Subject: [DL-J] Is the winner really the one who wins?

Hugs Kris! Take a look at what I wrote for the mating flight. Since
Barb wrote Fig and Jerram arriving at Haven, I decided to put a
different spin on things - let Seyd win, and give Kay a chance to
defend
Tara from Jerram...and also to make Fig assume that her future mate
Jerram may also be her father!! :)

Add or change things as you want - I think it could be posted pretty
much as-is, unless you want to carry this one forward to have Kay
stopping Jerram from getting near Tara until he's out of mating-flight
mode. If so, just take out the tag to you and leave the one for Barb.

Anyway, let me know what you think of this one. :)

John

Jerram
Haven - Midday, day 2

Sabbith flushed as the Queen took to the air. <I am worthy, Varaenna! I

am!> There was nothing he liked better then a female in heat! He jumped

awkwardly into the air and soared after her. Once off the ground he
sped
after her with an agility and grace that hardly seemed possible based
on
his size and the clumsiness he'd displayed getting off the ground in
the
first place. <My Kay! I am worthy!>

On the ground Kalewyn also felt his dragons flush and turned his eyes
on
Tara who still seemed far to weak. However, already her body was
beginning to writhe on the cot, much to the Kataani healers surprise.

<Sabbith, tell her to stop!> Kay called.

<Stop??> Sabbith's surprised response came, <Why would I want to?? And
when does Varaenna ever listen to me anyway?? Besides, my Kay, I am
worthy! oooh ... ohh.. I gotcha! ... ooooh oops.. Kay stop it. You're
distracting me!>

Kay groaned. There was no stopping Veraenna and he knew it. He glance
desperately around the room. How could Varaenna be so irresponsible!
Tara wasn't up to this!

The mating flush filled him with desperation as he began pushing
sailors out of the room. *Out!* he signed with big over exaggerated
movements. These were the sailors who moments ago had been so helpful
in
finding a place to set Tara comfortably down that were now being
manhandled by the dragonrider. Some protested with glares, looking as
though they might strike Kay back.

/snip from Barb's post/
She could see Jerram fighting to control the desire coursing through
his
body and knew he would soon lose the battle. A dragons lust was just to
damn strong for a rider to fight.

"Go!!=A8 She waved him on knowing he wasn't going to be of any help to
her until the flight was over and a winner decided. He was fighting it,
wanting to do what he came here to do, but the pull from Seydor was to
strong. She could see the pleading in his eyes for her to understand.
"Just go. You're not going to be of any help to me right now... I'll
keep them safe!!=A8
/end snip/

Jerram nodded absently, not really seeing or hearing Fig anymore. He
was caught up completely in his dragon's lust - and he knew
instinctively where he needed to go to sate it. He hurried over toward
the building that stood nearby, and disappeared in through the front
door.

Varaenna

<Hah! You are not worthy!> she taunted the red dragon who pursued her.

He was more agile in the air than he was on the ground, a part of her
mind noted, but still not fast or agile enough to keep up with HER.

<I was worthy last time!!> Sabbith returned, panting with the effort of

keeping up with the larger queen. <I'll be worthy this time too!>

It seemed, for the moment, that Sabbith would be right, if for no other

reason than the fact that they were the only two dragons in this small
pocket. In addition, Varaenna couldn't really build up speed because
it
seemed that every time she did, she found herself confronted by the
shimmering, silvery borderline that led to the wastes beyond. Even in
the heights of mating lust, she retained enough sense not to enter the
wastes and jeopardize her bond with the rider. Sabbith was equally
cautious, so the two of them found themselves basically flying in a
circle within the pocket, spiraling ever higher and higher.

Suddenly the queen sensed a presence to her right, and swerved to the
left just as a second draconic form dove in at her - and to her
surprise, the newcomer had appeared right out of the misty veil of the
wastes! It took her lust-fogged mind a second or two in order to
realize that this wasn't a joined warren dragon, but one of their wild
cousins. Wild dragons, having no dragon-rider bond to risk, could come

and go as they pleased through the wastes, provided they stayed out of
areas where there was too little magic to sustain them. The wild male
who darted just beneath her was small by warren standards...no more
than
two-thirds Sabbith's size and half her own - but he looked to be in
good
condition, and his small size probably made him an agile flyer. But it
didn't matter, he was no more worthy than Sabbith!

