When is a Cold Not a Cold?.. When it's Attempted Murder...
(Part Three)
>Blanchie I told you to take us home,< Lenna commented when the dragon
veered from the path that would take then back to their home and
Lenna's
much needed bed and instead sent them on the path towards the med
center.
>>Abbie wants us to land by the healer's hall to speak with her before we
go home,<< Blanchie told her rider. >>She sounds worried about
something... maybe she found out what is wrong with Triss.<<
>We can hope it's good news then my love,< Lenna patted her dragons side
as she remembered something she had forgotten in her tiredness.
Triss's blood test...
When they arrived and landed, Lenna found out from the duty nurse where
Abby was and went to meet her. Calling out the healer's name when she
arrived in the room, Lenna knew right away something was wrong with one
look at her friends face.
"What is it?" She was almost afraid to ask. "You found.. something I
missed. Didn't you?"
The Dragonrider... Journeywoman Dragonhealer suddenly felt unsure of
herself. Had she missed something. Something vital to Triss's recovery?
She had been so sure Triss only had a cold. What if in her cockiness
she
had missed something more serious?
"Tell me Abby.. Did I miss something more?" Lenna's voice quivered with
uncertainty.
"You tell me," Abby countered in her Healer voice. "When did you do the
first blood test on Triss?"
"Two days ago when Trevor first called me in when she came up sick,"
the
Cleft rider replied, and wished Abby would get to the point, but she
knew
the Healer would in her own time. Instead she went over all the things
she
had done, then told her the results of the blood test. She also told
her
about the herbs she had fixed up to help make it easier for the pearly
white dragon to breath.
"She was getting better," Lenna told her. "She hated the stuff but said
it
was helping.. Blanchie said her breathing was easier yesterday morning.
I
was going to tell Trevor he could take her out for a short flight today
if
her lungs sounded clear today. But I didn't see him to tell him."
"It's a good thing you didn't," Abby exclaimed with a sigh and motioned
for Lenna to come around the table to where a microscope was set up on
a
work table. "When you did the first blood test, did it look anything
like
this one?"
"Abby you did find something," the blonde frowned. "What is it?"
"Humor me and have a look," was all she would say until Lenna complied.
Lenna, her beautiful face alight with concern, moved to stand in front
of
the scope. When she hesitated, Abby nodded for her to go on.
"What in the hell are those things!!" the cleft Journeywoman dragon
healer
exclaimed as she stood there and forced herself to watch the tiny bug
like
things swimming around in the blood sample. Something else she noticed
was
the discoloration of the dragons blood. IT looked
totally wrong. "Are you sure this is Triss's blood?"
"I'm sure," Abby quipped. "So I take it by your reaction this sample
doesn't look anything like the one you took."
"No," Lenna shuttered and turned back to face her friend. "The sample I
took didn't have any little swimmer, two legged or otherwise... What
are
they? And can you explain to me how her blood could change color like
that?"
Abby shifted to a more comfortable position, leaning her hip against
the
table before she spoke. "What they are is something that shouldn't be
there in the dragons blood in the first place. They are a parasite that
attacks humans, herd beast and other red blooded animals. Not
Dragons.."
Lenna felt more confused then she looked, but Abby knew she'd have to
explain it to her. "This didn't just "Happen". Someone was behind it."
"Those little swimmers in the blood are called Myspoolotas," she said
and
looked Lenna square in the eye. "And they damn sure didn't get inside
Triss's blood on their own. Myspool's do not attack and infest
Dragons."
Lenna must have looked as confused as she felt. "I've never heard of
those. Where do they come from and how could they have infested Triss
if
they don't attack dragons?"
The Dragonhealer from Telnor looked around the room to make sure no one
was within hearing distance. What she was about to tell Lenna, she
didn't
want to chance getting out of the room and making the gossip rounds
before
something could be done about it.
"How they got there I do not know.. *When* I can guess anyway. But
someone.. a human someone had to have injected them into Triss. Someone
who meant to do the dragon harm.
She held up her hand when Lenna would have asked a question. "As soon
as I
ran the sample and confirmed what I was seeing, I went back and took a
damn good look at Triss. She told me she didn't remember anyone being
near
enough to her to get that close, but she also admitted that she had
been
sleeping a good deal... She started complaining that she had a spot on
her
side under her wing that was itching badly and asked if I could rub it
while I was there... that's when I noticed a big red irritation and a
closer look confirmed that someone.. had injected her with a big
needle...
and I KNOW you didn't do it because you KNOW where to drawl blood for a
sample from. I took a second sample right near where the irritation
was..
and that's what I found. "
She had to stop finally to take a breath, but still made Lenna wait to
ask
any questions as she went on.. "The point is.. Sometime yesterday
morning.. someone sneaked into the dragons cave where Triss has be
sleeping and injected her with the little bugs...."
She placed her hands down on the table between them sharply as her blue
eyes turned almost black in anger that someone would harm a dragon in
this
sick way. " Myspoolotas' are deadly to both humans and bovines. Any
mammal
with red blood cells, which dragons do not have. They are a parasite
that
begins to eat the host away from the inside out. They are found in cold
weather zones in caves and near tree lines... They attach themselves to
warm bodies and burrow under the skin and into the blood stream. Once
there if not caught in time... they begin to eat away at their host
until
the host is dead... There is an antidote that when given early enough
can
stop the bugs growth... The problem usually is catching it. Triss is
lucky on two counts.. We did catch it and the dragons blood do not have
red cells.. slowed the growth of the bugs."
