Subject: [DL-D]An Ending in Fire and Deceit
(Dawn of Day 1)
S'than was riding the skies near Triylar and enjoying the warmth of
S'laze
as he leaned down close to her flaming red scales. S'laze was one of
the
smallest grown dragons in Daere warren but what she lost in size she
made up
for in speed and agility. Off to the side was the beautiful Evadne
riding
the dark magenta dragon; Radella.
The morning seemed very pleasant as the early morning sun begin to make
its
appearance painting the low clouds with soft red and orange colors
giving
the sky a fiery look to it. Out of the corner of S'than's eye he
spotted
something odd.
*I see it too* S'laze answered the unspoken question and banked toward
the
town. *That dark shape is a one of the shadow spawn, but worse my sweet
the
city is beset be wraiths*
**Wraiths!** S'than replied verbally as well as mentally.
*Yep, Radella and her rider are aware of them as well* S'laze once
again
answered his unspoken question.
**You really need to let me formulate my thoughts sometimes** S'than
complained.
*Yes my sweet, but now would not be a good time. I've sent an alarm to
the
warren but it seems they are having a bit of trouble of there own. The
eggs
are hatching and it seems there are some Shadow spawn there as well*
S'laze
replied as they glided closer to the city.
**The Warren is under Attack!** Being rather startled
*No they have it under control from the sounds of it, they are sending
help
but it will be a moment for them to arrive.* S'laze's thoughts dropped
off
as a large fountain of fire shoot up from the city.
**What the..** S'than began.
*Seems some humans in green have some sort of.. Here I send you a
picture*
S'laze answered.
In his S'than's mind he saw an image of large tube like constructs
spurting
flame. As other humans worked what look like a blacksmith bellows. Jets
of
fire would burst forth destroying wraiths but for everyone one
destroyed
there were three more to take its place. *We have to help them S'laze*
But
as he formulated the thought several black clouds burst from the city.
S'than swallowed hard for there were some thirty shapes flying over the
city
now with more coming up to join them.
Not all the Wyverns made it over the city though some were consumed by
the
wraiths which only fuelled their hunger as the gray clouds floated up
toward
the dark shadow spawn. Some of the Wyverns took sport in seeing who
was
braver by getting as close to the wraiths as possible this sport turned
a
bit costly for a few of the shadow spawn who soon found themselves
being
consumed by the hungry wraiths.
**We should get out of here before they see us** S'than started.
*To late my sweet they know we are here but for whatever reason they
have
not chosen to attack us* S'laze answered.
**How do you know** S'than asked.
*I can sense it, somehow don't know that I can explain it so you
understand
my sweet* S'laze answered.
S'than's attention was more on the city now that they were close enough
for
his human eyes. He could make out what was happening. Most of the
people
were doing well at hiding in their homes counting on the stone walls to
protect them. Yet, not all were as safe as they believed for the people
of
Triylar had grown use to having the protection of the dragons and had
grown
a bit lazy in making their homes wraith proof. In some homes it was
like a
death trap as the wraiths found the gaps in the home and the humans
trapped
in their own homes were consumed.
The sight of what he was seeing nearly made S'than's stomach queasy
with
sickness. From the look of Evadne and her paling skin she was having
some of
the same problems. It was maddening to watch and not be able to help.
S'than gripped his sword as though the presence of the blade which lay
useless at his side could some how give him the nerve to fight
impossible
odds.
*They are coming, my sweet* S'laze cautioned and tried to sooth her
rider.
**Who is coming? I thought you said the warren was under attack?**
S'laze
asked his anxiety rising. Daere was his home and the people he cared
for
were there well all but one she had gone to help at cleft. Akety was
like a
young sister who with her quick smile and laughter seemed to be able to
cheer a brooding bard.
*Starfire, and most of the Beta squad are on the way* S'laze answered
smoothly.
S'than grunted, "Jason? Well I guess if you are about to fight demons
having
one on your side isn't all bad."
Several flashes herald the arrival of the beta squad and appearing
close to
S'than was the Sapphire dragon Starfire and his rider Jason the leader
of
beta. S'than didn't have any telepathy but knew that the dragons were
passing information back and forth.
*Starfire says Jason wants us to keep watch in case those wyverns
decide
they would like to fight* S'laze sent him, but by the heat in her mind
voice
she wasn't happy with the arrangement.
**Fine, he is the wing leader but we will be ready if needed** S'than
answered.