His attempt to intercept her by surprise having failed, the wild dragon

had to make a sharp turn to get into chase position behind her, which
caused him to lose valuable distance. By the time he had completed his

turn, he was well behind the two warren dragons, and in a straight
chase
the smaller dragon would be at a big disadvantage compared to Sabbith.

But then she noticed yet another dragon - Seydor? What was he doing
here? From the corner of her eye, she saw the blue dragon come in from

her other side, and only a quick twist kept him from getting hold of
her
tail. As it was, both of them skidded a bit into the mists, and had to

bank sharply to get back into the Haven pocket.

* * * * *
Seydor

He had known Varaenna all her life. He had been present with Jerram at

Ismene, on the day when Darath's clutch had hatched and the beautiful
little white silver queen had first emerged from her shell. The two
had
always been friends, in part because their riders were. Jerram had
secretly taught Tara how to use swords and knives to defend herself,
and
had done so at some risk to himself because there'd have been
consequences if Dragonlady Vignette had found out. Seyd and Varaenna
had together made sure to keep the secret from Darath, something that
was not easy for dragons to do. Eventually the Empress had gotten wind

of it, of course, and both he and Varaenna had gotten a scathing
lecture
from the Empress - at the same time that their riders were getting one
from Vignette. But the storm had passed, and he knew Varaenna had
always been grateful for the way he'd looked out for the young queen.

He'd been very happy to accompany her to Jasra, even though his rider
had been less than thrilled to leave Ismene for the distant warren that

sat on its isolated perch, sandwiched between the tropical forest and
the sea. But to him, it meant that he'd continue to have a chance to
participate in her mating flights. He'd had a good chance, he thought,

at her last one, when suddenly the big red dragon had teleported in
from
another warren, literally in front of the queen. So, of course he'd
caught her. Seyd had been a little disappointed that she'd taken such
an immediate liking to Sabbith, and had gotten closer to him than she'd

ever done with Seyd. He knew that this was at least in part connected
to the fact that their riders had shared a similar bond, and didn't
begrudge Sabbith his place at her side.

But now...for this one time, at least...he meant to win this flight!
Tomorrow she'd be back with Sabbith, he knew, but today....today she
was
going to be his!!

Jerram

He pushed his way past the people milling around the ground floor of
the
small inn, and dashed up the stairs. He knew somehow which door would
lead him to her. It wasn't locked, but if it had been, that wouldn't
have stopped him. When he entered, he saw a startling sight. Tara lay
on the bed, covered with a white sheet, only her head and shoulders
visible - but he could see how she writhed under the sheet, in tune
with
her queen's mating lust. Standing next to the door, with an alarmed
look on his face, stood a Kataani...an army healer, if Jerram was
reading his uniform insignia correctly. He was saying something in the

Kataani language, of which Jerram knew only a relatively few words, but

it seemed that he wanted Tara to stop what she was doing.

He looked up and saw Kalewyn literally pressed against the wall, arms
outstretched as though to brace himself. His eyes were closed, and he
shook his head repeatedly as if he was undergoing some terrible
internal
struggle. It seemed like he was trying to keep away from Tara, which
Jerram couldn't understand because of the mating flight. He was dimly
aware, at the back of his mind, of Tara's condition, and under any
other
circumstances he would have realized that this explained the behavior
of
both Kay and the Kataani healer. But all Jerram could think of was
completing the flight.

Kay opened his eyes and became aware of Jerram. Their eyes met, and
Kay
- with a visible effort - shook his head and held up his hand in a sign

that Jerram knew meant "no."

Varaenna

The queen kept ahead of her three suitors, who trailed behind her in
order of size - Sabbith the closest, then Seydor, then the wilder male
-
which somehow struck the queen as funny, thinking they looked like a
group of baby ducks following their mother. Her distraction almost got

her caught as yet another dragon suddenly appeared out of the mists -
another wilder, drawn from his haunts in the wastes by the mating
passion the queen was radiating. The newcomer, a deep blue male, tried

to come at her broadside, hoping to get his claws around her before she

could evade - but she saw him just in time, and dropped several yards
so
that he passed right over her.

However, this put him right in Sabbith's path, forcing the red male to
swerve with an angry bellow to avoid a collision. Varaenna couldn't
help but laugh as she watched the two of them, letting herself slow
down
for just a moment.

That single moment was enough, as Seydor virtually landed on her back,
right between her wings, his claws grasping her hungrily. <You are
mine!> he crowed.

