell asleep only to find herself back in
the cavern. The strange creature stood propped up directly in front of
her as she and Jocko had left it. What was it? Jocko? Where did Jocko
go? He would...the dark eye sockets of the mummified remains sparked to
life. Her breath caught in her throat, and Breezy reached for her knife
as it lunged out at her with a roar so deafening it shook the bed.
Jumping backward she almost shoved Galen off the bed.

"What was that?" He yelled, with one hand on the floor and the only
thing keeping him from hitting the floor. A loud whooshing sound and
inhuman screams echoed in the small apartment.

<Snip>

She was out of bed and dragging on a robe even as she ran for the
entrance to her apartment. Galen was right behind her, and both stopped
in shock as they reached the outside ledge. Half the roof of the
medical center and a large portion of the crater wall above it had
blown off and was falling from the sky in a rain of rubble and burning
bits of debris. Flames four stories high were roaring through the
remains of the structure, burning everything down to the stone walls,
including the wooden support beams that held up the ceiling. A single
woman in a flaming nurse's uniform ran through the blasted open hole
that had once been the main doorway, her body blackening, her hair an
orange inferno and her screams filling the air. Amelia fell to the
ground, still burning.

<End>

"Jeezus!> They exclaimed in unison as flaming debris hit the ground in
front of them. Running back in the apt, in seconds they ran back out
with pants on and pulling on their shirts and boots as they went.

Shouting orders to the people as they appeared, the two went separate
directions with Galen heading off to help protect the coal, and Breezy
to the Med Center. Thankfully it had two entrances and a bucket brigade
was already forming from the Hot Springs to the rear entrance, as it
was not yet engulfed in flames. It was rather ironic in a way, throwing
hot water on a fire.

Even though he was worse for wear, somehow M'lent had survived the
blast and had managed to pull Nash out the back entrance. He was
staggering under the weight of the older man when Breezy tackled him to
the ground beating on his back. Nash let out a grunt of pain as the
bigger man landed on top of him.

"ROLL M'LENT! ROLL! YOU'RE ON FIRE!" Breezy screamed pushing and
shoving the searcher the best she could. Even though it seemed like an
eternity it was only a matter of seconds before the flame on his back
was thankfully snuffed out. M'lent cried out in pain as she pulled him
to a sitting position the material from his shirt having melted into
his skin.

"What happened?" He asked with a dazed expression, the smell of burnt
hair, flesh and material clinging to him.

"I don't know for sure, but where's Jale? What about the others"

"I..I .."

"Dammit M'lent, he sleeps at his desk most of the time!"

"I.I."

His dazed expression told her he was in shock. Checking him over she
found his back had some pretty nasty burns and half his hair was singed
off but he would live. More explosions shook the warren and Breezy
stumbled as she hurried to Nash. He had some cuts and was singed and
smoking a little, but okay for the most part. It was obvious that the
Searcher had taken the brunt of the fire. Seeing Gretchen and Heidi
through the smoke she started yelling for them coughing at the acrid
vapors filling the air.

The sister's, finally seeing the redhead waving hurried over. "Take
care of them!" She commanded before sprinting off. "Get those buckets
on that doorway! Get me some wet blankets!" The redhead yelled mentally
taking a head count of who was housed in the warren. Grabbing one of
the night guards as he ran past, "Have you seen anyone else come out?"
The man silently looked at the fiery inferno that was once the med
center and grimly shook his head.

"Damn!" She exclaimed. The fire would race through the wards but those
in the single rooms and the office would at least have some kind of a
chance. Tortured screams of anguish came from the heated orange haze.
"FASTER! WE NEED MORE BUCKETS!" She yelled eyeing the door. The fire
was growing hotter and they would be cut off in minutes. If they were
going to do anything it had to be now. "GET ME BLANKETS NOW!" The Sr.
Wingleader commanded over the din.

One of the guards appeared at her side, handing her a dripping
coverlet. The guard gazed down at her with a tight expression, "I'm
with you!"

"Get more water on that door!" Breezy yelled again. Then nodding to the
guard they pulled the blankets over their heads and started for the
opening. A loud yelp erupted from the redhead as she was roughly jerked
back.

"Have you lost your mind?" K'tarr yelled, pulling her away and
motioning the guard back.

"K'tarr!! There are people in there! Jale is in there! We've got to try
and ...."

"It's too late!"

A strange hissing came from the flames, the sound growing louder and
louder until a huge fireball shot out of the doorway. Breezy gasped and
jumped back, tripping on some debris she landed on her backside gaping
in shock at where she and the guard would have been if the Alpha
Wingleader hadn't stopped them.

"Backdraft." The tattooed rider said helping her to her feet. They
stared at the building in solemn silence as the screaming from within
died away. Names and faces all came to mind as Breezy bit her bottom
lip. Then a new, but all too familiar sound, that of the dragons
mourning the loss of their riders. Looking around at the fires that had
appeared, Breezy's throat seized up and she wasn't sure if it was from
the smoke, or because she wanted to cry.

With soot covered faces the bucket brigade continued tirelessly even
knowing that their efforts were fruitless at this point. Grabbing a
full bucket from the line K'tarr dumped it over Breezy's head she
jumped, gasped and let out a curse in surprise. He then did the same to
himself. "Not much protection but it will help for a little bit! C'mon,
we've got work to do!"

[..] across the warren

The two men met each other at the base of Jeneve's steps. The Lord's
stared at each in surprise as they saw each other through the smoky
haze. The offices were burning and if the brigades couldn't get some
control it would soon be at the Warrenlady's quarters. "I'll take care
of her, you help your warren!" Tallon shouted to Dev. "My men are at
your disposal!"

The male queenrider nodded. "Keep her safe!" He answered, still a
little hesitant to leave without knowing if Jeneve was okay.

There was no answer to his call as he burst through her door, nor was
there any of the usual barking from Fang. A stab of fear rang through
Tallon as he quickly looked through the apartment to find it completely
empty. Where were they? Could Jeneve have gone back to the office for
some reason, taking the animals with her? He'd only left her a few
hours ago.

Running to the door he saw Wellington still nearby talking to his
soldiers. Cupping his hands around his mouth he yelled as loud as he
could. "SHE"S NOT HERE!"

Dev heard the call and spun around as Tallon sprinted downwards toward
him taking the short staircase several steps at a time. "The animals
are gone too!" he exclaimed when he got closer.

Contrary to his normally quiet manner the Jr. Queenrider immediately
began shouting orders to Tallon's soldiers. Find the warrenlady at all
cost.

Shouts of disaster were heard as the men canvassed the warren. The
Med-Center was gone, the offices were on fire, and part of the jail had
collapsed as the death toll began to rise even higher.