*Radella says he is full of shit, or rather that is Evadne's belief*
S'laze
added.
**I think they are both correct** he answered as he watched Beta form
into a
V wing with Jason at the lead. It was interesting watching the Beta
leader
his tactics were different from T'rell's who was more a commanding
general
sending in riders were he needed. While Jason lead his riders into the
battle.
The fire canons below seemed to help the city defenses but there were
just
not enough of them and they seemed only to try and save the main
capital
building. Beta begin burning away the wraiths as the shadowy forms of
the
Wyverns creped close as though torn between fighting and letting the
dragons
do what they needed. It was a difficult fight however because wraiths
seemed
to have the cover of the buildings and the dragons had to check their
fire
or burn the citizens of the city.
More Wyverns darted up from beneath the city as though the wraiths were
being driven underground causing the dark creatures to find a new place
to
rest or be consumed by the wraiths. To avoid crashing into the shadow
spawn
the beta squad had to break up into three groups.
*Damn, Starfire isn't evening listening all he cares about is the
kills*
S'laze shouted in frustration in S'than's mind.
**It is a difficult..** he started.
*I know that, but those damn wyverns are going to get them killed.
There
are large holes down there with rooms of where Wyverns were staying.
Tela
says she thinks she saw eggs as she flew over one hole.* S'than blocked
her
out of his head a moment. He couldn't block the emotions but the words
were
another matter.
Eggs, wyvern eggs, oh god he thought, all the battles all the deaths
all
those lost and it was not yet over. Horrified S'than could do nothing
but
watch. Several dragons filed off, their wings singed from getting to
close
to a wraith. The Wyverns however begin to herd the hurt dragons back
toward
the wraiths.
*I knew it they were only allowing us in to do what they couldn't do*
S'laze
echoed his thoughts.
**S'laze can you send me the images from the dragons what they are
seeing in
the city** S'than asked.
*Yep, but brace yourself* S'laze warned.
Even with the warning the onslaught of images was almost overwhelming.
He
saw opened holes in the floor where wraiths were consuming wyverns or
being
fought off by fire canons. Slimy looking eggs scattered about many
crushed
from the falling debris as wyverns dug there way out of holes to get
away
from the wraiths. But surprisingly there were humans among them. At
first he
thought it was because they had fallen there but soon realized they
were
working there trying to help protect the eggs with fire canons and
falling
rocks. The city had become a hive for the Wyverns and the people were
helping.
**Oh god this can't be happening** S'than cried.
*Snap out of it Romeo we have trouble* S'laze snapped.
Looking around he noticed several wyverns were flanking them and trying
to
force them into the battle. Already four dragons had been overwhelmed
by
wraiths because they had lost there agility to out fly them along with
the
wyverns not letting them leave.
**Quick send to Starfire and Jason what's happening** he sent to S'laze
as
he collected his thoughts.
*Done already but it is time for us to fly Radella has your wing so
hang on*
S'laze darted down wards to pick up speed as the Wyverns followed. As
they
neared the city it was pure chaos the dragons were fighting wraith,
wyvern,
and humans. Starfire and Jason's eyes burned with an almost red glow
as
they fought, ripping wyvern flesh and burning gray forms. The acid
blood of
the wyverns was burning holes in the stone paved streets.
The fire canons S'than thought. **We must get one of the canons and
bring
it back to the warren to study. **
*I don't think I can, but Radella might. Problem is they are chained
down
someone needs to undo that chain.* she answered.
**You get me close to one and I'll take off the chain** S'than didn't
need
to tell her how he was going to do it she could already read it in his
mind.
*Alright but you be careful, I'll relay what we are doing to the
others* her
mind voice sounded a bit nervous.
S'than and S'laze had practiced this maneuver many times thinking it
might
come in handy. Yet, given the events it was still nerve racking as they
dove
down dodging and wyverns and burning wraiths. S'laze's fire wasn't as
large
as some dragons do to her smaller form but she made up for it by being
more
accurate. It didn't take them long to find a canon that had been
abandoned
and they made there way toward it. With a blazing fire S'laze and
Radella
burned a clearing around the canon.
With the area clear S'than undid the harness holding him to the dragon
and
slide down S'laze's wind to the ground near the canon. From the looks
of it
the canon wasn't able to fiend off all the wyverns, but he had seen it
in
action and knew it was a vast improvement over a torch and with
T'rell's
fire lance in the works perhaps they could put it to greater use.