The shocked queen, who had - despite her protestations - expected her
Sabbith to catch her, was shocked at this turn of events. She bucked
and writhed, but could not shake Seydor off. <No I am *not* yours, you
unworthy...!>

<I AM worthy!> he cried with a vehemence that surprised even her. She
realized that she wasn't going to be able to shake him, so it was a
choice of submitting or having them both crash to the ground.

<You are worthy,> she admitted.

* * * * *
Jerram

He felt the exultation flow through him - Seydor had won! The blue
dragon was now claiming his prize, and Jerram had no thought but to do
likewise. Something at the back of his mind told him that this was
wrong...he heard Balagon talking about Tara's condition, remembered
seeing her lying on a bed in the med center, seemingly at death's very
door. He then saw a face in his mind, and it was Gus...his Gus, who'd
given her life to save the warren...had it only been yesterday? He
suddenly felt like he was betraying her by being here. But she was
gone...gone... his guts clenched around that still-open wound, and he
suddenly wanted something - anything to ease that pain. And he looked
at Tara, who he knew felt the same dragon-induced passion that he did.

Then Gus' image was gone, replaced by another...and he was surprised to

see that it was the face of Fig, Darden's niece. Why should that be,
he
wondered, why would he be seeing her?

It didn't matter...he needed whatever release from his pain he could
get, and this was a mating flight - Tara was his!

And then another face was there, blocking him - but this was no mental
image, it was a real face, Kalewyn's. Kay brought up his hand again,
and again made that same urgent sign. *No!*

Kalewyn
***

His own dragonlust was beginning to fade, followed by intense
disappointment. He'd managed to get eveyone out of the inn .. and
amazingly had not been slugged by any of the disgruntled sailors.
Though
a couple it seemed had wanted to. Griffin, from the Marquesa had seen
events unfold and had enough knowledge of the Warren to see what was
going on and to step in and help out.

But now Jerram was there and the dragonlust had not faded from him. It
had in fact grown and he was intent on letting it mature. Kay was just
as intent to prevent this from happening. No one was getting near Tara
..=2E not now .. not till this was over and she was safe. Perhaps there
was
jealousy as well, but he buried that thought behind his concern for her

condition.

*Back off!* he signed briskly and held up his fists. He was definitely
going to fight for her.

Tag Barb - what does Fig think is happening inside the inn?

MD 2:1920

Montana was in her office when the message about their surprise guests
came through. Coming out of the chair as if she'd been shot the tall
redhead grumbled under her breath as she headed for the bridge. "Oh
crap, what now!"

{Tag: Josh - I'll leave the intros on this to you *grin*}

MD 2:1800

Montana stared at the woman with a solemn expression. The Doctor had
been put in a secluded area away from the main medical area, which did
afford her some privacy, but not as much as the XO would have liked.
This confrontation had been coming for awhile now and the more private
it was the better. Glancing around she noted some of the afternoon
staff lurking not too far away but the tall redhead's icy expression
was enough to send them scurrying off to other parts of sickbay.

"I do hope you are feeling better Doctor Hywell?"

Miaren nodded silently, her eyes growing wary at Montana's tone.

"You know, I've had my doubts about you from the very beginning.
Something's just not right. You may be a Doctor, but you have no
shipboard experience what so ever, and I find myself questioning why
Starfleet would send a lab rat to a Flag Ship? The flimsy excuse of
treating my sister doesn't wash. McKenna was sent to Vulcan long before
and HHQ knew that. Sending an inexperienced officer to a ship this size
isn't normal protocol. Strangely enough since your arrival we now have
a missing crewman, several dead, and a possible conspiracy, none of
which sit well with me. I find it rather interesting that Marquis and
his little sidekick have taken quite a special interest in you, and
Lieutenant Talara. It's also rather convenient how you have cozied up
to our Science Officer whom appears to be up to her neck in this
incident somehow. A bit too much of a coincidence for my tastes."

The Doctors eyes grew wider by the second.

A lot of people had died and she was in no mood for games and the
coldness in Montana's voice never wavered as she continued, "Due to
your queries, your Father is poking his nose in places he shouldn't.
He's treading on very dangerous ground Doctor and really needs to watch
his step. And gee," the redhead said her voice tinged with sarcasm,
"you are now found prancing around in your altogethers screaming like a
wild banshee setting off a ship wide alert. So tell me Doctor, why are
you here, who the hell sent you, and most importantly where do your
loyalties lie? "

{Tag: Carys - Ummm, I just couldn't help myself *giggle}