"But why did Triss's blood look so cloudy in the sample?" Lenna asked,
trying to take in all the healer was saying.
"I have a theory on that," Abby told her and reached around behind her
to
pick up the tube where the rest of Triss's blood sample was kept. What
Lenna saw didn't look at all like the sample she herself had drawn two
days ago, and she said as much.
"These bugs attack warm blooded *red* cells, as I told you," Abby took
a
long look at the sample herself. "They do not attack dragons, because
quite frankly dragon's hides are too think and tough for them to dig
into,
and there is nothing for them to eat once they are in there."
She held the tube up between them. "This is why I am saying that
someone
did this on purpose to harm Triss... Someone mix human or bovine blood
with the bugs before injecting it into Triss's blood stream giving the
bugs something to get their meal started... Now I don't know her rider
all
that well but somewhere down the line they must have done something to
someone to piss them off badly enough that that person would come back
and
try to kill the dragon to hurt the man... Someone has it in for your
friend and we need to warn him before they come up with something more
deadly the next time."
Abby suddenly felt a chill in the air. Lenna's face was deadly calm as
she
looked her friend in the eyes. "Are- you- damn- sure- about- this?" she
asked in a tone devoid of all emotion, but Abby could almost pity the
guilty party if Lenna found him before the others did. She was very
protective of those she loved.
"I'm very sure," Abby pointed at the scope. "The blood test doesn't
lie.
There is NO WAY Triss could have been infected on her own. The bugs are
cold weather bugs and Keldarra is warm this time of year the bugs would
have been dormant. They do not like warm or hot weather and hide in the
coolest spots they can find until winter. The *ONLY* way they could
have
found their way into Triss, was by someone's hand. Your friend Trevor
has
an enemy out there. An Enemy who is trying to kill his dragon and he
has
to be warned before they can strike again!!"
The look on Lenna's face suddenly turned to horror. "What about Triss.
Is
there anything we can do for her now to stop these... things..." she
was
worried about how Trevor would take it if anything happened to Triss.
However the calming smile that appeared on the healer's face, helped to
settle her fears. "We caught it in time.." she assured the rider. "Once
I
identified the problem, I was quick to administer the antidote. I'll
run
another blood test before I leave tomorrow, but hopeful she'll be
fine."
"And if she's not.."
"Then I'll stay until she is."
Lenna felt more relived, because she knew Abby 'would' stay if needed.
Her eyes went cloudy as she bespoke her dragon, asking her to inform
the
queen that her rider and her mate, Triss's rider come to the healer
hall
ASAP.
"I asked Blanchie to inform Cynthia and have her bring Trevor here."
She
announced in a very calm and deceptive tone. Only Abby, who had grown
up
with Lenna and knew her better then most people outside her family,
knew
the woman's mind was already plotting revenge for the person, or
persons
responsible for harming her friends dragon. "She's also getting some of
the other dragons to keep a closer watch on Triss until she's well
enough
to leave the cave. But you know.. it might be better if we move Triss
anyway to a cave..."
"NO!!" the healer said quickly. Panic flashed across her face as she
grabbed Lenna by the arm to make sure she knew how serious it was. "You
can NOT move Triss. Until I do the second blood test to make sure we
got
the bugs Triss has to stay right where she is! In fact the less she
moves
right now the better for her. Moving makes the blood pump harder and
move
faster. We need her to keep as still as possible to make sure the
little
swimmer DON'T"
Lenna got the message. She quickly sent one to Blanchie to send to the
other dragons.. Bohoc... to make sure they kept Triss still. <Tell her
that she is to STAY PUT until Healer Abby says otherwise. Got it?>
>>Got it<< Blanchie responded. >>She will stay but she is not happy about
it. She says she is feeling better already, thanks to the healer.<<
<That's very good,> relief flooded Lenna's mind through their link. <We
you able to get a hold of Cynthia?>
>>I did. She is coming with Triss's rider.<<
Lenna refocused on her friend. "Trevor and Cynthia should be here soon.
Blanchie said they are on their way. Maybe they can help figure out who
has it in for Trevor, because I can't think of anyone myself. Trevor's
one
of the nicest guys I know. He's like a brother to me as well as a good
friend."
"Known him long?" Abby quipped, trying to lighten the mood.
Lenna nodded. "Several years. In fact every since he came to the Cleft.
His mother is Turner's mate and mother of his son Mykel"."
Abby knew the look on her friends face and could 'almost' pity the
person
responsible for trying to kill her friends dragon. Almost. Lenna in
protective mode was NOT a pleasant person to have to deal with. Not
unless
you were Dan'yar or Farr'in who were about the only ones who could back
Lenna down, besides the Warrenlady, Cynthia, herself.
"You've known Trevor for 'several years' and Trevor's still alive to
talk
about it?" the healer's lips twitch in amusement. She well knew her
friends reputation for getting back at her brothers when they tried to
pull something on her.
Lenna gave a short laugh, understanding what Abby was getting at.
"Let's just say Trevor..."gets me", she purred, and smiled for the
first
time since Abby gave her the news about Triss.