Getting the chains clear was easy work; someone had designed a release
clasp. The workmanship looked familiar somehow, but he didn't have
time to
think on it. Shouting brought his attention around.
"Look there, the dragon riders are stealing the city defenses they want
us
to die." Some screamed.
"Kill the dragon rider," another yelled.
S'than looked around wondering if he missed something then realized
they
were talking about him. Two burley men in green outfits rushed him
with
staffs whirling. He slipped his sword out batting away the staffs for a
moment.
"Don' t you all have enough problems I don't want to hurt you just need
to
borrow this fire canon for a short bit," S'than tried to reason with
them as
he ducked under one blow and leaped up from the other trying to sweep
out
his feet from under him.
"Don't listen to his lies, the dragons and there riders are evil and
they
would have us enslaved or worse" the voice yelled back with almost a
snicker. The slight glance S'than got was a man with a patch over one
eye.
His right arm went numb as one of the staffs found a home on his right
arm.
The pain shot through his body. With a vicious growl S'than knew his
only
hope was to drop these fellas but it pained him to do so. A swordsman
was
at a disadvantage to someone who knew how to wield a staff and these
two had
practice. In S'than's training however, they always talked about how
the
populace could revolt and they were not likely to come with sword but
with
staff pitchfork and the like.
S'than came like a leaf in the wind slipping in close and delivering a
blow
of his hilt to one mans temple that dropped him to the floor. This put
S'than behind the other staff wielder where again he brought the hilt
down
on the back of the head this time dropping the other. He could have
easily
slain both of them but at the last moment decided this would be better.
A deafening roar caught his attention, *Get on my sweet fool or did you
wish
to fight the whole city* S'laze asked not hiding the anger which was
not
exactly directed at S'than.
Radella's talons clutched the canon and were moving up ward as S'than
grabbed the saddle and pulled himself in. S'laze stretched her red
wings
wide buffering the crowd of men with who now were bringing up
crossbows.
"Thunk, thunk, thunk, and several arrows bounced off her scales but a
couple
pierced the membrane of her wings making it more difficult to fly. The
pain
cascaded into the pain S'than already had with his arm. Getting into
the
saddle took a lot more work with do to his right one not working
correctly.
*I won't be able to.* S'laze started as several of the beta squad
streaked
the area with fire.
Men in green holding cross bows went up in a blaze of fire. S'than
gulped
hard at the stench of burning flesh. But it was enough to get them
clear. As
they flew away any Wyverns in their path were quickly dealt with but it
had
cost the beta wing.
It became clear to S'than that Triylar would be no more. The city of
his
birth and everything he knew was at an end. The survival of Daere now
would
be to help those people that had left to rebuild.

Day 2 Afternoon The Beach
<snip>
He hurried Nyna and her small dragon aboard Khamorray, as they watched
Eliase and Ryianne take off. Khamorray cleared the ground just as a
confused-looking Kataani sergeant was hurrying in their direction.
Khamorray did a tight spiral to gain altitude, then flew top-cover for
Ryianne as she swooped down to pluck the besieged soldier from his ring
of attackers.
<end snip>
The soldiers were not really expecting the dragons to take their young
comrade, so there was not much retaliation from them as Ryianne plucked
Shomashi from them. The young sea dragon circled higher with the
flailing Kataani in her grasp, trying not to clutch him too hard.
{Can you try to tell him to stop squirming} Ryianne asked Eliase as
they headed out and away from the scene. {I am having a hard time
holding onto him!}
Eliase slid to the side and looked down at the young man. He did seem
to be moving around a lot. "Be still," she cried out to him.
Shomashi cried out in horror as he felt the talons encircle him. He
struggled to release his pike which was trapped against his side by the
dragon's claw, and his only thoughts were of freeing himself from what
he was sure would be a terrible death. He thought he heard the sound
of a human woman's voice, but the wind whipped it away before he could
be sure what she had called out. Had she also been taken by the beast?
Did she think he could help her? He had to try!
He squirmed all the harder, trying to free the pike from where it was
trapped against his body. He managed to exhale all of his breath and
give himself a little more room, sliding the pike up along his body,
and finally out, but for a terrifying moment he almost dropped it.
Eliase frowned as the Kataani didn't seem to hear or understand her. {I
can't seem to get him to stop. We just need to get down to the beach
as quick as we can love}
Ryianne swung wide over the ocean and headed back for the beach not far
from the edge of the Warren.
Shomashi balanced the pike carefully in his hand and took aim at the
underside of the beast. He thought of throwing the weapon, and then
realized that if he happened to miss he'd have nothing else to attack
with. So changing his tactic, he decided to try and poke at the joints
of the dragon's leg and see if he couldn't get it to open up its claws.
He poked and was rewarded by a huge twitch, so he poked again, and then
again. He tried jabbing in different places, though was annoyed to
find that his efforts seemed to mostly bounce off of the tough dragon
scales.
{I am not going to be able to hold him for much...OUCH!} Ryianne
almost lost hold of the young Kataani and Eliase leaned over to call
out to him again, not as worried for her dragon as she was for the
young man.
"Please stop moving around!"
Her voice only seemed to make the boy thrash all the harder and
suddenly Eliase gasped as she felt white hot pain. Ryianne lost her
grip of the Kataani as his pike slid under her scales and ripped along
her tender flesh.
{Are you ok Ryi?} Eliase called as she watches the young Kataani tumble
through the air and fall into the water.
{He cut me! It HURTS} Eliase winced and then pointed to the beach.
{Land there and I will swim out and get him}
Shomashi let out a triumphant cry as he felt the talons suddenly
release, but that quickly turned into a frantic yell as he felt nothing
by air beneath him as he plummeted downward.
As his newly joined rider began to fall, Sazerac let out a terrified
screech accompanied by a horrified mental cry of anguish.
Eliase ignored the grumbling of her dragon's ideas of letting the
Kataani sink to the bottom of the sea and quickly slid down as Ryianne
landed. She inspected Ryianne to make sure the blood was not flowing
too freely and then she dove into the ocean.
{Tell Khammoray what's happened}
The small green hatchling jumped up and down on the beach squeaking in
distress, <*You dropped him! You dropped my rider! Why did you drop
him? Go find him now!*>
His orange eyes kept darting from the larger seadragon toward the
ocean. <*Your rider cannot swim to him. He's down deep. He's
underwater. She's a lander! She'll drown! You go get him. Go get him
now!*> Sazerac cried.
Eliase swam out to the point at which she thought she'd seen the
Kataani fall into the ocean. She took a deep breath and plunged into
the churning waters. Swimming down as hard as she could she quickly
came to the sea floor. Frantically she began to search for the young
man. Her efforts seemed in vain tho and she pushed back to the surface.
Taking another quick breath she dove down again.
It was as if by a miracle that she spotted him in the crook of a rock
cropping. Eliase was beginning to tire and she wondered if she'd make
it back to shore with him. She wrapped her arm around his waist and
hauled him to the surface.
{I have got him, but he is unconscious} Eliase sent to Ryianne. Ryianne
in turn tried to calm the hatchling seadragon down from his hysteria.
It seemed like hours but in truth it was not nearly so long before
Eliase was tugging Shomashi onto the sand. She coughed up a bit of sea
water then quickly went to examine the young man. He didn't seem to be
breathing. Frustrated Eliase placed her hands on his shoulders and
began to shake him.
"Come on, wake up."
Startled green eyes snapped open, and his hand reached for a dagger.
But his sheath was empty. He pushed away from Eliase and stared
around. Seeing the large dragon looming over them, his heart sank. "I
am your prisoner."
Sazerac came bounding up from beneath Ryianne and bowled Shomashi over.
<*You're alive! You're alive! You're alive!*>
Shomashi stared at the small green dragon and suddenly recalled what
had happened on the beach and the other Kataani soldiers attempting to
kill the small dragon, <As are you!>
Sazerac turned to Ryianne and told her, too, <*He's alive, and I'm
alive!*>
Eliase sank back onto the sand taking deep breaths. There was a
pounding pain coming from her shoulder that she was having a hard time
ignoring. She glanced over at the young Kataani through strands of wet
hair. "You are not my prisoner." With a wince she pushed herself to
her feet. "But you are a newly bonded dragon rider." She attempted a
small smile and then suddenly sank down to her knees.
{Love please tell Khamorray that I need his rider, and soon. I think
we both need healers.}
Ryianne grudgingly agreed and sent a message off to Khamorray.

Hey folks, this is Josh. Sorry I have not posted in a couple of
weeks, life got real busy with school and work and I get home after
all that around 10 PM, enough time to watch a show, take a shower and
get to bed. Things should slow down in a bit, so I should be able to
jump back in.
